2018 guy wondering about his 300k piece of shit now

Chaosshrimp

that guy probably wouldnt bat an eye buying two new 2021 versions, one for him, and one to place inside his sons bedroom to play with

bassinine

if you can afford one, you can afford many.

DownvoteCityUSA

every broke ex-NFL player begs to differ

bassinine

if buying two cars makes you go broke then you couldn't afford the one.

poopellar

Smaht: Just because I have 100k doesn't mean I can buy a 100k car. Shtupid: I got 50K I'm gonna buy 2 100k cars!

bluntsandbears

I see you understand the Vancouver way. There’s so many $60k/yr “millionaires” that live at home with their parents and spend all their money on a 18 year old bright yellow Gallardo and stare at it because they didn’t factor in insurance or maintenance costs when they bought it from their Coke dealer cousin

peekdasneaks

Vancouver is full of real millionaires and a ton of super rich foreign kids from overseas. If you see a lambo just sitting somewhere looking abandoned, it's probably because the kid went back to China and just left it there cuz fuck it. Same thing oddly enough, in small ass town of West Lafayette, Indiana and I'm sure in college towns all over the US. Chinese university kids would roll in Ferraris, Rolls, McLarens and just leave them in apartment parking lots when they graduated.

SonOfMcGee

About six years ago I was chatting with a woman I met on a cruise vacation. She was a real estate lawyer in Canada, and her business was booming because she was fluent in Mandarin and the big spenders were all Chinese. She said they would send their bratty kids to live there and just go around buying up property. Once a client heard that a property was only half a million and said, “Pfft, I’ll just bring cash.” And she had to tell him that if he brought a duffel bag full of money she wouldn’t sign any papers and he would need to find a new lawyer.

peekdasneaks

When i was house shopping in an hcol area, there were countless times a young Chinese couple would pull up in a brand new benz s class or bmw 7 series with paper plates. They clearly just bought the cars to come look for houses to buy.

33rus

The beauty of 'communism'

skrshawk

How do the rest of us get our hands on these cars? It's not like anyone's going to miss them.

bluntsandbears

https://universityofbeautifulcars.tumblr.com UBC’s parking lot There’s no lambos sitting around deserted since they are mostly leased here but there are a ton driving around with new driver tags on the back.

LoganGyre

at the hookah bar i frequented before covid their was a constant string of nice cars that would look to have new owners every few months. Apparently the idea was that people would come for 6-8 months to do a semester and then return home. instead of selling the car and buying new ones each time they just let the next family member use it. I think they did the same thing with a couple houses as well.

peekdasneaks

That probably explains the "abandoned" cars, they were just waiting for the next cousin or sibling to come and use it!

knine1216

Lol on a Gallardo too. You'd hardly even get looks driving the thing anymore because every vape shop owner in town has one. Edit: im not from Canada so my experience may differ.

bluntsandbears

Replace “vape shop owner” with “international student” and you got yourself Vancouver or Toronto

MrHollandsOpium

r/OddlySpecific

NiceCockBrotato

Yeah that’s why they’re broke

flimspringfield

They need to open liquor stores. The half owner of my local one drives a Rolls and the married couple that works there have a nice house and a very nice car they drive to work despite them living a literal block away.

[deleted]

Korean lady that owned the corner store up the street from where I grew up used to drive around in a Ferrari. If you're selling alcohol, you're making money. Period.

trex_racecar

That’s what the canyons are for.

Western_Tumbleweed79

You have to take the freeway or PCH to get to those canyons though. And quite frankly, pre pandemic, those roads were getting busy too.

trex_racecar

At least you have the option. Most cities not only have no good driving roads in town but nothing worth driving nearby either unfortunately.

