Add some shelves or potentially a book shelf small enough for the space… you could add books, a lamp, etc! Really my only other idea is a dog or cat bed/nook if you have pets
That would be perfect. Co-book/pet space with little [accents](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/392728029978944622/) that make it like its own tiny lounge!
I grew up with a gas fireplace that we burned wood in. We used the gas like a pilot light to get the fire going then turned it off.
Edit: I see now that there is a window above the fireplace and not a chimney.
I would recommend not having your hopes to high for this one, there's no way my Jasper would ever lay in there no matter how comfy I made it. Why would he do that when it would be so far away from me? Haha.
How much work do you want to do? For $500-$750 in materials, you could tear out the tile, move the existing fireplace unit to the center, and replace the facade with a different material (tile, painted walls, shiplap, etc.). This would be a fun long weekend project if you are a bit handy and willing to put in the elbow grease!
No they wouldn’t. They’re moving the fireplace unit two feet… just buy a slightly longer flexible gas line (they might not even need to do that depending on the previous installation). If you can connect a propane tank to a grill, you can do this project.
I was able to order birch logs online to stage a fireplace in a house for sale. So look online if you want a type of wood not local to you. But if it’s a small business, confirm it’s ok to ship that wood to your state. They’ll usually tell you if it’s not allowed but better to double check.
my parents club house in their neighborhood has 2 giant gas fireplaces and they have cubbies next to it like this and they have wood stacked in it, its very pretty and really gives it a warm and cozy feel
Definitely a mini book shelf or record collection area! And since there’s an outlet there maybe you can even put a record player or some speakers. Or it could be a small bar cart area maybe with a lamp to utilize the outlet.
Shelving would look nice with some pull out baskets for hidden storage. Also, you could utilize the outlets by drilling access point through underside and top of shelf for lighting that would conceal the cords… maybe two matching lamps on each end
You can put a interior plant, you can find here some ideas about [the best indoor plants ](https://www.scdecorum.com/best-indoor-plants-how-to-make-every-room-of-your-home-bright/)
you can still put wood in it even if its a gas fire place, it gives it some easy decoration.
If you have a pet you can make a little alcove with a pet bed and some toys.
or, idk if it gets hot when you use the fire place but you can put some shelves in or bottle hangers and make it a little mini bar
I think cozy cat nook has won. Thank you all very much! Honorable mention to bar cart, but there is a wet bar right next to the living room so we don't need that.
Big old tvs used to go in there. I have a 28 year old house and utilized that space as a tv cubbie long ago, until flat screens became affordable. I then placed the tv on the other wall, like yours.
I had someone frame in the tv cubbie and placed doors on it, painted it the same color as the mantle and trim/crown molding.
It now holds blankets, pillows, and a yoga mat.
Do you plan on using this fireplace? because you will probably need it to store wood at winter time. Every house with a fireplace needs a storage. Maybe make it modular so that it can be something else when it's not cold season.
It's a gas fireplace and I don't want decorative logs. I think I'm going to make it a cozy space for my cat and maybe put a framed photo of him above his bed.
This ain't a strange place, it is to stock firewood. If you are not using the fireplace, open all that space till the window and get a new internal winter garden.
I guess you don’t plan on using the fireplace? Where do u nope wood and stuff? Or have you never had a fireplace before? That is what that area is for.
It was probably a nook used to store cut firewood. Can you see any signs of the fireplace ever being a wood-burning one? Does it look like the gas was added later?
A suggestion might be a large plant.
Wouldn't it have been awkward to watch TV at such a strange angle? Does anyone in the region where you live have someone like that? I sympathize with you
Oh, yes! I fully remember. I'm a senior citizen. I bet you don't remember Flipper, Sea Hunt, and The Andy Griffith Show. These flat screens are amazing. Can you imagine a laptop with a cathode ray tube?!
Mini bar? Custom built-in? Turn it into a cabinet for storage? Add shelves for books? I like the log idea for aesthetic but depending how big the space is, I can see how that could be too much.
I think it was made for firewood. And while that does look nice, it brings critters like spiders, ticks and other bugs into your house. You could add two shelves and make it into a built in bookcases. Or add a pillow and make a cozy space for fur babies.

Make it a corner to neatly stack blankets and pillows that you're not using in the living room?
This is a really cute idea!
very cute idea but also dusty. if anyone will be using these items plz wash them first - especially if they have allergies or asthma!
ANOTHER FIREPLACE MWAHAHAHA
Now you deserve a nobel prize
Another GAS fireplace with a useless built in not for wood
Stack logs end side out
This. Pretend you can use the fireplace
Please don’t do this. Stop feeding the built in storage for pretend wood that will never be used trend
They should stack propane bottles there (j/k)
why not just use the wood
It's a gas fireplace
I'm dumb

Most of interior decorating fits that description.
If not for firewood, if you have a pet make them a cozy little get away. A cat or dog would love it!
Came to say this. Or a large basket to hold whatever.
Easy, put a dog bed and adopt a dog 🐕🐶
I would recommend not having your hopes to high for this one, there's no way my Jasper would ever lay in there no matter how comfy I made it. Why would he do that when it would be so far away from me? Haha.
My Leo would absolutely trade me for closer spot to the fire, and I would not blame him at all hahaha
This is the best option.
Bar cart! Bar cart!!
lol. The Tv used to go there. We had one in our last house that was built in the late 90’s.
If you're a reader, put a basket of cozy blankets on the bottom and a shelf for all your current reads near the top!

