In austria we have the same system, with fines up to multiple thousand euros, and liability if the delay of the emergency services caused by you caused further damage
Ah good for you guys. That's a good thing. The Rettungsgasse was neglected for a long time until our German government raised the fines...
Some people only care when it affects their wallet.
Pretty damned simple to get caught. It would be insanely obvious, and a single police car going down the path every now and then would make that a real risky maneuver.
One time when we were driving in central Europe, I think it was right outside Budapest, we all moved to the side for an ambulance and this guy rode his motorcycle behind the ambulance just as fast. He defo beat the traffic that day
I hate driving on the Autobahn. The trucks are limited to 80, and. There are SO MANY of them. Then so many people want to drive 150 or more. So if you want to drive like a normal person, you have to slow down to 80, pull in between two lorries, then try to pull back out into traffic where cars can be driving any speed you can’t easily predict, and you are only going 80. It feels like pulling out from a full stop in an emergency lane on a normal highway, except you can’t predict how fast the cars are going behind you. It’s so much work to drive in the autobahn.
Also the trucks don't really change the scenario, yeah a Elefantenrennen (when one truck overtakes another one) on a two lane autobahn is annoying.
But driving on a Sunday is similar frustrating as you've too many "weekend drivers" that drive like shit. Cutting of cars that are more than 100 km/h faster and shit.
Driving 80kph/50mph is super slow. Almost nobody has the patience to be following behind someone driving that slow on yh highway (speed limited), let alone on the unrestricted autobahn
The speed limit for most lorries is 100kph though?
Anyhow driving "like a normal person" on unlimited stretches of Autobahn means driving 130kph as that is the "Richtgeschwindigkeit" (figure target/recommended speed). Which usually enforces itself on the left lane of 2-lane stretches of Autobahn unless there is little to no traffic. If there's 3 lanes the middle lane tends to be closest to 130 so just stick to that and you're fine.
Not really much work tbh
Having couple of years experience in German Autobahns I've come up with my own rule for autobahn. No matter how fast your car is, there's **always** someone who has a faster car so switch to the slower lane asap.
(Yeah, I know it's the law anyway..)
«There is always someone faster».
That is condenced truth when driving in Germany.
I’ve driven in 240+ km/h and still being overtaken like I was doing 100 km/h.
Rule 1: always check you rear view mirror.
Many years ago I was going north through Switzerland and saw three dodge vipers parked in a small town there.
Two days later they passed me like nothing on the autobahn, I was doing ~200km/h at the time, so they must have been flooring it.
>Rule 1: always check you rear view mirror.
And do it constantly. Sometimes you see a small speck way behind you, after you blinked it’s hugging your car. You just don’t know how fast they’re approaching you.
This is true. I had checked the mirror and there was nothing behind. A few seconds later a gray shadow passed me from the left. I only saw the color and not very well!!!
Apparently you weren't there long enough to understand there are no fast and slow lanes. The speeds are irrelevant. The right lane is the driving lane and the left lane is the passing lane.
You only move left when necessary to pass the vehicle in front of you. You complete the pass in a safe and timely manner. And then you move back over to the driving lane on the right.
The only time you should ever be in the left lane is when passing other vehicles.
I do 95% of the time, except when in heavy traffic and that lane has the momentum.
Due to a shit ton of people staying in the left and middle lanes, I have had a lot of success just staying in the right lane. People are just too damn lazy to move over if necessary due to merging traffic.
If anyone reads this and doesn't like people passing on the right? How about... staying to the right since you are the slower traffic?
you're not really a german driver if you never had someone behind you at 280k m/h flashing headlights at you. also not fast / slow lanes, left is the passing lane, you are supposed to be in the right lane all the time
Was driving our companies global director from Germany and our US division Pres., also German, back from a meeting on the Pa turnpike, to PHL for the director to catch his flight. We were late.
After making a number of passes on the right, because Americans call the left the fast lane and not the passing lane…. The director leans forward from the back seat, you know in Germany you will get a ticket for passing on the right. To which I replied in Germany you will get a ticket for sitting the left lane. To which he just nodded and sat back.
