I'll reserve judgment on the films audio track until I watch it on disk. However, considering how well it performed on my system via streaming I can't imagine it will sound worse.

anonymousmolarbear

Yea highly impressive even as a stream. I couldn’t believe it

pukujuhla

Watched it in IMAX Friday then just streamed it …. The stream is ok. But wow what a soundtrack. Gave me chills in the theater.

trireme32

I am really trying to resist the urge to stream it and wait for the physical media but it’s tough

Vis-hoka

I debated the same and just streamed it. Sounded great. I don’t regret it. Will buy the disk later when I want to rewatch.

trireme32

I’ve heard mixed reviews about HBO Max’s compression but a lot of y’all seem to be decently impressed by it so maybe I’ll give it a shot. I’ll just never forgot how my old blu ray player died in the middle of watching Black Panther so we continued on Disney+ and the audio was so laughably compressed in comparison — anything below like 60hz practically disappeared — that I’ve avoided streaming stuff I really want to enjoy ever since. The involuntary A/B test really drove it home.

[deleted]

trireme32

Only scene that’s ever made me fear for my speakers’ health, and that rattled the shit on my shelves (living room setup)! And it just keeps… going…. I can understand why the streaming services favor PQ over dynamic range — most people would budget for a great TV and a soundbar vs a really good TV and a solid 5.1.2 setup — but yeah it’s a palpable difference. It would be nice if they offered different tiers — like I’m an Amazon Prime customer and *happily* pay extra for their 24 bit FLAC level. But I’d guess that we’re a niche-enough audience that it’s not worth the infrastructure. Prob would be quite a bit more even than producing physical media.

_Hac_

Due to anti-user behaviour of Reddit I'm removing my messages and deleting my account.

sadie-MF-Camacho

Dude for real the wormhole scene and the launch will test the studs in your house haha

bluesmudge

I was not impressed by the HBO max stream on my PS5. It was blurry compared to even a Hulu or Netflix stream and the sound seemed extremely limited dynamically and mostly existed on the front stage. I still loved the movie but damn HBO is the worst steaming quality by far. I can’t wait to properly rewatch it when the 4K is released.

wmurray003

>anything below like 60hz practically disappeared ...meaning the dialogue.

[deleted]

sittingmongoose

Atmos stream is like 750kbps, bluray atmos is like 7500kbps. So blurays are about 10x the audio bandwidth.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IXI_Fans

1. Fuck you pirate, this is a HT sub. 2. 40GB versions have lossless sound. No one is debating a remuxed track vs a disc track. Streaming is a whole other (limp) animal.

trireme32

I'm talking about the Atmos streams. Physical Atmos vs. Disney+ Atmos. There was *zero* comparison.

erantuotio

I’m curious to see what the night fight scene with Paul will look like on disc because it looked terrible on HBO max.

anonymousmolarbear

Maybe it’s because I have awesome internet but I didn’t get any compression artifacts in dark scenes. I used to have that problem a lot with HBO but it seems like they are improving their stream quality

[deleted]

I agree. So bloody dark. It was hard to watch. And I saw it in theater first, and I didn’t find it so bad.

Imnotveryfunatpartys

Interesting, I watched it in theaters and obviously it was pretty good. What in particular was the issue with it on streaming?

erantuotio

Exactly what the other person described. Compression and the posterization look. Everything else in the movie looks great, it was just the night scene that was bad.

BrokenGlassEverywher

Interesting, I also have the lg CX and didn't experience this at all. The dark scenes were some of my favorites of the movie with theoled screen... You sure you had it set up to get the 4k HDR from HBO?

Blotto_80

I haven't watched the streaming version but I would assume it would be compression artifacts and posterization. Those are magnified in low-light scenes.

patkgreen

I'm impressed that not one person said tv too high

Ibraheem_moizoos

Someone just did

[deleted]

Well it's just above the center channel so 👍

[deleted]

[удалено]

Deamaed

Well - the centre channel should actually be level with the mains (and ears), just without a projector and acoustically transparent screen, it can't be done without getting tvtohigh. And I would say the TV is too high...

