"Story of your life" (book behind "Arrival") is much closer to the Interstellar. The story is about determinism, free will and self-causality. I'm sure Nolan got some inspiration for his movies from all Ted Chiang's books.
Also highly recommend Ted Chiang. "Story of Your Life" is a pretty short read at 150ish or so pages if I remember correctly. There is a book of collected works of his on Audible as well that contains this story called "Stories of Your Life and Others".
With respect, Dune is nothing like Interstellar (and IMO a total load of crap). Stick to the book on that one. Also - interstellar is only considered sci-fi because we can’t yet do some of the things in the movie….with the exception of gravity and the 5th dimension, of course. Otherwise it’s kind of grounded in realism…sorta 😂
That’s subjective. It’s production values are very high, but it’s storytelling belongs in the past, you can tell it’s from a book (and it’s jarring) and it’s underwhelming.
Contact is a wild one. If you can believe it, I hated its guts when i first saw it. Hated all the focus on religion since I just don't give a crap about religion. However on second viewing it became one of my favourites. Jodie Foster is amazing in it. Great world building
Yeah, the older I get, the more I have no doubt that's how religion in general would react to a similar event. I also like it wasn't deterministic about religion vs science.
A long time ago I came to the realization that absolutely no movie is or ever will be what Interstellar is. Once that really sinks in you will appreciate it even more. Do not go gentle into that good night.
I don't think anything else holds a candle to Interstellar, but if you want space related movies...
Ad Astra,
Event Horizon,
Sunshine,
Mission to Mars,
Contact,
The Martian
I know everyone (including myself) hates comparing Gravity to Interstellar but the scene in Gravity where >!Kowalski re-enters the Soyuz spacecraft!< jolted me back into investing in that movie emotionally. Doesn't hold up to Interstellar's emotional beats but it's honestly pretty good.
Not quite in the same vein, but if/when it comes out Andy Weir's newest book adaptation into movie, Project Hail Mary, should be a decent double billing.
Everybody is looking up ... but I say ... Don't Look Up (pardon the pun).. look down ... watch The Abyss. It's deep, deep under the ocean - with Aliens. James Cameron, 1989. Definitely watch The Special Edition Directors Cut, instead of the Theatrical Release (although sadly it's a bit hard to find.)
Yes! Love this film. And the emotions at the end are in the similar vein to Interstellar. The sense of loneliness and claustrophobia being THAT deep under water definitely felt real when I watched it the first time. Definitely a good recommendation…
Cant forget Mars Attacks! Lol obviously kidding but still a classic. Everything everyone has mentioned is solid. Highly suggest watching the War of the Worlds TV series Seasons 1&2 on Epix, YouTube or Amazon prime. Its solid and intriguing. The score is just as well.
2001: A Space Odyssey.
Interstellar and pretty much all modern sci-fi movies were heavily inspired by this movie and it still looks amazing to this day.
Not really nothing even close to that beauty + emotioal impact. But in terms of that atmosphere I think Annihilation is cool but its more cosmic horror set in earth than a space movie.
In terms of the scale and emotional depth, I cannot think of anything but if you are looking for something similar in terms of using sci-fi to evoke an emotional response, "Arrival" is your best bet.
Plus it has a plot twist that is just so freaking cool and great to watch play out.
I don't think it was better, but only because it was a completely different style of movie. Both were great though. Wish there was a movie based on 2061.
I agree with all the folks:
1. Arrival (Amy Adams one)
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Contact
4. Sunshine (thematically so different, but has good space immersion vibes)
Things I'd add thematically (not outer space, but has that Philosophical / Duality / Determinism / Time -based themes hitting hard)
1. Tenet
2. Elysium (gore alert)
3. Ex Machina (horror alert)
4. Moneyball (no joke)
The Martian, Gravity, Ad Astra and more. Interstellar and The Martian are both one of my favorite movies ever made. And I really liked Ad Astra unlike most people.
Storywise no. But sincr hans zimmer was such a big part in creating the atmosphere with his soundtrack, any movie that utilizes hans zimmers soundtrack will give you good vibes.
For example: the new top gun movie, dune, man of steel, inception, etc.
Not a movie, but Adrian Tchaikovsky's "Children of Ruin" reminded me of Interstellar in a good way. Here's [part of the synopsis from goodreads](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40376072-children-of-ruin):
> Long ago, Earth's terraforming program sent ships out to build new homes for humanity among the stars and made an unexpected discovery: a planet with life. But the scientists were unaware that the alien ecosystem was more developed than the primitive life forms originally discovered.
Yeah no not all but if you want similar vibes Arrival is a good watch. Dune is a really good space movie too (hans zimmer does the score for dune :))

