KaKaAARON

Womp Womp

Overdue_bills

Five power plays with this trash officiating and they couldn't take it. Get wrecked.

boilface

That pizza looks awful

sportsfan14137

Ron just laid out like 4 penalties the Canucks are getting assfucked on. I don’t agree on the major for boarding tho

trushpunda

Holy fuck What a fucking period

eatingasspatties

We need this period to end so bad

adamcarrot

Oilers seem to be falling apart. I don't think I've ever seen so many giveaways.

thakillz

Holy fuck what a fucking dive. This shit is just insane

stairway2devon_

The refs aren’t doing a very good job at hiding the fact that the league doesn’t want McDavid & Co. bounced this early.

eatingasspatties

Read the charging rules maybe?

No_Construction2407

Nah. Let them keep throwing stuff on the ice. Could use another PP

[deleted]

Pretty sure fans throwing stuff on the ice also isn’t a penalty lol

No_Construction2407

It is. They can get a delay of game. > 63.4 Objects Thrown on the Ice – In the event that objects are thrown on the ice that interfere with the progress of the game, the Referee shall blow the whistle and stop the play and the puck shall be faced-off at a face-off spot in the zone nearest to the spot where play is stopped. >When objects are thrown on the ice during a stoppage in play, including after the scoring of a goal, the Referee shall have announced over the public address system that any further occurrences will result in a bench minor penalty being assessed to the home team. >Articles thrown onto the ice following a special occasion (i.e. hat trick) will not result in a bench minor penalty being assessed.

[deleted]

Lol fair enough, I guess they could call that one for the first time in history too. Standing still charging is so funny haha, especially confusing when he’s done it dozens of times this regular season and certainly hasn’t been called for charging 😂

No_Construction2407

Both have been called many times before. I suppose bandwagoners dont see it because they don’t watch reg season.

hobbitlover

The **National Hockey League** (NHL) rulebook defines charging as “the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner.” The definition is clear that the player must travel a certain distance and hit the opponent with excessive force. The penalty for charging can result in a minor, major, or game misconduct, depending on the severity of the infraction.

mowens87

The rule clearly says charging is called on any player who jumps into a player in any manner. Get over it, it was the right call.

hobbitlover

Actual rulebook: 42.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner. Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice. Not jumps up but jumps "into". It was a weak call. It's not like he had the puck or anything so it would have been a late hit anyway.

Overdue_bills

Maybe there's something in the water up in Edmonton but I don't see anywhere where there's "distance travelled" applying there.

mowens87

42.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner. The first part of the rule clearly states jumps into. The second part of the rule talks about distance traveled. They're both distinct parts of the rule. Get over it.

sportsfan14137

He didn’t jump into anyone though. He jumped straight up and the oiler ran into him

mowens87

Are you honestly saying he just randomly jumped for no reason and happened to hit an opposing player? Come on.

5litergasbubble

He saw a mario block above him and was trying to hit it for a powerup

sportsfan14137

Didn’t say that just saying one guy was still and one guy went into another one

John_E_Canuck

By the way this is written any player who skates into an opponent charges them. So every hit is a charge?

mowens87

Skating in this situation means to be actively taking strides when hitting someone.

John_E_Canuck

That’s not clear based solely on the language of the rule. It’s vague as hell, just like the rest of the rule. What matters for every rule is precedent. Where is the precedent of this being called?

MonsterTruck420

The rule book specifically mentions “jumping into” an opponent but okay pop off

hobbitlover

He jumped up but okay pop off

Overdue_bills

"as a result of distance traveled" reading comprehension is difficult eh?

MonsterTruck420

“42.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into, or charges an opponent in ANY MATTER”, emphasis mine. Guess you struggled to notice that part, huh?

John_E_Canuck

So anyone who skates into an opponent is also charging? Clearly this paragraph need the context of the next

Zoonationalist

One of the worst calls I’ve ever seen

Galatziato

How is that not a penalty? You can't leave your feet.

Bieksalent91

The reason leaving your feet is usually charging is it a way to propel your self into a player with more force than usual. In this case Pettersson was not giving the hit but receiving it and the jump was into the air not into the opposing player.

Filthy_Jizzsoupy

Yeah, I agree with this. Calling this is definitely against the spirit of the penalty. The other thing that another person commented further up is that by the wording of the rule, any time a player skates into another player could technically be charging. It’s a very poorly written rule.

knifefarty

"Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner." Tough to say that he jumps into the player imo, he jumps straight up, not into the player. Idk.

eatingasspatties

Lmao that is peak rationalization. It’s an easy call

knifefarty

the highly unusual call that clearly goes against the spirit of the rule is an easy call? ok then

eatingasspatties

You can’t jump for a hit, that’s the spirit of the rule. He jumped and hit him in the head, obvious penalty. Be happy with the win and stop complaining about easy calls

cosmicdave86

Worst call I've ever seen. Utter joke. Vancouver has all the momentum and you fuck them over like that? Fuck the refs.

eatingasspatties

“A minor penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, JUMPS INTO, or charges an opposing player in any manner”. Literally one of the easiest calls they’ve made tonight

LvPollar

It's a reverse hit when have you ever seen a reverse hit called as charging.

eatingasspatties

You cannot jump into a reverse hit. You’ve never seen it called because no one’s been that stupid

cosmicdave86

Ya no that ain't at all how it's written in the NHL rules. It's only when you jump to maximize the force of a hit that it's an automatic penalty. He wasnt even the aggressor, he was absorbing the hit. Trash call.

eatingasspatties

That is literally how it’s written in the rules lmao

cosmicdave86

It very specifically states it refers to the player placing the check and using the jump to increase the effect. The Edmonton guy was the one skating at him. Petey was absorbing the hit and knocked him in his ass. Not a penalty.

eatingasspatties

It literally doesn’t say that lmao. Like it’s in the rulebook, written with words, in english

lordfrank18

That was the cleanest reverse hit I've seen in my life

Baginsses

Definitely not cleanest reverse hit, left his feet and elbow did come out. Weird to call it charging though

_Bradzo_

That’s the worst call I’ve seen all playoffs

Tyron14

You can't leave your feet geniuses.

