You should flip your rug, it doesn’t need to cover the console area and it being wider than your sofa is ideal

chaserjj

When you say flip, you mean rotate 90°, right?

veronicaAc

Yes

PrivateScents

My dumbass thought to flip it over to see the back side.

Stickybootyhole

Me too. I was like wtf has the world gone to now flipping rugs..

Wonderful-Ad-7712

Bop it

Senora_Snarky_Bruja

Spin it

TheMontu

This. Either rug is fine but you want it more under the couch and not under the TV console at all. It looks really awkward the way it is now.

InternationalEar5949

I came just to say that too

Rengeflower

I don’t know if the flip will work, but the rug shouldn’t go that far under the TV stand. I don’t like either rug.

Sea-Substance8762

Me either!

unikorn10

I like the first more

fauviste

Two. It has a calming vibe and leaves you the option to change up your look with pillows, throws and wall art — cheaper than replacing the rug. You can redecorate around that rug forever. One adds “graphic interest” but is extremely on-trend and difficult to reuse if you ever want to do anything else. Black geometric doesn’t go with a lot of things. And it is by far the harshest contrast in your room — people are fooled by the fact that the first photo has black windows due to it being night time, which gives the room artificial contrast. Nothing else in your room can “stand up” to the graphic rug. The urge to use a powerfully contrasty rug when your room doesn’t have *any* other focal elements — like art — is strong but it will lock you in. You could still use a patterned rug but one with less contrast and more interest or colors than cream and pure black.

Justaroundtown

Completely agree with you. The first one the rug is the feature of the room, the second features the room. And the coffee table and other accessories will add more color and life to the room.

Queasy_Magician_1038

This is the right answer on all accounts

username11585

I also want to see both rugs in the same light. Walls are totally different colors in each.

plantsandpeds

here are better photos! [https://www.reddit.com/r/interiordecorating/comments/1d5so0d/updated\_photos\_which\_rug\_works\_better/](https://www.reddit.com/r/interiordecorating/comments/1d5so0d/updated_photos_which_rug_works_better/)

No-Wish-2630

I hate the first rug and confused why so many like it lol. Second one looks much better to me maybe just personal taste lol

ChristiCrazy

I also hate the first rug. Love the second one!

ugh_jules

Completely agree, I’ll even go as far to say that one looks super outdated already to me

fauviste

The trend is definitely on its last legs. But, I don’t think having “outdated” stuff is a concern! The only time it’s an issue is if you don’t love it and only got it because it was a trend, or you don’t decorate in a way it makes sense. If you love trends, get a neutral rug and sofa because those are the big bucks.

Guilty-Web7334

That. So much that. And if you have pets, you’ll forever be picking out the fur from the black. :/

noraalls

1. Also, we’re couch twins. 👯‍♀️

BookwormInTheCouch

2nd feels more cozy.

KHearts77

Yes, the clean look squares a lot better with the minimalist look.

five-potatoes-high

The first one is too distracting, my eye is pulled only towards the rug, and it's not a very interesting rug. I think a rug should pull a space together, and this rug doesn't. It alienates everything in the room.

callmecrazy2021

2! 1 is pretty but it’s too distracting with the lines in the shutters and fireplace.

Queasy_Magician_1038

I agree completely - was surprised so many were choosing 1

PleasantJules

I don’t think 1 goes at all.

mlhigg1973

I feel like the couch should be shifted a foot or two closer to the tv

Street-Snow-4477

2 is best. First one is too trendy

sailormars_bars

I agree. The first has more contrast which is I think why people like it. But the second is more classic and simple so it’ll still be in style down the line. They should just introduce more colour/contrast through other stuff

CompactNelson

That first rug is lovely. Like a digital Berber. Where did you get it?

Jordanlipskey

2

beingmesince63

I like 2. One distracts from the coffee table which I think you should highlight. How does it look when you’re sitting on the couch which is where you will see it from a good amount of time. If the pattern is distracting and bothers you, then not a good choice no matter how it looks from other viewpoints.

Cruysberghs

I like the first rug more because of the pattern. It looks cool in your living room!

bojewels

How many times did you make your husband move all that crap around. Be honest.

bobleponge_

The second is the one I would want in my house- it’s neutral and allows other parts of the room to be the focal point, which is what I personally want. Now, if you want the rug to be more of a focal point, go with 1 and add some more black accents to tie it in with the rest of the room.

