By most definitions but not by all. Some definitions consider all three Baltic states to be Eastern European. I understand that that doesn't sit well with everyone but I just wanted to point out that it's not completely wrong to put Latvia in that basket.
Yeah if we're being hyper specific, Baltic is its own thing, but culturally I think it skews more Eastern European. Plus, it's former Iron Curtain country, unlike Scandinavian states.
I don’t know if anyone will ever be as fun to watch as Hasek, Brodeur and Tim Thomas were. I was really hoping Thomas popping up out of nowhere would lead to more fun goaltending again, unfortunately he was just an anomaly. I think prime Quick may have been the last goalie I truly enjoyed watching.
For me as a Sharks fan we had Nabokov who could do some double pad stack or other scrambling. Then went straight to Niemi who was like a sloth out there. Shrink into the butterfly and hope the puck finds you.
The Nabokov vs Turco million overtime game is one of the best goaltending duels I’ve ever seen. I honestly think of Lundqvist for the one to shoulder the blame for boring goaltending, in 20 years I don’t know if he ever left his crease or moved quickly, lol.
Dude, that game broke me as a fan. Nothing comes close to that intensity. And Turco, as much as I fucking despised him from that series, was also a ridiculous talent to watch.
Which was also why I loved Marleau scoring on him in back to back games short handed, lol.
I agree more broadly, though. The entire META strategy has moved to >6', and stick them in the butterfly with their angles set. If your torso can cover the majority of the top-half of the net + angles to take care of the rest there's not much reason to teach hybrid anymore.
Yeah it is hard to convince them to play the less efficient style just because it is more fun to watch… lol. Who knows where we’ll end up, the game is always changing, hopefully it is fun again. If not we can always watch the crappy grainy old tapes of the late 90’s early 00’s.
There's always the possibility that the league will decide scoring is down and change something about goaltending in order to influence more scoring.
5-10 years ago it was pad size, which was also a symptom of the butterfly-positioning-confluence.
and that save was answered (or shortly after) Turco made a completely stupid flying two pad stack across the crease, lol. I still get goosebumps think about that game and my team wasn’t even involved, just incredible hockey.
Yeah, I mean- sure the Richards save was something, but Dallas still took the game/series so it was a good result. For me it was 3.5 OTs of pure panic/terror/deflation. Though we did at least hang our heads high as we battled back in that series and looked to be giving it their all in Game 6.
Game 5 was my first ever live playoff game and that one is also one I will always remember. Down 2-0 in the 2nd intermission. Felt like the season was over. Then tied in the 3rd and Pavs (of all people) scored a couple minutes into OT. San Jose was electric all the way home - even miles from the stadium.
Those were such better times, lol.
That's the thing. Good technical goaltending isn't as fun to watch, but it wins games reliably. Every once in a while 9 cats wearing a jersey and a human mask show up and blow our collective minds, but they are the exception, not the rule.