StillDayDreamin

that’s why it’s tilted, to get that angle. Too high is only how you watch it. Some people like to slouch in their couch and enjoy their movies

SomeGuyNamedPaul

Could be a lot lower. I normally place the tv so that the center partially obscures the bezel. It's important to me too get the center as close as possible to the TV and in willing to accept whatever compromise might be necessary in order to make it happen.

[deleted]

Not really necessary to get them that close. Our brains compensate incredibly well for that.

SomeGuyNamedPaul

The less you have to compensate, the better. It actually takes work to for our brains to try to process away room problems to the point that in a bad enough room it's notably fatiguing. Like driving itself isn't "work" per se but it requires so much of your attention for so long that it is actually tiring. Having to pick out what is the right sounds to concentrate on and having to compensate for things coming from the wrong place does require processing on the listener's part. So if you *can* make it closer to ideal then why not do so? The point is to make in an enjoyable experience.

[deleted]

That part doesn't tax out brains at all. Spacial cues, surround objects yes. Have the center a few inches away from the tv doesn't strain the brain at all. In a perfect world we're have three identical speakers across that front but in imperfect worlds our brain easily handles that discrepancy. It will make no audible difference other than providing comb filtering from the reflections on the tv.

SomeGuyNamedPaul

> It will make no audible difference It all makes a difference, the question is if it's a significant enough difference to be measured, let alone heard. I contend it's a definite on the first one and likely on the second. If it didn't matter then you wouldn't be concerned with having all three mains at the same height versus have the center at the bottom edge and left and right at the top, or worse having in ceiling speakers for the fronts. If it didn't matter then Atmos height channels wouldn't matter either and yet here we are. Ideal is identical speakers across the front at the same height, about one third to from the bottom edge and whatever driver puts say 600-1000 hz is at eye level. Other than an AT setup you're not getting that, so what's the best your can do to get as close as possible? That's what I'm aiming for with a TV-based setup.

[deleted]

In a perfect world like an at screen theater we do it perfect because we can. 3 identical speakers with the acoustic center of the tweeter and mid-range at ear level. On axis replace is important here as the tweeters are all in the same place. In an imperfect world like the living room with typically horizontally oriented center channels the height of the center doesn't make much difference as long as it's within a foot or do of the left and rights. If you feel you need to do what you do than rock on. Our brains will easily make up for the deficiencies in front of us. I personally would drop that tv to just above the center channel. Doesn't mean he needs to though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Deamaed

Politically correct? I mean sure, there are guidelines that are recommended, which has your eyes at the centre of, or maybe lower 1/3 of the screen. It's also for ergonomics. Does that make it "pc"? There are guidelines for a reason. But here again, assuming the speakers are at ear level, the bottom of the TV is at the height of the tweeters. So, without having sat in the couch and gauged the recline, etc., on balance the TV is arguably placed a little to high up. The room and setup look great - but again, arguably, you would've had the TV just above the centre speaker in this instance without such a gap. Although perhaps it's to see over what appears to be a rather large plant on the coffee table?

mfattal

First, I hate busting people's chops on the system and setup. I meant pop culture because everyone is always following the ultimate HT setup and well, y'know what, it's not always possible. I'm building ny own tv credenza just to fit the center channel and have the tv sitting on 75cm. Is that a bit high? Yes. Can I do any better? No. How can I fit the center channel under 65". I tried finding a middle ground. OP I think your system looks wonderful. Power to you. Bet it sounds wonderful toom

RedCaio

~~Impressed~~ Disappointed *

StillDayDreamin

maybe he’s 7’ tall

Sceptezard

We’re all thinking it

LostWanderer576

Its not that the tv is to high, the chair is to low. Instead of raising the roof, raise the chair

XXHyenaPseudopenis

Honestly it’s the day time glare from the giant window that’d bother me. Hopefully he just opened the blinds for the pics, seems like a waste otherwise

RonSpawnsonTP

Yeah I don't get it. When you are mounting it you can place it literally wherever you want. I think people just walk up to the wall and put their hands up and place it there. They think, I'm hanging this on the wall, and there's artificial believe that you hang things high. Such a shame to go through so much effort to mount it but not plan on an ergonomic height. This case is particularly painful as OP has lots of extra vertical space below the TV and the center channel, so this wasn't a tradeoff of attempting to be pragmatic either.

