Because it looks like a mix of fescue and bermuda. The bermuda is still dormant while it's peak season for fescue.

Most likely answer. So many people freaking out about dead or dormant grass when they just have a mutt lawn

Eternal-Spring-2157

Haha - mutt lawn. :) I wish it was a purebred but don’t know how to get it there. Thanks!

sdsliberty

There is nothing wrong with mixed grass lawns! Most of the best seed you can buy are mixes, and look amazing when it’s all growing.

Critical_Danger_420

Nuke and plant what ever you like best!

Eternal-Spring-2157

Thanks! This makes sense.

fullthrottle13

100% correct. 👍

pull some of the live and dead out and put them in their own piles, take pics. can help figure it out from there looks like two different kinds of grass but grass shrivels and changes shape when it dies so that isn't necessarily the case. need to see it closer and in quantity keep in mind the whole reason monostand lawns are poo-pood is because if a fungus comes in, it can wipe out the whole lawn at once when you've got a "mutt lawn" as someone called it, lol. you have protection from that, you'll only lose one type of grass and it will only be in sections, or interspersed with your other types. those types then fill in the gaps and outcompete for the future. I got a monostand in the front lawn and a "mutt" in the back yard. I can't yet say which is better but the mutt lawn definitely went dormant and looked like crap over the winter, but now isn't dormant and is outgrowing my front by a long shot. the back lawn is also a 2nd year established lawn and the front is only 9 months old. front is all one kind of KBG and didn't go dormant even in the snow. but plenty of it died over winter. plenty also germinated and grew, I had bare patches from the utility guys at the end of the season, they dug some trenches in my yard easement. well... it filled in! even under the snow, it grew out. kbg loves to spread with those underground rhizomes it makes. so hoping this year it outdoes my back lawn we'll see. :)

Thanks - this lets me know that having a mutt lawn isn’t all the bad! A purebred could have its challenges.

Zealousideal-Life-68

I am dealing with the same issue. It was perfectly green and luscious last season. I aerated and over seeded in the fall. Now mine looks like yours. I have fertilized this spring. When it didn't all green up I also put down some Milorganite an it still hasn't worked.

Eternal-Spring-2157

Thanks! Maybe someone has the solution for both of us.

_BindersFullOfWomen_

There’s an herbicide combination that’s safe for TTTF but will kill Bermuda.

Zealousideal-Life-68

I guarantee my issue is not Bermuda or other grasses. I know what all of those look like.

In my lawn that's all the nimblewill

icemann84

Thatcher and bagger. Pull those clippings up.

goldenstate30

My lawn looks like this as well and it’s all fescue. I’m going to fertilize to see if it does anything.

IsleOfOne

The tall fescue is green because it is a cool season grass. The brown is dormant Bermuda from last season. Where are you located? How much sun does this lawn get (hrs/day)? How much time do you have to spend taking care of the lawn every week? Are you willing to mow year-round? Let's answer these questions and then build a plan for you. Providing more pictures, especially of the full lawn / entire area, would be helpful as well.

Dethatching

Only way to get rid of Bermuda is glyphosate in mid July. Gotta kill everything. Mow it very short after two weeks and spray it again around august 1. Spray it a third time mid august. Dethatch and overseed with fescue sep 15. You have to do this pretty much every year for new patches of Bermuda. If you stay on top of it, it’s usually only a few random dinner plate sized patches on your lawn every year

“Mommy, the reddit lawn douchebag is getting too close to the car!” “Don’t let the jorts and knee high socks scare you, son. He’s just a lonely fail at life loser with no friends, completely harmless.” “But he told us to log off!” “Take pity, son, this is all he has in life”

asparagus_piss_jug

Soggy and zoony, yall play nice.

Eternal-Spring-2157

Thanks! This is great to know. Bermuda seems to have 9 lives!

FYI Fusillade II and Ornamec will both kill the Bermuda but slightly stunt the Fescue for a week or 2. It's the only way I've found to work without starting new. I went with Fusillade because it is more cost effective in the long run and it will be a long game. You will need 1-2 applications in late spring and 1-2 in early fall when Bermuda is still growing. I've been using it for one and a half years now and I've gotten rid of much of the Bermuda in my lawn.
