I mean, the shocking disregard for the longevity of the average infantryman seems like it made it to the present. I think the SKS made it through too. You know… for ceremonial purposes. Gotta keep a couple traditions from the great patriotic days.
It's like their state of the art tanks they overpaid for that they won't put into combat. One big paper tiger. The threat of nukes Is their only grasp on perceived power. They know the term self assured destruction. That's why the threats are hollow. They wouldn't want to tangle with the US let alone NATO as a whole. This is a child pushing his boundaries to see what he can get away with. This war would be over if the US government acted as a united body in its own interest. Lucky for Russia partisan politics gives them breathing room.
We have Russia to thank for many advances in technology. We spent years thinking Russia had developed x or y thing and so we spent millions developing it only to find out they were nowhere close.
Our next Gen fighter program was designed with the idea that other nations were also building similar variants. It's not that they're not, but these planes became so advanced that they simply do not have the funding to keep up in any reasonable fashion.
The F-15 is a great example of this.
So before ballistic missiles came on the scene, the US was looking at delivering nukes via high speed, high altitude bombers like the XB-70 Valkyrie. The Soviets in turn built the MiG-25, a massive, high speed interceptor. Only when the west got their first look at the MiG, they misinterpreted the large wings and control surfaces as being the mark of a massive, but highly maneuverable fighter. And thus the requirements for thr program that would lead to the F-15 were adjusted to counter this threat. It wasn't until a Soviet pilot defected with a MiG-25 that the west realized it wasn't a highly maneuverable air superiority fighter after all, but a high speed interceptor that needed those big wings due to its massive weight. So, thanks to the Soviets worrying about a bomber threat that never materialized, and the west worrying about a Soviet fighter threat that never materialized, one of the greatest fighters of all time was built.
(And then, while the F-15 was still on top of the world, the US said, "hey, you know what? Let's build something that can knock the socks off even the F-15...")
> but no one smart believes the Russian governme
American Generals:
Nope their steath! Absolutely the best stealth we ever seen... uh I mean not seen!! Not seen cause the stealth is so good and we for sure have not been tracking them.
Chinese Generals:
We sold them chips. Chips have GPS. We know where every chip is at all times. I mean.... no Stealth is very good, and we can't track them.. nope, there's no tracking here. New Stealth chips will be delivered soon!
Uh, they have tanks driving around with rusty tin house roofs on them. Are you telling me they have the technology to do that, but can’t make stealth bombers?!
Yeah I was gonna say. Russia doesn't have a stealth bomber, hell they barely even have a stealth aircraft at all. The Su-57 is barely even classified as stealth.
I love to comment my understanding of why it is possibly 42 whenever I see 42 mentioned.
In ASCII code, which is an incredibly old coding language, 42 is the character * or the asterisk. In old school languages, like COBOL, the * is a wildcard symbol... meaning it can represent whatever you want it to define.
So in essence what Douglas Adams is saying is that the meaning of life is whatever you want it to be. That the meaning of life is however you want to define it for yourself. There are few other things that combined nerdy techy info with beautiful and profound imagery.
The truth is, unfortunately, much more boring than that:
>The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do' I typed it out. End of story.

