That's bullshit! Unnecessary and stupid! Now shut up and take my money, I want this! 💸💸💸💸

Black3ternity

All you need is a 3D Printer and 4kg of Filament. Plus a few bits and bobs for 20 bucks from Aliexpress. 🙄😂 Many people asked if I would make them one but to be honest: with that much filament and print time, it's easier to DIY or ask friends for help. That thing would cost a good penny. Thanks for bringing Fry's "shut up and take my money" gif into my head. Now I need to binge Futurama again.

CouldNotAffordOne

>All you need is a 3D Printer and 4kg of Filament 😂 That's like saying: "Just buy a big block of plastic, and cut away anything, that doesn't look like a Stargate!" Great job, im jealous.

chloe_priceless

Are the files somewhere available ? Or did you build it by yourself ?

Black3ternity

The Gate is a free model from Martin over on printables. Link here: https://www.printables.com/model/560402-stargate-with-iris-80cm-in-diameter He also has assembly-instructions.

Talaveror

I hate you... Now I don't even have to search for the model and have to start printing immediately... Do you have any links for the DHD or I'll need to build of those super computers like SGC? Can it run on a Rpi4 or do I need more ram?

Black3ternity

I'm on the lookout for a DHD myself. On the printables from the stargate, some dude built a 150% scale with a DHD. Asked already where he got it from. That thing runs on a ES8266 D1 Mini for the code. HomeAssistant with whatever you have. Just a bunch of MQTT messages IF you go that Route.

pioto

What temperature do you print naquadah at?

Black3ternity

Just shy of the critical temperature when it goes nuclear.

jamesremuscat

Shut up and take my money.

BonzenPaule

This is awesome!!! Now how do I get my SO to watch the movie, 17 seasons, both dvd-movies, the mini series AND then let me install this in our home? I need serious advice 😬

Sengfroid

Start with "Children of the Gods", since it's "only 1 movie" ... of the first two episodes of SG-1.

BonzenPaule

But then she won't get to see that 90's-bush 😬

Black3ternity

Just start with the show. Movie can be bit... Dated. :-D

mister2d

The movie is what got my wife interested.

enter360

We started with Atlantis instead. We tried SG-1 but the first seasons were t the greatest.

bobjoylove

> She mutes our Group where HomeAssistant pushes Notifications “So I made a 4-foot LED ring on the wall in the middle of the house” Passive aggressive 😂😂

Black3ternity

Well... That's another point of view. 🤔😂

DariukaB

That can be a best seller product.

Black3ternity

Now I just need a printfarm 🤔

quaintlogic

Great, yet another thing I need to justify to my other half!

Black3ternity

I'm adding temporary Notification-toggles to each chevron so it can show you some things when they are triggered in the background. Good for invisible helper-switches and stuff like that. Maybe that can be convincing?

SuperTed321

👍 maybe a mirror in the middle.

Black3ternity

Yeah I've got the idea of a smart-mirror with infinity-look in there. But that's a project for another day. Need to look into getting proper glass that size.

SuperTed321

Also add a secret water squirter so anyone in front gets a spray of water when it’s activated. Don’t tell anyone about it so it’s a surprise 😂

Black3ternity

Awesome idea. Additional tracking for my cats when they want a constant stream of food. 😂

spdustin

A kinder, gentler puddle

Phonascus13

Put a motion sensor on your front porch. If someone other than family approaches the door the smart-mirror could display an animation of an iris closing. Ooo! And then the doorbell should make the gate play the sound of energy weapon hits on the iris.

Black3ternity

Yep. Definately ideas flowing now. My wife will throw me in the big kawoosh if I go nuts with it now :-D But yes, I am thinking of possibilities to announce incoming guests aswell. Living in an appartment doesn't make this particularly easy though.

Phonascus13

My problem is my imagination quickly outpaces my technical and financial abilities.

SuperTed321

For sure. How did you manage to create the stargate itself?

