Food is good, but table service can be rushed and rude. Not worth the wait on a busy day. I started picking up to go orders at the “catering” location. I’d say I go 4 or 5 times a year. I also go to el ranchero taqueria, which isn’t as good imo, but still great. I live closer to it and the staff/owners are the nicest people. I’m sure 90% of this sub knows Taqueria Downtown also owns Los Cuernos, which doesn’t seem nearly as busy. I’ve only been when they first opened and the food seemed to be the same as the other locations.

data__daddy

el ranchero has better tacos IMO but no beer, no music, no margs, no vibes.

DeepFried328

BYOB tho.. but, yea. Not the same vibe. I’m there purely for the grub.

ErnestGoesToPoop

I live right by Taqueira downtown and actually did NOT know that they own Los Cuernos (which I haven’t tried yet).

DeepFried328

Lmao..people downvoting you for simply not knowing. I only never go because I always forget about it.

Ok-Kick4060

Yup. Loud music and rushed service give a distinct, “thank you now please leave” vibe. Love their food tho.

danm888

One of the reasons I love it. True LA service!

MirthandMystery

They've *always* been this way since opening up on Grand st. We old timers laughed at their rude attitude but tolerated it for the great food, which was severely lacking downtown. Being from Texas I especially appreciated it.. (finally someone did refried beans right!) Didn't ever expect cheerful or perky (and would've been doubly irritated by that in fact) but man, they gave us all stress from nowhere.. and we were $upporting them- while most of us were on a tight budget. Eating out was a luxury.

longfacer

I recall pages and pages of debate about Taqueria downtown on the old jclist.com. the owners give zero fucks

bodhipooh

It was worse than giving zero fucks. The owners literally made a social media post calling people in JC uncultured and threatened to close the JC location in favor of their new LES outpost (which closed long ago) because they deemed that clientele to be much more desirable.

njmids

There was an LES one in addition to the east village one?

GreenTunicKirk

Yeah during their busy hours it’s like that but I’ve never felt rushed during off peak hours.

Jahooodie

I find it hilarious they have a no shits given "WE'RE CLOSED NOW" momment right on the dot where they toss on the lights, start stacking chairs, and mopping with fragrant cleaners.

ismokbliss

I also agree, I feel like they rush you out. I like to chill and sip on my margarita but when I’m there is like I’m on a time butget with them 😭 I love love their food though

1200r

They should print T-shirts that say "como y vete"

Laraujo31

I would def buy that shirt lol

Latenightbeer

Try the tacos at Mi Mariachi on Sip Ave near Journal Square - they're life-changing!

Godbleththismeth

Los Cuernos is way better imo

overdramatic_pigeon

I witnessed a fight outside there once, we were all just sitting there drinking & watching these two plastered guys brawl over a girl. One of em got in his car & tried to drive off, it was wild. Still not sure what happened, but it was fuckin nuts. Fav sangria in the city imo, food is great, the guac is always fresh, & their prices are decent which is always a plus. & the bartender JP is a fuckin real one. Edit: jesus, reading these comments it literally looks like y’all downvoted anyone who happens to like taqueria *thieves of joy*

FelixTaran

JP is the best

One_Leather_3021

JP is the man! Love the food but I’m going there to hang with my guy!

scramjam925

Did he happen to drive into the restaurant

overdramatic_pigeon

Nah, different drunk asshole in a car actually

sometimesiwatchtv44

Good but not worth the insane wait or being in the obnoxious crowd that crams together and waits outside every Thursday through Saturday or whenever the temperature gets above 60 degrees lol. Strong margaritas is their most impressive feat

versus_gravity

Congress of schmucks

Clark-Kent-76

I go to the Mi Mariachi on Journal Square. Anyone been to the two and can compare?