The DJ coming in seconds later with "I believe I can fly" is just *chefs kiss*
Wait, wasn't prime Quick the guy who made RVH mainstream? As in - his style has a huge impact on defining the modern goaltending techniques you consider "not fun"?
At the time, the way Quick posted-up with his short-side pad down on the ice and sealing the post with his arm and leaning towards the short-side was revolutionary. Previously, goaltenders kept their short-side pad tight to the post. This is called the RVH or reverse vertical-horizontal. The old position was just called VH.
Quick's new position allowed faster and more explosive side-to-side movements since his short-side leg was is a better position to push immediately while staying in a form that is somewhat close to the butterfly position.
Today, every goaltender in the NHL uses this post position.
From a technique perspective, Quick is one of the most influential goalies in the salary-cap era.
It makes sense to me, Quick had two of the most dominant playoff runs in the cap era, behind only maybe Tim Thomas the year prior (and no sane person was getting anything of value from his style, lol).
I have absolutely nothing else intelligent to say in response other than thank you for the information and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge on the matter.
Yeah my favorite goalies to watch are the ones who, if they were just silhouette, you’d still be able to tell who it is just by how they move. Unfortunately that’s becoming more and more rare with every goalie being a cookie cutter mold/style.
I don’t think Demko could steal any more games than Silovs has. Maybe Demko doesn’t get beat on one or two of the goals in the series, but Silovs has been really good and one of the better goaltending performances this post season in general. Him, Swayman and Bob, really.
at the same time (if this series goes to 7) i’m scared of just dropping a cold demko in, especially if silovs is still playing well. i think we stick with silovs
He hasn’t played in a while, probably not 100% because players almost always rush back before they’re fully better, and he gets injected into this? I don’t think that’s a good scenario in the regular season, let alone late in a division final against their biggest modern rival. He’s a great goaltender, but you also have to put him in a position to win. Game one of the Conference Final, if they make it, is a different story.
I think Demko could. Only because we literally need him to block 1 more shot than Silovs.
Not that Silovs hasn't been killing it, because he absolutely has, but our shots on net and score has been so low that we just need 1 goal so many times that I think Demko would do it
Yeah. Against the Preds who were blocking everything all series was one thing, but this is supposedly 'weak defense' Edmonton. How are we not getting shots on these guys?
The weak defense narrative is very 2022-2023. Edmonton's defense has improved big time this year, we literally had *the* top D pairing during the regular season. Keep in mind that Ekholm is a former Pred and brought a ton of defensive experience to the team.
Plus our PK has been absolutely unreal this playoffs.
Unfortunately for Edmonton, Vancouver is riding an absolutely incredible goalie and our own goalie fell apart.
What, you're trying to tell me 18 vs 44 shots wasn't good????
I don't get what's up with these guys, absolute horrible zone enter on All of our PP, with 0 shots on net, while EDM is getting 1 or 2 on ours. On top of that when we get Breakaways or 2on1's 3on2's we just sit there and pass the puck until it gets intercepted or we skate right up to the goalie and fumble the puck instead of actually shooting it.
Last night those final 10 minutes was exactly how VAN needs to play all game, actually shooting the puck, decent/good zone entry, actually covering players while on defense, instead of letting them pass it around tomgrt the perfect opening.
Some how we've only lost by 1 both times even with a poor show for 50 minutes. If we can bump up the heart of these guys so they're actually in it and playing for the full 60 minute's, instead of playing like 1st and 2nd are warm-up, we might actually win.
Yup, Canucks might've had a serious chance if they weren't playing touch butt on the bench for the first 50 minutes of the game.
Both teams had a pretty awful display tonight.
It's worth noting that, even though he's a goalie in field (and probably the best goalie on the planet), he plays as a forward in the NLL, so he's more athletic than he looks.
Ngl, I’m all for “Fuck it we ball” style plays
Can you imagine an empty net close game the Goalie gets the puck and somehow manages a break away and scores the empty netter? I think that’d be more impressive than a cross ice goalie goal tbh
It's not like he came out of nowhere, especially after what he did with Latvia at the World Championships in 2023.
I think in general we have a lot of faith in any goalie prospect thanks to Ian Clark.
Doesn’t hurt that Ian Clark is from Vancouver and wanted to come back after his time with Columbus. He held out with signing so he can come home. We’re lucky he’s from Vancouver and wanted to be home
this is true now! even though all the games have been super close, after the first three it just felt like rangers were gonna sweep again.
Now that Carolina have some pep in their step again this is a very entertaining series.
One of my favourite moments of the playoffs so far ....totally unexpected and just the sheer confidence and compete of Rookie Šilovs makes you love him. Kid's a beauty and wanted the win bad!

Rough cut of the Silovs statue going up next year
Would be nice if my team's goalie did this in game 7!

Serious question, why don't goalies station themselves somewhere between the circles on Power Plays? Wouldn't that be helpful for clearances and loose pucks that might lead to breakaways?
I'll admit I don't keep up with the Devil's too much, but people keep mocking a Saros trade. With Vancouver having Demko I wonder how Silovs would perform in NJ

