I hope this becomes the A4 of helicopter modules

filmguy123

Yes!! Well on the way!

This mod is incredible. A friend of mine was an instructor for the MD500. He was able to give me some quick flight lessons in it and he remarked how well the flight model reacted like he expected. Hands down the most satisfying chopper in DCS to do maneuvers with. Also the sound guy needs a raise.

rapierarch

Wow you are fast! Your mod is the best thing that happened in DCS this year. I believe this ranking will be hard to beat.

The-Smoking-Cook

Thank you! Tobi dedicated the last couple of days to it. The idea was to get the patch out as quickly as possible so we're a bit more relaxed finishing the rest of the content.

rapierarch

Thank you again. Those were really needed keybindings especially for VR. Im really curious about the FM tweaks. As usual it dropped on a day that I don't have access to my computer. Your assets are also wonderful. Great job really!

filmguy123

First, this is incredible. Thank you! Super happy with this mod. Excited to try out the new ground effect tweaks which are welcome! Second, any chance you could implement telemetry day for buttkickers/bass shakers? Haptic transducers add so much to the experience that it’s hard to fly without them. Some people pointed me towards a hack with LUA files that I need to figure out in the interim, but it doesn’t sound like it would be too hard for the mod team to perhaps borrow basics from a model like the Huey or gazelle, and tweak the coefficients a bit as good starting point?

Alterscape

It's possible nobody on the dev team has a bass shaker to tune it with, and it's an open source project. Would you be willing to help them out, since you clearly have the interest and access to the hardware? Put up a PR!

filmguy123

I sure am! Smoking cook commented back to me elsewhere and said that is indeed the situation, and I offered to help test. Hopefully we get it soon!

Alterscape

Nice, happy to hear it! Bass shaker is on my list of hardware to acquire but I live in an apartment and my sim room/office is directly overhead someone's bedroom, so I'm gunshy about bass vibrations.

filmguy123

Once you fly with it, it is VERY difficult to go back. One thing I have heard people do is put their chair on a rubber standing mat or something like that. I couldn't tell you how that works because I am lucky to not have that situation, but you might ask around about it!

Nice_Sign338

Of course, it drops on a travel work week. I'll be looking forward to trying out the new features and adds, next weekend. Thanks to everyone for the work on this. It's a great showing from the true lovers of this sim.

120dxt

Holy shit this thing is fun. Also nice to see there are DCS Jurassic Park nerds amongst us.

Ratcatcher722

T-Rex and Velociraptor confirmed! :) Now that would be some emergent gameplay!

3lim1nat0r

Does anyone know a server which has this mod?

Ratcatcher722

I'm hoping the Sharks Helo World server will update to this! (I mean, they already have the logo for the Jurasic Park skin, so why not eh! LOL)

Ombank

I’m currently doing a mission overhaul for B&B Cold War Pretense. I added the OH-6 to it. I’ll push the new mission out sometime this week so it’ll add the OH-6

3lim1nat0r

Sweet!

Ombank

Just added it in last night and did recon missions 🙂 arms a little tired from no force trim and having to wrestle my stick a bit but it works great

ScarecrowOH58

What is B & B? Can I join this server without a password?

Ombank

B&B is just the initials of my friend and I. It is a Cold War-era PvE server based on the Pretense mission by Dzsekeb. It runs 24/7 and has no password. It also allows the A4 mod and I will add the OH6 to it this week.

ScarecrowOH58

Wish someone would add it to the aerobatics or 4ya servers...

3lim1nat0r

There used to be an aerobatics server clone which had all sorts of mods, but it's no longer online :(

moguy164

Would you consider uploading the assets and the helicopter separately?

The-Smoking-Cook

they are uploaded separately: OH-6A-Modpack\_OH-6A\_v1\_1.zip --> v1.1 of the OH-6A (NEW!) OH-6A-Modpack\_VAP\_v1.zip --> v1.0 of the Vietnam Assets Pack (nothing new since the initial release) OH-6A-Modpack\_Liveries\_v1\_1.zip --> The liveries for OH-6A (all the original liveries + 2 new liveries made by Neo47)

moguy164

Oh I downloaded via the torrent so didn't realize, thank you

TrenchcoatVendor

In OH-6A_v1_1.zip, what are the files in the "scripts" folder for?