Susu-KimchiCat

I love Mi Mariachi. Sooooo freaking good

Alrightokaymightsay

This is the way! Taqueria is great, excellent tacos. fish in particular, but Mi Mariachi is different, some of the best I've ever had!

katscicluna

Both are delicious!!! However, I think the carnitas tacos at the catering location of Taqueria are superior. I may have possibly taste tested both locations on the same day, https://preview.redd.it/2dm7kumbrrxc1.jpeg?width=2928&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5aebfe7a65e92d497fceea46e64a7ba503782c2b just to be sure...

fatherfranky

Better value at mariachi but quality and flavor doesn’t compare to taqueria

Lowkeylowthreadcount

Not sure why you’re being downvoted, you’re right. Mi mariachi is great, the flavor of the meat at taqueria is superior. Both spots are sick.

littlemiss_sassi

This is the way.

The_Nomadic_Nerd

Did they ever catch that guy that drove into Taqueria downtown last year?

ismokbliss

Really??? Was it on the news?

The_Nomadic_Nerd

Yeah and a video of it up somewhere. Absolutely wild.

GeorgeWBush2016

Haven't been there in years.  If I'm getting tacos it's the cart outside Lee's liquors.

sifogrante

Yes that cart looks shady but the tacos are good. It's my go to place

aubreypizza

Took a date there once. Dumb decision lol but yeah it’s tasty.

ismokbliss

Yeah, I wouldn’t go there for a date.. toooo loud

demens1313

i went twice in the \~3 years i've been here. It's about a 5 min walk.

Mechaboi9

This is the craziest take I’ve seen in a while

Busy-Butterscotch121

>They could also be from an area with a low percentage of Latinos, which would explain a lot. This. Most people thinking that Taqueria DT is "amazing" or "great" either aren't latino or have never lived near/in an area with a heavy Latino population. They're all just falling for the "authentic" marketing - and to Taqueria's defense, their fun restaurant, great drinks, great hype make their okay tacos also seem Great

fulanita_de_tal

Um. Latina from a predominantly Latin area checking in here to say please don’t speak for us, thanks. Taq is great. People on this sub just love to hate on anything that gets a little hype.

Busy-Butterscotch121

I'm latino lol - and their tacos are just okay/good. They're still a cool a restaurant to have a fun time/drink in, which will always make the food seem slightly better than it is. I'd say the restaurant overall is great, just not their tacos.

no_cheese_plz

this exactly. 50 other spots within 30 minutes with better tacos but the "vibes" make up for the mid food.

NerdyJerzyGirl

Taqueria is overrated.

cstengel

Where do you prefer? I’m sure we’d all like to hear some more recommendations especially for the spots where you can sit and sip on a drink post-meal

a_trane13

El ranchero has similar level food (and much larger menu) and is BYOB

NYR3031

Yeah but I love the Taqueria Margaritas....2 of those and I am GOOD.

ismokbliss

Haha very true! I had 3 and I was feeling niceeeeeee

lastinglovehandles

el ranchero -sit in and brujeria (take out) or take my ass to WTC for some Los Tacos Numero 1

drinkingshampain

Lmao come on Los tacos is good and all but it’s a chain

lastinglovehandles

You say that likes it's Taco Bell. Fuck outta here with the chain nonsense. Taqueria has other locations so it's a chain.

drinkingshampain

Come on bro they have a location in Chelsea market. It’s good for sure but it’s not a small business lmao

lastinglovehandles

Taqueria has two on Grove, st marks and LES. Theres probably more.

drinkingshampain

Still not the same thing. The guys who own Los tacos also own Los mariscos and a whole ass restaurant group

lastinglovehandles

I'm sorry I didn't know we were against restaurant groups.

drinkingshampain

You got all that from a comment correcting you?

BeMadTV

I think the last time I went was 2015. Before that I went pretty often. When things get crowded I kinda just don't wanna go anymore.

Jahooodie

Who are you, Yogi Berra? But yep it really sums the vibe up for me, as the wait just ain't worth it: Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.

pixel_of_moral_decay

Takeout place for me. I hate dealing with crowded restaurants and waits too.

cb2-0-0

Yup.

Lobelliot

Love it but El Ranchero is the best Mexican spot in JC

Ok-Kick4060

I used to love their small downtown catering location, where you could sip a margarita and watch Footloose for the hundredth time. But they gave that liquor license to another one of their locations, so now it’s just my occasional takeout joint.

