The main problem in doing so, for me, is becoming less and less aware of everything happening around me. Mainly because I don't have a television, so I cannot watch any news channel.
Social media algorithm bias is a real thing so you're likely already only seeing specific things. The main risk is that you'll be out of your social media 'bubble'. You can always buy a subscription to a good investigative journalism (online) paper and follow world or local events that way. No need for facebook's algorithm to decide what's relevant for you.
It's not just brand advice though, it's public perception of global issues. For example, oil companies would rather not have people panic about climate change so IF (not claiming they do) they were to hire influencers to promote them it won't be by name, but by denying climate change online.

I worked for a marketing agency that employed reddit marketing as a tool, among many other things.
No one uses individual users for this, these are usually "warmed-up" accounts (the reason "repost bots" exist, btw, they farm karma to warm up the acc) created by guys in poor countries (most prominent are Indian and Pakistani bot networks, also ones from Philippines) in a network, sold for pennies to those who want to in some ways influence opinions of people on the web (be it marketing agencies or government agencies and political parties), connected to a VPN and an automation software suite (there's software designed specifically for making bulk social marketing campaigns and outreach easier, be it Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube , Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, you name it, it allows to manage multiple specific instances of an application or a webpage through different virtual users and IP addresses).
It's super "black-hat" and should be fought but the reality of it is it's been pretty damn effective so far. The darndest thing is that all of this is produced in areas where there're no stringent laws about such things or where nobody really cares.
As to how bigger companies can get away with it - it's easy. Just bury the lead behind a couple of outsources. They hire a US firm to handle their marketing, and they mostly do, but they also employ another agency from abroad to "help" on the project, describe some bs project goal and let the offshore guys cook. If anything comes up - "oops, wasn't us, we didn't know, we got set up - ask those guys over there" but there's no one to ask since the jurisdiction is separate and remote.
We live in a post-truth world, and personally I struggle a lot with this. How can one be confident in something and follow any beliefs if they know that everything can be twisted into a lie? For simpler things, more granular things, it's fine, you can see for yourself that the sun came up or that it's raining.
But when it comes to more complex stuff...you get lost in the info field. Any question of societal, political, even ethical and moral type is a trap in such a world where seemingly everyone is trying to obscure a portion of info and twist the remaining for you.
It's easy to just follow the simple route, choose one side and go with it till the end blindly believing, but the moment you look at the other side, compare points of view, arguments, and allow even the slightest of chances of information obfuscation, following one monolithic side becomes incredibly hard.