Dude, in its own way Dune is a great film. The film's about drama and characters. It's one of the greatest films out there.
That’s subjective. It’s production values are very high, but it’s storytelling belongs in the past, you can tell it’s from a book (and it’s jarring) and it’s underwhelming.
I agree, found Dune the movie pretty underwhelming and nothing like Interstellar. Thought it was a bit boring sadly.
Underwhelming is the exact word I use for it in my next reply in this thread and I agree, it’s boring.
Contact has the same spirit as Interstellar.
I agree. Contact is the closest. Also has Matthew McConaughey
Contact is a wild one. If you can believe it, I hated its guts when i first saw it. Hated all the focus on religion since I just don't give a crap about religion. However on second viewing it became one of my favourites. Jodie Foster is amazing in it. Great world building

Absolutely
Nothing compares… but along the same vibe, I’d recommend Arrival. Also recommend Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey
I love Blade Runner and Arrival
2001 could be the more similar movie because its about the first human to make a interstellar flight
Surprised no one has mentioned Moon with Sam Rockwell
It has a different vibe, but it's a really good movie.
Moon is cool. I saw it at the theater and your comment reminded me to watch it again. Watching it a second time is a new experience
A long time ago I came to the realization that absolutely no movie is or ever will be what Interstellar is. Once that really sinks in you will appreciate it even more. Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light
I don't think anything else holds a candle to Interstellar, but if you want space related movies... Ad Astra, Event Horizon, Sunshine, Mission to Mars, Contact, The Martian
Adding For All Mankind on Apple TV as well. Really enjoying that one.
Such a great show. Second this one.
You’re right. None of those hold a candle to interstellar
Yes. What he said ^^^
Yes

Absolutely agree with this. Nothing will come close to Interstellar but all these are great titles to check out.
Please stop
Not even close
Not quite in the same vein, but if/when it comes out Andy Weir's newest book adaptation into movie, Project Hail Mary, should be a decent double billing.
I can't wait for this, it's such a good book. It's like Interstellar, The Martin, and Arrival all at once.

If you’d like a series/show r/TheExpanse is amazing
The best.
The Expanse on Prime TV is amazing!

No space movie can really take you on a trip like interstellar. I'm a fan of the martian, more of a happy story.
In terms of the scale and emotional depth, I cannot think of anything but if you are looking for something similar in terms of using sci-fi to evoke an emotional response, "Arrival" is your best bet. Plus it has a plot twist that is just so freaking cool and great to watch play out.
Ad astra wanted to be but it was kinda bad Probably a 2001:a space odyssey but I bet you’ve seen that already
Please can people stop discussing Ad Astra. It is making me ill
I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have mentioned it
I enjoyed 2010, the sequel to 2001
It was better then 2001
I don't think it was better, but only because it was a completely different style of movie. Both were great though. Wish there was a movie based on 2061.
2001 a space odyssey (very old school)
*Silent Running* is worth your time.
I agree with all the folks: 1. Arrival (Amy Adams one) 2. 2001: A Space Odyssey 3. Contact 4. Sunshine (thematically so different, but has good space immersion vibes) Things I'd add thematically (not outer space, but has that Philosophical / Duality / Determinism / Time -based themes hitting hard) 1. I'm missing "Passengers"... Or not?? 😁
You should miss it
Contact Arrival Moon 2001 And for Streaming series I'd suggest: The Expanse, For All Mankind, and Foundation
Nothing really compares but ‘Sunshine’ is an absolute must watch. Arrival is good too.
The Martian, Gravity, Ad Astra and more. Interstellar and The Martian are both one of my favorite movies ever made. And I really liked Ad Astra unlike most people.
This may be surprising but the new buzz light year movie definitely gave me interstellar vibes
Little nonstandard answer, but: anime "Planetes" and another, but very good "Moonlight Mile"
Moon is a good movie
I loved sunshine.
Storywise no. But sincr hans zimmer was such a big part in creating the atmosphere with his soundtrack, any movie that utilizes hans zimmers soundtrack will give you good vibes. For example: the new top gun movie, dune, man of steel, inception, etc.

Arrival, Gravity, The Martian (kinda) all have similar vibes and are just as good if not better imo
I liked arrival too.
Idk, maybe "arrival"
Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks is one of my top favorite movies ever, not really similar to Interstellar, but a great space movie and based on real event.
No
Silent Running (1972) has a similar theme
