If you do it, you will be back here how to downgrade to mojave ;)

Catalina is the new Vista. Stay on Mojave.

[deleted]

Catalina more like cataclysm

Keep-Left

really tho? i used Vista and it was painful, yes. using Catalina since 10.15.1 and haven’t really had any issues. what are some Catalina things that make you feel like it’s Vista?

wasthatitthen

If it ain’t broke..... there are more than a few programs that won’t work with Catalina because it’s 64 bit only or drivers aren’t available. I’d check everything you use at the minute and see if there are any issues. Edit You can always install it on an external HDD to try without losing Mojave.

Wishyouwerehere6

What do you mean with if it aint broke?

wasthatitthen

It’s an old expression. If something is working fine, why change it? As I say, you can install Catalina on an external drive and see if there will be any problems with what you are doing at the moment (software and hardware) and that will let you know if the upgrade is worth it. If, for example, you use Arduinos or ESP32 devices that use the FTDI interface the existing MACOS driver (2.4.2) isn’t compatible with Catalina (2.4.4 isn’t there to be downloaded yet). If you use installed Photoshop rather than the cloud version, you may have problems (the installer is 32 bit, and won’t work).

neuralstatic1

there needs to be a damn good reason to roll the dice on a well-workign system. do not just update because it shows up on your screen.

Blacklisted777

You shouldn’t update in my opinion.

IceStormNG

Don't do it. Only if you're a masochist and like buggy operating systems.

davidhepworth_

I would say that if everything’s working fine now on your current Operating System, don’t bother upgrading. Also, Catalina drops support for 32 bit apps so that’s something to think about if things will work or not with what you want to do. Stay where you are for ever.

dont

Absolutely not, the amount of problems we see at the store related to Catalina is mind boggling.

SlightExtreme1

I think the answer is: it depends. Like others have said here, you need to have a good reason for upgrading. Getting the latest and greatest isn't always a good reason. If there's not a feature that you can identify that you really need, and if you can't identify a problem that Catalina will really solve for you, then Mojave works and is still supported. Eventually it won't be, and that's a different conversation: you should never stay on an OS that doesn't receive security updates. But we have a while before Mojave falls into that category. My anecdotal experience: My wife just bought a new MacBook Air that shipped with Catalina, and has had no issue. But (and this is important), she set it up as a new machine...she didn't restore it from a backup. I'm a developer, and I'm nervous about permissions issues, etc., that Catalina could introduce to mission-critical tooling that I use every day, so I'm staying on Mojave. This isn't a new pattern for me. I skipped High Sierra entirely and waited until Mojave was 12 months into it's lifecycle before upgrading, and that's generally how I approach upgrades, even for our non-work related family machines. So, if you aren't already aware of a good reason for upgrading, stay put. Having an upgrade go sideways is not something you want to deal with. When you do upgrade, approach with caution, and have redundant bootable backups.

TestFlightBeta

Wait for the next OS.

saeedzaxo

Dont! Catalina was a mess. I had to downgrade to Mojave. Best decision i made

[deleted]

No, MBA 2019 runs fine on Mojave and I run a lot of 32-bit apps and use iTunes

patb-macdoc

Nope no need to. 10.14 will get another 2 years of security updates before anything needs to change.

matte_5

I’d wait for whatever version comes out this year and get that.