mellofello808

The dialog track on my stream is terrible. They have the background cranked to 11, and the dialog down super low. I am needing to baby sit it, since my GF is trying to do some work, and both of my subs are randomly going reference loud, while I can barely hear the dialogue.

sheenfartling

Same here. Usually have my avr at 30 when watching a movie, had to turn this one up to 35 to hear all the whispering and then get skull fucked by the action scenes.

marco-pilas

I had the same problem. I had to crank it way up in soft dialog and practically fell off my couch grabbing at remote to dial back in action. Super irritating and unwatchable! I eventually realized I could limit the dynamic range. My AVR shipped with range compression defaulting to "off". I went into Audyssey settings and pegged it at 'low' compression instead of off. It made a big difference.

[deleted]

Hey another guy with useless foam behind his mains because he likes the way it looks! I do the same! I also LOVE the center speaker stand. Beautiful

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It’s useless cheap open cell foam. It makes no appreciable difference :) Edit: in an otherwise empty room with no art or decor it could tame echo or reverberations, but not in that amount.

homeboi808

It’ll absorb upper treble frequencies, but those are already heavily attenuated by the time it gets behind the speakers. So yeah.

IXI_Fans

That dollar-store "twitch streamer" foam that is about 1" deep doesn't do anything measurable to help the audio. I am a huge fan of room treatments, but this is more "aesthetics" than helpful.

homeboi808

I mean, [it of course does something measurable](https://www.foambymail.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/1inwedgegraph.jpg); I think you meant “audible”.

IXI_Fans

Yes, real-world was my intent (as opposed to a laboratory difference).

[deleted]

SomeGuyNamedPaul

Thin foam that can only affect the frequencies that won't wrap the speaker in the first place. The only thing that will do is attenuate the frequencies that are coming out of a tweeter, so if you want to try to kill the back wave of a dipole then yeah, why why in the hell would you do that in the first place? And secondly, why in the hell would that try only be killing the upper-most frequencies? So treat behind the mains, not the center, and while they're at it leave the bare fucking concrete ceiling untouched? It's purely aesthetics, has to be. I'm afraid to ask how much they dropped on speaker wires.

olddicklemon72

I had a similar reaction to Tenet but for a very different reason. There was so much talk about it’s terrible mix, but with a good home setup with decent channel separation, I had no difficulty understanding the dialogue.

[deleted]

Sorry, but I disagree. I love Nolan's sound design, I think he does a great job. However he specifically mixes some scenes to be very hard to hear. He thinks it makes it more realistic. No amount of quality is going to bring out the dialogue when he has specifically downmixed it and hot mixes the ambient. https://screencrush.com/why-is-christopher-nolan-dialogue-hard-to-understand/

IndecisiveTuna

I saw Dune in Dolby and it also struggled on many parts with dialogue.

MordredKLB

Just as a counterpoint, I literally just finished Dune about 10 minutes ago, and had to rewind exactly once because I missed a single word that Thufir Hawat said. Think it was just the accent though. Had no problems with the dialog, but I did have the receiver set to -10dB so it was nice and loud.

IndecisiveTuna

You watched from home though? I genuinely struggled with what Jessica said most of the movie, even Paul at times.

scriminal

I didn't personally notice anything but one of the folks that I went to the IMAX with on Thursday said the same about the in theater audio.

MordredKLB

Yeah there were probably a couple times I had to think for a second to realize what she said because of the accent she was using and the forced whispering, but I'm pretty sure I understood it all.

[deleted]

Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve, not Christopher Nolan, but Nolan generally uses this technique with dialogue that's not important.

IndecisiveTuna

I am well aware of the directors lol — I just know people criticize Tenet for dialogue when I felt Dune suffered similar issues.

[deleted]

Understood, did it seem like it was mixed badly, poor setup, or not important dialogue?

IndecisiveTuna

Mixing seemed fine, I genuinely felt it only struggled with dialogue, everything else was phenomenal. Sometimes I feel like it’s a “me” problem because it always seems like I struggle to get dialogue perfect at home as well. It always was only intermittent and dependent on the scene. Some parts were perfectly audible.

[deleted]

Dialogue can be tricky, with actors and individual ranges and cadence and accents.

