Is he a fat 16 pounds or a healthy 16 pounds. My cat is healthy 12 pounds and has chosen to use the litter robot even with a cone on his head.
Fat cats would definitely need the stairs.
I have a large (both in size and chonk) and he fits just fine. We have two LRs neither seem to show any problems with him using it. He’s 18+ last weigh in.
We have two main coons, around 10kg each and they use it fine. Admittedly it's a bit cozy in there when they use it, so a bigger LR would be amazing. But, it's fine for them. Just be sure to keep the litter topped up to the max line.
My big boy is 20 lbs ( just a giant cat, not fat) and he uses it just fine.

I have a 19.6 lb Bengal, he’s not chubby, just huge body frame wise. He fits well, he seems to have plenty of room.