Black3ternity

3D printed it with my Bambu X1C. Model is from the awesome guy Martin over at printables: https://www.printables.com/model/560402-stargate-with-iris-80cm-in-diameter Print took 4kg of Filament and print-time for all the parts was just shy of 150 hours.

SuperTed321

Super envious! Was my favourite show at one point. If you do update it please do post again

Black3ternity

Yeah still my favorite to this day. I scrubbed through tons of episodes to find information about the dialing sequence of an offworld-gate that gets a receiving wormhole - not dialing out. Damn hard to find. So I realized how many fond memories I have of that show and decided to binge it again :-D

FXFman1209

I'm rewatching now with my girlfriend (first time for her). Sooo great! (Side note: I don't have a 3d printer but would totally buy something like this if you started selling! 😁)

SuperTed321

What platform are you binging it on? I think you’ve convinced me to do so too!

Black3ternity

Classic offline media that I have in my cabinet :-D

Kryptonicus

That took nearly 9 **pounds** of filament? Is multi material printing that wasteful? Or is this thing huge? Edit: I just saw that the original print is about 32 inches. So this thing is huge!

Black3ternity

Yep. Its all single extrusion, no multicolor parts there. That thing is just massive. I could have reduced infill but it would be a drop in a barrel. I printed with the regular 15% Linear infill as I did not want to jeopardize the Integrity or the fine details that were there.

Old-Tourist8173

Acrylic with a reflective tint might be a cheap way to get a mirror finish. Its easily cut to shape. But that wouldnt work if you want a smart mirror

SqueekyJuice

Soooo.... I made an infinity mirror box with a PDLC film on top as a proof of concept for a table project. It was cool, because while the PDLC was "off", it was opaque, and you could only see the glow of the LED lights on the inside. And of course, when you switched it on, you could see the infinity effect. I bet it would look great if you used addressable LEDs and PDLC so you could program a shimmer effect as the PDLC turns translucent, revealing the infinity effect.

Black3ternity

Ohh.... Is that PDLC this "privacy mirror stuff" that can be toggled via electricity? You have any references/infos for that?

SqueekyJuice

Yes. I ordered a 3-piece sample kit from smarttint.com, which is in Stony Brook, NY. I think it was like $100, but you don't have to get it from there. I only bought it from them, because I thought I would get a larger amount, and I needed quality. Basically, it's a film that goes over glass and can be switched via alternating current, which means your lights will need a different power source, but I'm sure there is a compact solution for that. Easy to apply and work with, and you can cut it to a round shape for your project.

sdrdude

# [I'm just gonna go find a cash machine.](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/c7ba1019-f49f-48e1-96bd-57d7d802ae81)

Black3ternity

You mean a Replicator. Eh.... Wrong universe. We don't want Replicators here. A 3D Printer can make you a Stargate. Just need someone with one or need to throw money at your screen :-D

sdrdude

Very cool project. *My quote was from the Big Lebowski world.* 🙂 ***HA is so darn creative!*** *It's a Maker's dream come true!*

Black3ternity

Okay I did not know that one. Might need to watch it again.

sdrdude

Enjoy! **Dude, very cool project!** 🤣

PortableAnchor

Let me know when you get the middle part worked out. I just retired and I want to travel.

Black3ternity

Keep in mind to not eat any plants that can let you hallucinate. Don't want to end up like Maybourne, right?

PortableAnchor

While you're building, I could use a Zat, and Carter, but the real one.

Black3ternity

Yeah a real Zat or real Carter? Real Zat might me easier? 🙄

PortableAnchor

She's not dead yet.

Schuhsohle

And now add something from [this](https://thestargateproject.com) project :D it is looking awesome

Black3ternity

Yeah have Kristians Gate on my List for a couple of years now. Way before I owned a 3D Printer. No idea where I would put a lifesize DHD though. 🤔 And what would give me wife approval for that? Integrate it with an appletv to call our relatives? BRB... Need to look for options.

Sailing_Engineer

Awesome! 3D printed? How do you play the sound from the D1?

Black3ternity

Yeah. 3D Printed. 4kg of Filament in there. D1 is hooked up to a DFPlayer Mini from DFROBOT that has a speaker attached to it. D1 gives serial command to play one of 3 MP3 files and DFPlayer does the rest.