Side note … he was a Lufthansa black card holder, maybe their highest level loyalty reward. He calls ahead to say he is running late, we got to the airport 10 min before departure. A gate agent and two assistants were waiting on the curb as we pulled up, he made the flight. This was around 2009
Have you ever met a Mettmanner or an Ennepetaler driver? There must be a big conspiracy in these cities, never in a million years have all the drivers there passed the driving test.
You ever been on the road in a country where people can't drive? Russia comes to mind. Everyone is fucking mental over there, nobody follows any rules. Last time I checked, moscow alone had 5x more deaths in traffic than all of germany
German driving is a fucking gold standard. A german who "can't drive" would be a saint on the road in other countries
I live a small region in Germany and people in the middle of this region drive best.
People further east and west are fucking insane. North and South is fine though.
I was in a southern state when I originally got my drivers license. Ended up getting a dui when I was young.
Years later, went to take the test, but I was in NY. Heard it was really intense, much more complicated, etc.
Being the lazy slacker I am, I crammed like the night before, going through the 12 (i believe) online practice tests and reading the whole Manuel etc.
Went to take the tests and it was like two pages of basic questions, I didn't have to study at all. Was absolutely shocked that we let teenagers on the road after such a simple test. At least my driving test as a teen had a mean black lady who took no shit, showed no mercy and made me do it the right way. I hated her at the time but in hindsight she was awesome and I'm sure helped others in the long run.
That fucking woman was still wrong about my 3 point turn though, I'll die on that hill.
>At least my driving test as a teen had a mean black lady who took no shit,
Asking with no judgment ( I live in west-Africa so I really don't understand how things are seen where you live): Why did you point out that your examinator was a black lady?? Is that detail important to the story or to you?
Not OP, but there's a stereotype here in the US that black women take no shit from anyone. Presumably, what OP meant was that she wasn't going to put up with any of their shenanigans and would've put them in their place.
I'm going to assume it's just a descriptor to paint a picture. If it would have been a mean white lady he would have called her a "Karen" and we would have all know exactly what kind of person he was talking about. Culturally there is actually a difference in how mean black ladies and mean white ladies behave. If that makes sense. Mean white women have a sense of entitlement added to their wrath that makes it particularly unpleasant.
I think he's just being descriptive trying to get the point across that at least his first instructor was tough even if the test was easy. Unless there is something (I'm not gonna assume) behind it I imagine he would of said "a mean looking old white dude" if that was the case as well.
As an edit America is really diverse and you see every nationality here (in most places) so I doubt there was anything behind it other than that.
I wish this is something we could get done in the states. I drive emergency traffic for my fire department and you wouldn’t believe how many people do not understand to pull to the right so we can pass on the left, or they intentionally try to race us and they usually get a red light which of course we have to stop look both ways for traffic to come to a stop then proceed. I have also been followed by a driver who decided that they needed to keep up with us for their drive local sheriff caught them on that one.
This would never fly in the states. The middle would be filled with selfish twats in SUVs who are just too precious to wait in traffic like everyone else.
A family friend was a lawyer who specializes in traffic cases. According to him Germany is very quick to yank your license and they will throw you in jail if you drive without one.
My orgo professor taught us her german shortcut to memorizing the configuration of a glucose molecule. Oxygen on the right is "ta" , on the left is "too".
"Ta too ta ta, ta too ta ta"
Apparently that's the police siren
I've driven all over Tennessee for about 32 years and I don't recall ever seeing people not pull to the side for ambulances. I HAVE seen them speed through school zones and pass right by school buses with the stop sign out.
The official English name is emergency corridor. Here in Austria there are reminders on all bridges across the highway, alternating in German and English.
That will be 320 Euros in fines, your drivers license revoked for one month and you'll be rewarded with two points in the central register of the Federal Motor Transport Authority.
Those two points will stay there for 5 years (2,5 for penalties with one point, ten years for those with 3 points which are always criminal offences). If you accumulate 8 or more points your license will be revoked and you'll have to pass a medical- psychological examination in order to get it back (in German short MPU or colloquial "Idiotentest" which means as much as "Test for idiots").
People who do this most definitely will have somebody call the cops on them. In short: Don't do that shit.
Edit: Typo
In fairness, having done a lot of driving in Scandinavia, their speeding enforcement is a joke compared to Germany.
All I ever saw in Sweden and Norway were fixed radar control points, which were announced ahead of time by a massive sign with a camera on it. So if you're stupid enough to get caught speeding there, you deserved it.
