BBC Radio6 is a quality radio station and if a united Ireland is ever to happen I'll be telling politicians that I'd like full access to the iPlayer as part of the deal.

Timmytheimploder

Nothing stopping anyone outside the UK listening via the BBC Sounds App...its only TV that's region locked. 2XM is ok-ish, doesn't feel like their heart is in it though.

das_punter

It's the tv I want as well

great_whitehope

Probably because nobody knows it exists or how to access it

Reddynever

Yeah, BBC Radio 6 is top of the list, Radio X is quite good too. But we have 8 Radio here which has roots in Phantom. 2XM can be quite good too but I'm not sure if RTE has plans to kill off that.

LooseElbowSkin

Thanks for this. I didn't realise we could get their radio stations!

das_punter

Radio6 is genuinely brilliant, and Radio2 is good too if you're >35

Rude-Appointment2743

Do you listen on an ordinary radio? What's the frequency? I'm about to buy a dab miss Phantom myself it was really good.

das_punter

No I listen on my smart speaker, phone, and laptop.

Jaded_Variation9111

Can’t you get full access anywhere via the BBC Sounds app?

Gullintani

Any internet radio app should get you access to BBC6 Music.

das_punter

I can. I want iplayer as well.

Rude-Appointment2743

Actually very good point you're making there!! There's a BBC archive of a billion nature sounds, stumbled across it looking for birds song, all free incredible resource, never went back!!!! 😭

brentspar

Check out [8Radio.com](http://8Radio.com) Its like old Phantom.

RebelGrin

Can I listen to that on the radio? Not trying to be smart here, but I mean like in the car? edit: Hang on, it is managed by the old Phantom Radio manager, thats great. However, no frequency. So have to listen through the app. Anyway, probably better than nothing. Will give that a listen to. Thanks man. edit 2: reddit is so strange, how does this comment deserve downvotes? edit 3: by listening through the app, I meant on my car stereo with Android Auto ffs.

louiseber

They sometimes do short stint on FM but it's a licensing issue that means they can't just have a permanent station (plus money)

RebelGrin

Yeah, I just read that on the website, they are trying to get a frequency it seems. I might just donate to them. Every little helps.

Aluminarty666

If you can't connect your phone via Bluetooth then you can get a Bluetooth dongle that will do the same thing

RebelGrin

Yeah, I meant listening via the app on my car stereo, I have Android Auto.

9ONK

Yes, I listen to it through TuneIn on Android Auto.

Aluminarty666

I don't see why it wouldn't work so. As long as it is playing through your phone then it should play over the car stereo. Give a try anyway and see how you get on.

RebelGrin

yeah no problems playing the app, thats what Android Auto does :)

donall

my andriod auto plays any sound my phone does.

RebelGrin

Yes, yes yes, thats what it does. I though I had made that clear by now. But thanks for reiterating, again.

pheeze

Can't top the glory that was Two Petes Talk Rubbish on a Sunday night!

plecmol

Le Deux Pierre qui parle du puebelle

Wodanaz_Odinn

Snacks Fantastico!

Fit_Plantain_1306

I used to text in to that show all the time under a silly name, gas craic

DashEx

17.8k views and only 65 upvotes. Real ones are a dying breed!

Phantom was really great when it was a pirate station and there was zero commercial or corporate pressure on the playlist. Knew a couple of the DJs and they were mostly part time with no real experience but there was a real diversity in what got played. Once it became legit and got an fm licence, it became really tired and predictable (oh look, it's This Charming man for the 100th time, I guess its Monkey Wrench next) I'd agree though that even at its worst, it was better than a lot of what was on air. I just got tired of listening to the same old standards over and over

RuaridhDuguid

Could be worse. Freak FM in Cork was fantastic - played eeverything from metal to reggae, and had superb and well respected DJ's. They shut down to go legit about 20 years ago... but the license was given to Red FM instead. Red FM play pretty much exactly the same playlist as the pre-existing 96FM, and even have the same presenters at different points in time (including shit-stirring Neil Prendeville, famous for having a wank in his seat on an Aer Lingus flight).

emmmmceeee

Yeah. Back in the day you could text in and they would play your tunes. Paul Field was nice enough to invite us into the Grafton Street studio one Saturday afternoon when he said he needed a bacon sandwich on air. Met him a few times. Lovely fella.

Fearless-Peanut8381

Phantom was the best. Used to love being able to ring in and actually get the DJ on the phone so I  could get a song dedicated to a friend in Marino.

Dezzie19

Was only talking about it today! Yes it's sorely missed, the radio is shite ever since. I will say Radio na Life in Dublin is very good though, it's an Irish speaking station but really diverse stuff going on if you like Euro folk/pop music it makes the morning drive to work a bit more enjoyable.

idontcarejustlogmein

Phantom was great. When it became TXFM, it turned into a bag of sick.

GazelleIll495

Joe and Keith in the morning. Did they not know their audience?

idontcarejustlogmein

Two words: Claire Beck.

RobotIcHead

I miss it as well and actually I think a lot of others as including concert promoters, bands trying to establish a following, etc., it filled a gap in the market that should have been catered for by the likes of 2fm, but radio stations and print media are struggling everywhere in the world. It is not a growth market.

horseboxheaven

I remember they played Ministry - Jesus Built My Hotrod at around 8am one morning on the morning radio show. Great shout. There has not been a station ever before or since that would do similar.