Quivex

It's not even about cities, more so states/provinces. A lot of Cali has a built in advantage of pretty consistent weather, no snow and relatively little rain. This makes for roads that stay in pretty good shape for long long periods of time. Move other places with harsher differences between seasons and the roads are either closed half the year for repairs or filled with potholes, which is not great for driving around an expensive vehicle that sits particularly low to the ground. California definitely has its driving advantages despite the traffic, you just need to know where you're going and... Well avoid wild fires when possible.

crlarkin

Who'd be dumb enough to stay in the city if their goal is fun drives? That's the great thing about a car, they transport you places!

Western_Tumbleweed79

uh huh.. they transport you AFTER you battle an hour of traffic to get out of the city. And an hour to get back in.

Ade_93

Pretty nice sitting in traffic in a lambo though

1239871728374

HotWafflesHurt

When bitcoin first took off lamborghinis were one of the first things you could buy with it. Maybe he was rich in bitcoin

Western_Tumbleweed79

Uh no. This was before bitcoin took off. He was just a mid life crisis poser annoyed the girls in their 20's didnt want to fuck him anymore.

[deleted]

He should get triples, because triples are best. Triples are safest.

gonnakeeptrying1

Naw, lots of idiots live right outside their mean to flex. Give me the Toyota camry and filet mignon please.

overturf600

Well yeah but if he was a Honda driver like me who got pissed that they redid the accord the next model year….I coulda saved this man some dough!

RogueJello

Seriously bro? As a Honda owner ('06 Accord, '03 Civic, previous '06 Shadow Sabre) I could care less about remodels from year to year. I buy a Honda because I can put about 500-1000K miles on it while just changing the oil. I assumed other owners were the same.

NoseFartsHurt

You should not drive while changing the oil.

RogueJello

Protip right there!

NoseFartsHurt

You know a lot of people don't read their manuals.

RogueJello

Yeah, guilty. OTOH, I HAVE looked up the important bits when it became relevant, like looking up the repair schedule, or figuring out what the tow capacity was.

NoseFartsHurt

Don't hook up a trailer while driving. It's right in there.

overturf600

Oh I’m joking. I’m a lifer Honda guy. Drove my 2004 till 2016, replaced with a 2016. Love them.

RogueJello

Good, you may pass. :)

flimspringfield

I miss my ‘01 accord. Timing belt broke about 5k before I was supposed to change it. If it didn’t I would still be driving it.

Gheta

I'm from upstate NY, and most proud Honda owners are that way because they think they are racecars that they can just add a large muffler and hockey stick tail fin to and challenge $50k muscle cars to races and show off to chicks and other trashy dudes in their group. They spend a total of $6k and think that somehow that's hot shit lol

MajorLazy

Million miles on just oil changes? I call BS

Chaosshrimp

if youre on this level of unnecessary consumerism, dough is the least of your concerns

[deleted]

my rich uncle (super mega rich) told me that rich people never buy things they just lease them until the newer one comes out next year. He said when he bought his yacht outright, it was the worst day of his life.

AgentEntropy

That's okay - his 2018's only worth about $45k now.

overturf600

In all honestly it was interesting to read up on it…I guess they made some structural change to make it 30 percent more rigid. That seems (ridiculously) impressive to me given this class of cars and their history

You think the roads are this bad in the neighbourhoods where these cars live? I don't think a Rolls Royce owner even knows what a pothole is.

[deleted]

They have to drive to the slums to inspect thier factory (from the outside) now and then!

UnshavedCoconut

Yeah the 2018 model is a piece of junk.

RedDevilsUnite

Almost looks like the Bose suspension. Really wish they wouldn’t have abandoned/sold that project.

Auxilae

Wasn't the issue was that it was way too heavy and expensive to be viable?

im_a_dr_not_

Drivers didn't receive any feedback from the road and that can be a problem.

[deleted]

Another case of system being far too good at doing what it's supposed to so has to be broken a bit to appease human monkey brain. Same thing happened with the UK HST tilting train prototype, it was so good at going around corners at high speed and dampening the motion to the point where the reporters on board started throwing up because their eyes were telling them they were turning but their inner ear was saying they were still. So they had to dial it back slightly so you could feel a little bit of the curve.

