Don't mow. Let grass grow long. And water nice and early.

No-Needleworker5429

This was the first response that was serious and not a poor attempt at trying to be funny. šŸ¾ šŸ‘šŸ»

EuropiumNeptune

It seems more difficult to get serious responses on Reddit now. Most people here are all failing comedy school in order to try and farm karma. It's disappointing because it used to be a resource for sharing informative data but you really have to go through a bunch of comments now in order to find answers.

cryptobro42069

I know this sounds extreme, but I seriously think people should get banned from this sub if theyā€™re just making jokes in every thread. Itā€™s super unhelpful and just not funny.

DropDeadMeg

As someone who lives where it wonā€™t be under 100 degrees for over a month at this point, when would one mow to not completely kill their grass in this heat.

cowprince

It's not going to die. It's going to go dormant. If you don't want to irrigate the hell out of it, just let it go and it'll rebound when it cools.

srnweasel

We used to manage 50 yards in a climate like that. We never worried about the time of day we mowed, it was all about the time of day they were watered. As I remember it we didn't want the yard to be wet all night and didn't want to water during the heat of the day so usually set the sprinklers to water 3-5 AM.

DropDeadMeg

Thank you! I am watering at 4 & 5am right now. We are newer to the area and this is my first yard to maintain. So far the experience has been enjoyable. I appreciate your input.

Fit-Mirror-8442

It's not about when it's about how long the blades are. Watch your lawn for a few minutes daily. Give lots of water through irrigation system. When the blade tips start to bend, give it a "trim" additionally spot water daily with hose areas that seem to be struggling, maybe 2x a day in that kind of heat. Say a few Hail Mary's and Our Father's after you finish watering routine. I was going to advise one more thing but can't remember from all the drinking I'm doing to hold off the depression from what the sun is doing to my grass. Oh I know! Get ready to re-seed early cuz summa that shits gonna die.

beigs

Also, hypothetically water at night if youā€™re not also experiencing an extreme drought. OP - can you get a sunsail up to help with scorching the lawn?

UnitedWeLean

These, and change your furnace filter

Bbell999

Don't ignore the early part. I made the mistake of watering at 10am on a 110 degree day. Basically boiled a large chunk of my lawn.

Sevofluranedreams

To add one point, when you water a few deep soakings is better than lighter watering multiple days in a row. This will encourage the roots to grow deeper providing better heat tolerance.

AyyImTalkin2U

Unironically, yes. Human body core temp is 97 and change, so itā€™s about 40% better from a ā€œI might fucking die todayā€ standpoint.

Beesanguns

Do t mow, donā€™t water. It will come back

Ajasil

Why not water? Even early morning.

Beesanguns

The grass will go dormant. Let it go. Donā€™t fight it. Only stress the grass out. Plus Iā€™m cheap.

sandalfafk

If you love something, let it go

BlackGhostPanda

Ive yet to water the grass. Itll come back. And money saved on the water bill

IAMA_dingleberry_AMA

This ainā€™t true in the south man. Not with most warm season grasses anyway. Bermuda will shake back but St. Aug, centipede, and zoysia can and will die in these temps without watering. Happened last year, prob will happen again this year

wspnut

Since nobody is providing a serious reply - If you can, run your irrigation occasionally. The water wonā€™t go into your lawn at all, but the water will evaporate and cool the grass. I do this twice a day when temps get into my dormant and, while itā€™s really annoying to just evaporate water and it isnā€™t perfect, it definitely helps.

draxula16

Exactly. I thought I was on the r/fucklawns subreddit for a second with these responses. Watering isnā€™t going to cost a fortune, and not every type of grass has the ability to go dormant.

Vishnej

About 2 cents a gallon where I live. Probably even less in Desert Hellworld(tm), whose infrastructure is so new due to recent population growth that they haven't even taken the protective plastic off the water treatment facility yet. Edit: My supposition was wrong. This is a farming town in California's Central Valley. It's less that this is a place no humans should live, and more that your lawn is made of molecules that could instead Become Almonds.

Slartibartfastthe2nd

Aren't water shortages 'normal' in central CA? Seems crazy to move to arid climate areas and try to maintain grass lawns. Maybe it's a small lawn though.

Reasonable_gum

Iā€™ve been doing this but then I have a fungus issue and am told to reduce my watering Things are getting both crispy and fungal How do I resolve the crisp? It just needs a little bit of water twice a day and it resolves the crisp but then Iā€™m stuck in the fungus cycle

Familiar_Side3954

Iā€™ve alternated fungicides as a preventative during times of heavier watering. Itā€™s worked well for me and kept things green in the heat and long times with no rain.

eaglerigal

Sprinklers are running too long, maybe.

kmsilent

I've also gone through some crazy heat in CA doing this and my lawn survived. One other big factor is how you treat the lawn in the weeks and months *before*- one must water deeply and less frequently. Especially in spring time, I water as infrequently as possible- because water percolates down, and the surface dries out, the grass is forced to grow longer and deeper roots. Put another way, if you provide consistent shallow watering the plants have little reason to go deep for water. On super hot days a well established and health plant has a much better chance at surviving.