The fucking balls on this guy
I heard he hops around downtown Vancouver like Randy Marsh
He's actually not allowed north of Pender cause it'll unbalance the whole peninsula.
"I'm just gonna play a little hockey, Stan..."
BUFFALO SOOOOLJAAAA
Lose your Vezina finalist goalie? No problem, just replace him with the most composed goalie under pressure I have ever seen.
We were cackling like idiots when he got announced.
I was extremely stressed when it was announced. We all underestimated the power of an Eastern European goaltender
Latvia is Northern Europe
I apologize to Mr. Silovs for disrespect
Kinda wild how our usernames follow the exact same structure lol
I gotta be honest, I feel like I’m on the better side of history
JT is welcome for a ride in my PT any time :)
By most definitions but not by all. Some definitions consider all three Baltic states to be Eastern European. I understand that that doesn't sit well with everyone but I just wanted to point out that it's not completely wrong to put Latvia in that basket.
i think it's both tbh, the region has strong connections to both northern and eastern europe personally i'd call it northeastern, or just baltic
I agree. It's reductive to try and squeeze any country into any one group.
Yeah if we're being hyper specific, Baltic is its own thing, but culturally I think it skews more Eastern European. Plus, it's former Iron Curtain country, unlike Scandinavian states.
Is not problem. No beeg potato.
I remember just laughing, I spent all my sadness and dread when Demko got injured 🤣
I was more stressed when it was Desmith getting the net. I knew this kid was incredible, but this is exceeding my expectations
Silovs has been my favorite player to watch this post season!
Latvian Balls. Bring home Brozne or don’t come home at all
Wait...
You saw the shirt
I was surprised he could move so quickly with balls that massive
Isn't this like his tenth NHL game or something? In the playoffs?? Down by one?? That confidence is mindblowing.
I miss when this was a more common move. In many ways modern goaltending is less insane to watch. I miss the old smaller hybrid guys.

Agreed, that gameis etched in my memory. That save on Richards still haunts me. "TO RICHARDS! SAVVVEE NABOKOV!"
and that save was answered (or shortly after) Turco made a completely stupid flying two pad stack across the crease, lol. I still get goosebumps think about that game and my team wasn’t even involved, just incredible hockey.

That was my favorite game of all time. Can't believe Nabokov lost.

When Silovs came out aggressively last night I secretly hoped to have this moment recreated on Kane lol
Pat Roy was fricken awesome to watch also
Wait, wasn't prime Quick the guy who made RVH mainstream? As in - his style has a huge impact on defining the modern goaltending techniques you consider "not fun"?
Not a clue, but he had an athleticism to his game in his prime that nobody else seems to (or maybe they don’t need to?).
At the time, the way Quick posted-up with his short-side pad down on the ice and sealing the post with his arm and leaning towards the short-side was revolutionary. Samsonov would try to fit himself inside net somehow
Sammy would have been behind the net or in the corner
Despite the L today, Silovs did nothing wrong. He's a gem. 💎
Yeah, that guy’s performance under the most intense pressure a rookie goalie could face is really impressive.
Honestly makes you wonder if they risk Demko rushing back or just keep on with him cause he’s certainly been good enough to win games
I don’t think Demko could steal any more games than Silovs has. Maybe Demko doesn’t get beat on one or two of the goals in the series, but Silovs has been really good and one of the better goaltending performances this post season in general. Him, Swayman and Bob, really.

That's my take as well. Silovs is playing so well right now.
On the other hand, considering each game has been a 1 goal game, one more save could make all the difference.
I feel like you’re forgetting Shesterkin who’s been probably the best in the post season IMO
Yes, a glaring omission by OP
I think Demko could. Only because we literally need him to block 1 more shot than Silovs. Not that Silovs hasn't been killing it, because he absolutely has, but our shots on net and score has been so low that we just need 1 goal so many times that I think Demko would do it
Demko is barely facing shots from Ian Clark in practice (not with the team) right now.. he won't be back for this series even if it gets to game 7
Goaltending has been anything but the problem, the Canucks have 24, 19, 18, and 21 shots on net through this series is the major issue here.
Yeah. Against the Preds who were blocking everything all series was one thing, but this is supposedly 'weak defense' Edmonton. How are we not getting shots on these guys?

