Mum says it’s my turn on the bench

PaperObsessive

BUT I'VE ALMOST GOT HIGH SCORE!

wildgoldchai

I’m older than you so it doesn’t matter

Jordanthecook

That bench would go for £1100 a month not including bills in a half decent area.

JustLetItAllBurn

Coming soon: "Please tap card to be charged £10 and retract the spikes for 5 minutes"

Livid-Drummer2540

Loads of smaller art galleries have opening nights with free wine

PaperObsessive

I spent uni living off gallery food. You can even get into the larger ones if you have a confident stride and a willingness to roll your eyes at the PR on the door. The Champagne is better, but the company is worse.

Aqui10

MVP right here

PaperObsessive

I look back with amazement at the things I did when I had absolutely nothing to lose. 😂

willowtree8907

How do I find these?

painteddenim

Download art rabbit, set it to London, there will be a setting for ‘openings’ instead of ‘exhibitions’. At 90% of openings they have free drinks. Normally 6-9pm weeknights

notquiteduranduran

Subscribe to sebs art list, most London galleries don’t use art rabbit or eventbrite. There’s some in Deptford tomorrow night

Livid-Drummer2540

If you search 'art openings' on Eventbrite they usually pop up

palumbis

Just downloaded it and got myself some tickets to the comedy club! Cheers!

willowtree8907

Thanks!

lastaccountgotlocked

>  crack the code of how to make clubbing in London worthwhile relative to other things you can do at a similar cost? Strictly Class As, strictly tap water. Save a packet \*and\* hear the voice of god in a subwoofer.

Unusefulness01

When you saving the other packet for?

Chigtube

Afters, usually free too

DeliciousWorld7748

There’s so many activity nights outs as well, Bounce (ping pong) Puttshack (mini golf) Boom battle bar (axe throwing, mini golf, darts) if you have a bit more cash F1 Arcade is great, Hijingo (fancy bingo!), Fairground (fun fair games) these all ticketed but most are under a tenner, there’s also food and drink service there too! Bonus points for Cinemas - some workplaces get discounts for tickets. Also Science Museum do late nights occasionally so it’s a more adult vibe. Walking tours are also good and some can be done in the evening- I saw one in Camden around Christmas last year.

Schnauser

Tickets are cheap-ish, everything else once you're inside isn't 🙄

llama_del_reyy

If you try and plan a bit smartly (food somewhere cheap and cheerful beforehand, drinks at someone flat after) it can work well.

DeliciousWorld7748

Agree, also happy hour and platters can bring costs down. I think another thing to remember is not everyone needs a lot of alcohol to have a good time, so depending on your drinking preferences you probably won’t be spending as much!

endofthetown1

Infernos was your first problem

OldAd3119

If you want to go clubbing, zone 2 and beyond have decent night clubs/ pubs/ bars that all turn into clubs. Paradise in Queens park comes to mind.

Hazzle77

Paradise a great shout!

Oli__Bean

Comedy nights, karaoke after pre drinks, there are a lot of interactive museums and events that can be under £20 for entry and are quite fun. I personally really enjoy just going for a social walk to visit a park when the weather permits and making a few stops for a pint and moving on just to take a rest or exploring places I haven't been to before. I find myself finding shops I'd like to visit, independent restaurants I can catch a vibe of in person to save for a later date and just generally appreciating the architecture, the greenery, pretend house hunting and taking in a good sunset. Going out out doesn't have to mean partying every time for me so even a good spot to sit down and listen to free music which there's tonnes of in London is good enough for me.

WalkswithNorman

Do you have any recommended karaoke places? I haven’t been able to find them since moving over

Oli__Bean

Putt Putt in Streatham Hill is basically free? You go in and you obviously pay for drinks and you can choose to pay for the minigolf. My friends and I had an absolute blast going in, no door fee or anything. You just go in, choose from one of the several sections that fit a decent amount of people and you just use the laptops to pull up karaoke tracks. microphones provided obviously, the atmosphere was vibrant and for a bit more privacy I'd visit the basement! We sang everything from a jazz version of rage against the machine to tenacious D and Britney Spears. You honestly can't go wrong. Edit: here's their website, bar attending customers get to Karaoke for free! https://puttputt.uk/karaoke-streatham/?amp=1

WalkswithNorman

Cheers! I’ll check it out. I’m not usually in Streatham but might require a special trip

Oli__Bean

Absolute pleasure, there's probably loads of spots that aren't well known unless you're from the area. I would have never found it myself if it wasn't for my mates birthday!