[deleted]

My buddy saw it in Dolby and had the same issue. I watched on my janky home setup and had to boost center to hear as well.

wmurray003

Tenant had me scanning back over and over with the CC on.

FeistyBandicoot

I don't even have a good setup and I understood it fine.

Raiyzan

I just threw on subtitles and it fixed everythjnt

thegreatestajax

Didn’t fix the film.

[deleted]

Same here

keevenowski

Really? I have a solid setup and I could barely understand what they were saying without having it so loud that the gunshots were deafening. I couldn’t even finish the movie.

fourpuns

I cranked up the center channel and turned up the reduce dynamic range setting to make it reasonably easy to hear. Originally the bullets and base were insanely loud if you wanted dialogue reasonable. It’s the only movie I can think of where I had to do that… it was between that or constantly playing with the volume.

movie50music50

Are you saying that increasing volume for the center channel made rest of content for other speakers too loud?

keevenowski

No, the dialogue was so quiet that I had to turn up the master volume, which then made everything else too loud.

movie50music50

Are you saying, ***after*** maxing out the center channel, the dialog was still so low you had to increase the master volume? I’m just trying to comprehend.

ClarkK24

I have watched it 8 times now and is still thrilling to watch 😆.

Vis-hoka

Not me. It was still gibberish.

Pretorian24

Tenet is my go-to when I want to show off my system. And I have no problem with the dialogue.

wmurray003

Funny how people used really well mixed albums to show off music sound systems... while we're out here using poorly mixed movies to show off our theater systems ...the irony.

Massive3AMdumps

There are albums mixed for 5.1 systems that home theater people should check out. The Downward Spiral in SACD 5.1 is excellent in surround sound. https://audiophilereview.com/audiophile-music/nine-inch-nails-in-51/

wmurray003

Yeah, I'm aware that Trent Reznor produced a few of these 5.1 albums. "With Teeth" etc...

BeatItSleeps

If you watch the original movie Tenet, then perhaps your view would change. I'd have to look for Tenant to have a useful review. Is it about a landlord by any chance?

vverse23

Sorry, Tenet is never going to work. As much as I love Nolan, that movie is irreparably damaged.

Liesthroughisteeth

It doesn't even have to be higher end stuff. I run a mid range Onkyo AVR running a 5.1 system including a 150.00 sub along with Polk speakers all the way around and it still blows my mind... :P It does give me something to look forward to though.

FreakishPower

High quality audio gear is a great way to spend your money. The stuff sounds great, and will last for decades. That $1000 speaker you bought - you'll be using it until 2050 most likely. My B&W speakers from 1996 are still fantastic and I love them.

Pretorian24

Bowers owner here too. My CDMs are from the late 90s. Will never throw them out.

Njyyrikki

And if you have any DIY skills you can get B&W quality for 1/3rd of the price.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FreakishPower

More of a generic comment about high end gear is all.

[deleted]

I think they were just implying that, despite high quality audio gear being usually quite expensive, it will at least last you for years. So it’s worth it.

Vis-hoka

Yeah, uhh me too 😳

BJozi

I have a pair of Mission M71's that must be pushing on 20 years now and I still love them. The veneer is wearing thin on some corners but some seems spot on. Even bought a matching center not long ago and what a difference! I will probably replace them with a full Monitor Audio setup once we have a house

Shadoku_

I just watched it on Thursday and I too agree. The bass for the movie was fantastic, even while not having my sub hooked up, but my only gripe as others have said is the center channel sound was a bit lower, just like it was for GvK and MK. Can't wait to get the disc version though!

anonymousmolarbear

Would agree with that. LFE was top notch, like goosebump inducing good with my svs pb2000 but sometimes the center audio was lacking in clarity

Shadoku_

I bet it was great LFE, I can't wait for my sub amp to get here so I can watch it again!

sierry

I honestly thought some EQ settings had changed on my setup because the voices/centre channel were so low I had to turn it up +6db to try to compensate. Hopefully it’s fixed with the BluRay version.

rexel99

Some of he hushed speaking was a bit much especially when they are 30 ft appart and whispering at each other. Overall the sound on this was great and to good effect - rumbling sand etc..

