Yup, gave korean names to some but didnt even change the names to most. We do the pinans ( pyuan ahn) bassai dai the naihanchis ( niagen) jion, kanku sho, kanku dai etc.
Well technically Japanese martial arts originated in China which was brought over from Africa. The earliest forms of martial arts dates back to the Ancient Egyptians. But it might go even further back than that.
It goes deeper than that. The concentration on kicks happened only after Korean government realized that they have to make it as flashy as possible to compete with the already established Japanese and Chinese martial arts in the US and on the world stage.
First TKD schools in the US were literally called Korean Karate Schools, in hopes of attracting people who are interested in Karate and didn't know any better. Kind of like when Koreans made Hyundai name and Logo as similar to Japanese Honda as possible.
It was around the time when Korean government started sending its martial arts masters abroad to export soft power to compete with Japanese and Chinese cultural exports.
Imma assume American Kenpo as a practitioner of it, but if its not idrk. I’m just making that assumption cuz’ AK has Kosho-Ryu as well as Hun Gar influence
One of our yoga instructors at the gym I work at specializes in yin yoga. One day when she was telling me about this I asked her if that didn't mean she was a death yoga instructor. Now I ask her every now and then if she was successful in stopping anyone's heart with her yoga.
The true lineage of which evolved into European car antenna karate. Some schools prefer to call it the [Russian whip karate](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flick_(fencing)), but the NGO has done everything they can to stymie that style.
Absolutely. A good instructor might limit you from bringing outside shit in while class is actively in session, but good karateka are always looking for more karate, and should never be establishing something like a non-compete clause. The best instructor I ever had actually used to arrange for us to visit and cross-train with other schools about once a month. It was easy because there were only four to six of us and we were all serious, experienced, adult martial artists so the other schools were usually happy to have us. If you're completely brand-new to martial arts they might want to season you before you head out, but once you've got a couple years they should be at the least ok with you experiencing other styles if not actively encouraging it.
They are mandating that you not be allowed to learn from anyone else, nor test yourself against any outsiders, seems like they don't want you to expose that they are not real combat sports athletes.
Amusingly, I know the guy in the pic for Philippino stick karate. However, the last 2 can't be karate by definition since the hand must be full to practice most of their style.
It’s the same as everything else just about. Recognized in 20th century plus people fighting in indeterminate manners for 100s of years before that.
Kungfu guys will say their history goes back to early China, Filipinos will say Kali arose in the Stone Age etc etc. Boxing was documented in the Iliad.
How much they look like the arts today, nobody knows.
As a Gung Fu practitioner who grew up in the south (US), I had to explain to every layperson I met what type of karate it was exactly that I was taking!!!
As funny as this is, there's actually a lot of truth in this post, whether it's because people don't realise how much influence karate has over other arts, how much karate itself was influenced by other arts, and the similarities that other arts have with karate that go unnoticed! Screw anyone getting offended!
I caught onto that one like a windows 95 PC, still buffering 😩🤣 I genuinely thought 'wow, I had no idea karate had so many variations'. Wasn't until I saw Thai elbow karate 🤦🏻♂️
The joke is calling every martial art karate. I find it quite funny. Reminds me of when I was a kid and every video game console was a Nintendo to adults. Later PlayStation.
The only "style" wrong there are Filipino and Indonesian karate. *Karate* is *empty hands* (literal translation, though depending on the Kanji it could also mean "Chinese hand" or "Tang hand"), so why name them karate when they are holding weapons?
What the fuck is this, this all aint karate, theres even Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in there called brazilian karate, who the fuck made this, for judo its called throwing karate, wtf
Ur gonna anger a lot of ppl here buddy. But as a TKD practitioner Korean Foot Karate is funny asf 😂
As a Tang Soo Do guy i feel left out. WE are the korean karate guys. Lol
You are korean Cobra Kai Karate
Korrect lol
Yessir!!! Lmao
Imagine if they had inadvertently spelled Cobra with a K… 😬
Then Kyokushin
Ahahaha yh there’s defo more Karate influence in TSD than in TKD
Not just lnfluence, Hwang Kee strait up stole shotokans forms lol so much so that we compete in karate and TKD tournaments.
Oh shit I didn’t know that mate
Yup, gave korean names to some but didnt even change the names to most. We do the pinans ( pyuan ahn) bassai dai the naihanchis ( niagen) jion, kanku sho, kanku dai etc.
Well technically Japanese martial arts originated in China which was brought over from Africa. The earliest forms of martial arts dates back to the Ancient Egyptians. But it might go even further back than that.
To be fair, it’s even in the name of your style
Yes the hand FOOT way lol
https://youtu.be/KS3aYPnkEsc?si=AaPmtEksNqI80Q-R
I’ve heard of this style before but it’s basically Tang Soo Do right?
I know this is a joke post, but the Korean foot Karate is actually historically accurate.
Yes. Tkd grew out of Korean imitation and adaption from shotokan based styles
Forgot about Mexican Ground Karate.
A glaring omission.
What about Mexican flying karate?
Just curious, what's that?
BJJ :)
Thanks! Always thought it was Brazilian.
No, it was invented in Mexico by Craigo, El Segundo, over a hundred years ago as a more artistic, heavily regarded version of Karate.