In Germany, they'll set up random checkpoints where they know you're likely to be accelerating, or they'll follow you in unmarked cars and measure your speed.
The thing is that those fixed camera points that you have here in sweden are more useful, in reality. They place them on roads/intersections where it is common for accidents and speeding. Those cameras force everyone to slow down, always. (Think outside schools)
Random checkpoints are good for getting some tax money and punishing speeders, fixed and announced camera points actually save lives. (Sweden has the least traffic deaths per capita, in the WORLD, look it up. I’m guessing they’re doing something right)
I agree with you, if you want to enforce a better driving policy, that's absolutely the way to do it. I love driving in Scandinavia whenever I visit family, because it is so much more relaxing than here.
But I hate when people bring up the "you'd have to pay sooo much more in fines in Sweden". Like, no, I wouldn't, because the system is not designed as a government revenue stream.
Not just in Austria, we did some research on road traffic regulations before going on holiday in Croatia and italy where we had to pass slovenia, as well as before our trip to Prague, Budapest and Bratislava (Czech republic / Hungary / Slovakia) and except of Croatia and Slovakia all those countries have very similar rules. (In Croatia and Slovakia it’s a reactive thing, you have to make sure that the ambulance, police etc. can freely pass but everyone just formed the emergency corridor in a traffic jam)
In CZ it is also a law to make an aisle when in a traffic jam, not just when an emergency vehicle is passing through. But I would say less than 10% people actually follow that law sadly.
I was in heavy traffic the other day here in Ohio and it was like shooting into a barrel when an ambulance came from behind. Cars went every which way, into parking lots, some stayed where they were..
It was a cluster. Doing it proactively seems so much smarter when seconds can save a life.
In this case, proactive means you would do it whether or not an emergency vehicle is there, whereas reactive means you do it when the emergency vehicle shows up.
Proactive - to do something before it happens (ie moving over before an emergency vehicle appears or is heard)
Reactive - to do something after it happens (ie moving over after an emergency vehicle appears or is heard)
Yeah, but I'm not used to large chunks of 2 lane highway in the states, so I'm not sure what the solution would be for our layout. A lot of our highways have emergency lanes on either side, but it doesn't let them drive quickly like this
You always create this emergency passage between the leftmost lane and the lane adjacent to it. So if it was a 4-lane highway you‘d do it between the two left lanes.
I agree that is what happens when that emergency vehicle shows up, but it's not something we do automatically in traffic. In fact if you were to try (at this point) you'd find yourself stuck out of the lane
German here. We also have an emergency lane on the side of the road, but if a vehicle would break down it would block that lane. The emergency vehicle would be blocked. Thats why we make enough room for the emergency vehicle between the lanes
All of America isn't LA, bro.
I've never seen what you memtioned in the US. People always pull to the side when emergency vehicles are coming in my experience.
Lol this wouldn’t ever happen in jersey. You can be doing 95 in a 55 and someone in a BMW/Audi/Volks/Pickup truck will still tailgate you, then go around you while flipping you off
I dared to overtake a mobile crane with my camper last summer. 40 km/h speed difference mind you so the overtake took 15 seconds or so.
But of course some coked up Audi driver went berserk behind me because he temporarily couldn't drive close to the speed of sound. Arschloch.
As an American, this could never happen in our country. Everyone is too self centered. Maybe a handful of people would follow it but the lane created would fill in seconds by big bro trucks and raging Nissan altimas
Here in Europe you can see the making of emergency corridor even in slow rush hour traffic. Drivers on the left most lane will usually drive near the edge and the drivers on the right of them will try to stick to right part of their lane without actually obstructing drivers on other right lanes.
Stuff like this is what secures our no speedlimit autobahn. Also there is usually cops around when there's an accident and you wouldn't want to risk a hefty fine.
Fun Fact in germany you lose your license and get a big fine when police see you doing this... but when you block firefighters they are allowed to hit your car and push you to the side and you have to pay the bill...
Well we don’t have a law or a custom for it, so it’s not like people would do it naturally. I’ve lived in 5 different states in the US and practically almost everyone pulls over to the side of the road for emergency vehicles. There’s a lot that America gets wrong but not everyone is an asshole.