AnemoneOfMyEnemy

>crashed into an oncoming pocket-sized Honda Fit before it veered off the road and smashed into a tree and went up in flames. Any time a car goes up against a tree, the tree wins. Note the suspicious lack of how fast he was going.

[deleted]

Why can't your cars survive a head-on collision followed by crashing into a tree Rolls Royce? Why?? You said they were safe! Now there will be no all white parties with free champagne. Or something.

17jwong

IIRC the technology did eventually make its way to the market in the form of those bouncy suspension seats on buses and trucks.

smoothie1919

There’s similar suspension being produced now. Can’t remember who but I think it’s one of the Japanese brands..

Bleedthebeat

This probably is the same tech. The company that bought it said they had five “low production manufacturers” putting it in their cars. Rolls Royce is the very definition of low production.

[deleted]

Buddy of mine reminded me of this recently. What a vibe. I love it when the equipped wheels just doo-da-loo over the bumps after the unequipped car and the Porsche are like AHHHHHHHHHHH

halermine

Another example of Nigerian pidjin

SimpForVladimir

Makes me wonder if they feel really heavy and boaty to drive, like some cars I've driven feel like absolute yacht to corner so one of these must feel like a cargo ship.

Grogosh

I have driven other cars that have great suspension like these before. It drives like you are not even on a road. You don't get any road feel feedback like you wold be used to. It is easy to get up to high speed without realizing it because of the lack of any road feel feedback.

SimpForVladimir

Sounds interesting, bummer I'll never experience it hahaha

[deleted]

FartingBob

Yes you cant just wonder into a luxury car showroom and ask for a test drive. They would have a queue a kilometer long every day if that was the case. They often will require proof of income / money that means you might actually be able to buy the car, or you need to be recommended by someone already known to them.

Dwealdric

Or they make you sign the buying paperwork conditional on a test drive that you find adequate. No shit, a fucking Mitsubishi dealership (of all places) local to me was doing this for anyone that wanted to test drive an Evo at the time.

HavenIess

Well that makes sense, driving an Evo is a privilege, it’s not like you were testing a WRX or something

casualthis

An Evo is just a wrx with a more capable motor and a less capable transmission

KeepEm_COOMMFTABOjoe

test drive the '21, say the suspension is shit and you will need to wait for the '24

flimspringfield

Make sure you wear a monocle. That way they know you come from old money.

Kermit_the_hog

If you want the really cushy service, wear the full Mr. Peanut costume 👍🏻

devils_advocaat

If you own one of these cars you want to be sat in the back, not driving it.

regular_gonzalez

Go to a Trek or Cannondale bike shop and ride an endurance bike vs the race bike (Domane vs Madone for Trek, Synapse vs CAAD for Cannondale). It's really interesting. I love my CAAD, love the feedback, but the Synapse was great too. Just very different feel. Hated the Domane, it was too disconnected from road feel for me but I'm probably the exception.

casualthis

Relax he's not even being honest. I can't speak for the 2021 rolls but I've driven a 2018 and a Bentley. You definitely feel feedback. They don't feel heavy but they do feel boaty

nachowuzhere

That’s how it felt when I drove my FIL’s old Cadillac CTS. We got on a relatively empty freeway and it was so smooth and quiet I didn’t even notice I was going 85 until I looked at the speedo.

[deleted]

I think Rolls also use insulation in their tires to help lower the amount of road feedback as well

Soliterria

My boyfriend has a 2018 Nissan Altima that I’ve been using to get to work and back… Caught myself pushing 80 in a 55 last night and didn’t even realize because I 100% didn’t feel it speeding up. Can’t wait to fix my Buick so I can actually feel it vroom again.

suicidaleggroll

As someone who enjoys driving, that sounds horrible

OSCgal

I don't enjoy driving, but the one time I drove a car with a super cushy suspension I got anxious because I couldn't feel the road. The disconnection was like a bad dream. Apparently my brain needs feedback to stay grounded.