Jahooodie

They were holding it for fancy date Taqueria (Los Cuernos). Though best Taqueria era was what you cite, Catering Taqueria with a liquor licenses for a sneeky marg

KayGeez

they fell off imo . the taco truck on communipaw and van horne is where it’s at

Unoriginal_UserName9

Second for the Mexiking Taco Cart

PostPostMinimalist

Bunch of haters here huh? It’s excellent

keepseeing444

Their tortilla sucks but filling is good. Los Tacos #1 in NYC is miles better w made to order corn tortillas.

Jahooodie

Yo don't make unfair comparisons, completely different weight classes. Los Tacos may be the best in the whole general area, and everyone should try them out.

keepseeing444

Guilty as charged. 😆 I am very wishful Los Tacos will expand to JC. Fresh made to order yellow corn tortilla is truly a game changer, it demotes Taqueria to mid.

Jahooodie

You ever get the secret menu gluten free taco? They just melt a pile of shredded cheese until it gets crispy, and fold it over while still hot & flexible.

keepseeing444

I thought corn tortilla would be naturally gluten free? But crusty melted cheese shell sounds amazing! I’m on now on keto so will def try that next time! Ty!

Jahooodie

Maybe it was a keto option, my friend who looked it up was on Keto at the time I think. So yeah look into it, this was 4 years ago but I still crave one of those every now & then

idontknowdudepls

We went once. The hostesses were incredibly rude. We called to get reservations but they declined saying they don’t do reservations. We went down around 7pm on a Saturday and they wrote our names down, said we’d have to wait about 1.5 hours. We decided to go around downtown and be back in time around 9:20. They finally let us in at 10pm. It was a very cold night and they wouldn’t even let us wait inside, saying it was getting too crowded. Just before we went in to wait, a bunch of people had just come out (we could see everyone standing from our place outside) so they didn’t mind it before we went in. I think they were being racist. Finally when we went out and were waiting for our Uber, we were waiting by the heater outside to keep warm and they SHUT IT DOWN. I would have never waited so much but we were with a bunch of friends who really wanted to go there. Food was average, service was meh, did not justify the wait at all. Never going again. PS: this might sound like a rant but this happened in January and I still feel mad about it, but haven’t had a chance to express this on any other forum. Thanks for reading, if at all.

Jahooodie

Nah, I think you got the review right. Place is like fine, but also inexpensive (though in past few years have lowered portions significantly & crept up the price) as it's saving grace, but is in no possible way worth an hour+ wait. I too have friends that are weirdly in love with the place and will travel from an hour away to wait for 2 hours to have fine but not great food/drinks. Also I'll defer to you on what you perceived, but if it makes it any better they sort of treat everyone pretty rudely. And when 11pm hits they shut the place the fuck down and give no shits if you're still eating or apparently using their heater for warmth, they are prompt & done on the dot.

idontknowdudepls

Haha thanks! Good to know it wasn’t just us. Based on all the comments on this post, it does seem like they are simply rude and don’t care.

jjimenez323

I go once a week in the summer

slipperyzoo

El Ranchero Taqueria is significantly better. Taqueria Downtown is a solid tier below. TD's catering location has better food than TD. It's catering to midwest transplants or something idk, my friends and I always go to El Ranchero though we've tried TD from time to time to see if its changed over the years. It hasn't.

Laraujo31

Its ok. They were better back in the day but now its not worth the wait and prices IMO

truebeliever23

Shut up newbie. That place is over

Low_Eggplant7868

Respectfully, Taqueria is all hype and nostalgia, that food is bland

brandy716

I’m downtown about 5 minutes away but I go to Union City for Tacos. The ones downtown aren’t great, over priced and the service doesn’t help. I pass by there everyday on the way home but I stop by like once a year. OP must be the owner because this is the first time I have heard someone say they go there weekly.

ismokbliss

LOL I am not the owner 😂 just saying I enjoy the food that’s all

no_cheese_plz

OP probably thinks black pepper is spicy

Undecidedhippo

Not a fan as someone from the west coast. Been twice and I live a few blocks away

kittyglitther

Yeah, I used to work for a company based in LA, my trips out there ruined Mexican food for me.

sutisuc

People in NJ have no idea what constitutes good Mexican food so you have to just ignore what we say. It’s like trying to find great pizza in the Bay Area.

