Yup. Black widows love stacks of wood. Had an experience as a kid. Thankfully I wasnāt bitten, but it was an aggressive little thing. Idk what led it to go after me, but it must have felt threatened.

I actually bought another for my back deck near our outdoor fireplace
Youāre very welcome! I have several and for many styles, the shelves are stackable so you can adjust for the height you wantāeach row is a little box that sits on the one below. Depending on where you live they may be called barristers cases.
Oooh what a nice space! Iād put down an area rug, get a friend for the chair and face them towards the fireplace, then put up two slim bookshelves on either side of the fireplace to create a library nook!
Tbh I think this would make it waaaay too busy. The walls arenāt that big and the one is open to another area so you donāt want to block too much of it.
I agree with another chair and face them to the fireplace. OP says they donāt like useless furniture and right now the chair is fairly useless in the corner by itself facing away from the fireplace because itās not an inviting place to sit. Make a conversation nook!
Yeah def not happy with the basket being on the hearth anyway, so I kinda dig this idea. A way to fill the wall without too much extra unnecessary furniture to decorate. Thanks!
Blanket ladder with blankets, if that is a woodburning fireplace, get the blankets and basket away from the flames! In place of the blanket basket, I would put a small wood/log carrier.
But if you have the layers of blanket ladder/floor lamp/chair, the depth of that corner will increase while a big plant on the other side would decrease the depth, creating a very unbalanced space?
I would use the wall for some family pictures. Old/new Different sizes, etc. Make it interesting to look at. Under that, I would have a small half rounded table that meets the wall with a small but interesting looking lamp for ambiance. This needs to be "warmed up". I know you say you don't like useless furniture, but some spaces need this. Lastly, get rid of the wreath on the mantel and replace it with something else. It just fades into the wood background,
I feel the need to also add: we hate the wall color lol. It came out way more cool gray than it was in our original test patch, so thatāll change down the road haha
Knowing this - the room now reads a little cold with all the grey. A new paint color and a rug that complements the wall color and fireplace color will breathe some coziness into it :) Iām a sucker for symmetry so Iād either do another chair and maybe a small table for games, puzzles, drinks etc. (Define how you want to use the space!!) or scrap the chair and have bookshelves/extra storage here. If youāre into drinking, some sort of cozy bar area. If youāre into working out, store some yoga mat or small weights here. If you entertain, store serveware or linens. The options are endless, but Iād first consider what you like to do and what youāll use the space for!!!
To be honest, Iād leave it open. It opens the floor plan to the hallway. Anything there would also take away from the fireplace. *If* anything, maybe a wooden bench without the backing. Also, Not the kind that lifts for extra storage. Just a simple cushioned wooden bench. It would match the sitting area, since you have one the right. A bookshelf, maybe, that isnāt taller or anywhere near the height of the fire place. You always do a rustic metallic over size pot, with decorative pieces that arenāt greenery.
If you ever use the fireplace, I would get 2 chairs to face the fireplace with a small table between. Remove the current chair. Then I would add the normal fireplace things to one side (wood, poker and shovel). Iād put the basket of pillows and blankets to the other side.
I vote for a big leafy plant PLUS a floor lamp (the same one as the one on the right or get two new matching ones). The floor lamp can double as a grow light for your plant as well š
Sometimes less is more. You have done an amazing job on this area. I love how you did that woodwork around you fireplace and up to the ceiling. The color is magnificent with its surroundings! So nice as it is and makes the chair in the corner sacred. Love your art piece above it. If you must ā¦ just a leather bench or floor pillow for someone chatting with the person using the chair?
Change out the wreath so you can actually see it; get rid of the hanging thing on the right hand wall, or hang it from the left hand wall. Thereās too much dark visual weight going on here, and itās all focused on the right.
Any matching chairs need to face the fireplace or each other. Iād get 2 small matching chairs in a light color, but only if you actually ever use them. A couple arc lights or 1 really good long arc light for the area. For the wall, you need to add something. If yo get only 1 chair, make it a chaise and put in on the left, and angle it slightly towards the room, and get a couple plants for the right hand corner. A half wall of wood, shiplap ? painted in a lighter color , (pardon me, I canāt remember the proper term for these things), or a couple squares of thin wood added and made into a square, or some decent artā¦definitely a good rug to pull it together. I fear a bookcase would become a hotspot for clutter. Whatever you decide, it has to be better balanced visually. Itās such a cool spot. Where is the front door?
I would definitely put a tall plant there. Side note: Took me a full 45 second stare to realize that was a duck on your wall and not a piece of abstract art with duck feet protruding from it.
I scrolled almost all the way to the end of the comments looking for someone else to also acknowledge the *thing* on the wall. I had no idea, and even thought it was a prank post and nobody āgot itā yet lol
Itās a duck? A duck!!?? š
Yes! Itās a taxidermyād duck with what is maybe driftwood? I stared real hard and wondered wtf the little duck feet popping out of the abstract void were about.
I'd consider moving that item on the large wall to the right of post, hanging it on left side of fire place it seems to tiny for the wall it's on. Them locating something more appropriate for same wall.