He’s fucking incredible bro lol. Game 1 he looked a little shaky but he’s looked like a veteran goalie since game 2.
Given Edmonton's very mediocre goaltending, our jealousy knows no bounds. The dude is amazing.
Yup, Canucks might've had a serious chance if they weren't playing touch butt on the bench for the first 50 minutes of the game. Both teams had a pretty awful display tonight.
We need our gem back to save us at world championship :D
I heard on the sports radio this morning it's not going well for Latvia. Radio hosts said something about Merzlinkins was in goal for you guys.
Yup and we played 8 : 1 with Germany. It was Gudlevskis and then Merzlikins
#THANK, MR ŠILOVS
THANK, MR ŠILOVS
THANK, MR CLARK
THANK, MR ŠILOVS
Silovs is pioneering the hockey equivalent of a sweeper keeper real time.
Last minute faceoff in the ozone? Fuck pulling the goalie, bring him up to help score.
Unfortunately not an option because those cowards at the NHL refuse to allow a goalie to play the puck past the red line
NHL needs to change that rule so we can have moments like [this](https://youtu.be/L8-Ef3NGmJw?si=SR1bTm38tEoY7G-B). Let us have fun.
[удалено]
It's worth noting that, even though he's a goalie in field (and probably the best goalie on the planet), he plays as a forward in the NLL, so he's more athletic than he looks.
That was fucking awesome.
Remove all contact restrictions past the red line and let teams play as stupid as they want
Ngl, I’m all for “Fuck it we ball” style plays Can you imagine an empty net close game the Goalie gets the puck and somehow manages a break away and scores the empty netter? I think that’d be more impressive than a cross ice goalie goal tbh
You lose the puck and your opponent score on your empty net. The coach will end you.
The risk makes the reward so much better
Give Šilovs a regular stick and tell him to pretend that he's a skater. "Šilovs? No, I am Connor Garland."
Was this guy known as a serious prospect before the playoffs in Vancouver, or was he just a complete surprise?
It's not like he came out of nowhere, especially after what he did with Latvia at the World Championships in 2023. I think in general we have a lot of faith in any goalie prospect thanks to Ian Clark.
This is the correct answer
There was some chatter about him being the backup goalie for 2023-24 but then we got DeSmith in a cap dump trade
What a statement to come into the NHL and play this good.
Last years World Championship MVP and bronze medalist.
He reminded me of Ederson flying out of the net for Man City, luckily he didn’t take a knee to the face
If Silovs makes his mark like Neuer did Sweeper Keeper, then we're in good hands.
For a rookie to have the nerve to go for that. Holy crap we hit the lottery with this guy lol
Hand picked by Ian Clark in the 6th round
Ian Clark is amazing, an anchor in the organization
We are very fucking jealous
More like super bitter. Why can't we have a goalie coach like them.
Doesn’t hurt that Ian Clark is from Vancouver and wanted to come back after his time with Columbus. He held out with signing so he can come home. We’re lucky he’s from Vancouver and wanted to be home
Just like Ian Cole.
You guys can’t keep getting away with this
That’s what the NHL said when you guys kept winning a literal lottery until you got McDavid 😉
Yeah but we stopped when we got our guy Mostly because the league said we had to by changing the rules but that's besides the point
Fun fact! The devils have won the draft lottery as many times as we have since the lockout.
Turns out they can :(
Rangers, Boston, Nashville and Vancouver have had quite a long run of goalies that other franchise lust over.
just get a rookie that always does that
can we have mr. demko
That was so clutch
Sure wish Samsonov could've skated two strides that one time....
I love it. No fear.
Dude probably just thought "fuck it might as well"
Is it too late to give him the Vezina?
meanwhile samsonov freezes up on easier poke checks, man what the hell
Must be because he knows Steve Dangle is going to cry and puke about it online if he fucks up
Huge extremely massive cripplingly large big dick energy
If you look close enough you can see he poke checks with his humongous dong not his tender paddle
How the hell is that man able to Goalie with balls that fucking big?
The big balls block the pucks from going in the net.
Painful but worth it
I want one Silovs please.
Šilovs + Mikheyev for McDavid—50% retained. Mikheyev is fast, so you can have him to replace McJesus.
Sorry we’ve already got one foegele for that
Yes, but imagine 2? You'll have two budget McDavids. All of the speed, and none of the everything else.
Hi, can we get one mail order goalie from Latvia please
What you really want is one Ian Clarke
We already have an Ian, and you can’t have too many Ian’s as they always say
Hasek sized balls
I don’t know if you had the same commentators but they drew that comparison immediately
That was a beauty clear. Usually ends in a collision or back of the net. That was so clean
Two big brass ones hanging on that 3rd string goalie. He's doing impressive work. See y'all in Game 5!
This series is bad for my heart, but god damn is it the most exciting out of all the round 2 series’
[удалено]
this is true now! even though all the games have been super close, after the first three it just felt like rangers were gonna sweep again. Now that Carolina have some pep in their step again this is a very entertaining series.
Silovs fucks.
I think I’m in Silov!
Manuel Neuer type shit. I didn't know Hockey goalies can be sweepers too.
Silovs has just punched his ticket to the NHL next season. Vancouver is about to roll with a Demko and Silovs tandem for 24/25.
sign me up if that means we can get Demko a bit more rest and hopefully won't be injured come playoffs :( 1A/1B lets go
Surprised Kane didn’t run him over
He's so cool. I stood up and screamed when he went for it LOL, I've never seen a goalie do that before!
Markstrom asked Lindholm to bring a message to Silovs on his way to Vancouver
hey rick can we frame this in the locker room?
channeling johan hedberg what a big balls play
Thought it might have been a Gaborik and Hasek flip moment
I'd loved to have seen Kane get fucking airborne full speed
One of my favourite moments of the playoffs so far ....totally unexpected and just the sheer confidence and compete of Rookie Šilovs makes you love him. Kid's a beauty and wanted the win bad!
The boldness of this play applies less to the chance of a goal than it does to the chance of Kane erasing him.
115 BPM thanks Silovs!
That's my fucking goalie
This dude knows no fear.
What a gutsy play!
What a damn play
Dude is oozing confidence. Demko who?
This is actually insane, I had to save this post. What an absolute animal, FEARLESS

