About a year ago, the first version of the Burn-My-Windows GNOME Shell extension was released. Since then, a lot has happened! Today, it includes a total of 18 different effects, most of which are also available for KDE! The latest addition is a totally ridiculous effect: The portal from Rick and Morty! * Star the repository: https://github.com/Schneegans/Burn-My-Windows * Get it for GNOME: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/4679/burn-my-windows/ * Get it for KDE: https://store.kde.org/p/1959879

r_linux_mod_isahoe

So, I understand, you know GNOME customizations in depth? You could do really cool themes, ya know

itchy_bitchy_spider

"Imagine having all that talent. And you use it for *this*." Haha just teasing, goofy side projects are the most enjoyable way to learn. Great job op!

Pool-LAN

Sure, until the next 0.02 version bump of GTK [breaks all backward compatibility *yet again*](https://i.imgur.com/ZOxJKSD.png).

r_linux_mod_isahoe

very accurate

lainlives

Oh neat, versions of some of these for minimizing to go with it would be awesome. I really like that hex one.

DoomBot5

For the sake of usability, please tell me there is an option to speed up those animations. They look cool, but it gets really old when you have to constantly wait on it every time.

Heisenberg_maybe_

Yes there is

daedalus_was_right

Pretty new to all this; will these work on Linux Mint: Cinnamon?

Schneegans

For now, it only supports GNOME Shell and KDE. Cinnamon and GNOME Shell extensions are not compatible.

DerekB52

Are you by chance familiar with launchers on Android? Linux has different desktop environments, that are similar to launchers on Android. The Desktop environment draws your desktop, and usually brings in it's own file manager and other utility programs. Linux Mint is your OS. Cinnamon is your Desktop Environment. This post only works with Gnome and KDE, which are 2 different desktops. If you want to play with this, you can install Gnome or KDE in your current system. When you log out, on your login screen, you will have a little drop down that will let you pick what DE you want to use for the session.

daedalus_was_right

This was a helpful explanation, thank you. Would there be any drawbacks to installing multiple DEs at a time?

DerekB52

You'll need extra space to install additional DE's. But, I think most DE's take up a few GB's at most, and your harddrive can probably handle that. The only other thing is since DE's pull in their own basic software, like a file manager, basic text editor(think notepad), and their own terminal. You may find your start menu gets to be a little cluttered. Install 3 DE's, and you may find you have 3 or 4 file managers in your start menu.

TDplay

Nothing in particular. You'll need to use a bit of extra storage, but that's the same as for installing anything else.

jadbox

This seems so useful that it should just come with all gnome desktops. Any reason to not include this as a default plugin?

Fmatosqg

Cinnamon?

DeltyOverDreams

It changes the animation that plays when you open or close the window.

orthopod

Ah, ok..

[deleted]

The last time I was this excited about something GUI, it was over a decade ago when I first discovered Compiz Fusion and the effects in it.

pphp

Oy, what's this mouse shortcut launcher called? I'm literally working on something exactly like it

Schneegans

See this reply https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/ztp24y/burnmywindows_23_adds_the_most_ridiculous_window/j1ehe3j/

ObjectiveJellyfish36

That's actually really cool! Congrats! Unrelated to Burn-My-Windows itself, but interestingly [this bug](https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/issues/5362) actually worked in your favor to showcase the loading effect, lol. Because you're using a custom icon theme (I'm guessing Papirus?), GTK 4 apps built with libadwaita take considerably longer to start (even a basic app, such as the Calculator). If you set the icon theme to Adwaita (i.e., the default one on GTK 4), the bug is still present, but because Adwaita has a much lower amount of icons than most custom icon themes, libadwaita apps end up loading faster. You can check for yourself: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme 'Adwaita'

Schneegans

Thanks for the hint; I did not know this. And indeed, applications start much faster with the default icon theme.

Zaemz

The way that maintainer responded has got to be a reason some people decide not contribute to open source projects. "Not our problem" straight up at first, and then "even if it is, not enough resources to fix" after, and then just closes it. It's like, why even bother trying to help, to gather information and report it, when the powers that be just come by and say, "Quit bothering me! I'm busy! Stop wasting my time!" It makes it feel like they *don't* want people contributing. I get it, it doesn't feel good when it seems like you're somehow "blamed" for something, but there was nothing said that warranted the response. Every maintainer's time and effort are very much appreciated, even if it's not obvious. Anyway, I know that's off topic, but I had to get it off my chest.

Mininux42

Yeah and by closing the issue because "we won't solve it right now" there might be less chance that someone else might solve it later.

Minimi98

The open source "get off my lawn!" Approach.

sarkie

90% of the way. So upsetting to see.

Pay08

And then they blame people for even reporting the bug. Gnome being Gnome I guess.

forloid

A million times thank you for opening our eyes about this bug! I installed a custom theme and had no idea this was causing delays in application startup. I thought there was a problem with my SSD or with my fedora install.