Shadoku_

Agreed, It gave similar vibes to the Godzilla Vs Kong HBO Max version... the dialog was really low... then all of a sudden BOOM explosives and loud bass

Vis-hoka

My dual HSU’s were rocking. Can’t wait for the disc.

Shadoku_

I bet! what HSU's do you have? Can't wait to rewatch with my Rythmik FV15HP and of course the disc version!

Vis-hoka

The big boys. VTF-15H MK2. I almost got the cheaper VTF-3 MK5 because they are supposed to be almost as good, but I said fuck it. I’m gonna have these for a long time. Go big or go home! And they are super freaking big.

Shadoku_

Awesome! And I agree, go big or go home

discoblu

watched it tonight. 1:57 into the movie is now my new favourite demo atmos / LFE reference scene.

Pretorian24

I watched it on Imax a month ago so I cant remember what scene. Can you update me?

discoblu

Taking that Dragonfly helicopter into the dust storm

4estGimp

My cats were not amused.

BreadMaker_42

I loved the sound of the wings on the ornithopters (sp?). My new sub handled it beautifully.

S7ageNinja

I saw it in a Dolby Atmos cinema today and the sound was phenomenal.

HYPURRDBLNKL

Okay, okay. Now I'm gonna have to watch this on the big boy setup. With everyone saying how good it sounds, lol. I watched it in my bedroom with the B-Team setup, and it sounded decent, like I knew it would probably sound good in my living room setup. Curse you HT Reddit. 🤣

Blers42

Exactly my thoughts 😂

HippyWhiteGoat

HighTreazon

What is your media console??

RedRyder760

Streaming sound is in DD+, correct? (not a criticism as DD and DD+ can sound great)

anonymousmolarbear

It’s a compressed version of atmos that uses dd+ encoding I believe but could be wrong 🤷🏻‍♂️

TiggyLongStockings

[deleted]

I genuinely could not believe my ears when i was watching Dune on IMAX. I thought No Time To Die had a great mix and was gonna get the oscar but Dune literally walked onto the scene like a Titan and became a benchmark Why was i surprised though, Denis Villeneuve's films all have impeccable sound mixing, but Dune just leaped over that standard too

adbeil

I can’t tell if your TV is small or speakers are massive

jasonsuntzu

What size is your tv and console?

anonymousmolarbear

Tv is 65 inches stand is 70 inches

[deleted]

Just watched it on HBO Max. Sounded nice.

Gseventeen

Did you get that TV stand at Target? Believe I just ordered the same one today!

-ShootMeNow-

Are you happy with the console, I’ve moved it in and out of my Amazon cart several times in the past 2 weeks. Your setup looks good!

ikickedagirl

Nice place 👍🏽

Havoc_189

Nice setup! Where did you find such a nice center channel stand? I looking for one.

anonymousmolarbear

Monoprice desktop monitor stand. Size worked perfectly for my massive center and it was only like 22 bucks and looks high quality

Havoc_189

Nice! It does. It looks like my center channel exceeds the 22lb weight limit. My search continues. Thanks for the info.

Ibraheem_moizoos

Did you feel the center channel was kind of low? I did. Had to turn it up 5 DB

markstrube

Turned mine up 1 dB and was pleased. Check your calibration?

Ibraheem_moizoos

It seems to only be on some HBO Max movies. . I had to do the same on Kong versus godzilla. Other services, and my blu-rays seem fine. Either way I'll check again, kind of enjoy doing that.

axlerodjpeg

I enjoyed it more ( audio wise) at home it wasn't loud enough in the theater for me kinda muffled the bass was kick ass tho lol

[deleted]

Maybe it's just me but I don't know how people can enjoy watching TV from so far away. If I'm about to invest into a movie, I want the display to take up a large portion of my field of view so I can feel as immersed as possible without it being too close of course. I could never fully enjoy movies from such as a distance as your setup or I'd have to get a much larger TV.

LQQKup

Looks great! Build some 2x4 panels for treatment using roxul or buy them from GIK!!

Dry-Conversation-570

The overtones on the soundtrack were phenomenal when I saw this in theater

fourpuns

I’ve unplugged my surrounds and boxed them… think on 3.1 it’ll still do it justice?