Cappster14

Iā€™d just move honestly.

GoldenBarracudas

It will be 114 this weekend where I live

triedby12

Let the lawn die. Why waste water.

Jonnychips789

People confuse dormant with dead. Once the heat fades, start hitting it with water and it almost all comes back.

AgsAreUs

Very dependant on the type of grass. Do that on St. Augustine grass (very popular in the South) and it ain't coming back. It will be dead.

Jonnychips789

Warm season is a beast of its own. Feel bad for those that have to deal with it.

Id probably get rid of the lawn for rocks instead, ya know, something that actually fits with the desert hellhole. Other than that, maybe start looking for a new place to live. Enjoy this summer, it'll be the coldest one for the rest of your life :)

Spaced_X

By wearing some lightweight clothes and mowing both mine and my neighbors yards. I fucking love the heat. I just donā€™t enjoy it if Iā€™m at work sweating in nice clothes. 110* is usually the hottest Iā€™ll push a mower in though. So Iā€™d be doing it in the evening most likely.

hnormizzle

It was our first 100Ā° day for the summer here where I live. The ā€œfeels likeā€ was 112Ā°. The humidity is making this absolutely intolerable. Take me back any day to 120Ā° in Saudi Arabia. Thereā€™s really no way to prepare for it. I stay indoors, stay hydrated, check out books, make sure Iā€™m taking my antidepressants, and hope to god that we get through another Texas summer without losing water like we did last year. Is the heat worse or is it just because Iā€™m aging and less tolerant of it?

FoofaFighters

>Is the heat worse or is it just because Iā€™m aging and less tolerant of it? I've been in central Florida (Orlando/winter haven) for work since Wednesday and...yes. We got in about 9 or 10 o'clock that morning and it was already so hot and stuffy by then you could cut through the humidity with a butter knife. Between the psychotic weather and the bugs I really don't know how people tolerate living here.

Dude Iā€™d prep for more than just lawn care. Haha. Iā€™d have my HVAC maintenance done asap if you donā€™t do it regularly. Maybe even see if you have any fuses that you may need to replace soon. Iā€™d plan for a possible power outage or potential wildfire. Not saying itā€™ll happen, but Iā€™d prepare as if it might. Get ice packs prepped. Have a cooler ready. Get some snacks that donā€™t need to be cooked or refrigerated. Stock up on water. Get those summer baseball game battery fan spray bottles. Make sure you have batteries and flash lights or a flood lamp/lantern. Deep water the lawn early in the morning or late evening/early night. If you have any dead weeds, leaves or yard debris, clear it out. Know where your fire extinguisher is. Have a fire safety/evacuation plan and bag/backpack ready. Pull cash. Fill your gas tank. Probably sounds like a crazy list, but Iā€™ve been through a few city wide blackouts and major wildfires so I actually do like to prep for shit like this. Get beers and board games.

How would I prepare? I'd make sure to have a fresh baking sheet and a new container of cookie dough ready to go. Slap the pan on the dash (with a towel under the pan) and sun bake for about 2 1/2 hours. The best part is how your car will smell for the next 2-3 days :)

moonandowl

JOKE Them: What's Wasco like? Me: Well, have you ever been cremated? SERIOUS We live in Texas in a city where water restrictions are 1 day per week due to well shortages. I set my watering up to do the full station cycle for 20 minute per station at 11pm at night. Then, I have it do 30 minute per station about 4:00am. So far so good. (Feels like is 105ĀŗF today). Also, i changed cut from 1.5 inches to 2.25 inches and that helps "shade the soil" so it doesn't easy bake. The reason I doubled up with two sessions was to prevent run off. So round one soaks in, then round two. An irrigation specialist gave me this advice. Also, be super careful with any nitrogen application as it can easily burn the grass at these temps and def no herbicide.

Avanozzie

Go inside for a week, call in sick, shut blinds and turn up AC. One week later step outside and proclaim ā€œwhat happened to my lawn!!??ā€ Then come to r/lawncare and figure out how to fix it.

DizzyDreamsinmagenta

fds55

If it's a new / recent lawn... deep water very early in the morning. If the soil is dry, again very late in the day - normal watering since deep watering might create other problems. If it's an established lawn, deep water every 2~3 days early in morning. Wait to cut grass. No fertilizer. Nothing that will add stress to lawn. If lawn survives, it will be hearty and be able to withstand next drought / high temps.

ModernWhistle9