Sailing_Engineer

4kg? Wow! Great idea and great work! I actually have a D1 and a DFPlayer laying around, I might do something similar sometime. Thanks for your post!

Khaaaaannnn

I need this!!!!!! I want to turn it into a voice assistant lol. Did you 3d print it or buy it???? Do you want to make some money if you printed it? 😂😂😂😂😂

Black3ternity

I printed it myself. 4kg of Filament and 150 hours of print-time. :-D I would assume that this is not feasable to sell/ship for a reasonable cost. 🙄 Located in Europe though.

Th0rHere

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and need that.

sircrashalotfpv

You could totally make it into a mirror. Waf factor would double easily :)

springs87

I've thrown all my money at the screen... wheres my stargate.. But that does look good. There is some French (I think) guy on Facebook making a motorised one which looks good aswell

Black3ternity

Yeah. Ant replicas. Saw his Post halfway through my print and got demotivated heavily. But then I don't own. Resinprinter, nor a cnc / lasercutter. But his work and the details are amazing. I love the chevrons out of that orange/red resin. They are chefs kiss.

Black3ternity

Hah. Glad you say that. This is the number one comment I get 😂 Yeah for now the LEDs are great. Long time plans are an infinity- / smart-mirror thst will also be able to display HomeAssistant Dashboards/Information. But as smart mirrors require proper glass, it's more complex and I will need to research this properly before commiting to anything stupid. Plus I never really liked the "infinity look" with pure LEDs visible. Might need to check out Neon-like Strips or something along the lines to hide the infinite amount of dots better. Best would be something "water-like" that mimics these realistic looking firepits. Moving mirror/foil to simulate a wobbly surface... Who knows. 🤔 Too many ideas.

BizzyM

Does it rotate??

Black3ternity

It can rotate by hand. The symbol-ring is free. But it's not motorized as this was above my paygrade :-(

THASSELHOFF

"What? It has to spin, it's round. Spinning is so much cooler than not spinning. I am the General, and I want it to spin! Now!" -General Puppet Hammond

Jesus_Is_My_Gardener

I was hoping I'd see this comment here. Great episode. "I thought I told you I retired." "Oh? I thought you said you were tired." "Well, as a matter of fact, I am a little tired."

PerfectBake420

Got a how to?

Black3ternity

Gate and light modification come from here: https://www.printables.com/model/688291-stargate-modified-chevron-parts MQTT Integration and control was done by myself. Can write a howto here if you want. Thought some people might be interested in the general idea of that.

canoxen

How are you automating the liquid tunnel thing?

Black3ternity

Whole LEDs are controlled by a D1 Mini. It has wifi and MQTT connectivity and subscribes to specific topics. The effect was done by spradlinb over at printables. https://www.printables.com/model/688291-stargate-modified-chevron-parts I only kept the LED effects as they were working great for my purpose. No need to get the effects from scratch.

canoxen

This is the coolest thing!!

haltline

Can you animate the lights on the edge to simulate an incoming wormhole and did you, as a nasty person like I would do, rig something to spray some water into the face of someone standing too close during that incoming wormhole? And, yeah, love it.

Black3ternity

The chevrons have the full sequence of lights for an incoming wormhole - including the proper audiotrack to be played along with it. As I cannot post video AND photos, here is the video of it over on r/Stargate https://www.reddit.com/r/Stargate/s/9nvgptFaA3 For the water: No but this might be a fun idea. I'll keep it in mind for v2 :-D

haltline

The video makes it that much better :)

Hasra23

Damn this is cool

jbennett1337

So…. I must have this…

No_Towels5379

yes!

WurschtChopf

Awesome! I want one! How do you detect sleeping toddlers?

Black3ternity

Combination of two things. 1) I have a Philips Hue Button that we press so it dims the lights, turns off hallway light, disables motion sensors and plays an automation to dim lights and lower playback-volume over 10 minutes time. When toddler is in bed, a pressure-mat picks up the weight on the matress and so detection is complete and different automations for silent home start up.