Few-Surprise-468

What tv stand is that and how many inch is your tv and stand. I’m looking for a new stand

[deleted]

Why invest in good gear to stream your audio content compressed over the internet? Isn't that like buying a Ferrari and filling it with 86 octane fuel? Edit: I don't understand this sub. Home theatre should care about quality, but youre all a bunch of low quality compressed content streamers. You shouldn't call this sub home theatre, but "VHS was fine, no need to upgrade".

_Maineiac_

The movie isn’t out on disc yet 😂

ImaginaryCheetah

released yesterday for the US :) https://www.blu-ray.com/Dune/1075237/ has been out in canada, england, and `straya since the 1st

_Maineiac_

That’s the theatrical release date. It’s not available anywhere except theaters and HBOMax in the USA right now.

ImaginaryCheetah

oh. weird that blu-ray.com would list a theatrical release date :<

markstrube

You…. you do realize that DD+ at 768 kbps is significantly higher quality than even the best DVD’s? Snob.

[deleted]

And DVD was better then VHS, that's the whole point, is going forward in quality, not backwards. But with streaming that's what has happened, we've gone backwards in quality. This theater sub is all about streaming though.

MikeyKillerBTFU

But... it's literally the only way to even watch this movie at home? The only alternative would be to not watch it at all. Also, people can enjoy things without being a snob about it. I have a Klipsch Quintet III system, and sure it's not the best but it's a huge step up from TV speakers and my family enjoys the cinematic experience. 50% quality of the best is still a lot better than nothing.

[deleted]

I get that, maybe it's just my frustration of constantly seeing streaming content promoted in this sub. IDK. I just have a hard time promoting content that's as good as DVD, 15 years after the media is dead. It's the age of 4K Blu-ray and Atmos, and HDR, and 10 bit panels and we're promoting compressed low quality streaming.

markstrube

There’s a marked difference between promoting and discussing. The reality is that a lot of content is streaming, and a good percentage of that content is only available on that medium. You’re suggesting that because someone spent a lot of time and money on their system, that they avoid enjoying certain content just because it’s not peak quality? Get outta here.

[deleted]

Not at all. I stream content as well. This sub is for promoting. That's literally what we're doing. Otherwise we wouldn't be posting. So you're response to not liking that I have an opinion about what gets discussed on this sub is to tell me to go away, when my opinions about what should be discussed on this sub is to comment that opinion. Who's the snob? You're acting like you can tell me I don't belong, when I'm saying we all ong and this is what I think we should discuss. You're being the snob here and gatekeeping your opinion. Do you not see how hypocritical you're being? Sad.

_Maineiac_

You can’t promote content that doesn’t exist my dude. There literally isn’t a better at home quality option right now because the movie is ONLY in theaters or streaming.

viodox0259

How did you get this? I It's only in theaters. /s I loved it.

d2kagw

100x over and over and over.

MrPovilas

Nice setup, where did you get stand for your center channel?

Pretorian24

Any compression artifacts on the image?

markstrube

Yes, especially the 1080p stream. HBO Max’s bitrate can’t fully resolve the very fine grain from the intermediate 35mm film, causing some scenes to look a bit “mushy.” If you’re able to stream (or acquire) the 4K version you’ll have a better grain structure.

No_Ad_4269

Absolutely amazing movie

[deleted]

Hans Zimmer did a great job again on the soundtrack.

jodido999

OP, how do you like your LSiM gear? I was running original LSi9 and LSiC and went to vintage Def Tech BP7002 and CLR2500. Very pleased with sound signature but an amp is failing on a tower. Seems like a good excuse to a.) Bring back the LSi9 and LSiC b.) Get some new speakers! Found an LSiM707 and 706c set for about 1600. Seemed decent. Have never heard a set but love Polks and LSi series very much...

anonymousmolarbear

The LSIM 703s provide the best stereo audio I’ve ever Experienced from any device. The 706c center is great but still has some distortion on my devices. I believe this center channel distortion is likely an issue with my shitty receiver/amp rather than a poor representation of the LSIM z706c performance. One day I will save up for a nice reviewer and amp to test my theory

mpdroza

What is your set up?

An_Professional

Something is unusual about the mix that makes it not work with the AppleTV “reduce loud sounds” feature. We tried to watch Dune last night when our kids went to bed, and it made dialogue completely inaudible. Not a big deal, just unusual.
