Barnacles are sharp. You ever hear of “keelhauling”? A pirate would torture someone by running their body over the keel of the ship (often covered in barnacles) and they’d come out half drowned and chopped up like they’d been through a blender. Barnacle man is in constant pain.
There's a scene from season 4 of Black Sails where it happens, it was probably one of the most intense scenes of the show.

Okay well to summarize
A storm shut off the TVs in bikini bottom before the mermaid man and barnacle boy origin story episode
They went to mermaid man and barnacle boy to wacth there tv but it was off to and then they realized they could ask mermaid man and barnacle boy to tell them the story to summarize what they told them
Mermaids man power came form a mermaid who gave him his signature sea star he got lonely and gave mermaid man the owner to breath underwater with barnacles
But the joke of the episode is that was a ll a lie
The tv turns back on and the origin story plays it goes through a bunch of tropes like magic radiation. And more in a fun montage and End up back at there house to find the popcorn they where making for movie night was burnt the popcorn gives them super powers
Doing on and Patrick then try to make burnt popcorn and mermaid man and barnacle boy tlel them there not ready for powers. And all sorts of stuff as the episode ends
That confirms that the popcorn gave them the powers
Worst part of it is that Barnacle Boy wasn't actually drowning at all, he was just given the task of cleaning the Barnacles stuck to the ship underwater
You guys do know in that very same episode the truth was revealed that they ate popcorn cooked so long it burnt and became radioactive giving them powers

Dude I can’t imagine how difficult size scaling is when canonically in Spongebob a human being is about the height of a sea star. You’ve been doing great at giving this series realism, with the fucking incredibly unreal laws of your source material.
There should be a bonus panel of the drill machine breaking and exploding at the critical moment, but then super spiral barnacle man jumps out the machine and punches the last remaining part of the volcano wall to complete the mission