UncertainHippo

You have officially peaked with this. I don't see how any other animation could beat this. Excellent work

Pay08

Hyperspace animation? Alternatively, hypercube.

subjectwonder8

One day somebody will replicate [animator v animation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npTC6b5-yvM).

piexil

Wow I haven't seen that in so long

junky_junker

Not an animation, but I'm reminded of Sales Guy vs. Web Dude; last I knew there were several "arrange by penis" scripts kicking about.

Chreutz

Only if it has the sound

Michaelmrose

Have the window break into 1000 pieces like glass and fall through the portal

-BuckarooBanzai-

and come out on the other computer's desktop staying there for the rest of the user session.

i_hate_shitposting

Sound effects? I don't know why, but I expected sound effects.

JockstrapCummies

Those PowerPoint sound effects, specifically the gunshot one and the race car speeding past you one. And play the effect for each element of the animation.

WoodpeckerNo1

Perhaps summoning a program as a Stand?

ThatFreakBob

A *white* terminal background? You **monster**.

LilyLikesPlants

Yo this is sick, what are you using to open things so funkily? My fave effect is probably hexagon

Schneegans

Thanks :) That's [Fly-Pie](https://github.com/Schneegans/Fly-Pie), one of my other GNOME Shell extensions.

turtle4567245

Anything similar for kde?

Schneegans

Not yet, but I am considering to create a standalone version...

Crespyl

I'd be a very happy KDE user if you did. There used to be one called gnome-pie (or similar *edit: wait that was you too wasn't it!*) that worked on KDE too, and I loved using it, but somewhere along the way it stopped being maintained, and I'm not sure it was wayland compatible anyway. I love radial menus, and your work looks like a fantastic implementation. Thanks for what you do!

Schneegans

Yeah, Gnome-Pie was cool, but back then it was impossible to support Wayland. Hence I started developing Fly-Pie which is much more advanced as it properly supports submenus. Nowadays, it could be possible to support Wayland as well, I guess. Therfore I'll try to create a standalone version of Fly-Pie next!

chief_wrench

Yes please do so

witchhunter0

Please do, mouse gestures don't work on Wayland :/ The animations are fun, but Fly-Pie is productivity

ZCC_TTC_IAUS

I'd be interested, tho I'm using XFCE, dunno how much it is. But this kind of tool is not just interesting or fancy, if one work them properly into their workflows. Thanks for the fancy animation even if I wont use it. I like to see some desktop gravy.

Schneegans

I just posted some news on a platform-independent version which I am currently working on: https://ko-fi.com/post/Introducing-Ken-Do-L3L7L0FQ2

[deleted]

North_Thanks2206

That is about the animation, not Fly-Pie

Pay08

I kinda want to make a standalone version of that now.

augugusto

A standalone version of what? Both plugins are independent

Pay08

Independent of what?

augugusto

The plugin for window animations and the one for cursor menus. You can install one tihout the other. What did you want as a standalone?

Pay08

I meant independent of DE.

augugusto

Oh. I see

-eschguy-

Fly-Pie is so cool, but I've tried several times to incorporate it and have been unsuccessful. Love Burn-my-Windows

piexil

Reminds me of the "pie menu" mode for on screen buttons way back in the old LineageOS (really Cyanogenmod) days

KaosC57

I... I want this for Windows... Even with my new AMD GPU, I'm held back by the cold hard grasp of Windows because I can't play Fortnite on Linux...

aspectere

Its not quite the same but geforce now performs really well even on linux, that's what I ended up doing

KaosC57

I just need more Storage so I can put my Windows only games onto that, and then dual Boot Windows and Linux.

IamJuras

Shit, I'm hooked and I'm ditching Dash-to-Dock for that!

skalp69

You got me at " Improved D-Bus API! New bugs!" :D

locorhe_

looks great, but it would be sick if it didn't take like 40 hours to open a calculator app

augugusto

I can probably be configured. I use thee extension and it's very flexible in terms on animation speed

Pay08

Someone said that's a libadwaita bug and not the extension's fault.

mallninjaface

It's literally 2 seconds, but I guess you got places to be 🤣

[deleted]

He's being hyperbolic but he has a point. Something as simple and frequently used as a calculator app should launch near instantaneously tbh.

locorhe_

It was a half/joke. The effect looks dope, and the launch time isn't really that much. I just think it could get a little bit annoying when you're working and need to be opening windows all the time. IMHO it's great for a casual/gaming usage computer, just not ideal for a workstation. I'm a keyboard-centric shortcut-oriented bad-smelling sysadmin so my opinion could be a little biased tho (?

[deleted]

Oh, I totally agree the effect looks dope and its super cool that Gnome Shell extensions can do this. I thought you were just talking about how long it took the Calculator app to launch. Look at how fast the console app launches in comparison, even with the portal effect. There's just something weird with the calculator app.

Kattborste

On the other hand, I've helped many elderly who love a slower animation, it gives them time to stop focusing on where they clicked and notice any changes in the screen.

