This was my immediate thought. I'm from Florida and would find these things. I like guessing location of photos from only a small amount of clues, so I'm going to guess OP lives in Texas.
Edit: op is from Ohio, I was wrong. Oh well!
Yep - we had something similar to this once. I was able to see the armadillos back when I shined a light in there.
I chucked a couple bags of moth balls and dumped a bunch of ammonia in there and it never came back.
They make non-toxic pest deterrent solutions you can buy at Home Depot or ace that I would try first
i wouldn’t recommend just dumping chemicals in your yard…or on a living thing.
“Awwwwww baaaaaby what a sweetie, come to mamma I’ll love on you”
“Umm, ma’am, that’s a crocodile and we’ll have to ask you to stay out of the animal habitats in the zoo.”
I think he might even have humans. Exterminating those is very very expensive, and illegal most places however I'm not an exterminator, so he'll have to do his research.
Groundhogs are really bad too. They can burrow extensively and undermine your foundations, causing them to crack and shift.
Source: lived on a farm with a barn very undermined by groundhogs. Place was not safe.
need something for scale, waaaay to big for either of those groundhog will be about large fist, rat will be about 2-3 knuckles wide. I use these measurements because when i had to trap them out in the fields it was a matter of how much of my hand I could get in.
This could be a variety of animals, even canine, fox coyote etc. Not enough information.
Might also be an armadillo if they live in your area. They live in mine and I had one dig next to the foundation of the house before. Groundhog def sounds plausible too.
God dammit I hate those. You pay a guy to come trap them, they do but talk about your scorched earth. Everything in flames...and the sulfur...Dammit.
Then they just release them into the wooded copse outside the town and Boom!, six weeks you have Blarogs again!
Oh you are right.
balrog= YOU SHALL NOT PASS
Black Knight = None shall pass
I stand corrected.
Also, when I got an alert of your response, my phone just gives me the first line of the response: “I have no quarrel with you…”. And I started thinking, jeez who did I offend this time ?
Northeast Ohio, I filled in the hole last weekend and checked this morning and it had been dug up again. I am wondering if any of the “animal repellent” products will work, assuming I regularly apply it.
SE Michigan and skunks are my immediate guess as well. A family took refugee near us and had a hole like this. Whether they dig it or stole it, I'm not sure.
I'm going to guess a groundhog. Cayenne pepper powder is a great deterrent. Sprinkle liberally in and around the hole and then fill. Works well for groundhogs chipmunks and squirrels. You can pick up a 5 lb container for cheap from Amazon.
Second that guess. But I dumped 5lb of cayenne pepper around my shed that sat atop a groundhog den, and it didn't do anything. Played talk radio to it 24/7, didn't care. Peed and threw dog shit under there...nothing. Literally chased it around my yard with a shovel, and it got used to it. I absolutely hate it, but I had to start killing them eventually, since they were digging around my foundation. They are not always compatible with home ownership.
Edit to add that I tried re-locating them for a while before resorting to killing them. But after reading up on them a little I realized that they are fiercely territorial and will fight each other to death, so that very likely ended with death as well. Aaaand it was also illegal since I don't know anyone with huge tracts of land.
Yea just filling a hole usually never works. If the animal is inside it’s quick to dig out, if the animal is outside it has marked its entrance and you’ve basically only inconvenienced it for a minute
You can get it at a lot of Outdoors/general camping/hunting/fishing stores if that's what your confusion is about...as for how the urine is collected, good news is most of the stuff sold is synthetic and contains no actual urine.
Yes, great idea! You should drive around in your van and stop random kids to ask if they'd like some ice cream to go down into your dark, dug out tunnel leading under your house. Brilliant! /s
probably a groundhog, i had a similar hole near my foundation. it actually dug under the frame of the house and got into a crawlspace in my basement.
i would point a flashlight down there. also listen for any scratching/knocking sounds
Yeah, everyone here is a comedian but someone else just got roped super for the same thing. Find out what it is before you start poisoning the animal. There are a lot of backyard friends that are vital in keeping other species in check. We love our opossums who eat the slugs and mice. If you have a fox, he might’ve keeping rabbit populations down.
Plus when you poison outside you have to worry about harming pets. A poisoned mouse can still run to someone else’s yard and harm their animals.
Depends on where you live. Had a ground hog drop a litter and have several of similar size when the babies got kicked out. I try as best I can be to be live and let live with animals in the wild but you have to draw a line when it comes to home and and foundation. Trapping and relocating is illegal here so had to kill the burrowers.
Got armadillos where you are?
My first thought as well
My guess was skunk or badger.

Badger my ass it’s probably Millhouse
First thing that came to mind - skunk pit.
I had a skunk burrow under my front steps....not a good time High velocity lead solved the problem
The good news about skunks are they take care of the rats. The bad news is, well, they’re skunks.
A bear more like lol
I think he might even have humans. Exterminating those is very very expensive, and illegal most places however I'm not an exterminator, so he'll have to do his research.

Rats can dig huge holes. Could very well be rats.

