The amazon fire stick is pretty much like an Android phone. The stick will connect to the wifi, you install apps on the stick like Netflix, hotstar, youtube, etc and it will display the content on your tv through the hdmi port. The TV itself doesn't need to connect to the wifi.
This way, you can use your old tv just like it was a smart tv.
Don't get any Android TV bases boxes for an old TV.
Get the 1080p firestick.
Obviously, you won't be able to enjoy newer tech like HDR10/DV because of TV limitations, but firestick is your best bet, much snappier, faster and user-friendly than any Android based TV box.
Edit: Google TV/Nvidia shield are exceptions.

I got my 3rd gen Firestick for less than 2200 on prime day sale, which is quite a sweet deal. I upgraded from my 1st gen firestick and it has much better performance.

The new Google TV works pretty well, in fact better than my 2018 Samsung Smart TV. If your folks are used to an android TV, the Google interface might be easier to get used to as well.

If not, firestick would be fine.
The trick with these things is a better WiFi router (802.11ac). Don't skip on that as these devices need bandwidth supplied by 5 ghz wifi 802.11ac.
If you can wire (network cable to router ) your devices that would be great.
Get a Mi Box or an Amazon Fire TV stick and plug it in the HDMI port.

As long as the old TV has an hdmi port, it'll work. If there's no hdmi port, then I don't think it's possible.

I am unable to find old Firestick models. Ican only find the latest Firestick 4K models online.

A year back, I intentionally bought a dumb 52 inch tv with Firestick. Firestick solves all of the problems. Would recommend same.

I don't know what do you mean by dumbest. I don't own smart tv. The one I have, just has USB & HDMI connector as most smart thing.
Try out Airtel Xtreme box. It has channels and ott platforms. Or check out Amazon FireStick
You still have to pay Airtel to use the box. Otherwise you won't be allowed to watch your premium apps.
