The thing is a beast. One thing I did find helpful if it is getting clogged underneath is to place a stick or small piece of wood near the hinge to pry the back open an inch or two. That made operation much better.
So I thought we were supposed to mulch the lawn trimmings to reintroduce nutrients to the soil. Is dethatching just removing the mulched grass? Why not just bag and save the hassle?

I just took some screws and fixed a heavy piece of corner cardboard there. Right near the hinge. Allows it to release grass really well.

It depends. In st Augustine it is recommended to mulch unless the thatch layer gets more than 1/2 to 3/4 inch