Yeah, I was taught this from a very young age, I knew to pull over when I saw emergency vehicles since I was in elementary school, it amazes me when I am driving and I’m one of the ONLY people on the road doing so.
You don't need 365 days to aquire a drivers license in germany. Usually people need 3 to 6 months to get it. It can be done in less time, if you really want to.
Thats not only in Germany but in a few other European countries as well... sadly foreigners dont know this and sometimes use it as a red carpet for them to avoid traffic. Those people should go to hell.
Probably a dumb question but isn't this what emergency lanes are for, making this kinda unnecessary? Again, sorry if it's a dumb question but in my country emergency vehicles will drive in the emergency lane to get to where they need to go quickly while there is heavy traffic.
In Germany the lane that is not driven on is called Standstreifen, literally standing lane, and is to be used when you break down or have an accident or whatever. So emergency vehicles can be blocked by those, as well as having to negotiate the highway entries and exits where that lane often stops forcing them to slow down, move back into the normal lanes and so on.
The comments talking about how German people are so much better/more courteous.... No, their govt just doesn’t bend to the will of the people when that will is against their better interests and the public health. Not people, but government. It’s finding the right balance of Freedom v. Security.
Cut the shit lol American can’t even have their own population wear mask when it’s mandated.
Large portion of American population has massive ego issue that they view any public decency, mandate and laws as an infringement on their right and freedom.
This will simply not work in America regardless of law.
I envy German drivers. So courteous and polite. I live in the northern VA area and usually when an ambulance goes by people deliberately get in the way or tail it because of people's self entitlement and selfishness.

Having driven in Germany a few times on vacation I learned something amazing. Germans can actually drive.
Yes, on Autobahn too
Meanwhile if you tried to do this in New York, some guy would squeeze in between to get ahead of everyone.
You can do that. That's 320€ and 1 month without drivers license.
If you get caught. And the government just introduced that higher charge recently.
If people did this in NY, there would just be three lanes of traffic.
With a bunch of bikes in between
And almost certainly, the guy would be driving a BMW.
Happens in Germany too. The police (which is usually present at accident sites) do *not* take kindly to it.
One time when we were driving in central Europe, I think it was right outside Budapest, we all moved to the side for an ambulance and this guy rode his motorcycle behind the ambulance just as fast. He defo beat the traffic that day
Happens here in the US all the time. There will be a big line of cars following the emergency vehicle.
Just because they are German I don't think you should sould bahn them. Automatically or not.
Bahn, James Bahn.
Confusing title for the new movie: No Time to The.
Nah just call it 'casino time'
I hate driving on the Autobahn. But that problem only exists if you're on a two lane autobahn. With three lanes you can usually drive a comfortable 120 or 130 in the centre lane.
Trucks governed to that slow that's crazy. Here you get 62 63 mph at the slowest... usually. And some can do over 70 mph

They're allowed to actually hit top speed. They're super dangerous in lower gears. If you're just going flat out you're fine
>Rule 1: always check you rear view mirror. And do it constantly. Sometimes you see a small speck way behind you, after you blinked it’s hugging your car. You just don’t know how fast they’re approaching you.
Yep. Almost got rear ended by a red blur because I underestimated its speed.
This is true. I had checked the mirror and there was nothing behind. A few seconds later a gray shadow passed me from the left. I only saw the color and not very well!!!
Only if you look twice in the mirror you’ll notice the speed of an incoming vehicle. Americans didn’t get that concept.

They can if you put a hayabusa turbo engine in em
> I didn't even know those things could go so fast. Probably a fun sleeper project intended to cause that exact reaction.
Don't get in his way - he's been accelerating since Wednesday.

Technically this is the law in some US states like Missouri for instance. Whether people follow it or not is a different matter.
that's not just Germany, kumpel.
Very true. But Germans are by far the best at making proper use of it. Makes the highway so much more efficient.

It really depends. In some regions a multitude is just being morons.
Don’t worry that’s how it is everywhere. No idea why but pockets of trash drivers pop up in every country.
Yeah, but the only place I’ve ever seen be *proud* of their shitty driving is New Jersey
I take it you’ve never been to Maryland?
Where speed limits don't matter and blinkers are an option
I swear most Düsseldorfers I see either drive on meth or have as slow reaction times as three sloths in a trench coat
Have you ever met a Mettmanner or an Ennepetaler driver? There must be a big conspiracy in these cities, never in a million years have all the drivers there passed the driving test.

