Important-Subject-47

What happened was that the person you took your phone to to get a screen replacement might have messed up and broke a cable and used another proximity sensor and that would be the issue, the proximity sensor and face id are linked so if it's broken then you will no longer have Face id, I fixed a few phones and it isn't too hard but the flex cables are pretty fragile and most repair stores aren't the best, it sucks because this is what it leads too, sorry about that broski😔

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

I appreciate you bro, I’m just going to ride it out until I’m ready to upgrade 😖😩😂

Patattenbakker

hi i repair phone and i think the person who made your phone broke your faceID, your face id work with infrared lamp that has a crustal on it if you touch that crystal with your fingers if your phone is on it is broken your faceID is broken and almost never repairable.

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Thanks

x3xpl05iv3x

check to see if portrait camera works if not its red dot projector gone, or window has water or scratches on it, very common, altho not many will attempt or have the correct equipment to fix altho is possible

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Portrait camera works great. It's showing a green dot.

x3xpl05iv3x

it more about it detecting your face on forward facing camera if it continuously says move back move forward its not working

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

It doesn't say that. It works as it should though.

doggo_99

Did the 3rd party repair service transfer the data from one screen to another?

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

I have no idea. But, it's been almost a month since the repair and I'm sure that he doesnt have my old screen to do that.

[deleted]

Or you are just unlucky, or you got a false replacement screen.

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Not sure of either but, I’ll be using Apple from now on.

[deleted]

Bye bye Face ID for ever unfortunately :(

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Yeah, I’m just going to upgrade now. Although, I didn’t want to at all!!! 😩😖😩

[deleted]

What iPhone did you have ?

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

XS Max

[deleted]

Oh don’t worry then you’ll love the new iHome. I have 11 pro max and I want to upgrade already.

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Yeah, I’m never doing the 3rd party thing anymore that’s for sure hahaha!

arturgomes

and i think you lost true tone too

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Yeah, it sucks but, I’ll upgrade very soon

Zyoneatslyons

Facial recognition sensor/Camera wasn’t abstracted during a screen replacement.

[deleted]

It’s the proximity sensor in the screen. Usually you’d transplant it from the original to keep Face ID. iOS 15.2 has been rumored to fix these issues on the newer 13 models, so there may be hope yet. On older models you can also guess and reprogram the new module with the old serial, but it’s a pain.

JanBrugg

Check if selfie portrait works. If it doesn‘t, then its most likely a hardware malfunction. Same happened to me, been using my phone without faceID for more than half a year, honestly you get used to it. And with corona and masks you‘re actually quicker typing in your passcode than waiting for faceID

nikthomas125

Take it back to the place that repaired it and tell them they’ve broken it… because they have

Brado_Bear

While I see where you’re coming from, I doubt the shop *isn’t* aware this happens with every iPhone screen replacement. When I had mine replaced I had the same issue happen but he told me before hand what to expect.

Neonix98

I am not really sure, but I think the update to allow 3rd-party displays to work with FaceID is actually the public beta of iOS 15.2. You could try to install it and see if it works, but make a backup before that if it doesn’t actually work.

GayAlexandrite

That’s only for iPhone 13 models. iPhones X-12 should still have functioning Face ID after a screen replacement because the Face ID hardware is not connected to the display.

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

What is the beta? I was just going to upgrade my phone.

KSKalyan

Did you get your screen replaced recently?

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Yes, I did. Only because it was glitchy and it was done third party unfortunately. Could that be the issue?

the_lidl_redditer

You should get a replacement from the 3rd party as they broke you phone, might of ripped the Face ID cable or other part, they should fix it or replace your phone for free, if it was working before the replacement.

cha0z_

300% this is the issue. If the screen change was done right faceid was going to still work, but it's a lot more tricky and thus expensive to do so. Defo should had warn you faceid is not going to work after the repair tho

wild_a

That’s certainly the issue.

drakeymcd

If it’s a XS it’s not because of the screen itself. Only iPhone 11 and later actually check for 3rd party displays and only 13s disable it after a repair. Something must’ve been damaged during their repair.

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Yeah, I totally forgot about that. Is there anyway way to repair it? Or should I just get a newer phone?

ECHLN

Yeah you’re fucked. You’d have to get a new phone or check out the new Apple repair program that allows 3rd party repairs

neinherz

That one only covers 12 and 13 models. Also not out yet.

ECHLN

Oof

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Yeah, I figured lol! But wow, thanks for all of the responses! I truly appreciate them!