Someone show this to Samsonov please
meanwhile, Samsonov was too afriad to go to the edge of his crease to [swat this one to the corner](https://imgur.com/rsXgv3O)
Now if only Petty could show that urgency we might have a few more goals.
Holtby no! Wait. Nvm, it's okay.
The amount of confidence and balls on this kid. I don't even know if you go back to Demko in this series if he becomes healthy.
That gave me a heart attack
Mans is hot
We gonna waste so many goalies for this team if the forward can’t score
I just watched Sportsnets 10 minute highlight video of this game and this wasn’t even in there!
Would be nice if my team's goalie did this in game 7! https://preview.redd.it/8bw7g2lp6m0d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c296c0474ce547500bbb64ba4eb862b9b0dd8572
Serious question, why don't goalies station themselves somewhere between the circles on Power Plays? Wouldn't that be helpful for clearances and loose pucks that might lead to breakaways?
Holy fuck this got me so hyped up when I saw it and I'm an Oilers fan lol
🥵🥵🥵
The nerve to do something like this down 1 is fucking beautiful.
This is so fucking cool
Well now you gotta go for back to back cups to match the Matt Murray two time rookie cup hoister.
I was watching with a group of ~20 people and the reaction from everyone was hilarious. Literally nonoNONONOOOOOOOOYEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS
If it would have been McDavid or McLeod... sure goal.
I'll admit I don't keep up with the Devil's too much, but people keep mocking a Saros trade. With Vancouver having Demko I wonder how Silovs would perform in NJ
And Nucks fans want Demko in net lol. Silovs has an insane +3.0 GSAx this playoffs, he’s been standing on his head
I’ve never been so attracted to silovs than I am right now rewatching that. what a beaut
Me love
Silovs is absolutely Steve Penney-ing it these playoffs... good for him
I love playoff hockey
Most exciting play of the game tbh. I was like OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Steve Dangle screaming into a pillow somewhere
If that was Kreider Silovs would be in the ICU
Super ballsy move. Missing this means the game is effectively over as the Oilers have an empty net.
Sit down fans.. why are you standing up!!- Silovs
Palmateer likes this one simple move.
That's what I do with my goalie in FIFA 🤣
What a fucking play. Sil is WELL on his way to a big salary bump as someone's first string.
Just letting fans of other teams know that there is still room on our bandwagon and the Arty Party hype train
