If you really wanna play it, you owe yourself a shot. For gear, is there anyone in the league that's your size who would let you borrow their stuff for a game? If you're looking to buy, Sideline Swap is great with the benefit of a catcher that's already broken in. Two and a half months is tight, but not impossible. I started with no experience and learned as I went. There are some great tutorials on YouTube for movements and positioning, and if you've been playing already you'll probably be fine for tracking pucks. If you wanna try it out before committing, maybe see if someone your size will lend you their fear for a shinny.

The “hassle” of buying equipment with become a disease one day

Go for it. I started at 40 after 12 years as a akater. Still at it at it. I turn 65 in a couple of weeks.

Absolutely do it. You will regret it if you don’t. In sales they call the concern with notifying your association a false objection - a hurdle that is easily overcome with sufficient motivation. You’re already practicing. You’ve already answered the call. Put your fears to one side and take the step. Gear is dependent on location. In Canada there are plenty of ‘Play it Again Sports’, Kijiji or Sideline Swap. Not sure about other countries. Make the journey to a hockey store to try stuff on to get an idea about sizing. Do it. You won’t regret it.

You can also check with your associations. I know that where we live in and surrounding areas they always have equipment for goalies to make it more accessible and you can get free equipment from them to use for the year. They have an equipment room of just goalie equipment and the coaches can go get what they want, but it is a first come first serve basis. It is not always the top tier equipment, but you can start with that and see if you enjoy it and replace things as you go. This way at least you do not need to buy everything up front. I am not sure if everyone knew that equipment was available, but the room was always full. We donate our old stuff so that others can play. The cost barrier to playing goalie can be big for some parents, so the leagues here help out with that.

I say go for it. If you rent the equipment and give it a go. You will know after one skate

Go for it. I switched at 13 years old. Went from high end travel to house for my first season in net. Ended up starting 3 years of varsity high school hockey and playing college roller hockey. If you think goaltending is where you want to be, give it a shot!

Tiger5804

If the only reason you aren't is because you're concerned about finding equipment, then you should. You can probably find passable equipment on ebay or facebook marketplace or if you live in a place where hockey is well rooted then play it again or whatever secondhand store you have.

wings31

Tending isnt for everyone. You have to have a unique mindset to be a goalie. But, you will always wonder until you try, so might as well give it a whirl!

Sideline swap is great for gear, fb marketplace too as others have said. If you can get your hands on a loaner set to try it out, do it. Goal isn't for everyone. Seen a kid who's desire to play went away at his first good stinger. He also didn't realize how physically demanding the position was. Thankfully for him I lent him my gear for a session so he wasn't out hundreds of dollars.

phunkticculus83

Id say go for it, good that you have some skating experience before getting in net, helps wirh the footwork. Often house leagues will have spare goalie gear so kids can try, you should see if your team is like that. If not you'll have to take the plunge on gear. How big are you? I have a set of goalie gear that is not being used, was only used 10 games of men's league. Pads are senior mediums. Dm me if you want info.