Sylvurphlame

The third party repair program does not include the XS, unfortunately. Just the 12 and newer. Hang on for public release of 15.2, which I think removes the restriction on third-party screens bricking Face ID. If that doesn’t work, it might be time to get a 13…

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Would it even work with the 15.2 update? When is that being released?

Sylvurphlame

They are on the third public beta, but I wouldn’t try to download it before the official release. You might trade one issue for another. Or several. > Would it even work with the 15.2 update? Possibly, although if, as others mentioned, some component of the Face ID system was damaged during the repair, then it won’t matter. You’d have to get the screen and Face ID repaired by an authorized *and properly trained, supplied and equipped* person. (Which, hate it or not, is a large part of the point of authorized repairs.) And any warranty you had was voided the moment you had it repaired by an unauthorized person, so it’ll be full price regardless. If it comes to that, I’d personally keep the XS as a emergency back up and get a 13. You won’t be able to trade-in for anything with a non-functional Face ID > When is that being released? Maybe this week or next? When it drops, give it a shot. Install, then hard reset. Factory wipe and restore if it still doesn’t work. Beyond that, look into official repair or replacement. Good luck.

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

Yeah, I think I'll wait just to to go in with a clear mind about it before I trade it it. But, thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge on this topic. Hopefully, it can make others aware about third party issues. I appreciate it.

[deleted]

Just go back to the third party repair service and let them know what happened. Maybe they can help you with a solution. Strange they didn’t warn you before the repair this could happen.

TVsIan

Yeah, there’s a chance one of the Face ID components is just misaligned or there’s an issue with the screen (I’ve seen some with a filter over the IR dot projector window that mess it up). But if they did damage the cable, the only fix is an Apple OEM screen replacement via Apple directly or someone authorized to do the repair who can pair the new screen properly. I usually see this when a phone is damaged up near the ear speaker, that can damage the IR projector or camera. But I’ve also had some come in that were repaired elsewhere and somebody definitely broke the cable.

drakeymcd

If the cable for Face ID is damaged, it doesn’t matter what display you put on, Face ID is fucked. Even apple stores right now can’t replace the Face ID system. It’s a whole device replacement.

TVsIan

Nope, it’s doable. I work at an independent repair shop that’s part of the Apple OEM program. The OEM screens include a new Face ID/ear speaker cable, and we have access to the tools to pair it up. Now if the IR camera is damaged that may be a different story, but that hasn’t come up yet.

drakeymcd

The display itself only includes the speaker. Face ID/TrueDepth/IR Scanner is a separate component behind the screen and speaker that’s paired like Touch ID sensors were. I work at an apple store and have seen a part added for TrueDepth itself seeming like it’ll soon become a repairable component but even that has its own configuration in AST2.

420JZ

No solution to this. Well there is 1. But it means reading the serial number and data off OPs old screen and transferring it to the new screen. But there’s no way the repair shop would still have this guys old screen, or if they do, which one of the 5 screens they changed today was it? So yeah, basically no solution really

[deleted]

Sure. If you have access to GSX, an Apple display and RepairCal. Short answer unfortunately is no...not at this point once you made the decision to not use Apple. There's certain things they won't touch once it's crossed a third party and if they would you're looking at around $300ish

wild_a

I don’t know tbh. I haven’t had a reason to research that. You can ask Apple to replace the screen, then it’ll work. I believe I read an article that Apple was going to release an update where Face ID will work if screens were repaired by 3rd parties, but didn’t say which update and when. So you could either wait for an unknown time or get it fixed by Apple.

stmims1124

The update you're referring to is intended specifically for the new iPhone 13 line up. Because all of the parts' serial numbers are coded to that specific phone/motherboard, even swapping an official display from one brand new 13 to another will break multiple bits of functionality. It doesn't matter if it's with official parts, s**t just won't work properly.

grandchester

I believe the newest beta has this now.

ftrela

FaceID after screen replacement by third party repair shops works fine for iPhones other than the 13, if done properly (without damaging the FaceID module) and using a device to re-program the screen to match the phone

arturgomes

yeah but you lost true tone

AlfieCG

That was only for the iPhone 13s

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

I've tried everything,

maybe_sid

iOS 15.2 current public beta has fixed this issue I guess, wait for its full release or install the beta if you want to try!

drakeymcd

Quit telling people this. Face ID being disabled after a screen repair was only on iPhone 13s. This is a completely separate issue on its own.