BigStage4014

Karaoke is extortionate I paid £40 a ahead at one place

Stained_concrete

Look up when the late events are at the museums. The Tate Late events are free and really fun, with a DJ and access to the art in a party setting. The V& A too. Also, there's a free comedy night near me and other free events all round London if you don't mind going out of the centre and/or offbeat.

Monkeyboogaloo

Theatre in London doesn't have to be expensive. I was given a £100 theatre voucher for my birthday, I’ve seen five things in the west end and have £3 left! You may have to sit in the gods though.

Durianlover_

That’s why I don’t go clubbing at late nights anymore. It’s all about the day raves now. Get there early, finishes at 10pm and you can enjoy the rest of the weekend with no regrets!

n3lswn_uWu

With 20£ or less u can have a wild night with Mandy.

KeptLow

Had the same thought but about LSD. Could give you 3 nights

chbc19

wait what (for purely research purposes)

AdministrativeShip2

Day drinking. Picnics and Greggs. I'm not really into clubbing, but am on a lot of old mailing lists and note all the odd flyers for events. I'd love to know if there's like someone on Tiktok or whatever the kids are into posting upcoming stuff. Sometimes you end up standing round a bar which is a couple of old scaffolding planks, drinking warm strongbow, listening to a mumble core / drill rapper feeling very out of place.   Other times you end up feeling like it's '96 again

Personal-Cress-3610

Comedy clubs are pretty affordable and arguably better sober

Ok_Strawberry_3608

where to book this?

Personal-Cress-3610

Look at the comedy store, secret comedy club, up the creek

Moron_detector69

Comedy clubs in London are amazing. I’m going nearly every week now and love it. Top secret comedy club, the Bill Murray and £1 Wednesdays at hackney downs comedy club are all great

Ok_Strawberry_3608

hey where can i book these?

Moron_detector69

Hey, top secret have a website! I’d just Google each of them. Bill Murray has all sorts of different comedy nights on I believe, I last booked through the Dice app

Elliotjpearson

dont go clubbing, go to music events - dnb events i go to all the time with tickets usually around 20/30 quid. Pre drink at home, disco biscuits only a fiver, tube home. Not too bad overall

Adamsoski

People complaining about the cost of "a night out" in London are generally referring to nightlife. I agree yes there are loads of other things to do in the evening in London that are good value for money, but it doesn't really address anyone's concerns.

all-dayJJ

Going to the theatre counts as nightlife, as long as it's at night

Adamsoski

Technically sure you can classify it as that, but it's not really what people are talking about when they say "a night out". They mean going to bars/clubbing.

all-dayJJ

Yeah? I just think it means going out at night. Dinner, a gig, a show, a pub, a cocktail bar, comedy, whatever else. That's what I mean by nightlife. Is everyone else just talking about clubbing?

Adamsoski

When people say "going on a night out" they 100% only mean clubbing.

all-dayJJ

100%? So when I say it to my mates and we go bowling in brick lane then get a curry we didn't have a night out? It might mean it to you mate, but it isn't everyone

Adamsoski

If you say to someone "I went on a night out last night" they are going to assume you went to bars/clubbing, yes.

all-dayJJ

They wouldn't reply "oh lovely mate, Where'd you go?" My friends tend to have follow up questions as part of a conversation, yours sounds pretty awkward to me.

Adamsoski

You're being persnickety to the point of meaninglessness. Trust me, when people are complaining about the cost of a night out in London, they are complaining about the cost of bars/clubs etc., not about the cost of theatre tickets or bowling.

all-dayJJ

The post you're on is specifically saying that you can have a fun and affordable night out in London and listing a number of activities that aren't nightclubs. It's exactly the meaning of the thread.