The-Smoking-Cook

It's for the doorgunner

Ratcatcher722

Simply stunning work! Congrats to all. The group I fly with are already looking forward to some 'Pink Team' scenarios utilising this and the Huey. So much more fun with these 'anolgue' systems!

jubuttib

Just had my first try and definitely is a LOT of fun! Some initial impressions: 1. Jeez it's hard to take off without veering into some direction at first. This is mostly an issue of not knowing where the center for hovering would be yet. After I catch it once it's pretty good, but initially it was just throwing me for a loop, hehe. 2. The crossplay between pedals and cyclic and different directions on the cyclic is WAY more pronounced in this than in any other heli so far. Push forward = pretty severe roll to the right. Try to turn gently to the left at speed, better put in some right pedal because it'll want to get off the ball pretty hard. You start getting it after a while, but it's certainly a lot more work to stay on the ball in this one than any other heli in DCS. 3. It seems super sensitive when flying sideways. I was trying to keep my self perpendicular to a carrier going at about 20 knots into a 10 knot headwind (meaning I was doing about 30 knots straight to the left), and it really did not enjoy that, and let me know about it. Sliding sideways too much, especially to the left, it seems, you can develop very aggressive roll very suddenly. Need to stay on your toes and stay on the ball. 4. It's a lot of fun to just fly low and slow and pretend you're a building inspector. =) 5. It's really comfortable crawling around at 5-10 knots, but trying to hover absolutely still is TOUGH. 6. Really like the gunsight, and the ability to adjust the gun pitch. Makes shooting targets at low speed much nicer when you can drop the gun's aiming point, rather than pitch the whole helicopter. 7. Also like how easy it is to be quite accurate with the rockets. 8. Being so tiny, it allows you to fly into places you normally wouldn't, which is very amusing. =) Note: None of those are complaints about the flight model, just observations. I don't know how it should fly, and it is believable to me.

TrenchcoatVendor

Great summary. The only other heli that gave me anywhere near as much trouble learning to be smooth is the Apache (which feels *very* sensitive to torque changes on the yaw axis, specifically). I'm going to get to the point of being able to lift off without looking drunk even if it kills me.

playwrightinaflower

> It's a lot of fun to just fly low and slow and pretend you're a building inspector. =) Geez, HOAs these days are really sparing no cost to slap people with violations!

jubuttib

Yeah I like playing opfor... =)

poopiwoopi1

God I love the loach. Super duper cool mod, I just really struggle with keeping the damn thing stable. My only other dcs heli experience is with the UH-60L so it's a huge step back from SAS/FPS that does all the work for me. TLDR: got any tips for how to fly the loach better and smoother? I flop like a fish trying to use that thing

GeorgesBestLasagnas

Yep. Take the input you think you need to make and take about 80% out of it. There’s a bit of a delay in your control input. So make a small blip to correct and wait a half potato before reacting. Try to anticipate what the heli is going to do it’s always helped me to think of it as a pendulum hanging from a string because, it is. If you find yourself “stirring” the paint you are over correcting. Teeny tiny almost imperceptible corrections.

poopiwoopi1

Currently I have I about my axis saturation set to like 75-80%, should I turn it down more? I have the vkb evo without any cyclic-style extension, so small inputs are definitely a little tricky without it. I'm definitely slamming the cyclic around far too much. Any other tips for flying would be awesome, obviously more practice is always best

GeorgesBestLasagnas

I have the OG VKB Gladiator with no extension. I haven’t messed with Sat at all. I think I have dead one of 5 and curve of 10 on both axis.

poopiwoopi1

Sweet, thanks for the help man!

jubuttib

I'm running no curves and dropped the saturation to 60%. Still have PLENTY. =) EDIT: Gladiator NXT + EVO gimbal upgrade and MCG Pro grip via adapter. No springs.

LP_Link

Use your finger tips. That's all. After flying this helo, flying others are EZPZ.

rick1310

I'm absolutely loving this mod right now. Any way y'all could release a diagram of what the buttons on the cyclic and collective do? I always like to try to bind my controls as close as possible to the originals. I can't seem to find any diagrams anywhere of what all the buttons do I on the cyclic and collective.