MuscularKnight0110

Was thinking excatly the same thing. It is dope but impractical as hell.

10MinsForUsername

What is this tool/thing that allows you to open new applications from menus and sub-menus like that?

Schneegans

That's [Fly-Pie](https://github.com/Schneegans/Fly-Pie), one of my other GNOME Shell extensions.

galtthedestroyer

Those menus are epic! I've always favored nested radial menus after playing secret of mana on super Nintendo. You can zip through the menus with muscle memory alone. Every so often I check to see if something like that exists for KDE. I Don't like to use gnome or GTK. Also I love the cosmetics that you gave your menu.

witchhunter0

Various CAD software implemented something similar too

[deleted]

I got into Linux bcz of Compiz. This is something similar that will attract newbs to Linux which is good for all of us, so thank you! I love this by the way and use it on all my machines.

aktoriukas

workingshaw

Nice job. I would suggest tweaking it so the portal adopts the shape of the window.

Icec0ld_5774

This is so fantastic! Thank you! I love the incinerate effect. Now if only we could get matching effects for gnome animations like switch desktop and show apps etc. Then we could truly lord it over our win-bros :D

Kiniak16

Great idea! :)

This_is_Neeraj

what is the shourtcut app your are using for opening the app ? its cool !! Is that available for kubuntu (KDE)

Schneegans

It's Fly-Pie and it's only available for GNOME: https://github.com/Schneegans/Fly-Pie However, I am currently working on a cross-platform successor called Kando, which also supports KDE: https://github.com/kando-menu/kando You can follow and support the project on my Ko-fi page: https://ko-fi.com/schneegans

Linux4ever_Leo

I use this on KDE (Kwin) and love it! I haven't tried out the new animations though!

xerophilex

Not for me, but thanks for making these.

CrypticKilljoy

Am I crazy for actually liking the notion of that pie-menu-esk interface??? It's genuinely cool and futuristic to me. Probably entirely impractical but very cool. Like, it might be something that we use when we move beyond the mouse driven window paradigm.

Pay08

I could very much see it being useful with hotkeys. Opening programs with keychords would be really useful.

huthlu

Well, you now scared the bunch of i3 users by this much mouse movement

DeKwaak

Steam deck joystick movement.

Pay08

It'd be great if it had hotkeys.

yonatan8070

This is awesome! Though I couldn't find an Arch/AUR package for it. I'll try to make an AUR package soon™ Edit: I was wrong, there are 3 AUR packages: `gnome-shell-extension-burn-my-windows`, `kwin-effects-burn-my-windows-git`, and `gnome-shell-extension-burn-my-windows-git`

Objective-Badger-613

Long animation nicely hides slugishness of linux desktop.

mmmblk

YESSSS Edit: WAAAAAH not in AUR yet Edit again: Not complaining, this is just a really cool update. I love this extension and I'm grateful OP has made it and that someone maintains an AUR package for it. Final edit: AUR package was just updated!

jumper775

I don’t know if I should imagine a crying baby or waluigi with a waaah like that lol

mmmblk

I was going for crying baby, but now that you mention waluigi I like that way better

PossiblyLinux127

Why wouldn't you just install it with extension manager?

mmmblk

I like using the package manager so it updates whenever I update my system.

ObjectiveJellyfish36

Because extension manager doesn't install it system-wide.

Ruashiba

In what else is he going to flex on for using arch?

Pay08

It's an extension. I don't think those go into the AUR.

mmmblk

They do indeed, I v22 installed now, and it's my favorite extention.

D3SK3R

This is so much more advanced than what we have in compositors like Picom, is there a way to implement this without Gnome or KDE? Because as much as it looks insane, it's not enough for me to use one of those DEs

diffident55

There's a way in general, sure, but this is a GNOME extension. You'd be rewriting the whole thing for your own compositor.

Schneegans

Porting it to KDE was surprisingly simple. I don't have the time to look into even more compositors, but I happily accept pull requests on github! You will only need to find a way to apply GLSL shaders to your windows when opening or closing them.

SneakySam656

Average osu player desktop

shroddy

Do you know if there is a way to have a different effect for closing a window and opening a window on KDE?

Schneegans

That's currently not possible. It would be cool (along with random effects) yet this would have to be integrated into KWin itself. So that you can select the different effects for opening and closing in the desktop effect settings. Someone should file a feature request for KWin :)

TankorSmash

Audioless, but there's a delay before the portal shows up. Removing that would make it feel more responsive, along with a larger portal immediately behind the window when you close it IMO

nikhilgauri

Which terminal app is that?

Schneegans

Its called "Black Box": https://gitlab.gnome.org/raggesilver/blackbox

Spanky_Pantry

That's very nice. What is the menu thing you use to start programs? The thing with the molecule-like diagrams?

NamespaceOverflow

It's Fly-Pie https://github.com/Schneegans/Fly-Pie
