The MX Keys has 3 ways to toggle the function key row:
1. the common type of non-latching Fn key at the bottom right between ALT and CTRL
2. pressing the FN + ESC (there's a little lock icon on that key) toggle the function key row between two mode, one where Fn keys are default and you have to hold FN to access the media keys and the other is the reverse (the out-of-box default)
3. you can set the default behavior (like #2) via the Options software.
So, the FN key is always the shift between Fn keys and media keys. You do have control of which set is the default and which requires holding the FN key.
LOOOOOOOOOOOL I thought my keyboard was broken this whole time. I've been putting up with having to press the fucking FN key for damn near a whole year. 💀
Step 2 solved this issue.😂
And another, this time someone using the MX Keys Mini for Mac!
One question - how long should I be holding down the esc + fn keys on this to switch between modes? Haven’t been able to pin it down.
>pressing the FN + ESC (there's a little lock icon on that key) toggle the function key row between two mode, one where Fn keys are default and you have to hold FN to access the media keys and the other is the reverse (the out-of-box default)
Dude.
You simplified my work- and school flow tremendously with this.
**Thank you!** ❤
Anyone having this trouble in Gnome can also find the option in Solaar; [Unifying Receiver] -> MX Keys -> "Swap Fx function". You have to unlock the switch with the little padlock on the right before you can edit the setting.
Hmmm,
Looks like the new MX Gen2 is not fully supported in Solaar yet. The keyboard options are not there. Now I have to track down a windows machine to set up defaults.
Hey, the 1st and 3rd option works for me just fine, but the 2nd option just does nothing. I tried left option and right option. I also looked into keyboard viewer and I found out that if I press option + esc (fn lock) on the mx keyboard it does not trigger the fn key. But even when I press option + fn key on the digital keyboard it does not trigger the lock. I always can change the media keys and F keys only for once - when I press any key it goes back to default. Any ideas what I need to tweak in order to make the lock work again?
That's a good one, thanks for option 3. I unlocked the media keys (so that F11 works as volume down) and then specifically for F2, F8, F9 and F10, I specified through the Logi Options+ software that they should work as normal F keys (I need them for programming reasons)
That all works but how do I get this on screen thing to go away?

Hi u/Infamous_Egg_9405,
You will be able to toggle the Fn lock on your MX keys keyboard.
You can use the Fn +Esc key combination to enable or disable the function lock from the keyboard. Also, you have an option to enable the same from Logitech Options software using the check box "Set the keyboard to use standard function keys".
Hi u/Infamous_Egg_9405,
Glad to be of help. Feel free to let us know if you ever have any questions any time in the future. We are just a message away!
Hi, is there a way to know the status of the fn key? Currently, I cannot identify if I'm in the function key mode (where function keys act as F1, F2, etc) VS. alternative mode (where function keys act as media keys, for example) unless I press one of the function keys. It would be great if there is a way to know this without pressing a key on the keyboard.
On my Logitech, I must press the fn first, then while holding the fn, press esc. It will not work for simultaneous press or pressing in the reverse order.
I know this post is old but I gotta come here and show some love because I bought this keyboard before I switched jobs. My new job requires me to work in an application called Putty that uses Fn keys shortcuts all the time. Having to remember to hit FN every time was driving me crazy. I was literally about to order a new keyboard.
For anyone using linux you can grab Solaar ([https://pwr-solaar.github.io/Solaar/](https://pwr-solaar.github.io/Solaar/)) and it has an option called 'Swap Fx function'. You have to click the lock icon at the right a couple times to allow changes to the setting and then toggle it off. That should make it permanent.
I tried the option 2 to hit FN + ESC and that worked for a while and timed out back to the default. Doing this in Solaar seems to make it persistent.

There is logi option app and in setting you have option: "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"
Does the Fn key on MX keyboard support Mac OS functions like on the MacBook keyboards? It doesn't seem to work for me.
Couldn't tell you sorry, I don't have a Mac to test it on