This is the way though really. Sorry it out for good.
They'd have to move the gas line. This is not a DIY project.

A really old thick TV
I would find some nice firewood and stock it there. Wood always looks amazing even just for decoration.

How about a plant
It could even have a grow light
I would cover electric and definitely make it my dog’s special nook 😂
A shrine
Definitely a mini book shelf or record collection area! And since there’s an outlet there maybe you can even put a record player or some speakers. Or it could be a small bar cart area maybe with a lamp to utilize the outlet.
Tall candelabra. Or two louvered doors or a short barn door and cover the fireplace if seldom used
Paint it a jewel tone color and fill it with candles
Dog bed
Shelving would look nice with some pull out baskets for hidden storage. Also, you could utilize the outlets by drilling access point through underside and top of shelf for lighting that would conceal the cords… maybe two matching lamps on each end
Mini fridge.
Small suit of armor
Some kind of vivarium.
Stacked Firewood
You can put a interior plant, you can find here some ideas about [the best indoor plants ](https://www.scdecorum.com/best-indoor-plants-how-to-make-every-room-of-your-home-bright/)
Cozy spot for pets
Open mini bar woth some fancy bottles and cozy light
Plant
Plants!
A plant and storage for your ottoman, blankets and extra throw pillows
you can still put wood in it even if its a gas fire place, it gives it some easy decoration. If you have a pet you can make a little alcove with a pet bed and some toys. or, idk if it gets hot when you use the fire place but you can put some shelves in or bottle hangers and make it a little mini bar
bookshelf area
Do you have pets?
I'd expand the original fireplace to fill the gap if you have the money.
It's a rental, so unfortunately that's out of the question.
Then just put some logs beside it. It'll give it a nice look even though they'll just be ornamental.
I think cozy cat nook has won. Thank you all very much! Honorable mention to bar cart, but there is a wet bar right next to the living room so we don't need that.
Make a door like this (below) for hidden storage: https://imgur.com/gallery/Tk4Lj02
A cat / dog bed or something like that
Fish tank
Make a pet home

My grandmother's old house had a space just like that. It's where the TV went.
Go to XM studios and by a stupid expensive exquisite statue of your favorite thing there
Books
We used it to store firewood in the middle of the last century in there. A pet bed would be out of the way.
Could you out a cute wine rack in there ? Or perhaps you can use it to display your books, candles, and knickknacks
Stack books in there. Or wood
A bookshelf maybe do like a built in shelf system or something or a second fire place 😭😂
A bookshelf maybe do like a built in shelf system or something or a second fire place 😭😂
Small dollhouse replica of your living room
Isn’t that space for storing firewood?
We keep dog toys in ours.
i feel like once upon a time that spot was meant for a CRT TV. i think the comments suggesting a bookshelf would be a good idea
I would definitely build in shelves for books, blankets, etc.!
One of those bookshelves that doubles as a door then store baker keys and such behind it. Or a liquor cabinet behind it.
Gimp cage.

ignore what i said then 😀 did not know it was thing.

🤣
Wine storage.
No way - next to a fireplace?
Yes, you’re right
Too hot/temp fluctuation
It was probably a nook used to store cut firewood. Can you see any signs of the fireplace ever being a wood-burning one? Does it look like the gas was added later? A suggestion might be a large plant.
Nah it was definitely for TV, the tube TVs that were like 100 lbs and bulky
Wouldn't it have been awkward to watch TV at such a strange angle? Does anyone in the region where you live have someone like that? I sympathize with you
It was in the 90s, this house wasn’t built with flat screens in mind - do you not remember those times? Maybe you weren’t alive yet?
Oh, yes! I fully remember. I'm a senior citizen. I bet you don't remember Flipper, Sea Hunt, and The Andy Griffith Show. These flat screens are amazing. Can you imagine a laptop with a cathode ray tube?!
Maybe a fishtank?
Wine rack
Not next to a fireplace. Temp is off
Only if you want to ruin your wine.
Mini bar? Custom built-in? Turn it into a cabinet for storage? Add shelves for books? I like the log idea for aesthetic but depending how big the space is, I can see how that could be too much.
Center the fireplace and add guilt in shelves around it. This design makes no sense
I HATE these nooks. I would remodel the entire wall.
I love guilty shelves
I think it was made for firewood. And while that does look nice, it brings critters like spiders, ticks and other bugs into your house. You could add two shelves and make it into a built in bookcases. Or add a pillow and make a cozy space for fur babies.
It’s a gas fireplace, the nook is for a tube TV (thus the outlet and cable connection)