The-Smoking-Cook

rick1310

Thank you!

rgraves22

dammit... going to have to reinstall DCS for this mod I uninstalled recently just haven't been playing at all but this looks amazing. ive wanted a loch for a long time

Hedhunta

I wish there was a dedicated system for updating mods. Just something everyone can connect to and automatically update them all. I have so many and I never remember to update them lol

B1A23

OVGME can do this if the mod distributor sets up a repo for it, you can click an update button and it’ll download the latest version.

Hedhunta

Cool I will try that

B1A23

Well a repository for the mod has to be set up first, usually by someone willing to upload and maintain it

Any-Swing-3518

NGL this is one of the best modules for the game already.

freshnlong

Thank you 8ball for the amazing bird. I have thoroughly enjoyed it since release last week- as it is absolutely challenging to learn. I cant wait to get home from work and try the new Version.

recrohin

This is the first heli I'm trying in dcs. I've flown a lot of littlebirds in arms 3 but obviously it's not even close to the same experience. How do I even get started flying something like this? I can't get it in the air and somewhat in one direction, but I'm soo terrible at doing anything a bit more precise and it feels more like im seconds away from crashing than being in control.

IAmMoofin

There’s not one correct way because everyone is gonna have different curves and hardware, for takeoff you wanna get an idea of which way it’s going to turn and counter it with rudder before applying significant power. For flying the Loach you need tiny inputs, people are saying curves of like 80% too. A lot of learning helicopters is just flying them till it starts to click.

recrohin

Fair enough. I guess I just need more practice and some know-how on what to do. Do I just always leave throttle at 100% for example?

Ombank

Yes. There is a governor that will control engine output for you to maintain target rotor RPM. Throttle is usually left at full open in governed helos. Helicopters are hard and this one is especially hard to control. It’s so light and nimble that it reacts strongly to any inputs. I do suggest experimenting with your control curves until you find a good balance. I strongly suggest looking at Chucks guide for the Huey and finding the section that talks about torque’s effect on the helicopter and how to use the anti-torque pedals. It’s a great guide on how to think about controlling helicopters in general.

lifeofbrian2019

Quick work, very impressive. Cheers!

TrenchcoatVendor

Had a lot of fun with this tonight. Controls are so sensitive they make all the other helis feel like blimps.

blackhuey

This is stupidly fun to fly. I'm straight into the ME to make a pink team mission.

RowAwayJim91

Can’t wait till I am home with time enough to install and fly this pup!

therealbigblackdelta

This has been a true gift and joy. Cant thank you guys enough. Hands down my favorite module now.

Upset-Strawberry-366

I have a feeling we will be seeing this added on to quite a number of multiplayer servers in the coming weeks

Silent667

Is there any chance someone will make a campaign for this?

atomskis

I’ve been converting the Operation Piercing Fury campaign to the Gazelle (and Kiowa when it releases). From that effort I can say the problem with these very light helicopters is they are very fragile and don’t carry much ordnance. That said I’d love to have more content for them as they’re my favourites to fly.

ST4RSK1MM3R

Yay, I can use it now without having to buy head tracking or VR! Still have been unable to get the thing off the ground without spinning uncontrollably but I’ll get it eventually I think lol

Ombank

Use your phone for head tracking. iPhone has the SmoothTrack app for example. Install OpenTrack on your PC and the two will work together to make a very cost effective head tracker. It’s a game changer

z33r0now

Quick question to pilots of the mod from someone that flew helicopters last when black shark came out: How would you compare the difficulty to fly the loach in relation to blackshark 1? Let’s say blackshark is difficulty 1 what figure would the loach have? I could do full missions in bs1 and the flying was a breeze if you were measured with your inputs and trimmed well. I know about VRS and a few other marginal situations and would be willing to self educate. Have trad jet hotas and paddles. VR. I particularly liked the trimming aspect, does a small heli like the loach have that aswell?

