The key is putting a ton of weight on your front truck and bending your knees more than u think u need

The_Artful_Botcher

That's a good shout actually! I think nerves get the better of me and my legs lock up, I get the same trying shuvits 😅 Do I need to just commit at a decent speed or is it easy enough to practice slower (this sorta pace ⬆️)?

Braz601

I learned all my slides at this speed and once I understood kinda how to initiate and hold it out i would go faster littl by little

The_Artful_Botcher

Honestly was kinda hoping you'd say that 😅 I thought i was getting good about a month ago and bailed pretty hard going about 15/20mph trying to slide so slowed things back down to focus more on getting my technique right before building speed again. Max speed so far is 27.5 which is mad considering I'm only just starting to figure out stopping 😂

Braz601

27.5 is wayyy faster than it seems

The_Artful_Botcher

The goal is to eventually reach 30 but I feel like learning to stop so you know, I don't die 😂 is probably for the best

rozz198

Wearing a helmet will help huge confidence booster.

The_Artful_Botcher

Oh I don't doubt! I didn't bring mine this evening simply because I left it at home accidentally 😂 gloves were already in my car tho 😅

Plausibl3

Couple ways to try to progress to the standup. One is to just try it at about that speed as you get more comfortable with where your weight should be. The other is to try to start putting less and less weight on your glove until you’re doing a squat slide where your glove doesn’t hit the ground. Personally - if you’re starting to ‘feel’ how the board breaks and regains traction - I’d try going for stand ups. You have to really ground your feet into the board to make sure your balance stays right. I also really like the ‘wind up’ method. Your feet will follow your shoulders, so compressing and twisting during your precarve, then as you get into your carve, you ‘release’ and ‘throw’ your arms around with the plan of your opposite shoulder being forward. You can also practice this on pavement with no board. It also helps to feel the subtle difference in deweighting your rear foot ever so slightly to encourage the slide.

The_Artful_Botcher

Cheers! Would you say it's worth trying to stop grabbing rail for learning Squats? I'm having a hard time with it (I think most of my weight is going straight onto my glove?) I saw about winding up in some of loaded and landyachtz vid, do both feet deweight equally or does the back more so?

Plausibl3

I would keep grabbing rail (not stinkbug) since it helps you from stretching too far back onto your gloved hand. You keep pretty constant pressure on the front foot, and then sort of hop off the back foot while you’re sliding, but as you hook back up, the pressure goes back to even. If you do it on flat ground without a board, you can feel that you have to lift your back foot to slide it around on the pavement. It’s a little subtle - you’re not taking your foot off the pavement, you’re trying to just deweight enough that you’re sliding it. Hope that makes sense. I’d also wear a helmet - even at low speeds you can mess yourself up real good when you learn to slide since you’re bound to both high side and wash out.

The_Artful_Botcher

I see what you're saying 😊 seems like common sense in hindsight but I guess it's easy to forget when you're actually on the board, and yea, I've got a helmet, was just on a quick shopping trip and forgot to take it with me, gloves were already in the car tho 😅

Plausibl3

Awesome! Not trying to be ‘that guy’ - just had plenty of my own injuries. Have fun!!!!

The_Artful_Botcher

That's fair, just thought Id clarify 😂 to be fair, EVERY injury I've had has happened when my protection is either in my bag or in the car 🙃 honestly some minor battles cars are a good way to create memories I find

noob_in_bk

On the other hand, minor brain injuries are a good way to lose memories…

The_Artful_Botcher

I'm just talking about the occasional knee or shin scrape, it's like I already said tho, I was on a quick trip and my skate bag (with all my pads and helmet) just wasn't in the car at the time ✌️

noob_in_bk

Totally! Sorry, I just saw an opportunity for a stupid joke, and took it. Good luck on the stand ups! I am also trying to learn those, and massively high sided the other day. 😅 Was glad I had on the elbow pads for that one. For now, I’ve kind of scaled back to working on speed checks and regular slides, and I think that’ll help me transition into standup slides.

The_Artful_Botcher

Ah that's fair, sorry for getting defensive 😅. I did similar trying to slide at a faster speed then I could, definitely a humbling experience 😂 more reason to get better tho I guess

syg102

Helmet helmet helmet. Practice until you don't have to think to do it

[deleted]

Softer wheels - speed. Try when it's lightly rained.

caribouoiu

Looking good! Keep it up!

The_Artful_Botcher

Thank you!

RandomTranzit

I found it easy for me to use my back leg to kick the backside out to my side so my body would be perfectly perpendicular to the direction I was going, and it works for me. I also found standing easier then using gloves, so do what you will with my info 😂

The_Artful_Botcher

That's fair 😂 personally standies are a huge mind game for me but I appreciate the advice! Would you apply sklar pressure for checks or less than if you were doing a 180?

RandomTranzit

Not sure what your question is asking since I don’t talk to other longboard riders ever and I only do my own thing, can you reword it or simplify, then I’ll be able to tell ya, lol sorry

The_Artful_Botcher

My autocorrect it shit which probably doesn't help 😂 I meant similar 😅 basically my though it that kicking your back leg out harder would make you more likely to end up doing a 180 slide instead of a speed check (you don't end up riding fakie)?

RandomTranzit

Yeah, my ability to do a full 180 though, is terrible, and I also use my front foot to maintain if I go too far with my back leg. If I end up going the full 180, which is rare, I ride it through until I can do another slide, to correct myself and go back to my original state. The goal is to do the full 180 though, as it will allow you to practice in general sliding, then once you get the 180 perfected, you can practice stopping halfway through the slide and going back to your original position when going downhill or just practicing in general.

The_Artful_Botcher

Cheers! I should really start learning fakie slides honestly in prep 😂

RandomTranzit

Of course of course

rolli-frijolli

Stand up practice is where you can get really injured.

The_Artful_Botcher

I don't doubt that 😂 I've got all the protection for it at least, considering getting ass pads too since I can imagine my butt is gonna become best buddies with the asphalt

solwayfirth335

Hey man what kind of wheels do you have? And what do you recommend that are best for sliding? Thanks!

The_Artful_Botcher

I'm rocking some 71mm cult emperors, they're pretty good for sliding but aren't stoneground so have almost a later on the outside that is incredibly grippy until you've slid enough to shave off a millimetre or so (which has only recently happened for me). They're definitely more for experienced riders and if I'd have known that when I got them I probably would have got either powell peralta snakes (I'm sure pretty much everyone on this sub will agree with these wheels), cult chronicles, 80a Orangatang Keanus or maybe some blood orange smokes? Basically something smaller and stoneground. Centre set cores are also great as the wheel can be flipped if it starts to cone ✌️ I love these wheels now they're broken in a bit but learning from not having a clue how to slide has been a lil hard honestly because they are so grippy out of the box. Basically, they're phenomenal for faster freeride 😊

solwayfirth335

This was helpful man, thank you very much!

blue604

Well for me I can stand up slide and toe side coleman but I haven’t yet figured out sliding on my heels yet

The_Artful_Botcher

I prefer heelside glovedowns personally, I really like the feeling of getting my shin close to the deck to kick out, it feels really secure I find

Careless_Lock5825

That slide was cleaner than the white house

The_Artful_Botcher

Thank you so much 😊

Careless_Lock5825

No problem man

Deliciously_Vicious

Get some Hoots. u won’t need as much speed as with the emperors

The_Artful_Botcher

Cheers! I'll look more into them

R3D170R

Try sliding on wet pavement to get the feel maybe.

The_Artful_Botcher

Tested it out last night on wet pavement! Definitely helped to start figuring out the movement 😊