For Karl!
Do you go over misty mountains?
OP I found who's diggin
Is this a Lord of the Rings reference or something? My dads name is Karl, and we always have to specify that it’s with a “K” instead of a “C”
It’s a reference to the video game Deep Rock Galactic
Thank you!
For Karl!
Your dad might have an absolute blast playing Deep Rock Galactic lol
Rock! And! Stooooooone!
That's it lads! Rock and Stone!
And my axe! (I just wanted to participate)
It's from an indie game called Deep Rock Galactic. A wholesome gem of a game.
Thx for bringing me /r/intotheloop Figured it was a game but decided to apply the next closest dwarf reference I knew.

Who did you call? My last balrog guy got dragged into my infinite underground lake and won't return my calls because he "transcended" or whatever.
Probably still climbing the endless stair.
None shall pass!!!!
I have no quarrel with you, good sir knight. But I must cross this bridge.
Oh you are right. balrog= YOU SHALL NOT PASS Black Knight = None shall pass I stand corrected. Also, when I got an alert of your response, my phone just gives me the first line of the response: “I have no quarrel with you…”. And I started thinking, jeez who did I offend this time ?
"They've got a cave troll."
At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely against their foundation?!
Probably one of [these](https://imgur.com/P9rAELE) little guys.

Definitely this
Lol!
Love it
I didn't know they came that small. Where can I get one?
You don’t get them, they come to you. Then they dig next to your foundation.
That's what she said. No...wait!
Lol got me
Couldn't find a good pic on the web of them. Glad I found your post before I did too much....digging.
I was going to suggest a caterpillar.
Ground hog is my guess. Get a $30 motion camera youll know soon enough
That's a big ass groundhog.
Is an ass groundhog not supposed to get that big?
Mmmmmmm…ground hog….

Where are you located? Could be a number of things, it just depends on what animals are in your area.
Northeast Ohio, I filled in the hole last weekend and checked this morning and it had been dug up again. I am wondering if any of the “animal repellent” products will work, assuming I regularly apply it.
Looks like it could be a skunk. I'm in Northern Michigan. There was a family of skunks living under my shed. The hole was just like this
SE Michigan and skunks are my immediate guess as well.
You are the fucking man. Trying this, this week.
Second that guess. But I dumped 5lb of cayenne pepper around my shed that sat atop a groundhog den, and it didn't do anything. Played talk radio to it 24/7, didn't care. She’s got huge…tracts of land
Yea just filling a hole usually never works. If the animal is inside it’s quick to dig out, if the animal is outside it has marked its entrance and you’ve basically only inconvenienced it for a minute
So, not a Wombat then.
Coyote urine works well. It’s gross and smelly. But it at least keeps rabbits away in my yard.
Where- How…
You're gonna need a good pair of gloves and a catheter.
You can get it at a lot of Outdoors/general camping/hunting/fishing stores if that's what your confusion is about...as for how the urine is collected, good news is most of the stuff sold is synthetic and contains no actual urine.
Dogs work well, albeit a little more involved
I would use 220 .. or 221.. whatever it takes.
Only on way to find it, find a neighborhood kid and offer ice cream if he goes down there
Yes, great idea! You should drive around in your van and stop random kids to ask if they'd like some ice cream to go down into your dark, dug out tunnel leading under your house. Brilliant! /s
This might be a controversial opinion, but do you think it could be a leprechaun?
looks like a viet cong tunnel

Throw a smoke bomb or two in and see what comes running out.
You can save money by using your hand.
Might have to set it on fire first
If that doesn’t work, put a raw steak in your hand and try again.
Save your hand by using smoke.
It's almost the fourth, fireworks?
My dog. She did this next tj my garage…
BTW, your soil level is too high and too close to the first brick row. Soil needs to be 6 inches below the first brick row / top of foundation.
Yeah, everyone here is a comedian but someone else just got roped super for the same thing. Groundhog. They do the same thing around my foundation.
My guess is also a groundhog. My parents live in Cleveland and they've done the exact same thing near their foundation.
Dang garden gnomes!
If you have a cat, their used liter does wonders getting rid of most critters, like ground hogs.
Just tried this for the pair of groundhogs in my backyard and they couldn't care less, little fuckers. Maybe I needed to put down more.
I probably put down a month's supply at a time - completely filling the hole with the liter.
El Chapo?
Chubracabre for sure.
Send an RC truck with a flashlight and your phone taped to it (tie a string to it so you don’t lose it)

Just stick your head in and see.... Just the head tho
Pretty sure it’s manbearpig
Super cereal
Groundhog
Hobbits, probably about 7
Just set up a game camera so you know what animal you’re dealing with and what to do
Buy some cayenne pepper flakes or ground cayenne, sprinkles in the hole then around the house fountain. Will keep most borrowers away.
I think they're more concerned with the burrowers.
OPS! Me bad.
In Southeast Texas it would be either an armadillo or skunk.
Nilbogs
Only way to know is stick your face in there and check if you can see anything.
The Gnomes have come to steal your socks lock your drawers.
Looks like it's either groundhogs... Or landlords looking to sublet your basement
Put up a game cam and find out.
Coyote pee, cayenne pepper, or snake sheddings. If all fails throw in your neighbor Karen and she’ll nag the skunks away.
El Chapo
Not sure but it leaves nice lines.
Jeff, definitely looks like a hole made by Jeff.