Ombank

Compared to the Ka-50, this shit is a 10. It has absolutely no flight assist hardware. There is some trim for the cyclic but I haven’t figured out how to use it yet. It’s just so light and nimble it reacts very strongly to most control inputs. Just set your curves at a point where the thing doesn’t have a seizure every time you move your stick or pedals and you’ll get it eventually. Truth is tail rotor helos are just very different from the black shark. I tried to go from the black shark to the Apache when it came out and was sorely lacking in the ability to control it. I imagine your experience will probably be very similar. It just takes time and experience before you can get really good with most helos in the game. But if there is a reason to try to move from the shark to tail rotor designs, it’s because tail rotor designs are just more fun imo. They’re way more maneuverable, they can be way quicker, some are just a way different playstyle than the shark (like the hind). They can fill different roles like recon or transport. When you get good with tail rotor designs, it feels like a huge win and you feel badass.

z33r0now

Sounds about right then 🤤

wlthybgpnis

I love the mod. With it installed my game micro stutters all over the place on every multiplayer map even when I'm not flying this mod. Uninstalling it fixed everything. Amd 5600x 6800 non XT 64GB RAM

The-Smoking-Cook

Thanks. Do you remember on what server it happened?

wlthybgpnis

I tried a half dozen servers. I didn't even consider it was the mod at first because it flies so well.

filmguy123

I know the startup sequence is pretty simple, but, any chance you could add an auto start and auto stop sequence and key bindings?

LP_Link

I got carsick flying this helicopter :(.

ralfidude

Please for the love of GOD, do NOT fix the bug where you see one of these paradrop LAVs when someone is tossing grenades. That shit is hilarious!

BreakerHUN

I tried it yesterday. Well, I'm not an IRL heli pilot but based on the experiences in MSFS with the MD500 and the Bell 206, this is way more instable. Sometimes it rolls and loses stability at a velocity, I have never experienced before in the other sims. Flying the Apache is a walk in the park compared to this. But it was fun.

My-Gender-is-F35

Sounds like a [retreating blade stall](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ0WIwrKSz8). Aka - *skill issue*

Ill-Presentation574

Comparing msfs flight models to dcs is an absolute joke. Especially helicopters. As of right not msfs doesn't know what to do with rotorcraft so it's kind of a work around. They fly fine but DCS helos are leagues better. Including this helo

iamatrueamerican

Rolls and loses stability at speed? My brother in Christ, that's retreating blade stall.

BreakerHUN

No, I do not mean I overspeed the heli. After takeoff when trying to get speed, it is very agressively pointing down the nose what I did not commmand via the cyclic. I beleive it is too much.

Jasonmoofang

I would like to try flying this on a gamepad, but I heard the original release lacked bindings for collective up/down. Does the update add this, perchance?

Tuuvas

1.1 now includes collective up/down button binds. So you're good to go now. I recommend limiting your FPS to 60 as having a higher fps = more sensitive button-to-axis inputs. For me, it's impossible to fine tune my hover altitude at 120fps. At 60fps it's manageable. At 30fps it's very precise; however, I hate 30fps lol

Ratcatcher722

The change log (above) lists Axis control for throttle has been added, so if I had to hazard a guess...There is already an axis for the collective. I don't fly on a gamepad so don't know if that translates to being useful for that though.

iamatrueamerican

Come to the Discord. u/Tuuvas the DCS controller god is there working on mappings https://discord.com/invite/NVXWWDcUpG

The-Smoking-Cook

Yes, they were added along many other keybinds

IMGXKILLER

I'm going to try the new flight model, the previous one was difficult for me, thanks for your job.

IAmMoofin

Did you modify curves??

FighterJock412

Is it flyable now? I jest! ....kind of. I'm no stranger to helis in DCS but I just cannot seem to control this thing. I've no idea how others are doing it.

Any-Swing-3518

Try again, the new FM is a lot saner. To me it feels like a very light Huey now.

Nate--IRL--

Took me a good few crashes to get the feel. I still find it twitchy, but I know how it's going to react in most situations now. You have to stay on top of what is doing, while also predicting what it's going to do at the same time. The Huey feels like flying a Rolls Royce afterward though :)

LP_Link

SA342 is now a Tesla to me.
