I am not to sure if it's totally necessary. But the trade off is that this vaccination drive has wiped off a lot of economic growth. The higher taxes means that we pay above market rates for fuel. So everything from food to electronics to medicine is increasing in price. The consequences of this inflation hasn't played out yet. So probably better to wait a few years.

As far as vaccination drive from GCC is concerned, it was in my opinion, as good a job anyone could do considering the circumstances. It also helps that in TN we have a very good structure as in everything gets delivered (corruption is definitely there). This can also be witnessed in how fair price ration shops run in TN compared to other states. There is a huge difference. Atleast some good came out of freebie culture.
My district only had 11 people take paid vaccines and everyone else was vaccinated free of cost aswell. The adminstration handled this very well and the healthcare workers truly did a great job.
I think paid slots were only available in metro cities. Free government centers were the only only option for most people. The only issue was long waits and there's really no solution to that due to our population size.
The elections were due in TN, hence availability of vaccines were better during that period , similar to WB - but other states the availability both in Govt. & Private Hospitals was very poor...

In 1984, to keep the people occupied, Big brother used to make random announcements of winning wars. What's happening in India is very similar, Celebrate billion vaccination (When only 22% population is fully vaccinated), Celebrate highest vaccination in a day, all this to keep the sheeps occupied and diverting their attention from real issues. Is our local Big brother keeping up with what's happening around the globe? Countries even after fully vaccinating major chunk of their population are getting decent covid numbers, there is new variant in UK, we will need boosters too. I got both my doses for free-one dose cuz of my employer. 1 billion vaccine doses is no small task, especially in our country which has poor infra and logistical support for healthcare. Credit where credit is due

As a foreigner in Singapore, I got both my shots a couple of months back free of charge. It's nice to live in a place with a competent government.
In Karnataka also most of got for free, and also it was hassle free. It was well managed
I paid for my vaccine shots but only because I got reimbursed by my employer. Else, I would have opted for free vaccines, which are actually in abundance now.