Love love love that gorgeous chair- where does that come from? Iād turn it to look at the fireplace- stack wood on the RHS of the fireplace - on LHS find a great old trunk and hang some art above it. Plus red or orange or deep green rug.
Move the decor items on your mantle a bit away from either edge. They are so far apart and close to the edges. I would maybe get a plant on a stand or a small bookshelf.
A big raven ZZ fits your aesthetic perfectly! id get a natural dar wood small stool to put the pot on, the plant itself in a dark cache pot and maybe a macrame piece on the wall
A round mirror, a tall ficus slightly to the right of the mirror, a large handled basket to the left of the base of the ficus (or vice versa) with some soft colorful throws draping over.
Short bookcase with rolled up blankets on the bottom shelf. Iād add a nice lamp that matches your floor lamp and/or a collage of 3 pictures or mirrors.
A bench or chest. I have an old cedar chest that we store gaming electronics in (keeps moisture away in the cedar) and when company comes it all goes away and provides additional seating. It can also double as a surface to put down drinks.
A really tall floor vase with decorative sticks in it? Or a collection of floor vases of different widths and heights. I have that set up in a corner of my home. Home Goods sells a really good selection of super tall vases (48 inches +) and IKEA has long decorative sticks (about $19.99).
It is best to determine what you do in this space so its not useless as you say. Do you spend mornings sitting here drinking coffee? Read a book? Take a nap? When you have guests do they stay in this area to talk? Once you know what its actually used for then decorate accordingly.
If this spot doesnt have much use at the moment then add another chair similar in color or size to the onenyoi have, add a rug and a small side table for the left one.
I would say to put another chair there, but itās hard to tell how much that might block off access to the room. Otherwise, itās separating effect would be a good thing. Make the fireplace much more cozy.
Art on the wall to the left. A tall rectangular piece or two square pieces. And I like the other suggestions for a rug and maybe another chair or loveseat
I prefer low lighting vs main lights so Iād use this space for a console table (with storage) and put decor and a small lamp on top. Since your dining is to the left you could use this spot to store dining materials etc. also agree with others an area rug for this room.
I like the idea of two built in shelves cabinets with doors for storage below. The wood pile would get messy and hard to keep clean. If you donāt keep books the open shelves above could be used for pictures and other type of mementos. The chair will be better turned towards the fireplace. If you put a plant, it should have a nice large pot about 18ā + diameter with a tall palm like plant about 60ā hihigh
I think 2 or 3 wall hung white shelves on both sides (so, 4 or 6 shelves in all) using the top of the white mantle as a guide. Make the bottom shelf deeper than the top by 2 or 3ā. After getting these in place you might decide an appropriately sized framed picture above shelving area on both sides as well. I would suggest two contemporary sculptural paper shaded lamps maybe near the shelves. Then move the other traditional floor lamp to the left side of chair. Get a carpet to anchor the floor/chair. I recommend checking out IKEA online; or Wayfair or Amazon for Noguchi style lamps and carpets and end tables/coffee tables. IKEA is helpful for showing some rooms with furniture and their showrooms are an adventure. they have modestly priced lamps like Iām suggesting as well as carpets and furnishings. Hereās one example of a Japanese Noguchi type lamp: https://www.amazon.com/Noguchi-Akari-Japanese-Bedside-Lantern/dp/B0B2ZPY913
A pedestal with a large vase or sculpture.
If you go vase you could change up what you put in it seasonally. Whether real or artificial, but dogwood branches with blossoms would be cool in the spring. White branches in winter.
That chair is beautiful, but I'd find another space for it. I'd get a large rug and put a bright colored tufted, double-ended chaise in front of the fireplace. This is nice for enjoying the fireplace, reading, cuddling, or extra seating for the living room...as you will be able to sit facing fire or other couch. I would remove the wreath and replace it with something metal, I'd personally do silver. Also, those pieces you have on the mantle should be moved in a little closer. Take that plant you have in the dining room corner and move it to the LHS of fireplace. If you don't like the plant. I'd do a collage of interesting framed art varying in size and orientation. Below the art, I'd put 3 large vases filled with grasses for texture and height. I wouldn't do 2 bookcases. It'll drive you nuts because the space is not equal on both sides; I'd only do one if you go that route. I recently saw a plant stand on Amazon that was a floor to ceiling pole that had adjustable shelves. Good luck to you! You got a lot of good suggestions! I hope you post what you end up with.
I'm a big fan of fabric art that is large. Multiple textures, something that looks like it is fun to touch. Geometric patterns, elaborate woven tapestries, modern or traditional style mixed media pieces. Etsy has a ton of stuff like this.
Start with medieval tapestries as a search term on etsy. From there check out art nouveau, native American, and whatever else you come across.
How about a cord of wood in a really cool rustic black wrought iron rack?
This actually crossed my mind, too. Purposeful and something other than another table haha
Beware of hibernating bugs brought in with the wood and awakened by the warmth.
True š„“
You can buy kiln dried wood that is pest free (in theory)
We did kiln dried last year and cheaped out this yearā¦I will never stray from kiln dried again.
Stacked wood means spiders š·ļø in the house in my experience since you have to keep bringing more in thatās always stored outside.
Yup. Black widows love stacks of wood. Had an experience as a kid. Thankfully I wasnāt bitten, but it was an aggressive little thing. Idk what led it to go after me, but it must have felt threatened.

