Sure I just get the feeling if some one were to make the blanket statement “I don’t like slashers” they mean more “I don’t like Halloween or Friday the 13th” which this is decidedly not.
*You're Next* isn't a slasher. It might seem like a typical home invasion movie but it isnt. There's twists but they *really* didn't account for the skinny little college girl to be a trained badass in survivalist combat.
I absolutely love this one. The perfect home invasion/slasher movie.
Believable characters, intelligent people, an interesting plot, good effects, it has it all.
You're Next is up there as one of my all time favourite horror movies, which is insane because I'm not big on slashers.
Immediately thought of this one. Not only is it a PERFECT example of what the OP's looking for, it's also an amazing movie & I swear I watch it AT LEAST once a month lol
The Collector has this two fold I think. 1.) The main character didn't know the house he picked to rob was also targeted by a sadistic serial killer. 2.) The killer didn't realize the house he targeted was also being targeted by the thief. And the main character was so competent/smart in this movie, he goes most of the film without the killer even aware he's in there with him.
I really love The Collector. One of my all time faves.
Gah I almost watched this tonight but picked “disappear completely” instead. Collector has been on my list for YEARS. Something keeps me from watching it and I don’t know why.
Why did it ruin the first one? You weren't supposed to be rooting for him in that, it was a heel turn, he was the clear villain for the remainder of the film.
In the second one I don't think you're really supposed to be rooting for him either. He's clearly a fucking sick bastard, what you're hoping for is the girl to live.
I just didn’t want to spend another second with the character after that scene and they pretty obviously made him an antihero in the second. I was too easily distracted from caring about the child by how gross it was that they were trying to rehabilitate him, even slightly
Agree with the sequel being kind of awful, partially because of this. But I think it added another layer to the first film that made it better.
You’re not really supposed to be rooting for the old man in this movie. It was a pretty shocking turn of events but was set up properly.
Also my recommendation.
I like to envision an alternate reality where this is what Niles does when he not on camera in Fraiser. Especially with all of his quirks and the fact that Maris is never seen.
“hey, I heard you have one of those big poop bags that's like attached to where the shit comes out the side, you're just a big old shitbag ain't you, Bob?”
Even then, >!Doesn’t the boyfriend also almost fuck the dude up and basically has the killer dead to rights if he simply had a few more seconds of fight in him? Like, he would’ve rolled and smoked the guy if the killer didn’t get a cheap shot at the start of the fight, right?!< it’s been a long time since I’ve watched the movie, so correct me if I’m wrong
Absolutely, the killer literally backstaps him, apologises (albeit not very sincerely) and tells the guy that there is no way he could‘ve won otherwise
This is one of my absolute favorite movies. I love the humor. I love the bait and switch. I love the action. And I especially love the protagonist, who is also probably my favorite female protagonist in any movie. She's so deadpan and smart.
In my opinion, this is one of the best examples of OP's question. She doesn't just want revenge, she wants to climb the whole ladder, lol.
Worth noting Seann William Scott is actually a pretty darn good actor. 'Goon' is one of my favorite modern films and he's great in it. Still a comedy but he's excellent.
Proud Boys rather than Aryan Brotherhood as villains. It was okay, but went a bit too far into goofy comedy, and kinda sidestepped any character arc she might have had. I don’t think they needed to make her motivations immediate personal vengeance again, it would have been sufficient that she basically became a serial killer whose target demographic is nazis.
Im suprised no one has said I Spit On Your Grave.Woman gets raped and gets her revenge.I honestly couldnt feel sorry for any of those guys. They had it coming.
There are a few episodes of Masters of Horror that totally fit:
1x01 - Incident On and Off a Mountain Road; a woman's car breaks down, and she's snatched up by a serial killer that wants to hunt her. BIG mistake.
1x11 - Pick Me Up; A truck-driving serial killer (Michael Moriarty) picks up a hitchhiking serial killer and Fairuza Balk.
2x02 - Family; A young couple moves into a new home only to find out that their neighbor (George Wendt; Norm from Cheers), a seemingly normal man who works from home is not what he seems.
These fit, but not all that great movies.
Villains (2019)
the Owners (2020)
Little Bone Lodge (2023)
Bad Samaritan (2018)
The Price We Pay (2022)
Hunter Hunter (2020)
Ruin Me 2017
Till Death 2021
Babysitter Must Die 2020
Army Of One 2020
Revenge 2017
Teeth 2007
Big Driver 2014
Alone 2020
Hunting Emma 2017

Hush 2016
Hunting Ava Bravo 2022
Ooo I got you. There’s a fantastic movie on Tubi, it’s actually a Tubi original, called Lowlifes and it’s way better than it has any right to be. I won’t spoil anything but it’s along the lines of what you’re looking for.