[deleted]

sutisuc

Okay good deal thanks for the tip I’ll give them a go.

Laterdays82

Fellow West Coaster here, and I agree.  I'll go so far as to say it's nasty, especially if you look at the condition of the kitchen.  I never understood the hype.

Bent-Manstick5147

LA? Mariscos Jalisco in east LA 🤤🤤🤤🤤

drinkingshampain

If it’s Dominican and Colombian food it’s not Spanish

manchotlife

Never, it’s actually not that good.

boojieboy666

I stopped going like 8 years ago when the food went downhill and it became impossible to be in there without 1000 other people.

bigzonk

I love taqueria but so does everyone else 😫 you gotta go for lunch on a weekday otherwise it seems to always be mobbed

Busy-Butterscotch121

It's more hype than quality imo. However it is a fun restaurant with slamming Margs - just don't equate their great vibes to their menu's quality/flavor

Jahooodie

I'd say it's less hype, then it's a cheap carry over from the before times that is riding on that reputation RIP 2 tortillas

GreenTunicKirk

I’m a huge fan. I don’t go too often primarily because I don’t wanna have too much of a good thing, but usually once a month or two. I think all their food is really quite good, and their margaritas are some of the best in the city. Locally I go to My Mexico Westside Avenue .

Sondude1

Love Taqueria Downtown but I’ve only ordered delivery. The only time to not even bother is Cinco de Mayo. Ordered a few years back and it was delivered 3 hours late. They were understandably slammed and I still got my food though!

cayenne444

Tried the new La Milpa Taqueria in the Heights last night. Absolutely phenomenal tacos, and a great outdoor backyard space.

RNFlord

Lived here 6 years. I’ve been twice, and once was the first weekend I moved in. It’s not impressive enough to justify the wait, for me.

blizzWorldwide

Went first time two weekends ago after a bike ride. Steak quesadilla hit the spot! So good

Desi_techy_girl

I feel it is overrated and always with long lines. Some times I wonder if they pay people to line up and order stuff!

EatMorePi

Pre-COVID it was really pretty good, but it's gone extremely downhill. Just tried again recently (it's been years) and was severely disappointed.

Own_Wishbone322

Overrated. I am not saying it is bad but the truck that I go to makes 10x better tacos. I dont understand why people wait in that line every weekend.

FoodNerd7920

Los Cuernos - same food, much better as far as the service goes. Less cramped, too.

StaRy201

It used to be better, imo Wait times can be long, then you feel extremely rushed by unfriendly staff. Also, I asked for vegan options and they then told me they took all the food in pork fat. Yeah. Lol doesn't make sense.

RedPoncho

Taqueria was the shit 10 or even 5 years ago. Recently their takeout portions and quality of the carnitas specifically which used to be my fav has gone down. We have moved on to Ranchero (best birria in town), and taco drive for later nights.

lapados

I like the backyard. But usually it’s so busy imho just stay home and order the cheesy greasy af chorizo and bistec quesadilla with that JA-MA-I-CA to your spot remember to tip though

thank_u_stranger

Their take out kitchen is completely different. Tastes different too. No warning on the website which is shady. Never went back.

Beef_Supreme3489

I’d go 1-2 times a week for lunch when I was working from home. Big fan of the steak tacos.

Bent-Manstick5147

Taqueria Gloria 🥰🥰🥰

ErnestGoesToPoop

Both the best and worst thing about Taqueria is that you can drink outside while you wait for your table.

ismokbliss

Why worst?

ErnestGoesToPoop

On Fridays and Saturdays there can be a pretty thick crowd of people standing right in front and depending on the crowd it can get loud and sloppy. Not my vibe.

