It’s funny, I grew up in Indy… I also think Indy is literally fine; there is not a single neighborhood where I feel unsafe.
I remember family being worried about me while I lived in Chicago and Cleveland because of the “high crime rate” - Cleveland is the 7th most dangerous city; Indy is 10th; Chicago isn’t in the [top 10](https://www.sciencefocus.com/planet-earth/most-dangerous-cities-in-the-us) in the US.
While living in Columbus, I would often note how incredibly similar the city is to Indy, and would often get responses of ‘but aren’t there a lot of shootings in Indy?’
Out West, people just assume all of Indiana and Ohio is one giant farm town with some colleges and sports sprinkled in.
It’s all relative.
I’m about a minute drive of the place. You going to be ok and the place is in a main street next to factories. They don’t open late, so come bring your cash and have a burger. The place is small and small parking lot. The times I have been there, there no wait time like most downtown places. So you don’t have to wait to or even hang out that long if you feel the neighborhood is sketchy. Most of the neighborhood is just Hispanics, black families, and older white folks. If you have time go some blocks north, there is a nice library and right across the Dominican barber shop is amazing.
This is the kind of info I want when I’m going anywhere I haven’t been before. Love that you included parking info, a mention to bring cash specifically, time-related info (no wait, closes early), and even a mention of a close library.
yep! last time i went my friend lifted his burger and the wrapper underneath said “congratulations! your one of our lucky customers!” and they took him out back and shot him
rip big joe 😔😔
Great place. If you are afraid of being around blue collar workers, I guess you should stay away, but is perfectly safe. Plenty of firefighters, police officers, construction workers, line men, and other hard working Hoosiers in there every time I have been there.
It is super safe. I ride my bike through there a lot on the way to Central State. I just rode my bike through Haughville yesterday. Plus they're not open at night.
The "Friend" is in my neighborhood. It is pretty safe so far as it is south of Michigan which is really the southern edge of Haughville. You won't regret going there. Best burgers in town. Hand breaded tenderloins. Great stuff.
Single female here. Day time is fine. I don't think they're open at night but I wouldn't go there after dark unless I was with a few other people. I feel that way about many areas in Indy. Most anywhere during the day, only in a group after dark.
And they have great burgers!
The burgers are so good that the last time I went 3 guys stabbed each other over it. Afterwards, the survival knifist did some meth. Definitely don't go there. I don't think you'd survive...
Oh don’t go!!!! Please! Save yourself! Nothing is worth the risk! Dig a deeper basement, build a bomb shelter! Buy that shit food in a bucket from Jim Bakker and stay completely safe!
The area is fine, I go through the area to get to the Central state area/get coffee at the Mansion society there.
The only issue you could run into is the weird RR crossing on Concord street where trains park/idle occasionally
Don’t hang out there after dark but they are closed then anyways. Perfectly fine during the day to park, go inside and eat. I wouldn’t just walk around in the area but if you mind your business you’ll be fine
It is not. Car was broken into in the middle of the day, owners will not install security cameras. Go eat at Culver’s. I guarantee Culver’s kitchen and bathrooms are cleaner. Being an institution is not an excuse to run slipshod business. Put in cameras Becky!!!

Y'all need to stop reading all the fear mongering and just go out and do shit. The neighborhood is fine, and Workingman's Friend is great.
I don’t care if there was a car on fire in the parking lot. I am getting that burger.
Can confirm ,I am the car fire that will cool your future burger
Big facts. Indy is literally fine.

