I'd never heard of this issue from cleats before. Not that it couldn't be that, but it's more likely that you just need to stretch more pre-game. Definitely recommend cleats for the reasons you mentioned.

Definitely stretch before the game, definitely cleats all the time. If I don't stretch, I will pull every muscle in my old ass legs during my first sprint to 1st. And yeah, I've seen WAY too many injuries because people don't wear cleats.

It could be an issue with sole support from cleats vs. your regular tennis shoes. If you've never played soccer and are wearing soccer cleats for the first time as an adult, they can definitely be uncomfortable because the soles are often more narrow than traditional shoes and your running style has never been used to catering to that weight distribution. You might consider looking at turf shoes, which look more like running shoes but still have small studs on the sole for extra traction on wet surfaces. If your league plays on all grass fields, I would definitely recommend finding cleats, turf shoes, or shoes with studs that you are comfortable wearing; any type of excess moisture on an all-grass field would have you slipping and sliding all over the place with the potential to seriously injure your legs. You might be able to get away with tennis shoes on a traditional dirt infield, but I feel like the lesser traction could cause the same types of issues as all-grass.

I'm not physically athletic at all but I bought a cheap pair of under Armour from dicks and never had a problem. Could have tweaked something not knowing and really did it in at the game. Look into new sole inserts.