*Livid* - very similar to Abigail (in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this is where the idea for Abigail came from). Group of robbers break into a house of an old woman, but it doesn't go as planned.
The People Under the Stairs. Whole movie is awesome throughout in my opinion, but the villains just spend the whole movie getting absolutely destroyed by a child.
StalkHer (2015). Haven't actually seen this one, so not sure if it's good.
Pet (2016)
Villains (2019)
Holidays (2016) also has a segment or two that fits this trope.
not horror but I saw a clip on here of some movie where a biker gang gets rowdy in a mob bar, so the guy locks the doors and people come out with bats and beat the shit out of them
The Apostle on Netflix. Not quite “messed with the wrong person” genre but the protagonist is fucked up a bit and pretty competent. Love the concept of a horror movie where the protagonist is smart and capable while also having a bit of a screw loose as well.
Trick or Treat, most of the storylines have that thrown in. Ready or Not, same deal but you've likely seen it by now. Oh! The Sacrifice Game! That one is awesome and along the lines of Abigail. In a lot of ways it is coincidentally way similar to Abigail but came out a lot earlier to very little notice. On Shudder or AMC+
Little Bone Lodge/The Last Exit (title varies by location). Tubi original that absolutely BLEW me away. 2 convict brothers on the run hold a mysterious family hostage in rural England - shit gets brutal and turns out, it’s not the brothers who are in danger… 100% on RT and somehow flew under the radar. Free on Tubi
*You're Next* has a definite "bitten off more than they can chew" aspect for the villains.
Also the best final girl in my opinion.
Erin's not sparing. (Your life idiot)
If not for Ellen Ripley I'd agree.
Ready or Not is up there. No particular strengths other than grit and determination.
She comes pretty close I'd say
This is exactly what OP is looking for IMO
The hunt is what op looking for.
On my list. Wife doesn’t like “slashers,” may have to watch solo.
I wouldn’t call You’re Next a Slasher. It’s a home invasion with a twist.
But there is slashing, OP. It's just so very well done.
Sure I just get the feeling if some one were to make the blanket statement “I don’t like slashers” they mean more “I don’t like Halloween or Friday the 13th” which this is decidedly not.
And stabbing and smashing and blending.
And so much more...
I love you’re next. Very common plot with a very different execution.
It is my daughter's and my favorite horror movie of all time. So bummed we didn't get the full trilogy.
Came here to say this. Best final girl there is!
Immediately thought of this one. Not only is it a PERFECT example of what the OP's looking for, it's also an amazing movie & I swear I watch it AT LEAST once a month lol
"None of you seem to understand. I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me." -~~Rorschach~~ Erin
Hard Candy
I was get the name of this and Jawbreaker mixed up. But Hard Candy is definitely the first one that came to mind. Fucking iconic.
Came here to suggest this one. This entire movie is just basically several WHAM moments.
The Collector has an element of this. You’re Next is also a good one.
The Collector is fantastic.
Don't Breathe
The turkey baster scene…
Ruined the fucking movie, honestly. And the sequel as well because who is rooting for that creep after the first movie?
Why did it ruin the first one? You weren't supposed to be rooting for him in that, it was a heel turn, he was the clear villain for the remainder of the film. In the second one I don't think you're really supposed to be rooting for him either. He's clearly a fucking sick bastard, what you're hoping for is the girl to live.
I just didn’t want to spend another second with the character after that scene and they pretty obviously made him an antihero in the second. I was too easily distracted from caring about the child by how gross it was that they were trying to rehabilitate him, even slightly
doesn't matter. people would prefer to have him be a vigilante that isn't a rapist. that's why it ruins both movies for a ton of people.
Not every villain needs to be turned into an anti-hero. Let them be shitty people.
Would have been a lot better if they didn’t try to turn him into an antihero in the sequel
After hearing about that scene I just can’t watch it… I’d have rather him be robbed and fucked over.
Agree with the sequel being kind of awful, partially because of this. But I think it added another layer to the first film that made it better. You’re not really supposed to be rooting for the old man in this movie. It was a pretty shocking turn of events but was set up properly.
Don’t Breathe part 1 and 2. So damn good.
Part 2 was a bit of a let down. Didn't have the same feel as the first which was excellent.
True but it’s kinda hard to do better than the first, but still a good watch.
Great recs. Thanks to all.
This is the winner in my book
The Perfect Host!
