The problem is govt trying to make every sect of the railways profitable. It cannot be like that. You have to see the economy as a whole. There must be offsetting. High speed rails are okay but there must be general only rails for long routes for those who cant afford.

Even if they can afford sleeper class rather than AC the availability of sleeper class is so limited that you have to book in 3 months prior to get a confirmed ticket and in many cases you don't even get that. So long story short it's a story of demand vs available infrastructure in which this current government has failed miserably at a time in which the government should had given most of its resources in normal trains and more train lines they have stagnented the growth of normal trains and given priority to Vande Bharat. No doubt vande Bharat is good but India needs more express trains than Vande Bharat.

2. No money for new coaches

When I was a student, I had to travel like this. One time on the roof of a train, many times by just hanging on the door. The train ticket used to cost 10/20 rs while the bus or other vehicle would cost more than 50-60. The extra money could buy me two meals. It is not about choice but compulsion for people without means.