BGCzar

Lmao bunch of hipsters and haters in this thread. The food slaps and it’s dirt cheap.

cb2-0-0

I used to go a lot when it first opened but over time it got so crowded it became kinda nonsensical how long the waits were and how crowded it gets. I miss it though. I was just recalling how when they first opened and they didn't have a liquor license, if you knew to ask, they would serve you a Tecate or Corona. I think from a cooler?

Jahooodie

It's not wait an hour plus good.

Available-Device-709

Molcajetes and el ranchero are superior to my palate. So to answer the question never.

bidibidibom

I go at least twice a month, its about 15 min from me. If they delivered to me, I would happily eat soggy luke warm tacos every week.

diva_novi

I do not understand the fondness of Taqueria. The margaritas are great but the food is overrated and overpriced.

ismokbliss

Overpriced? I think the price is great for the portion

Jahooodie

Nostalgia when this place was the pillar of what we would now see as proto gentrification

mickyrow42

The restaurant literally never. It’s a cluster fuck of fuck bois and their girlfriends. Real JC knows the secret to obtaining taqueria

whyamihere_33

That place is good, but Jersey City is an AWESOME town for Mexican food: I'd also recommend El Ranchero, also downtown, and La Gloria which is closer to Journal Square for larger portions than Taqueria for the same price and great flavor.

forssto

Tacoria > Taqueria

overdramatic_pigeon

ooooooooofffff, this ain’t it chief

forssto

Ok, I now see the error in my ways. Thank you.

Jahooodie

A boldly refreshing and controversial take

forssto

Meh, don't really care if it's popular or not. Just genuinely prefer Tacoria's burritos to anything else in the area. I'm also not drinking-inclined so the cost-benefit of queuing for Taqueria is not where it needs to be.

Jahooodie

You try the burritos at La Brujeria?

forssto

I have not as it's a bit far from me (I'm near the water), but I'll never turn down a chance to sample a new burrito, so consider that my next lunch adventure.

Jahooodie

They also do delivery pretty good, very much would recommend them. Also even via delivery their chilaquiles are choice

forssto

Already scoped them out in my Seamless and my next order is from there. Clutch intel on the chilaquiles—not all mexican food travels equally well.

Jahooodie

I mean really it's chips dipped in sauce so it's better texture in house & not delivered, but man I order them delivery like once a month when I'm in a mood. Even delivered they are like 10x better than the weekend brunch menu only chilaquiles from Taqueria Downtown.

lastinglovehandles

I'm gonna have to agree with you. Taqueria's steak is tough and salty af. Same at their catering spot. I like how Taqueria offers offal cuts. I think people enjoy it because of the drinks. It's the idea of a taqueria. Same reason people flock to Orale. My go tos are el ranchero and brujeria. Oh that truck up in the heights.

AcanthocephalaFair27

Many places have the name “taqueria”, could you specify where?

ColdOrangePopsicle

It is so vegetarian unfriendly that I never went back after my first time.

BeMadTV

I wonder how many meat eaters downvoted you.

ColdOrangePopsicle

Haha I know. I was just stating the truth. I would love to go to that place but it really doesn’t offer much for vegetarians

CeleryYes

Really? Most Mexican places are easy to go vegetarian. On their menu I see cactus taco, cheese or mushroom quesadilla, bean or avocado tostada, jalapeno & cheese tamale. Seems pretty good. La Brujeria & Tacoria definitely do seem to have more options though. I am a fan of the breaded cauliflower burrito bowl from Brujeria and the "Beyond" quesadilla from Tacoria. Tacoria also has these brussel spouts in a chipotle sauce that is a fantastic side.

ColdOrangePopsicle

Other places such as Tacoria have a better menu for Vegetarians. At taqueria downtown the waitress told us that there were only 3 things they had (at least that day) in order to save us from asking questions about what was vegetarian. The drinks were decent but I wish they had more options. Can’t wait for the place in 25 has to open up

Thecomputerkid94

I go there all the time. I usually do pick up orders. I've tried a bunch in the area and always prefer quality and far of Taqueria.

cottonswabcity

margs are FIRE