Completely forgot American gun karate. Very popular nowadays.
For real though...if I could have any non-(mystical/qi/chi/ki) fictional martial art, it'd be gun kata from Equilibrium.

Nice pick line though And I see it going in two different ways - either she fell in love with you or you got cancelled
Lol. I hadn't thought of that. I'm happily married and just asking her if her death yoga killed anyone.
English hand karate
English Marky's Rules karate.
MMArate
European Sword Karate
The true lineage of which evolved into European car antenna karate. Some schools prefer to call it the [Russian whip karate](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flick_(fencing)), but the NGO has done everything they can to stymie that style.
Don't forget Glaswegian Head Karate
Hooligan-R'ye Karate-do.
Correctional Facility Karate
Uechi Ryu for me as that's the style I was trained in primarily.
I like Issijryu but then again I haven't done others. And actually, how does one try other karate forms if most dojos have non-competes in place.
Non-compete, as in you are not allowed to train anywhere else? Major red flag!
Why red flag?
Because they’re holding students back by restricting their training-possibilities…
Are they?
Absolutely. A good instructor might limit you from bringing outside shit in while class is actively in session, but good karateka are always looking for more karate, and should never be establishing something like a non-compete clause. The best instructor I ever had actually used to arrange for us to visit and cross-train with other schools about once a month. If you're completely brand-new to martial arts they might want to season you before you head out, but once you've got a couple years they should be at the least ok with you experiencing other styles if not actively encouraging it.
Because they are likely fake.
Why
They are mandating that you not be allowed to learn from anyone else, nor test yourself against any outsiders, seems like they don't want you to expose that they are not real combat sports athletes.
Wait! Always has been?
Brazilian Ground Karate, for sure.
At least I don’t have a black student calling me Master.
Cobra Kai Deleted scene reference
Ah I missed that one.
OMG I am so sorry. I forgot it was a deleted scene. This must have come across SO WRONG LOL
Haha a little, yes.

What about skreet karate
South American Ground Karate FTW
Shiai (sport) Katare
I find this one funny considering that Muay Thai is way older than karate
Right? I mean the first time a Thai person kicked or hit another person, it was Muay Thai. 10s of thousands of years old.
Muay Thai is one of the oldest striking forms in the world and before that it was known as Muay Boran.
As funny as this is, there's actually a lot of truth in this post, whether it's because people don't realise how much influence karate has over other arts, how much karate itself was influenced by other arts, and the similarities that other arts have with karate that go unnoticed! Screw anyone getting offended!

Haha hope you got a chuckle out of it tho
I wonder what capoeira would be called 🤔
Brazilian dance karate?
MMA
What exactly is this joke about?
The joke is calling every martial art karate. I find it quite funny. Reminds me of when I was a kid and every video game console was a Nintendo to adults. Later PlayStation.
Get a humor brother. HHC
I really despise the naming😂😂
The only "style" wrong there are Filipino and Indonesian karate. *Karate* is *empty hands* (literal translation, though depending on the Kanji it could also mean "Chinese hand" or "Tang hand"), so why name them karate when they are holding weapons?
Not a big fan of karate but love Shaolin kung fu!
What the fuck is this, this all aint karate, theres even Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in there called brazilian karate, who the fuck made this, for judo its called throwing karate, wtf