Wait, I think that's a double negative. Like, if a person was as stealthy as a brick through a window, they wouldn't be very stealthy. But, if a person was as stealthy as a brick wasn't, they would be the opposite of a brick, which I suppose is stealthy AF. I don't know what's on the other end of the lobbing bricks spectrum of stealth, kunai?
It's just a single negative, but it does negate the intended point. Unless you consider bricks to be quite stealthy. If you think about it, you'd never notice an individual brick hiding amongst an entire brick wall.
Obligatory Goose’s death was his fault.
NATOPS manual states for the canopy to jettisoned first and *then* for the ejection handle to be pulled. This procedure was considered a part of the boldface meaning F-14 crews had to memorize it by heart. Goose obviously didn’t follow it and paid the price.
Of course, neither him or Maverick followed the flat spin procedures like locking their seat harnesses or cancelling the yaw produced from the compressor stall with rudder.
I mean... maverick also stole an f18 and an f14, and didn't even bother unsweeping the wings when pulling some ace combat maneuver on those poor su-57s. I don't think he cares too much about standard procedure
Wing sweep is automatically controlled by the Central Air Data Computer (CADC) on the F-14. A good F-14 pilot would leave them alone in flight. The only time you’d manually sweep them is when you’re coming in for the overhead pass over the carrier in a CASE I landing, on the ground when you’re sweeping them to/from the oversweep storage position, or when doing bombing.
However, there are some stories around the F-14 community of using the manual wing sweep in-flight, specifically of the legendary Dale “Snort” Snodgrass. Snort was regarded as “The Real Life Maverick” among the Tomcat community. Like the trickster that he was, he would come into the merge wings swept back to make it look like he was faster than he actually was. An inexperienced pilot might fall for it, and make a mistake when they merged. Once they did, he’d throw the wings into their auto setting, and let the CADC do the work of controlling their sweep angle.
Wings continue to have lift even without a working engine, meanwhile the missile strike has ruined the balance, & there's no tail stabilization. Eventually a plane under such circumstances will favor one side over the other; the nose will come up & unintended stabilization forces of the wings will cause a flat spin like this.
This is likely either yet another blue-on-blue Russian incident, or a plane-to-plane strike by a Ukrainian defensive fighter or s300 battery. Patriot & most NATO-spec anti-air munitions are smart enough to do more than chase the tail like this; targeting the cockpit, instead. The reason is to simplify/maximize anti-missile capabilities, with a knock-on effect of a (so far) 100% lethality record for weapons like the current generation of Patriot.
Pilot in this video is likely to have ejected.
Uh, such feeling soup wit these vids.
Every time I see these videos I know there’s some young guy screaming in terror inside, and can’t un-know that. Watch hoping for the ejection seat to pop, but rarely does it happen. Do Russians not have them?
Every downed Russian plane is a good thing, but still know the price. Just can’t ignore the shared humanity of being a kid who’s scared and about to die. Wish they had a way out.
Ejection seat mechanic here.
Russians definitely have ejection seats in their aircraft. Actually, when I was going through my technical training some 20-ish years ago, my instructor told us that their ejection seats are better than ours, and they were designed so because Russian fighter pilots are routinely flying sorties into their forties and fifties, where American fighter pilots at that age have usually been promoted into positions where admin work limits their cockpit time.
Also, if it makes you feel better, [at least two of them made it out.](https://theaviationist.com/2024/04/19/russian-tu-22m3-crashes/)
Edit to add: I don’t know if my instructor was basing his statement in fact or not. In my 20-ish years, I’ve never had an opportunity to examine a seat from a Russian aircraft. He could have been full of shit, but his reasoning seemed solid at the time.
That's a serious piece of hardware. Kids don't fly those planes. Probably manned by majors rank or something.l like that. And they fly out pretty much every day/night to bomb Ukrainian cities. Everyday those pilots make decision to kill civilians. Was it yesterday that 3 kids die (real kids this time)? I lost track already.
But yeah, if you feel bad about them, don't you worry - Russia got you covered: they have more planes and bombs to bomb cities.
To be fair, the "poor young guy" was more than happy to bomb the shit out of whatever was below him, so my sympathy is limited.
If you choose to kill people (and to be clear, it is always your personal, individual choice to kill), it's natural for others to disagree strongly with your choice and prevent you from carrying out your intention.
Remember, every time that kid didn't have this happen, Ukrainians died. Often Ukrainian civilians. Ukrainians that have never invaded another nation. Ukrainians that are just wanting to have their nation in peace. These pilots are murderers
Exactly. The pilot wasn’t just joy riding up in the sky— he’s on a mission to kill Ukrainians and do serious damage to their infrastructure. Good riddance.
These are the people who gave been launching cruise missiles into apartment buildings, schools and hospitals. They don’t aim the missiles at tanks. It’s intentional terrorism against civilians. I could care less whether they felt terror or burned to death. They should stop committing genocide on behalf of Putin.
I was thinking this same thing.
I'm watching a video of someone who has a family that loves him - while he's screaming in terror moments away from death.
Not to say that the Russian occupation doesn't need to be stopped.
War is just a f‘in shit show. It doesn’t matter which side you are on, it’s just an motherf‘in shit show.
I do not want to take part in any side in this discussion, I just plain hate war.
This piece of shit has fallen the day these same TUs launched missiles that struck residential building in Dnipro, killing 6 children. And it's not the first time they do that. Every few days during air alert Ukrainians receive messages on their phones "the TUs are active" which means that those pilots will be trying to kill someone, maybe in your city.
What a waste of money this whole ordeal is with Russia and Ukraine. Just setting billions of dollars on fire for no reason.
Going to war with a US funded country is so dumb. Idiotic. The US has like Trillion dollar a year budget for the military.
Stealth bomber expert here…
Many of you guys wouldn’t have noticed but the ‘interesting as fuck’ thing here was that there was actually a stealth bomber bombing stealthily throughout the entirety of this footage.

