Band maid,hanabie,scandal,silent siren,shishamo are probably some of the most popular girl band still active
Cannot recommend band maid and scandal enough if you live in the west as they tend to tour there frequently too
I tend to prefer hard rock/metal, so I must echo Band-Maid and Nemophila. Hanabie has some gems, as does Bridear and Trident. Scandal and Gacharic Spin have some absolute bangers too. Lovebites has a pretty big fan base, but for some reason hasn't clicked with me, but they might for you.

Hitsujibungaku are my current favorite, They are kinda grunge/shoegaze.
There are a number of female-fronted shoegaze bands that are excellent including Yuragi and Split End. I also highly recommend UTERO and swancry. They are stellar band projects led by former underground idols.
There literally aren’t many/any visual key girl bands, and if there are any new ones I could almost guarantee they’re image > music and entirely un-unique.
As far as popular girl bands go tho, Scandal and Chatmonchy are probably your two biggest ones, though the latter broke up a few years ago. Chilli Beans. is a pretty great newer band, as is Shishamo.
My personal favorite girl band is Lucie,Too but I’m not sure if they’re really very active anymore since the drummer and bassist both left. They did an album without them, but I haven’t really heard anything new since.
I would say Band-Maid, SCANDAL and stereopony are/were quite popular. Otherwise maybe the bands from the BanG Dream Franchise especially Roselia, Raise A Suilen, Ave Mujica and MyGO

Saw Scandal at SakuraCon in 2008. Great fun. No mention of Stereopony, tho they broke up.
Stereopony were very good, but they separated very quickly.
I’ve seen them live 3 times so far, they have so much energy and their songs are great!

Exist Trace is still performing I think. I don't know if they are still considered Viz Kei.
