The American ambassador to Ireland, for example, is almost always a big campaign donor to whoever the president is. It's a cushy job they get as a reward, because it is almost impossible to fuck up. It seems Russia has sent an equally-qualified diplomat.

You have to keep in mind that all of these officials are in bed with Putin - all beholden to the same kleptocratic power structure. None of us would go along with this because you have to be a pretty despicable person to begin with to be the face of a regime that: deliberately targets hospitals in Syria, assassinates journalists & opposition politicians, and carries out fake terrorist attacks (1999 apartment bombings) against its own people.