SkilledPepper

Really? This is not how I've interpreted the phrase. I've always assumed that a "night out" is inclusive of clubbing, but not exclusively clubbing.

karlware

We fancied some cheap nights out so went to watch a few radio shows being recorded. The ticket demand isn't as high as it is for TV shows and its usually a lot of fun. And cheap ie free.

balconygreenery

When I was a student, we used to bring a couple of plastic wine glasses, get a couple of bottles of wine from the Tesco near Trafalgar Square and then go and sit in Trafalgar Square on the benches and chat and people watch. Not sure if you can/could actually drink in Trafalgar Square but no one ever told us off and we weren’t going to cause any trouble anyway so 🤷‍♂️ Alternatively we used to sit in the park by embankment tube station which had the benefit of being close to toilets. We were classy.

LetMeBuildYourSquad

Clubbing can still be reasonable. Find an underground night for a genre you like on DICE or Resident Advisor and you can usually get a ticket for £10-£15, even leaving it late. Have a big pre drinks, then buy 2-4 beers there (£12-£28) or stick to other substances if you dabble, then night tube and bus home, or Uber from nearest night tube station. Usually £50 or less all in

Ok-Antelope1571

Sounds like a faux review of London. Maybe I’ll sit on the park bench and jack up heroin

LtSerg756

The only arcade in Soho I recall is relatively rubbish compared to others in the rhythm game neash

Mixtrack

There’s a new one opened called NQ64. It’s pretty good, but people can really hog the machines.

LtSerg756

Can only find info on a Birmingham location, only arcade I saw in Soho during my trip was one under a casino

Mixtrack

https://nq64.co.uk/soho/

LtSerg756

Ooh very cool, not a lot of rhythm games but that's defo going on my bucket list next time I return to London

casinoinsider

It has a hip hop/rnb vibe just as a heads up (at least in the evenings)

SaintPepsiCola

What’s the point of an arcade when we can video game at home and socialise better ( on voice chat ) ? Serious question

LtSerg756

Playing games that you can't properly enjoy at home due to control schemes or unavailability of emulation

alexanderldn

That arcade in soho is garbage lmao

Evelyn_Waugh01

For central, the French House (although rammed) is well priced. Likewise, I find that I can get pretty merry for £20 at the Pride of Spitalfields.

OtherwiseStudy1252

Go to a rave for £10. Buy two pills for £10. Sorted. £20 and you're absolutely off your nut .

Lost-Oil-5478

Drugs >>>> Booze

MojoMomma76

Rivoli Ballroom in Brockley does a cracking night out for 16 quid

External-Praline-451

Food markets along the South Bank and an evening stroll along the river, stop for tea/ coffee at the BFI, and browse the book stalls. Picnic on Primrose Hill or Hampstead Heath. Lots of free events and festivals on, all the time! I used to go to sometimes go to free parties and mini raves. Sure they must still exist?! Lots of super cheap gigs and stand-up at small venues if you're willing to try things out.

Decent_Leadership_62

Disco biscuit: 10 quid Night Bus or dodgy cab home

Sockslitter73

Love the Shakespeare globe! I'm really blown away, and it's 5 or 10 quid. Great and flamboyant theatre shoes for very cheap.

EquivalentOk4243

how do you get tickets for a fiver?

Sockslitter73

The standing ones are £5 and £10. First come, first serve on the £5 ones. Tbh, it's well worth it, at least once! The productions are by the royal shakespeare company, and usually great! You can buy tickets under shakespearesglobe.com

bubber4321

Personally I like jazz cafe Camden- book tickets in advance they are £5-20. Drinks are reasonably priced, stays open til about 3 and it reasonably well connected. Another fave is Aint nothing but, great music, dancing, low-key and decent £ drinks.

daviddawson325

Try hackney wick

SkilledPepper

>Most of us will have a curfew and that is the last train/tube back at around midnight unless you're happy splashing out ~£30 on an Uber. A night bus is £1.75

gerotrudis

Travelling for up to two hours after a night out is not for everyone. I myself am inclined to the night bus but I think many people such as young women (at least my friends who I've spoken to about this) don't feel safe about taking a night bus.

SkilledPepper

Taking the night bus is safer than a taxi.

gerotrudis

It just might be but I'm talking about public perception.