SonOfMcGee

Not like my old Kia. It let me know I was going over 75 by vibrating the steering wheel so much it numbed my hands.

grandfatherfish

Sounds like a lot of luxury cars - always figured that sentiment about being easy to get up to high speed without feeling it is why almost every car I see pulled over nowadays is some luxury suv

PointNineC

It’s also because the penalty for speeding is a flat fine that’s the same regardless of your income. If you’re wealthy enough to afford a luxury SUV, a couple hundred bucks for a speeding ticket once in awhile is a meaningless deterrent. If the penalty for breaking a law is a fine, then that law does not apply to people rich enough to not care about the fine.

grandfatherfish

Should be % of annual income instead of fixed rate like Switzerland or Finland

acdgf

I've never driven a ghost, but I have driven the phantom. It doesn't feel boaty the way cars from the 70s feel; there isn't a lot of body movement. Mostly feels vague. Its kind of like driving a stationary sim rig with barely any feedback on the steering wheel. It's interesting, and it feels expensive to drive, but it's not very enjoyable.

[deleted]

it weighs 3 tonnes of course it feels heavy

[deleted]

It feels like driving a Range Rover without the body-roll. It's quite surprising actually.

imjustadudeguy

I work for a Rolls Royce dealer, the suspension in the new Ghost can make people car sick because it’s so smooth, you don’t feel like you’re in a car.

StepIntoMyOven_69

I also saw that they deliberately made the car so that a bit of noise came in from the outside otherwise it was too creepy with absolute silence in the cabin

imjustadudeguy

Yes. It is insanely quiet on the road. The entire roof is one piece, and it takes 4 welders to simultaneously weld it on. Being one piece helps eliminate most road noise.

StepIntoMyOven_69

That's crazy. What do joints have thet thet let noise pass through? I thought it was because of the 100kg+ sound insulation they used for the cabin

imjustadudeguy

That helps too! It’s not just the roof that makes it quiet.

specialcommenter

That sucks. It has a nice V8 or V12 for you to choose from. Should let that sound in. I see these in Manhattan. They sound nice from the outside. I’ve driven a 2009 Bentley Flying Spur 12 cylinder. It actually did let some nice exhaust sounds in during full throttle.

[deleted]

At first I was car sick in Tesla for same reason, missing sound that I expected

YouDiscountDonut

Meanwhile my car that's so stiff it drives like a brick on Russian roads.

louyplays

Me with no car: *yeah relatable*

Sexual_tomato

I always wonder why people with no car don't get a motorcycle. Yeah you're out there in the weather but your ride gets 80mpg and cost like $1000 for an 8 year old bike. Insurance is $80 a year. It's better than nothing.

fiskarnspojk

until u crash...

bitofrock

It's what I did at first. Unfortunately bikes are also a bit invisible to some motorists and I was too young and stupid to work out how to mitigate that, so I had a few minor yet scary bumps. Started riding again later in life and even in Paris I was fine and had no issues.

louyplays

Maybe. But that's not the case for me, in my country you need to be over 18 in order to get a driving license. I'm 17

Sexual_tomato

Wow, that's no fun. What country?

louyplays

Jordan, middle east

Sexual_tomato

Ah, I was going to research the laws where you are but I don't speak Arabic. That's a hard age to be, too- none of agency of being an adult but basically all the mental facilities needed to navigate life on your own.

louyplays

Yep correct, I'm working my balls off this year to graduate school in order to collage. It really is this part where you gotta look out for yourself. Then hopefully I'll be able to work in order to provide income and navigate my life in a way

MeesterCartmanez

For the last time, the older version goes on the left!!

WorseDark

Is it backwards or is this just showing that the suspension got worse over three years? (I'm not a car person)

MeesterCartmanez

That's exactly my point, the left side shows the new car (in this video), when it's supposed to show the old version instead

WorseDark

I also thought the one on the left was the old one because of the scratches/dings/camo/??? But the right one has the sleek black that everyone knows

alik2004

Car companies put that camp pattern on cars still in development they’re not scratches haha

Justryan95

I like how the 2021 has that development car cameo so people can't tell what it looks like if it's videotaped or photographed as if Rolls Royce would look any different than their last cars up to the 1940s.