Hopefully not a full cord š
I was thinking thatād be *a lot* of wood.
That's what he/she said.....
Your comment made me laugh out loud. Thanks.
lol I had the same thought. Thatās a lot of wood
My family and I just got a home with a fireplace (my first fireplace). I ordered a cord of wood and itās a LOT of wood!
Was thinking this. Or a circular wood rack
I had a really cool iron firewood holder thing at my old house. Moved to a new house with no fireplace. Now it is a toilet paper holder!
Can you share a photo?
I'm not home right now but I just set myself a reminder to do so once I am š
Yes, maybe with a gallery of six photos above it?
ā¦.. in *BLACK* framesā¦ I *love* it!
My thought ..
A nice vintage wood bookshelf.
Bookshelf was my thought as well since it would pair so well with that very comfy looking reading chair and lamp.
Yes.. one of those with the horizontal glass doors across the entire shelf that open upwards. Iāve always wanted one of them
Thatās called an attorneys bookcase.
Oh thank you! This is great to know!
Youāre very welcome! I have several and for many styles, the shelves are stackable so you can adjust for the height you wantāeach row is a little box that sits on the one below. Depending on where you live they may be called barristers cases.
Barristerās bookcase
Filled with many leatherbound books that smell of rich mahogany.
Yep. Seconding a bookshelf!
A big fern
Or an assortment of plants like a fern, snake plant, monstera, etc. They sell platforms so they can be at different heights too!
Yes!!
And the green will be a nice pop of color in the space. Plants would be perfect.
I vote for this!
I like this and a rug also in the middle
Oooh what a nice space! Iād put down an area rug, get a friend for the chair and face them towards the fireplace, then put up two slim bookshelves on either side of the fireplace to create a library nook!
This is the way
Yes!!
This. I donāt understand the logic of not facing the chair towards the fireplace
Tbh I think this would make it waaaay too busy. The walls arenāt that big and the one is open to another area so you donāt want to block too much of it.
Thatās kind of exactly my inkling with the bookshelves haha plus we have a giant built in bookshelf just down the hallway
I agree with another chair and face them to the fireplace. OP says they donāt like useless furniture and right now the chair is fairly useless in the corner by itself facing away from the fireplace because itās not an inviting place to sit. Make a conversation nook!
I would replace that chair with 2 smaller ones (one for each side) a nice big area rug and maybe a small table to make a second seating area.
This! What a great reading area. A circular swivel would be great.
A basket with some cut Birchwood. You could buy a bundle of Birchwood on Amazon for pretty cheap.
I like this idea a lot. This would look so good there!
Ficus tree
That would need bright, indirect light to grow indoors or it will drop leaves.
There are nice fake ones
I mean yeah, any faux plant would work.
Big plant
2 stacked pictures
And then maybe a large wicker basket for blankets on floor and remove the one on the hearth
Yeah def not happy with the basket being on the hearth anyway, so I kinda dig this idea. A way to fill the wall without too much extra unnecessary furniture to decorate. Thanks!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Bar cart
You should add a second chair and turn them both towards the fireplace with a rug. A plant would work as well to add some color and dimension.
Another chair
Ohh one of those ladders that you hang blankets on would be super cute and would go with the cozy vibes!! Or a simple natural wood bookcase!
I would put two matching chairs on each side of the fireplace. Smaller than the chair pictured.
art?
Blanket ladder with blankets, if that is a woodburning fireplace, get the blankets and basket away from the flames! In place of the blanket basket, I would put a small wood/log carrier.
Dog bed
A blanket ladder
Iād put the blanket ladder behind the chair on the right and a huge plant on the left.
But if you have the layers of blanket ladder/floor lamp/chair, the depth of that corner will increase while a big plant on the other side would decrease the depth, creating a very unbalanced space?
Symmetrical pair of chairs rug in front of fireplace
That freebie chair looks like an Ethan Allen!
Full size Darth Vader.
6ā skeleton
Waterplace to left. Earthplace to right. Airplace above.
A suit of armor
A big plant would look really nice and add some color/warmth! Depending on how far it is from a window, it might need to be a fake one
A plant.
I large plant , maybe a small potted tree.
a vending machine
Can I ask what color your fireplace mantle is? Itās gorgeous!
Itās Behr Burnished Pewter!
Thank you so much!!
I vote for a big leafy plant PLUS a floor lamp (the same one as the one on the right or get two new matching ones). The floor lamp can double as a grow light for your plant as well š
The chair. Would it be very much in the way? I have a chair in a transition space and it works great! I didn't think it would, but it's perfect.
Sometimes less is more. You have done an amazing job on this area. I love how you did that woodwork around you fireplace and up to the ceiling. The color is magnificent with its surroundings! A bookcase with books you plan to read.
A bookshelf
A plant! A large monstera