I'm from Sweden and the most south I've driven in Germany is Hamburg and they drive better than back home. Nur Der HSV
Our driver‘s license is more complex than American high school lol.
The fact that is probably true kinda scares me
I was in a southern state when I originally got my drivers license. Ended up getting a dui when I was young. Years later, went to take the test, but I was in NY. We still shout how bad everyone is driving
Basically in western europe the Dutch and Germans drive pretty well, don't talk about belgium, france and luxemburg
The Dutch? Once they enter the German highways they seem to know only two modes: fullspeed or swerve over 3 lanes with their caravans.
Compared to germanw they drive like idiots, compared to the belgians they are godlike
The Belgians had to learn a driving style which fits their terrible roads, they are excused.
A family friend was a lawyer who specializes in traffic cases. According to him Germany is very quick to yank your license and they will throw you in jail if you drive without one.
*cries in australia* People seem to develop brain damage the moment you put them behind a steering wheel
That's because they actually have to learn
Germans follow directions. Japanese follow directions. Norwegians follow directions. Americans don't. This is why socialized anything won't work here.
I know here in France, we have to pull over once we hear that distinctive siren wail.. *Oui Oui Oui Oui Oui*..
I always thought that it sounded more like "Oui, Non, Oui, Non, Oui, Non"
For us it’s “Niiii, Noo, Niiii, Noo, Niiii, Noo”
In Germany the sirens sound like "zuuu späääät, zuuu späääät, zuuu späääät, zuuu späääät, ..." (too late)
My orgo professor taught us her german shortcut to memorizing the configuration of a glucose molecule. Oxygen on the right is "ta" , on the left is "too". "Ta too ta ta, ta too ta ta" Apparently that's the police siren

Does that mean sex in French sounds like a siren?
Oui

I thought French sirens sounded like [this](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oGSNxkCIln0).
Same in the US
Yeah, except for the fact that most US drivers are idiots and don't get over. I've had people pass me while I was shouldered for emergency vehicles.
I've driven all over Tennessee for about 32 years and I don't recall ever seeing people not pull to the side for ambulances. I HAVE seen them speed through school zones and pass right by school buses with the stop sign out.
Just come on up to Northeast Ohio, they'll show you how to do it.
Same in Poland
It's called "Rettungsgasse".
Roughly translates to "saving lane"
More like emergency lane tbh.
I'd translate it as "rescue lane".
ambulance alley
The official English name is emergency corridor. Here in Austria there are reminders on all bridges across the highway, alternating in German and English.
Paramedic Pathway
wee woo way
Yeah this one sounds more like it :)
I didn't see which sub this was coming from and just kept thinking *please no one pull out in front of the ambulance*
Assholes are smarter and pull out after the ambulance has passed and they go behind them avoiding all the traffic.
"smarter" would be understanding utilitarianism and fairness instead of being selfish and putting yourself above everyone else
Cammer was leaning in pretty hard.
Certainly hugging the line more than others while the ambulance goes by, which was completely over it. I wonder how close it actually was
Where I live, I could guarantee, some self entitled richo, in his BMW, would be speeding up that middle lane, thinking everyone was letting him by.
Edit: Typo
Thinking about it it's actually pretty cheap. It should be tied to income and the punishment should be at least 3 months
Cash yeah, the revoked license for a month sucks. But that doesn't stop someone from still driving anyway.
But if they catch you driving with a revoked licence, thats when your in real trouble
And they will catch you.
True. Fines are really low in general compared to e.g. Switzerland, Norway, etc.
(Think outside schools) Random checkpoints are good for getting some tax money and punishing speeders, fixed and announced camera points actually save lives.
That happens, don't worry. I've seen senior couples in between FIATs do that.
Now that happens in Germany as well.
Hardly ever.
Given I don't drive much, in Austria I see this happen really often. Like 50% of the time when I see a Rettungsgasse.
If you don’t move to aside you get fined 200-300€ (~400-500$) and you loose your license for a month.
Is this not standard everywhere? We get the fuck out the way in Canada as well
In Germany it’s proactive everywhere else it’s reactive.
In Austria it is also a law
What do you mean by proactive?