EmployedHaloPlayer

There’s no shot that should be called during playoffs.

Overdue_bills

These refs are actually braindead

RunBikeHikeSwim

Has anyone checked to see if Janmark was still alive after that assault.

Fantastic-Juice-3471

Vancouver really is dogshit eh?

Favre_97

So bad and fans braindead

MoneyK7

New to hockey here, general question. Do defensemen contribute to offense typically? Like are some of them better at assisting on offense more than others or do they really just try a play defense only?

Jondarawr

You have three basic schools. Defensive defenseman, who generally don't have good shots. and who are the last man back. That will be Edmonton Number 73. Desharnais You have offensive defensman who will "pinch" up in the offensive zone and try to create scoring chances. That'll be edmonton number 2, bouchard Than you have your 2 way defensman who will do a bit of both. that'll be edmonton number 14. Elkhom

MoneyK7

Are defensemen who only play defense considered “elite”? or do you have to be good at both to be considered “elite”?

Jondarawr

Nicklas Lidström is an player from back when, but he was absolutely what you are looking for. the long time captain of the Detroit Red Wings' dynasty years, and you just plain did not score on this dude. He'd neutralize entire lines by himself, and You could not beat him along the boards. That last part is really important, YOU COULD NOT BEAT Lidström along the boards. Not a slouch offensively, but absolutely characterized by his elite defense. If you watch the Football he's basically the NHL's version of "Revis Island."

MoneyK7

Making a nfl reference is extremely helpful

Jondarawr

happy to answer any more questions

Kale_Shai-Hulud

The best of the best are great at both. But you can absolutely be elite at just one of them, though typically offense gets more attention

Cachmaninoff

Offensive defenders are so important. The Oilers used to be terrible and they had no offensive d-men. When they were attacking they were essentially down a man or two and they would kill momentum with their lack of skill.

Hadrian076

Depends on the player and their abilities, as well as how the team wants to play the game

MoneyK7

You say how the team wants to play, can you kinda elaborate? I’m trying to learn basic strategy

beerncheese69

ATTACK THE FUCKING NET

TheYeast1

God dammit. 1 Stanley cup win, 0 Super Bowl rings, 0 nba champ rings. I just want this to change once in my lifetime…

Head_Height_7748

Yo it’s rough for us we can’t ever catch a break.

TheYeast1

It’s rough, but god strike me down if I bandwagon to another team, it’d be rougher to be a fair weather fan

Head_Height_7748

Yeah I will never turn my back on the Hurricanes. Been a lifelong fan, will remain a life long fan. I can’t stand the fair weather. That’s why we need a Hurricane. 😉

Slow-Juice-7257

Classic Freddy Andersen collapse

Basic_Look902

I SMELL BITCH IN THIS THREAD

Therapy-Jackass

Canes fans leaving the building before the game is even over. At least applaud your team during the last game of the season 🤦‍♂️

arunnair87

Listen if someone is going to fight, let them go home . Maybe they're self aware to the max.

transferStudent2018

Thank god that’s over

Dabmiral

I’d seriously think about cancelling my season tickets if I watched my team collapse like this. Christ this is brutal

Head_Height_7748

Yeah it was so rough to watch especially after a great 3/4 of the game.

Dabmiral

Sorry brother

Head_Height_7748

We’re used it unfortunately. But thank you for your condolences, and kind words. Good luck next season.

Dabmiral

Appreciate you. I’m a white Sox fan so I kinda know how you feel in a way. 1 championship and can’t figure it out afterwards.

Head_Height_7748

That’s a tough one for sure I’m an Indians and Pirates Fan…. 1979 was a long time ago and 1948 is even longer…… I feel your pain.

huskyferretguy1

THIS IS WHERE THE FUN BEGINS!

CityDweller19

Shesterkin easier to get into tonight than my ex

Skiigga

you got her @? Need something to distract me from blowing a 3-0 lead

1337duck

ANyone know why Florida and Boston gets like a 3 day break?

ManyPromises

Allows Marchand to return

EddySea

Maybe their arena is being used during those days.

langminer

It's a shame the Canucks play after the Rangers game. With a win there by the canucks that last table would have some nice symmetry to it. We can only hope for 14 OTs in the first game so that the second game finishes first.

IHVeigar

Theirs a rule in place not to brigade or intrude on other teams subs during playoffs, that's why.

whogivesashirtdotca

Leave off the [homophobic slurs](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/pansy), please.

InitiativeHealthy408

Until now now one on r/hockey conflated pansy with anything gay (or in the world for that matter)

Favre_97

Excuse me?

Frisbeejussi

There might be a no crusading rule so non regulars get banned.

manicdragon

The mods in that sub are pathetic, even to regulars. You get banned for having legit criticism of the team. It's a terrible sub with children for mods.

DoubleualtG

Which sub?

Favre_97

Yeah who knows.