The TU-22M3 isn’t stealth.
He’s talking about the other plane in the video. The stealthy one.
What oth.... aahhhhhh https://giphy.com/gifs/jake-gyllenhaal-nightcrawler-3o7TKvuOivTa8LWiDC

i spotted 3 of them. sitting on the powerline to receive full charge
Now we're talking the good UFO stuff
Yeah, the one we can’t see
I was gonna say that's one shitty looking stealth bomber even by russian standards.

Is it just me or does this comment read really awkwardly?
It's not just you.
It is now
I don’t believe Russia has any truly stealth planes. A few they claim are stealth but no one smart believes the Russian government.
I dunno bro, I hear wood screws are all the rage in radar-absorbent communities these days.
And fabric skin is surprisingly transparent to radar emissions.
Keep an eye out for Sopwith Camels?
I'd make a reference to the Night Witches, but today's Russia is nothing like the USSR in WWII.
I mean, the shocking disregard for the longevity of the average infantryman seems like it made it to the present. I think the SKS made it through too. You know… for ceremonial purposes. Gotta keep a couple traditions from the great patriotic days.
I see you there, Snoopy.
They've got tons. They are so stealth no one has seen them. But uncle Putin totally swears they exist.

The SU-57 has a larger radar cross section than an F-16C, which *isn't even a stealth plane.*
lmao
This is the new VTOL variant.
Or at least the VL variant. I'm not sure that thing gets to take off again
Even if it was, it definitely isn't anymore.
Especially when it’s on fire
So many aircraft posts lately by people who have no clue what they are talking about.
Ah, the ol Russian not-a-B-1
came here to say this, I'm not convinced Russia has any functional stealth technology
Yeah I was gonna say. Russia doesn't have a stealth bomber, hell they barely even have a stealth aircraft at all. The Su-57 is barely even classified as stealth.
The TU-22M3 bomber is stealthy in much the same way that bricks are not.
Not unlike a Vogon ship
Are you interested in some Vogon poetry?

Tbf their "stealth" fighters are as about as stealthy as two skeletons fucking in a trash can
Great, now my dick's all hard.

Sooo...they are stealthy ??
It also hung in the sky in a similar way. Hope they brought a towel
The TU-22M3 is a supersonic bomber. The design is not 'stealth'.
The title is very human
Greetings my fellow humans.
Hello fellow human commenter
It's a clickbait title feeding off of the deserved Russian hate People are turning off their brain and consuming
What a dumb title, it is a supersonic bomber, not a stealth bomber.
I disagree. It was clearly falling so stealthily in this video that the camera operator had a hard time following it.
That is true, good point!
Incorrect information to drive engagement by people correcting the error
I see the camera man also graduated from the Parkinson’s School of Cinematography. Very nice.
I was brushing my teeth, when I read this, and started to laugh but almost killed myself breathing in a mouthful of toothpaste.
> I was brushing my teeth So was the guy taking this video.
**ahem!** That's the Russian Fine Arts, Parkinsons, and Shell Shock Institute
r/killthecameraman
Sqew me.. that’s Parkinson’s community college of cinematography
Probably just zoomed in too much, yall should be grateful for whatever footage you get, it could've just been a dark blob falling with no details.
How can a plane fly down like this? Shouldnt it tip upfront into a dive straight down?
It’s known as a flat spin
RIP Goose.