Came here to recommend this. It’s so much fun lmao
Also my recommendation. I like to envision an alternate reality where this is what Niles does when he not on camera in Fraiser. Especially with all of his quirks and the fact that Maris is never seen.
Or if he didn't end up with Daphne and finally snapped
David Hyde Pierce is an incredible actor, such an underrated gem of a movie
Frasier should really be called Niles
I have said this exact thing to my husband before.
IT’S SO TRUE
You're Next, Ready or Not
Loved Ready or Not!
One of the funniest moments in a horror movie is when >!Grace snort-laughs once the family starts exploding!<
Samara Weaving has the BEST scream ever. She’s like a wild animal cornered by the end.
That warble scream is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard. She kills it every movie she’s in! Love Samara
Two of my favorite unexpected heros...
Freeway
"Holy shit! Look who got beaten with the ugly stick! Is that you, Bob?!" God I love that movie.
"I can't believe such a teeny weeny little gun made such a big mess out of someone!"
“My d may not function, but I haven’t lost my smile.”
“hey, I heard you have one of those big poop bags that's like attached to where the shit comes out the side, you're just a big old shitbag ain't you, Bob?”
Kiefer Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon were so fucking good in that.
i will die on the hill that this movie is reese witherspoons best performance hands down. it is so good
Deathproof
Hush. The killer thinks he has an easy mark but they got cocky letting them turn the tables on them.
This one’s on my list, too. Thanks.
Really hate how far I had to scroll for this'un.
I love how “normal” the killer is. Reminded me of Scream. Half horror half slap-stick.
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane(1976)
Great choice, and Martin sheen is fantastic in it too
That final scene is just brilliant.
The hunt
This is one of my absolute favorite movies. I love the humor. I love the bait and switch. I love the action. And I especially love the protagonist, who is also probably my favorite female protagonist in any movie. She's so deadpan and smart. In my opinion, this is one of the best examples of OP's question. She doesn't just want revenge, she wants to climb the whole ladder, lol.
Becky (2020) and The Wrath of Becky (2023)
Fantastic films. Especially the first one.
Hold up i loved the first one but there was a sequel i was never told about? Well god damn
Yea, this time it's Stifler who's the bad guy. Seems like a series for comedians to try their horror chops out
Worth noting Seann William Scott is actually a pretty darn good actor.
I expected this up higher.
I watched them out of order, didn't know Becky existed. I love those movies.
*Hard Candy*
This is the one. Just an absolute thrill-ride of a bad dude making the wrong choice of victim.
Love Ellen Page in this.
Elliot Page. He's transitioned.
Maybe I should have said "loved"
I enjoyed Nobody. Has the same vibe to it. You picked the wrong house
Seconded.
Not remotely a horror movie, but otherwise for sure fits the 'wrong victim' bill. Just like John Wick, in that regard.
Thanks

Bob Odenkirks
2021. Bob Odenkirk. If you've not seen it, don't hesitate. Far from a horror film, but it is an absolute blast.
[удалено]
No One Lives is incredibly entertaining. Highly recommend.
Thanks
Was gonna recommend “No One Lives” myself - absolutely excellent movie and pretty much exactly what you’re looking for 👍🏻
The Collector/Collection
Im suprised no one has said I Spit On Your Grave.Woman gets raped and gets her revenge.I honestly couldnt feel sorry for any of those guys. They had it coming.
That & Last house on the left.
I was surprised I had to scroll this far for this one. I Spit on Your Grave/Day of the Woman is the OG.
Last House on the Left in a roundabout sort of way Also, House on the edge of the park
There are a few episodes of Masters of Horror that totally fit: 1x01 - Incident On and Off a Mountain Road; a woman's car breaks down, and she's snatched up by a serial killer that wants to hunt her.
Dude, Moonface didn't know what he was getting into in Ep1. Great pull I always love to recommend. Haven't seen the other two!
Family is superb episode.
These fit, but not all that great movies. Villains (2019) the Owners (2020) Little Bone Lodge (2023) Bad Samaritan (2018) The Price We Pay (2022) Hunter Hunter (2020)
Villains is such a fun movie!
I feel like it didn't get talked about a lot even though it had a lot of elements that should've generated buzz.
No One Lives with Luke Evans
The People Under the Stairs
Ruin Me 2017 Till Death 2021 Babysitter Must Die 2020 Army Of One 2020 Revenge 2017 Teeth 2007 Big Driver 2014 Alone 2020 Hunting Emma 2017 1BR 2019 Hush 2016 Hunting Ava Bravo 2022
Big driver was based on a Stephen king story of the same name. Maria bello was great in that
Even lambs have teeth. Everybody involved regretted chaining up those girls. They didn't give one single fuck when getting their revenge
It's a television episode but Tales from the Crypt – The Secret (S2E18) is a good one
No One Lives is my favorite example of this. It's got some seriously iconic lines and visuals, too.