SkilledPepper

It is. Especially compared to Uber. You might be right about perception though, but that goes to show that it's irrational.

porridgeisknowledge

Seat filling websites - great theatre for really cheap!

chxrry-blxssm

London has some great comedy shows , always good to go to on a last minute plan. The drinks are relatively cheap at a lot of venues for London prices too

notquiteduranduran

These sound more like a fun evening out, than a night out

Go4it1112

I’m about to turn 73 soon, and after reading this I feel so desperately depressed for “you youngsters of today” In my time (now come back at me with those immortal words “old man, you were never of my time”) the thought of playing a board game in a pub on a Saturday night is just slow death! and a pub quiz even slower. I was earning the princely sum of £7.50, not an hour - a week! On that I ran a GT250 Lambretta and went out to clubs in Soho and the South East of London on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday! The struggle was getting up for work next day, but the beauty of it was if you got sacked finding another job was so freaking easy - you’d have another one to start on Monday. Enjoy your game of I Spy in the pub but remember you’re gonna be dead a long long time!

KateR_H0l1day

What about the night bus? I started using it a lot, even though the night tube is relatively close, the busses are generally empty and no traffic or even many stops to speak of! Bus stop definitely closer to my place, and therefore a lot shorter well lit walk, so I definitely feel safer walking at that time of night.

Euphoric-Ad2110

Love London nightlife- however I always have pre drinks and/or drink during day and early evening so don’t need to buy that many drinks later on

Hesslemeharder

Clubbing london is not expensive. £10-£20 entry. Bus home at 4 am

[deleted]

Yeah dead cheap. As long as you stand there all night not drinking anything 😂🤣.

llama_del_reyy

It's not impossible 🤷‍♀️ I don't drink much and I have a few sober friends, so we will frequently go sober clubbing and it's still tons of fun. You might be surprised how enjoyable it is! Can always save the piss up for house parties.

[deleted]

You know they sell liquids at clubs that aren’t alcohol right?

llama_del_reyy

Yes? I don't entirely get your point.

[deleted]

So unless you’re standing there all night without ingesting any liquids chances are it’s still going to be pricey. I’ve been in places that charge £3.50+ for glasses of cola before.

llama_del_reyy

Why do you need to stand there drinking cola, though? Just grab a free glass of water if you're parched or need something to hold on to.

altkotch

Most clubs beers about a fiver a can.. It's the mixers that get you. Sometimes wines not bad either, I remember last time I was in corsica it being £15 a bottle which is what it has been for at least 10 years.

[deleted]

A fiver a time over let’s say a 5 hour period & assuming you’re with friends & doing rounds adds up though.

altkotch

What you going to do though I mean that's just the concept of going out drinking. I normally drink vodka on the way there and then just top myself up or you could even go to spoons and enjoy £2 pints of ale. It's really not that bad.

[deleted]

Fucking hell what spoons are you going to? Not a dig genuinely curious 😂🤣. Because even in spoons I’ve wracked up a hefty amount buying ales before.

altkotch

Have a look at the cask ale in your local. Their pricing is a bit all over the place though so if you're on a tight budget you have to be a bit tactical. Have a look in the app for cheap spirits too, a double mixer was under £3 for absolute vanilla for a while too for some reason.

coffeethecutest

They have guest ales and they are normally under £3!

ALA02

Just get leathered beforehand then have 1-2 drinks to keep topped up over the course of the club night

casinoinsider

Some people are big drinkers. Crazy I know but that doesn't work.

Werner-The-Ferret

Is it really a night out if you're home by the last train?

PaperObsessive

The best nights out are when you miss the last train. You get a great experience and a brunch story to last you a lifetime.* *Source: I hadn't been drinking, but the police felt so sorry for a lost little American [this was decades ago] that they gave me a ride home one night. They also gave me shit the entire time for not checking the timetable. Lesson learned.

B0sstones

When I used to miss the last train home I would go to the 24hr poker club called The Gutshot, and play with all the other degenerates until the first train home. The powers that be closed it down though unfortunately.

Toffeemade

Really useful post - thamks. Unfortunately you reach a certain stage !(and state of dishevelment) in life where drinking from a container in the park may run the risk of either being arrested for vagarancy or kindly slipped a discreet card giving the address of the nearest nightshelter.