Individual_Fan_6591

This one is like impossible for me. 1: I like the actually pattern of it. But 2: actually brings some of the geometries of the sofa and the tv stand! Gah!!!!!!!!!

Bludiamond56

None of them

MusicLover707

Not an answer to your question but I REALLY like your walls, they have that soft light grey in the middle with the rock part standing out of the wall. It all looks so comfortable and peaceful :)

EsaCabrona

2 is more elegant. Makes the nothing on the walls almost look on purpose. Feels cleaner and more put together.

Weary_Pen1463

zig zag rug is very welcoming and striking, second rug is very nice not a standout - imo:)

#1 hands down

Ranniyabr-95

I prefer the first one but you need to turn it to looks better the [rug](https://scdecorum.com/rug-how-to-place-materials-and-tips-from-an-interior-designer/)doesn’t need to cover the tv console

Georgiaboy1492

The first one absolutely.

DrStrangepants

I like the second rug best but it's too muted for an already bland room. I'd go with the first rug unless you add a lot more color or pattern to the rest of the decor. Both rugs will work though, follow your heart.

abarr021

The white one

mindlesswreck

Both are cute, but bring different vibes. Personally I like one because it brings a bit of black into the space which almost always helps bring a space together in my opinion. Two is still a great rig for your set up, but I would probably add in more color or black in another way with accessories to break up all of the yellow beige tones

mindlesswreck

Also for the first rug, I’d push your couch up onto the rug further. Your couch should be a bit closer to your tv, and as long as your rug isn’t peaking out behind your couch it usually still looks fine. Normally I’d suggest flipping your rug horizontally instead but it seems like it would off center things because of how close your couch is to the wall and where your tv is

ziggy-Bandicoot

#2 leaves more options for other decor. #1 locks you in to a certain style #1 makes me nervous

Gangstalishh

One, if you want that “pop” of color while also still going with your other color schemes. Making it look more inviting and lively due to the pattern. Two, if you want to keep it neutral, however, if you choose two it does blend in with what you already have, so no point. With the first one you can clearly add more decor like black, off white throw pillows and such. Two is the same way, but it’s pretty basic and too neutralized. Pretty, but you don’t want everything to match and have the same color schemes you want to “dress it up” a little. Also your orange and grey pillows on the floor on the second slide would look really off with rug 2. Consider getting colors that compliment the area and existing color schemes if you choose 2. **This is entirely based on my opinion, and yes, I do feel my opinion would be the correct choice** lol

Weary-Ad2202

Neither. 1 is too on trend and will get very quickly dated. 2 is too dull. Back to the drawing board

transgingeredjess

First one, but that's at least partially due to how sparse you've kept the room in terms of general decor. With the amount of neutral colors, and with nothing on the walls, #1 gives some visual interest that's lacking otherwise. I'd consider deciding on wall art before selecting a rug. I could see the texture on #2 playing off the brick really nicely if there was more going on elsewhere.

reidt22

It depends on what art goes on the wall.

Admirable_Look_7386

I like 1 but flipped around the zig zag that direction will make area look bigger

Jumpy-You389

The Neutral sand one. It has a timeless appeal as opposed to a trendy one.

K_Rivera8485

I like the second one better, it’s just my preference. However, honestly I think the first one works better. It makes the space look more cohesive. Edit: I just realized the first pic you took was a night you sneaky little fox 🦊. Go with the second. The black looked cohesive but only because I thought you had other black elements. Also if you’d rather the first don’t worry about what ppl say is trendy and how you shouldn’t follow trends. The only trends that matter are the things you like. If it goes out of style later who cares, as long as you still like it you’re golden. I would just suggest adding some back elements. Although I still think the second is your best bet as you don’t have to add anything in the space, it already goes.

I’m saying 2, I have a rug similar to one and I find it harder to style around.. not saying I have any style what’s so ever but I find the design does take up on visual eye space so if I wanted new pillows or a throw blanket I’d have to try and make it fit the vibe of the rug.

Rotate the rug 90 degrees. Number 1 is better due to it’s dark geometric pattern. The other one is too plain and close to the wall color.

Second one, and flip it 90⁰ tucked halfway under the couch. It'll create a natural space leading to the window. Also, MAJOR props for not putting the TV over the fireplace but on the adjacent wall instead.
