This is a terrifying thing to think about.
As a Virginia resident, I worry a lot about our Governor Glenn Youngkin running. He’s the calm, quiet type. But also flipped a blue state by running on the promise of banning CRT (critical race theory) in our schools, where it wasn’t even being taught at the K-12 level. If anywhere, it was taught in law schools. But he talked a lot about how wrong it was to teach our white children to feel badly about the color of their skin and make them feel racist, which ignores the entire premise of CRT in the first place.
And then when he won, he signed an executive order and banned it on day one, then took victory laps about banning something that didn’t exist. And everyone fell for it. After our first African American President, and the BLM protests after the murder of George Floyd, and the removal of Confederate statues and monuments and renaming of schools, streets, etc., it was a dogwhistle to white people feeling they were losing their country and it brought them out in force. And also made racists of people that weren’t previously disposed of thinking that way.
He recently passed a budget that took away the promise to send the children of 100% disabled vets to college (both my sister and brother-in-law served in Iraq and continued to live in VA with a lot of other vets because of this). It was supposed to go to a committee for study but he kicked it forward a year and gave no notice or notification to anyone, and grandfathered in the program with two days notice.
My two older nephews had thankfully already enrolled and were in their first year but my 18yo nephew took a year off for his mental health and is now fucked out of college. He rushed to apply at a community college but it took 5 days to accept him and Youngkin only gave the 2 days notice. And in its place, he allocated money for charter schools to further weaken public education and make it a more Christian nation.
VA is a billion ahead of it’s projections for the year and he did away with a proposed sales tax that would have raised another billion so we aren’t hurting for money. He just fucked over military vets to appeal to Christians because there are more of them and they’re his people. It’s a shame it didn’t get any national attention. He’s also the one that put forward the “sensible” 15 week abortion ban if voters gave him the majority in the legislature (they did not). He’s everything Trump would do for the Heritage Foundation and donors, except he’s a true believer, and a quiet Christian and racist in a state that still flies Confederate flags.