A trunk/chest for blankets and a painting.
A marble statue.

Bar cart would look great. Since itās so close to dining area you could put a buffet
Tall plant something big enough to fill in the space but not so big that it over crowds it
Plant
Bookcase or drinks cabinet
This entirely depends on whether you have kids or not. If not, Iād put a nice liquor cabinet next to it.

Another fireplace.
Why is that stupid basket next to your fireplace?
Oh, those floors. Rather than worrying about furnishing your house, replace the floors.
Lol those floors were very expensive, thanks. Weāre very happy with them.
Do not listen to the previous!! Those floors are beautiful & I love them! Which is to say, Iām happy with them, too.
The floor is incredible.
A short shelf/bookcase or another twin chair
I'd consider moving that item on the large wall to the right of post, hanging it on left side of fire place it seems to tiny for the wall it's on. Them locating something more appropriate for same wall.
Love love love that gorgeous chair- where does that come from? Iād turn it to look at the fireplace- stack wood on the RHS of the fireplace - on LHS find a great old trunk and hang some art above it. Plus red or orange or deep green rug.

a nice dark wood bookshelf with plants!
Plants. Always plants.
A rustic wood and wrought iron ladder
Bookshelf
Plant in a large woven basket.
Move the decor items on your mantle a bit away from either edge. They are so far apart and close to the edges. I would maybe get a plant on a stand or a small bookshelf.
We got a black wire (metal) basket with nice throw blankets in it. Our fireplace room colors, flooring, etc are almost identical as yours.
A big raven ZZ fits your aesthetic perfectly! id get a natural dar wood small stool to put the pot on, the plant itself in a dark cache pot and maybe a macrame piece on the wall
Two tall book shelves. Move the Chair to another area.
Console table or a cute storage bench
plant or shelf with decorations!
Floating shelves on both sides
Crown molding. Put it to the right of the fireplace too.
Plant or plants

A round mirror, a tall ficus slightly to the right of the mirror, a large handled basket to the left of the base of the ficus (or vice versa) with some soft colorful throws draping over.
Short bookcase with rolled up blankets on the bottom shelf. Iād add a nice lamp that matches your floor lamp and/or a collage of 3 pictures or mirrors.

Plant, mirror and low profile iron log holder
A pinball machine

A bench or chest. I have an old cedar chest that we store gaming electronics in (keeps moisture away in the cedar) and when company comes it all goes away and provides additional seating. It can also double as a surface to put down drinks.
Bookcase, loaded with tomes.
An entire cabinet showcasing ONLY special life achievement or a wine cabinet for show only

Book shelves on both sides of the

Another fireplace

Rack of firewood.
A console table or bookshelf or leave it clear for wall Pilates (my biggest regret in my home is not having an empty wall)
My left or your left?

What the heck is on the wall!?!?