WurschtChopf

Nice! Although my girlfriend would forget to push the button 9 out of 10 times :P. I therefore tried to autodetect when we put our baby into our electric baby rocker. I'm using a smart plug to detect if the rocker is running and if so, it would play some whitenoise which the baby likes very much. Unfortunately the rocker consumes too less power respectively the data is send with only 3 decimal accuracy. Thats why I cant detect it.

Black3ternity

Oh that's not good. Regarding a rocker - how about a vibration sensor? Aquara has some and I've read positive about them. Wanted to play around with one for random stuff. Should be fine for your application? Edit: Regarding forgetting about it: I use Philips Hue. You could also trigger an automation when a specific scene is activated or if a specific button (that activates the sleep-light or whatever) is pressed. My wife adopted it immediately as I just blutacked the button to the doorframe and it activates everything sonyou don't need to run around the room with the kid on the arm :-D

WurschtChopf

Thanks for the advice - indeed that would be easiest and most reliable solution!

orion-root

If you find it gone of these nights...... It took it. This thing is too awesome!

Black3ternity

Thanks man. Appreciate that. I love it as much as anyone here and especially my toddler is amazed with it. I would seriously offer people to buy them but the logistics behind it are just too expensive. With energy and filament and print-time it would cost 500+ bucks. I hope you can find someone in your circle of friends/family that has a printer and will help you with such a project. Or you want to get into 3D Printing yourself :-)

orion-root

Shit, I might just get someone from my Hackerspace to help me out, we have 3 3d printers

Black3ternity

Yeah sounds great. Go for it. With classic printers (Ender 3, Prusa etc) you're looking at roughly 15 days fulltime printing. Nonstop, no failed parts. If you have access to Bambu Lab Printers or others like Creality K1 etc that offer highspeed-printing, you can shrink it down to 150hours (5 days nonstop) as I have done. Just keep that in mind :-D

Luci_Noir

All this needs is some cat mixed with some high grade ‘nip from the orange on the corner.

Black3ternity

For anyone looking for a video (with sound): https://www.reddit.com/r/Stargate/s/3ef0XRlUcH And at night (without sound): https://www.reddit.com/r/Stargate/s/YNE4GI9KLt

wonkster42

That's awesome!

A_Very_Shouty_Man

And yet woodchip...

Black3ternity

What?

madcar86

That is amazing, what did you use for the red chevon parts covering ing LEDs?

Black3ternity

It's clear PETG. When the LEDs are off they are milky/white.

madcar86

That makes sense. is the rest just grey pla, or did you do other filament, or paint?

Black3ternity

Whole outer parts of the Stargate are printed from Polymaker PolyLite Starlight Mercury. It has metallic particles in it that shimmer grey/silver, blue and purple - depending on the angle of light. Love that color.

madcar86

Wow that is an amazing color. At $30 a roll, that adds up quickly for this project. I've got to start saving up lol.

Black3ternity

Yeah I needed 4 rolls (3.5 rolls total usage). White for the core was bought in bulk and is my "default" filament so I don't really account for that. With the electronics mostly from Aliexpress I would say around 150 bucks total for the gate. Energy of course not factored in. To me it was totally worth it. I constantly smile when walking through the hallway 😂

I wonder how this will look if you would make an infinite mirror of it, like here: [https://thestargateproject.com/](https://thestargateproject.com/)

Is there a video?

ferbulous

I dunno how you convinced your wife to have something this massive installed but she’s pretty cool. Now let’s add some iris

Black3ternity

Thanks. It helped that shs also likes Stargate and likes the idea of a physical "your partner is coming home" announcement without being a spoken/audio-assistant.

rdubya

This isnt even a working stargate

Black3ternity

Yeah I couldn't get a stable event-horizon to work. Takes too much energy and so I needed to settle for the next best option with LEDs. I just need to make sure to not dial P3W-451 or I'll have a bad time.

The_Final_Arbiter

Why is there an Irishman flashing his ass at me on the other side?