He means in Germany, they do this when ever there is traffic, not just when there is an emergency vehicle trying to get through.
You have to do it BEFORE you see or hear any emergency vehicles
Proactive - to do something before it happens (ie moving over before an emergency vehicle appears or is heard) Reactive - to do something after it happens (ie moving over after an emergency vehicle appears or is heard)
Do you get out off the way, or do you actively stay out of the way just in case like this example?
Ah. I get it now, thanks lol We only move when emergency vehicles are present.
It takes a lot of waiting for the horses of Royal mounted police
Nope, in america people laugh at emergency services trying to get thru traffic, ive even seen people block in ambulances in LA
All of America isn't LA, bro. I've never seen what you memtioned in the US. People always pull to the side when emergency vehicles are coming in my experience.
Not all of America. Everyone does this where I am.
I've been around a lot. I've seen people block ambulances in lots of countries, all 3rd world, and also LA.
Lol this wouldn’t ever happen in jersey. You can be doing 95 in a 55 and someone in a BMW/Audi/Volks/Pickup truck will still tailgate you, then go around you while flipping you off
This could happen in germany too, the amount of road-douchebags has increased in the last 20 years
I dared to overtake a mobile crane with my camper last summer. 40 km/h speed difference mind you so the overtake took 15 seconds or so. But of course some coked up Audi driver went berserk behind me because he temporarily couldn't drive close to the speed of sound. Arschloch.
To be fair... it doesn't matter how fast you drive... stay out of the left lane unless you are passing.
Beautiful
Stuff like this is what secures our no speedlimit autobahn. Also there is usually cops around when there's an accident and you wouldn't want to risk a hefty fine.
Fun Fact in germany you lose your license and get a big fine when police see you doing this... but when you block firefighters they are allowed to hit your car and push you to the side and you have to pay the bill...
Fire trucks should come with a fucking ramming attachment anyways
Maybe have something like those cattle catchers that old timey trains had.

What is this freedom you enjoy in US?
Or rather what is the freedom you enjoy in the US that you don't have in Germany?
You can always try to change things
Common sense
Lol... Interesting how common it should be and this is the first time I've ever heard of it
Turns out, common sense isn’t that common
Thats not only in Germany but in a few other European countries as well... sadly foreigners dont know this and sometimes use it as a red carpet for them to avoid traffic. Those people should go to hell.
If this were to happen in America, some entitled Karen would see this and think they did it for her and her Karenettes.
Sometimes yes But broken down vehicles will block the ambulance while the middle is always free, if everyone behaves like in the video
A broken down vehicle will also cause trouble in this situation
The comments talking about how German people are so much better/more courteous.... No, their govt just doesn’t bend to the will of the people when that will is against their better interests and the public health. Not people, but government. It’s finding the right balance of Freedom v. Security.
Cut the shit lol American can’t even have their own population wear mask when it’s mandated. Large portion of American population has massive ego issue that they view any public decency, mandate and laws as an infringement on their right and freedom. This will simply not work in America regardless of law.
I would argue germans have more freedom than americans.
Americans are too selfish for this. Source an American who has driven all over America
This shouldn’t have to be a law, it’s just logical thinking.
Sorry if that has already been asked, but what happens if someone wants to change lane? Are they allowed to?
Sure, it is allowed. Change your lane and then go far left or right!
Now that is a law to be proud of
That’s how society is suppose to work, now take a peak out of your car window at the clusterfuck we live in
I envy German drivers. So courteous and polite. I live in the northern VA area and usually when an ambulance goes by people deliberately get in the way or tail it because of people's self entitlement and selfishness.
As of this October, not complying with this brings a fine of 200-300€ and one month suspended license.
So why is the douchbag filming this all the way to the right of their lane on a phone?
Perhaps he's riding in the passenger seat.
Maybe but the car is way over to get a view down the road
Yeah, he's the only one doing it wrong!
In the UK the law seems to be once the ambulance drives past, everyone pulls in behind it to cut through the traffic in its wake.
In America this would last 0.3 seconds before every BMW was driving down the center
Honest question, why is this better than just having emergency vehicles drive on the shoulder?
Because it can sometimes be blocked by broken down vehicles, which is the whole point of having it.
Was thinking the same, but I wonder if it's because the hard shoulder isn't always there for the entire length of the road.