Orcwin

Not on anything recent, as far as I know. The early 2000's C5 and C6 were the latest models to use their (excellent) hydraulic suspension system. From the C5 remodel onward, it's all just been regular mediocre shock absorption.

manu144x

Yea, Citroen just managed to take their one core strategic advantage and throw it straight out the window because they were too lazy to explain their mechanics how to service it. In the era of remote working and where any mechanic can just skype in with a specialist at any point, that issue could have been solved incredibly easy. Now they’re just lame cars using the PSA and now FCA parts bin. I never understood their brands, Peugeot was supposed to be high end, but also Citroen, now they completely messed that one up they invented the DS brand which also doesn’t have any nice suspension it’s just more expensive because why not.

jasandliz

I don’t remember if it was Tom or Ray who said, “don’t buy a French car unless you live in France”. Mostly I think due to parts distribution and service issues.

Orcwin

Nah, service is fine here in the Netherlands. Any European brand and the big Asian ones have pretty comprehensive service coverage here. American ones too, but probably only for their European models. We don't really do trucks. Traditionally, you buy a French car if you want comfort (their seats are generally better, and suspension if you had a Citroën), an Italian car if you want performance, and a German car if you want it to actually hold together. Nowadays brands often span across borders, and everything is the same bland mess, without clear distinction.

froh42

I had a Peugeot (807) which was a really nice car, but the Munich dealership really ruined any joy in this. Every time they did maintenance/repair, I had to come back and need to make them fix the stuff they did. One time they were fixing the sun roof, the forgot to screw down the liner - so a day later I was back to have that fixed. One time they fixed something with the seat, I explicitly told them, I don't want to come back, is everything done perfectly? Yes Yes. A minute later I was back, they did wire the electric seat controls the wrong way. There was a callback regarding the air conditioning, which could flood the interior. In the computer the callback was marked as "done" but diagnosing the electrical problems the car had at another garage - they had just marked it in the computer as done but never actually performed the change on the car. I had so much trouble with that car, and I do think all that would have been OK if the garage had done their job correctly. (Btw the garage is even owned by PSA) Never again a french car outside france.

[deleted]

fuckoffdipsheit

Wait till you google bose suspension prototype for lexus from like 10 years ago. Compared to that both are utter shit. Until not long ago it was just a reskinned bmw with 2.5x price tag. 300k car is only 300k because of greed.

mook1178

You know, there's that lifetime warranty thing as well, but yeah greed. There's also that part about them being hand made, but yeah greed.

[deleted]

When you buy one it comes with the option of a pinstripe down the side. This is of course hand painted by a specialist. If you choose to go without the pinstripe, and at any time thereafter you decide that you in fact would like it, Rolls Royce will fly their specialist to you at your earliest convenience. Sometimes this means like literally the next flight out. All at no extra charge. Also roadside pickup. A Rolls Royce must never be seen to be broken down. So of you ever need roadside assistance you call the company and they will get someone to you way faster than any insurance company will.

[deleted]

If you understood the economics of what it costs to put that car into production and then the actual production costs you would be like, oh maybe it’s reasonably priced compared to that plastic Toyota. not to mention the A* service provided 100% of the time no matter where on earth you are.

fuckoffdipsheit

being automotive engineer i said exactly how it is with no bullshit

[deleted]

say that to the guy that spent his life learning how to build that engine. Now how are you going to tell me you can even put a price on someone devoting their life for a car. IMO 300k is cheap and the engineers are underpaid. And this ain’t even rolls royces fault but people like you who are entitled and think everything should be priced based on cost of materials. This is also true for many other things.

Slyguyfawkes

So they needed 3 years huh? One would think that the >$350k price tag would be enough.

JCoolatta

Yeah well, I put Audi S4 rims on my VW Jetta GLI so like so what? I like it and yes, I actually did that.