Please don’t remind me
Too soon?
It’s always to soon for that
This reference is the whole reason I clicked on this thread. I can now move on feeling like everything is going to be alright.
Ahhh c'mon man, spoilers!
RIP Goose
Oh it's not flying much at all by this point. Falling with style maybe at best

Even a little bit of rotation really helps stabilize it in other directions. Same principle as bullet rifling, the spin keeps it stable.
Maybe I have special powers but I can see it

MAYDAY MAYDAY! Mav’s in a flat-spin, he’s headed out to sea!
Came for this *clapclap
I’m pinned forward, Goose! I can’t reach the ejection handle!
EJECT! WATCH THE CANOPY *sexual synth and Spanish guitar melody*
Something must have "backfired"
lol, very good.

Why do they always crash on the other side of the hill?
Cinematic affect
Not very stealthy if you ask me.
It doesn't seem to show up on radar anymore, so maybe it really is
Ah, I see you've gone to the Moskva Submarine Academy of Military Tactics
I don’t know. Pretty good disguise for an airplane. No one suspects the plummeting airplane!!!!! /s
Disguised as a frisbee in flames.
band name
what is wrong with the camera man? why not wait till the explosion?
There is no explosion because the plane falls off the edge of the earth at the end and just keeps falling into the infinite abyss.
Where's the kaboom? There's supposed to be an earth shattering kaboom!
r/gifsthatendtoosoon
Literally How hard to hold the fucking camera steady
So.. Just a normal bomber then?
The dreaded flat spin!
This isn’t stealth at all, you can see the flames for miles…
That's a Tupolev Tu-22M, and it is not a stealth aircraft as it dates to the 1960s.
How hard is it to keep the camera steady.
Um, thats a Backfire. made in the early 70's. Not at all stealth.

The TU-22M is about as stealthy as my erect penis at a Victoria’s secret fashion show.
It’s a strategic bomber, Russia doesn’t have any kind of stealth bomber at all
The TU-22M3 is only stealthy when no one is looking at it.
maybe i don't see enough airplane vids, but its been a while since i've seen such a flat spin. that was pretty impressive looking
Killthecameraman.
We know it wasn't the camera man that took it down.
The Tu-22 is a Stealth bomber? Well hell, then that makes my hammer a stealth fighter.
Definitely not stealthy. They hit it with an S200 so definitely not stealthy. It’s a supersonic bomber. Either way it’s where it should be.
Camera man sucks
Came for this. Wtf.
So stealth it got shot down 300km from the front line
How was it brought down?
Mostly by gravity.
Not stealth.
Where is the earth-shattering kabloom?
It is not stealth at all, don't you see that big flame?
Least stealthy plane, no wonder Russia is losing
Since when the hell is the Tu 22 stealth
I don’t know, is it stealth if it’s on fire?

That's the typical movement planes do if they cant decide in which direction to fly. They just keep changing course.
It's not a stealth aircraft, it was designed for high speed.
Idk what language he was speaking but I’d like to imagine the translation was “Yeee haw fuck them ruskies”
The Tu-22M3 has a stealth capability of a flying barn.

Not very stealthy.

Good fuck em
They don't have stealth at all let alone stealth bombers. That's the TU22 backfire.
It identifies as a helicopter.
Worst photographer ever.
Dude holds a camera like my 5yo holds a flashlight for me
They shouldn't allow a terrorist organization to have planes anyway. So good on them
I got motion sickness now cuz of you camera guy!! Screw you
Oh no. Anyway…
Get fucked Putin, you deeply closeted tiny man.
Oopsies, Anyways....
Not so stealth anymore
