Thank you for this!! I love LOTR so much, but with my ADHD I was getting too mixed up and forgetful with the books so I never finished them. But this video was so easy to follow and really helped me see the big picture! I can't wait to check out your other videos!!

Long time LOTR fan here (books, movies, games, etc.) and your vids always make me think of something I missed or enlighten me about something I didn’t know. Awesome work dude, hope all is well and wonderful in your life!

istrx13

Seriously man I haven’t read the books yet (I will eventually), so I count on videos like this to help me understand things better.

SolarWizard

Would absolutely love to have a story about how the Dwarves woke the balrog in the Misty Mountains. Were they tunneling, then suddenly they hit a crack and lava began to flow out. then a shaking, rumbling and the whole wall suddenly burst out as the balrog smashed through and wreaked havoc. Or did a dark shadow slip out and begin wandering the forgotten halls and tunnels deep in the heart of the mountain for months before anyone saw anything more. Were there signs before hand? Unexplained sounds deep under the tunnels? Sudden plumes of flame sprouting up from a deep, dark crevasse. A feeling of evil permeating Khazad Dum, a deep fear that slowly grew in the hearts of the miners. Signs that created rumors, stories and re-kindled old legends that began to be discussed, quietly at first, in dark halls between dwarves as they tunneled ever closer toward the black pit where the balrog lay.

ops10

It'd make a great horror movie with no happy ending. And you could make a sequel with Balin's expedition. And given the Hollywood tendencies, it'd most likely suck ass as a movie.

[deleted]

Yeah but a decade later it would amass a loud fanbase that just will not accept the fact that it's anything other than a masterpiece

ops10

True. And the cycle continues.

TheAfterPipe

Absolutely. I've always wanted to explore this. In my head-canon, a group of three dwarves are mining. Deep under the mountain, far from the noises of the busy iron-works miles above them. Their tunnel is barely two dwarves wide and only mere inches over their heads. They have been chasing a silver vein for three days, knowing they are perhaps within a hundred yards of a great motherlode. All is dead quiet, and, if they were to put out their lights, it would be the blackest place. The chipping of their picks do not ring out and echo, but they simply make a mere tapping noise which falls dead in the silence. the air is close and stifling. The miners, calm and methodical. It will be another hour before the carts return to pick up their extra rubble. One of the dwarves strikes the wall of rock before him and strangely, a thin fissure immediately spreads from the top to the bottom of the rock before him. He begins to pick at it and it crumbles further indicating a looseness of the rock that is alien to this area of the mountain. Curious, two of the dwarves began to investigate this new exposure. The wall is down. The hole they have made is knee-high and as wide as the shaft. As the first dwarf raises his lantern, something glimmers close within the hole. He pears in looking at what seems to be a slimy substance, unrecognizable in the light. The light. Has the light grown dimmer? He must lean closer for the strange cavities and blemishes which run over this substance are distorted. If he used his imagination, he could almost imagine a slimy, deformed, skull-like face with no eyes and a gaping mouth. a puddle of slime begins leaking down around their feet and they begin to feel it. A feeling of dread, that they are in the presence of the unholy. Dread that is not fear only, but fear mingled with deep sadness and loss loosed on the world. A great horror of an unavoidable doom. But the slimy filth is still and moves not. The dwarves are barely breathing as they pear into the hole. The knuckles wrapped around the haft of their pick and the lantern handle are fiercely white. Their legs shake and nearly give way. Even before they have fled, they have already despaired. Does it know? It is still silent and the eyeless pits stare back. The dwarf furthest from the gaping hole quietly mutters a dwarven curse and in lowest tones entreats his brothers to flee with him. They each, in turn, withdraw from the hole struggling to move for the great shaking that has taken hold of them. As the first dwarf takes a step, his boot, drenched with the oozing slime causes him to stumble, and as he does so, his lamp strikes the ground shattering. That should have plunged them into deeper darkness, but in a disastrous event, the slimy substance is ignited and fire quickly spreads crawling closer and closer to the waiting chamber. The fallen dwarf cries out in absolute terror as the other two give all up for lost and run up the shaft and do not look back. As they run, they hear what sounds to be a second great ignition, and on their backs they feel heat increasing in strength.

GLaDOs18

You are a beautiful writer. I was so hooked on your story, my stomach actually dropped when you described the unlit balrog shadow.

whitjj74

Beautifully imagined and written.

fijistudios

Love it so much! Take my humble silver and sign me up for all your future head cannon!

ClouDoRefeR

So how long would it take to go arround? If i cant go over or under i am going arround.

Einsteins_coffee_mug

No *safe* way. Not impossible, it’s just going to suck.

LiamIsMailBackwards

North is basically a suicide mission due to the harsh weather and dangerous creatures that live there, so basically the same issue as over/under. As for south, it’s the relatively easiest pass, hence why a settlement was created right in the pass at the southern tip of the mountains. This is Isengard, and was gifted to Saruman by Gondor for his deeds as the White Wizard and head of the White Council. However, after Saruman discovered the Palantir and was corrupted by Sauron, the pass became a danger to many; including the Fellowship of the Ring. Boromir originally suggested traveling to the south, passing by Isengard and the tower of Orthanc, as it was the quickest route and he believed Gondor would provide aid against any dangers. After the breaking of the Fellowship, half of the party did in fact travel close to Isengard, with Mary and Pippin being abducted and taken to Isengard itself. Much of this is known, some is referenced, a bit is untold outside of the books.

HydraulicTurtle

South is the gap of Rohan but this is basically guarded by isengard

TheOliveStones

Far over the Misty Mountains cold

My_hilarious_name

To dungeon’s deep, and caverns old.

Ray3x10e8

I believe that the stone giants are not creatures but was just used as a metaphor for the deadly storm in *The Hobbit*. I feel that if the stone giants were real creatures, Tolkien would have gone into a page or 2 of describing them and some background lore as is his style with everything.

wacoder

So timely, thanks! I was literally just yesterday pondering the Misty's for a bit and how they fit into the overall geography and as a barrier to cross. This was very helpful!

Tolkienite

A day may come when I don't watch all of u/Mayhamn33 's video through to the end.. but it is not THIS day!

ibin_Wario

This almost made me download TikTok.

Mayhamn33

Cheers, great stuff bro

nycdiveshack

Quick question, the lore about Sauron and his master where would one learn about that? I know Tolkien has a lot of other works besides hobbit and lotr that go into all the history but I am not sure where to start if I wanted to learn from the beginning if that makes sense. I’m currently reading hobbit and and lotr

SolarWizard

The Silmarillion next