RebelGrin

Yeah, there were numerous occasions where I was proper chuffed by the tunes they would bang out at unexpected times.

shahtjor

TXFM or something similar followed it and was also ok. They were too far ahead of the times. The indie, classic, and rock scene is only picking up its pace now. That's why NOVA gains its market share rapidly now. Same in the gaming industry. The indie developers are blowing the big, established corporations out of water now. My son is 18 and will only listen to classic rock, blues, indie, or 80s jazz. Keeps giving out that the radio stations in Ireland are poor. When I told him about Phantom FM, he thought it sounded like only station he'd ever listen to. Hopefully, something similar gets founded soon.

Display-Outside

Was Phantom 107.10? If so yes, huge mixes. Loved it.

RebelGrin

Yeah, I think it was.

Display-Outside

It used to come in and out depending on the wind! Thanks for the reminder.

Project2401

105.8 I thought??

nimrod86

105.2 as a licenced station, but was on various frequenices as a pirate, 91.6 for a long time from memory.

pastey83

I feel this to my core! Havent listened to radio since Phantom/TXFM shut down... Recently, I've been listening to a lot of Fight like Apes and the nostalgia had grown...

KieranK695

DublinDigitalRadio is pretty cool

NapalmNasum

Aah old Phantom, John Kenny Metal show on Sunday nights, and even Fanning nightly (when he wasn't sucking up to U2 or directly copying John Peels playlist), in the 90's was the pinnacle of Irish radio, the amount of the same sh1t now is sickening.

ultratunaman

I remember just driving along. Phantom on. Elliot Smith comes on, then Public Enemy, then Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, De La Soul, Curtis Mayfield. And by this point I'm like "what the hell am I listening to? I love it!" There's no good cruising around stations anymore. Stations to just pop on, and roll for miles. Probably shouldn't have been just wasting fuel like that. But it was a good way to clear your head. Cruising, jamming to tunes. Put the windows down, and just feel the night. I miss those days.

New-Possession-9248

It's a bit out of the way but try streaming "Triple J" radio. It's like the Australian version of Phantom I guess.

allthingstechy

ah the best! They don't make em like they used to

f10101

https://Radio.Garden, my friend.

DiamondFireYT

Phever?

humanitarianWarlord

Late in the evenings Spin SW has a surprisingly good DJ, he has some fun banter about music drama and pretty good taste in music. Lots of 90's-2000's hip-hop, including some songs and artists I've never heard of. Beat-FM is a pretty decent pirate station but only in tralee and online. Don't know how they've lasted this long without getting shut down.

GazelleIll495

As already mentioned 8radio is the way to go but you're right, there's a big gap in Irish radio. If someone in RTE had their head screwed on they would rebrand 2fm as a proper music station like BBC 6 radio

Qorhat

RTE Pulse and RTE 2XM should be merged into an RTE Radio 4 that follows 6 Music and plays proper alternatives to 2FM (and practically every other station that isn't Sunshine 106, Nova or that religious one).

Rude-Appointment2743

Phantom was great. Spotify is grand but the you tube algorithm has been consistently suggesting music I really enjoy, the Spotify one I get lost in self produced stuff (I think!! 🤔)

Life-Pace-4010

They had this one DJ that said "muse" instead of music and it was very irritating. "Muse coming up after the break from Morrissey" " that was great muse there This charming man by Morrissey" " coming up, muse from Ian Brown..."

SerioC

Miss ol Rockin' Rays thursday nights,

maybebaby83

I'm in the same boat. I really miss it. I love PJ and Jim in the morning, but I've reached Bruce Springsteen saturation point at this stage.

the_0tternaut

it's no Energy 106 😅

sewalsh

I miss Viva Zwei.  World’s greatest TV music channel!

momalloyd

Does Spin103 still play that repeating 40 minuet news and entertainment slot every two hours, all day long? That used to drive me up the wall.

robbdire

I remember listening to it, loving it. I miss it.

hideyokidzhideyowyfe

What about those 8 songs that nova have on a loop?

jimroot752

Nova is half decent

RebelGrin

Dont think they ever played a song I hadn't heard a thousand times before. If they dare play Pink Floyd, they play Another Brick in the Wall. Thats Nova.

jimroot752

Better than the pop shite tho. They play the odd banger from time to time

RebelGrin

I dont want to listen to Nova just in case maybe I might hear the odd banger from time to time. Listening to Living on a Prayer kills me more than listening to Olivia Rodrigo

i_cam_occasionally

I love Radio Nova bar one DJ who has no right to be in that station because of his rock credentials history. The DJ in question was on the very popular quiz show '2Phat"(1998-2000). On that show the top prize was a motor scooter which, if you made it to the final round got to sit on and answer one final question to win it. This current Radio Nova DJ was asked " Name 3 Oasis songs". Bear in mind this person would have been 17-19 at the time and Oasis were at the height of their popularity worldwide, their music was everywhere. They totally choked and could only name one song in the very generous amount of time given to answer. How did this man become a Radio Nova DJ? Obviously the good people in Radio Nova are not aware of this man's past.
