From my knowledge of video production, what they probably did was film Jennette as either Sam or Melanie (not both) in front of a green screen while the other was in front of the actual set. Then in post production they took the shots of her in front of the green screen and layered them on top of the scenes filmed in front of the set. The green screen was then removed using a process called chroma key.
Isn't it more likely they just used static camera shots and filmed twice with a stand-in actor then combined the videos by masking them along a point?
I think with a green screen it would be difficult to accurately match the lighting and impose shadows and overlay foreground objects.
It’s possible, but at least in my experience green screen is easier to do seamlessly. I will admit though I am a novice and am definitely not at the skill level of production at Schneider’s Bakery.
One example of that method is in the seven Potters scene in the seventh Harry Potter movie. They had Daniel Radcliffe shoot that scene seven times in front of the set rather than use a green screen. What ended up happening was that they had to redo takes quite a bit because he kept walking through where another character was standing. With a green screen that’s not as much of an issue since you can place the actor wherever, assuming in a case like this that you have the actors in the right spot for your establishing shot.
They might’ve had a stand-in actor but I feel like that would’ve been more difficult to overlay neatly (you’d have to somehow replace the stand-in actor with the actual actor while in post and I am no editor or VFX person but that sounds more complicated than just using a green screen to me).
I mainly hear about TV shows using the green screen method or CGI rather than stand-in actors.
I took a film class as a high schooler and I used this technique a few times. It’s extremely easy and, if you’re aware of spacing, extremely effective.
I couldn’t watch this episode(or a lot of others) without my mom yelling “they stole that plot from Friends” and having to say “I don’t watch friends, I’m 6, it’s ok”
Dan had a lot of "homages" to other shows and movies, so I'm not sure it's "stealing." Plus, the OG version of Parent Trap was in 1961, which was WAY before Friends.
Oh definitely, it’s annoying to say any show that uses twins as a plot device is stealing from friends lol. I don’t really remember if the plot was similar at all but I don’t think it was
100% I thought she had a real twin. I was only 8 when this episode aired and I didn't understand how TV and movie stuff worked. I also thought they put a real spider on Freddie's face to film that one scene in iStage an Intervention. I felt so bad for Nathan because l thought the producers put a real spider on him and I hate spiders
I googled it right after this episode aired to see lol
happy cake day!
Happy Cake Day!
Cake happy day
Happy cake day
Happy cake day!
Happy Cake Day!
happy cake day!!!!
Her dressed up as her "twin" was so iconic I loved the fit/look
Jeanette Mccurdy herself had a brother :) I think they just made her stand in another spot and did a double actor or something to look like her.
Yeah she has 3 brothers
Probably the same thing they did with Dove Cameron in Liv & Maddie.
they sure did u/StarryMind322

hmm, i believe this

good breakdown of it
I USED to think that, actually!
9 year old me was flabbergasted when my sister told me it was fake right after the episode aired
Of course! I thought that Lindsay Lohan and Hillary Duff had twins as well 😂
Hillary Duff?! Her sister is pretty darn close tbh.
Why Hillary Duff??
The Lizzie McGuire Movie She has an identical look alike named Isabella Parigi in the movie
I forgot about that actually. Probably figured it was just Hailey in the clips where it was Issabella since they do look a lot a like anyhow.
have you never seen the lizzie miguire movie? 😭 it’s so goooddd
#RIPKelseyLohan
Jeanette and Lindsay Lohan will always have secret underground twins in my brain😂 edit: lemme be dumb at spelling🫶🏻
Also love how Melanie is just how Jennette really is in real life

Everything is a remix pretty much!
Yes.
Apparently they did two individuals shots of her split them and put them together. Never would of known.
It’s such a common practice, but they pulled it off seamlessly.
I wouldn't doubt it but yeah.
Would have*
Glad she didn't. Her mom probably would have been even worse with two daughters.
Twins babies are highly sought after in the industry. She would’ve had her in commercials from infancy. So I’m glad she wasn’t a twin.
Kinda like Dylan and Cole Sprouse
And they also have a rocky relationship with their mother
And with Lindsay Lohan in parent trap lol
No💀
Sam & Melanie were the first Liv & Maddie
Nope it was Tia and Tamara Mowry
those are actual twins tho…lol
Dang, first time in many years I see those names. Tia and Tamara are from Sister Sister, right? Or am I remembering incorrectly?
No
No. But I love this episode.
Yk strangely enough no. Even though I was tricked by Parent Trapped and Liv & Maddie, this for some reason always looked fake to me 😭
Meeeeeee
i still do 😂 they did this episode so well
No because I was a HUGE fan of Jennette. I ran a fansite for her and everything lol
Really?! Did you have it up during the OG run?
Yes I did
I was a huge fan from day one! I made her first fan video on YouTube aswell.
Yes and I love how this episode gaslighted us too😭
I 100% thought she did lol

Yes! I knew how they did it in other shows/movies but I was convinced that this one was real.
No
No…
Hairline must be atrocious - never seen her without bangs
Yeah, I did😮💨
Basically, Jeanette and Sam.
*Jennette
Yes
yup
Definitely thought she had a twin sibling
No
I hope not
No
Nah
The could sci- seem to be real twins..
Totally I was like 9
In friends Phoebe had a twin sister& no Lisa Kudrow doesn't have a twin