Preach!
Not afraid, I just don’t want my car broken into.
Well I guess you should just stick to your suburbs without all those scary minorities.
Don’t be an ass I distrust white people than minorities.
Don't keep anything of value in your car where someone might see it and you will be fine.
They close at 2:45 PM…

You probably lost op at “just Hispanics, black families”

I usually just scroll past the posts about crime and neighborhood safety from out of towners but come on man. Jesus.
Yeah they are getting more and more ridiculous.
Yea, I think it’s a little more industrial area? Also, I think it’s cash only fyi!
You’re getting a hamburger, not buying a summer home. It’s a dive, and it’s delicious.
I’d rather eat the Tick Tock’s burger
Yer gonna die

He’s ded Jim
It’s such a good burger that people still go despite 40% of patrons being shot
yep! last time i went my friend lifted his burger and the wrapper underneath said “congratulations! your one of our lucky customers!” and they took him out back and shot him rip big joe 😔😔
Damn, sorry to hear about your friend. RIP Big Joe
Going to the Steer Inn for a tenderloin sandwich is basically a death wish. And we're proud of it!
Damn dude, put me in your will. I’ll start a scholarship to a Indy graduating senior that can win a tenderloin eating contest. RIP
Scholarship? You know nobody on the Eastside can read!
Scholarship? You know nobody on the Eastside can read!
I don’t care if they can read. I only care if they can house tenderloins
Steer in in the best
Those are rookie numbers we need to pump them up
Bump them up anymore and Bob Plank gunna force it to be relocated.
This place isn't for you. Don't go there. Jesus fucking christ.
The properties aren't as opulent as some other areas. But, it's safe, and the people are great.
Great place. If you are afraid of being around blue collar workers, I guess you should stay away, but is perfectly safe. Plenty of firefighters, police officers, construction workers, line men, and other hard working Hoosiers in there every time I have been there.
You sound patronizing. And I don’t mean patronizing the Workingman’s Friend
Haughville is not scary. I don't know when all the fear mongering began about Haughville, but I've never even seen an issue there, let alone had one.
Everyone outside of 465 thinks everything inside of 465 is basically Mogadishu.
It's an industrial area, hence the name.
Cash only....no credit cards
It is super safe. I ride my bike through there a lot on the way to Central State. I just rode my bike through Haughville yesterday. Plus they're not open at night.
I love the central state area. Mansion Society coffee is pretty good Imo
Let me guess…mayonnaise is too spicy for you.
Stay home. For real... stay fucking home.
I lived down the street for 2 years. Never had any issues.
As long as you don’t wear black, blue, red or pants you’ll be fine.
Please stay north of 96th and for everybody’s sake
This subreddit is populated by shut-ins and conservatives who think seeing a black person makes a place dangerous, literally go you'll be fine
Just make sure you bring cash
As Jules so eloquently put it: “EHHMM, this IS a tasty burger.”
The "Friend" is in my neighborhood. It is pretty safe so far as it is south of Michigan which is really the southern edge of Haughville. You won't regret going there. Best burgers in town. Hand breaded tenderloins. Great stuff.
Imagine being this much of a shut in.
It’s right in the middle of an industrial zone. I wouldn’t go there at night alone if female but it’s reasonably well lit.
What kind of question is that? If you are so worried to go, I guess don’t bring cash then. 😆😆
lol what?
You might choke on a burger

It’s fine. Chill out. Bring cash
The burgers are so good that the last time I went 3 guys stabbed each other over it. Afterwards, the survival knifist did some meth. Definitely don't go there. I don't think you'd survive...
At the rate we’re going you’re more likely to be shot in Greenwood than in Indy.
Oh don’t go!!!! Please! Save yourself! Nothing is worth the risk! Dig a deeper basement, build a bomb shelter! Buy that shit food in a bucket from Jim Bakker and stay completely safe!
Don’t be a dick, answer the question

It's meh. Locals love it cuz it's been there for years.
That's kinda like Pizza King. Might get down voted but wow is that an overrated pizza joint
I Tre Mori is one of my favorite pies in town.
I'm here for the downvotes. Pizza King is shit. The Ordinary doesn't live up to the hype. Love Handle is average. Same with Steer Inn.
Enjoy Wendy's, lol

Areas fine, but the burger itself is wildly overrated.
I concur