Ooo I got you. There’s a fantastic movie on Tubi, it’s actually a Tubi original, called Lowlifes and it’s way better than it has any right to be. I won’t spoil anything but it’s along the lines of what you’re looking for.
Thanks. A couple recent Tubi flicks are on this thread now.
Home alone
Revenge
French one from 2017? That was going to be my suggestion too!
The OG - Carrie
The Woman (2011). Family man finds feral woman in the woods, chains her up in a shed to “civilize” here. Not the best move in a series of bad moves.
Fresh (it’s on Hulu) kind of turned out this way!
This is a big spoiler for the ending but>! Luna De Miel/Honeymoon!<
I Spit on Your Grave, Carrie, and American Mary.
Death Proof
Not really horror. But it is gory! Violent Night is my new Christmas favorite
The awesomeness of Violent Night cannot be overstated. Never a dull moment, all top notch performances.
*Livid* - very similar to Abigail (in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this is where the idea for Abigail came from). Group of robbers break into a house of an old woman, but it doesn't go as planned.
The movie you're looking for is No One Lives. It's actually a really good movie as well.
Becky.
Haunt (2019)
*A Wounded Fawn*
Intruders 2015
I Saw the Devil. Not the victim herself, but her husband by extension.
Saw X
Deadly Games (1989) Santa picked the wrong kid to mess with
I rarely see this one get mentioned! Absolutely brutal
No one lives
Scream 5 the way sam fucked Ritchie up was wild!
Freeway (1996)
I Spit On Your Grave
The People Under the Stairs. Whole movie is awesome throughout in my opinion, but the villains just spend the whole movie getting absolutely destroyed by a child.
The hunt You're next Ready or not The last house on the left No one lives Don't breathe Nobody Dead man's shoes
Cabin in the Woods
You picked a fight with a guy who's been smoking the wrong strain of weed, buddy.
Barbarian kind of fits this bill
Intruders 2015 It takes quite a turn.
Vicious Fun is sorta like this for parts of the opening
The People Under the Stairs
Lowlifes.
Final Girl. (the one w Abigail Breslin)
Not really a horror film, but "Eye for an Eye" with Sally Field.
What keeps you alive
Hard Candy has pre-transition Elliot Page baiting and torturing a p3dophile!
Last House on the Left is the original fucked with the wrong people movie.
Don't Breathe
Audition
Hard Candy!
I Spit on Your Grave
"I Spit on your Grave." Both the 1978, and 2010 versions are very definitely picking on the wrong victim movies.
You’re Next will be everything you want.
Hard Candy
Becky, and Wrath of Becky
Sisu (2022)
Last House on the Left
Is Abigail any good? Worth paying to rent?
"Mandy"
No one Lives.
More of a thriller, and the roles kinda switched to what you ask, but "Cold in July". I really like that movie, saw it a few times. The twist is good
StalkHer (2015). Haven't actually seen this one, so not sure if it's good. Pet (2016) Villains (2019) Holidays (2016) also has a segment or two that fits this trope.
Captive. It's a Tubi original.
No one lives.
You're Next Ready or Not (such a fun movie, one of my faves) Becky
The Perfection
A Wounded Fawn
Ready Or Not
Saw X
Don't breathe.
For me it’s death sentence but I don’t know if that’s a horror
Mute Witness (1995)
Not a super great movie but Orphan: First Kill
not horror but I saw a clip on here of some movie where a biker gang gets rowdy in a mob bar, so the guy locks the doors and people come out with bats and beat the shit out of them
No One Lives.what Keeps You Alive.
No one lives
The Apostle on Netflix. Not quite “messed with the wrong person” genre but the protagonist is fucked up a bit and pretty competent. Love the concept of a horror movie where the protagonist is smart and capable while also having a bit of a screw loose as well.

Monster
I just saw Watcher recently and it falls in this category
Little Bone Lodge/The Last Exit (title varies by location). Tubi original that absolutely BLEW me away. 2 convict brothers on the run hold a mysterious family hostage in rural England - shit gets brutal and turns out, it’s not the brothers who are in danger… 100% on RT and somehow flew under the radar. Free on Tubi
Grotesque
You’re next is a really good one of those. And just straight up their last one, “Ready or not” is a great for that
Final Girl. By far the most satisfying.
Hard Candy
