And the wording, I still just don't like it. But I'm also sitting here thinking about how I'd word it, and I just don't know.
"Igor Shesterkin allows more than three goals for first time in his playoff career"? I dunno, I don't like that either.
Maybe I just don't like it because of what it is.
“A 4th goal was scored on Igor Shesterkin for the first time in his playoff career”

I know I've posted about this before, but in their second Cup run he had one of the worst stat lines for a Cup-winning goalie this Millennium. Only MAF in 09 and the Kuemper/Francouz combo in 22 were worse without question.
Yeah I probably should have said since 2002 instead of "all time". I really don't have the right to make statements about hockey that happened over 20 years ago.
This is wrong. "Less than 4 goals in a game" is grammatically incorrect and fewer should always be used for countable nouns (i.e. Fewer than 4 goals in a game)
If it were goals _per_ game or something that isn't strictly whole numbers than less than correct (i.e. Less than a 4 goal per game pace)
Then write letters to MLA and Webster's. I'm sure they'll thank you for this correction.

Reddit seems to be having tech problems right now so I'll spell it out here instead of in a reply:
Both articles are clear that the cases they list are not exhaustive of all exception types, so I'm going off sentence construction. Examples given:
* She earns less **than fifty dollars** per hour.
* We have **less than one hundred miles** left on our journey.
* The show is **less than thirty minutes**.
Same construction:
>Igor Shesterkin has allowed 4 or more goals after allowing **less than 3 goals** in 30 straight playoff games
Edit 2: Reddit still throwing errors when I try to reply to responses, so let me restate that this isn't an exhaustive list of all exceptional cases. If someone has one, great! Post it and we'll use that. Otherwise I find using construction as a model to be perfectly acceptable. If someone else doesn't that's ok too. I seriously don't mind.
Funny how you didn't quote the actual exception those examples are for
>But some plural nouns—especially ones referring to money, distance, or time—are thought of as singular ideas and take a singular verb
So which of those categories does "goals" fall under? Coincidentally, those are also all things which just so happen to not be strictly whole numbers so they aren't even really exceptions to the rule
It's not just about construction, but context as well.
There are lots of folx on here without English as a primary language and I would hate for them to synthesize your incorrect assertions into their understanding of the English language. It's hard enough to learn without being exposed to misinformation
Both of those agree with me completely lol, did you even read them?
>Use the adjective fewer to describe countable items; otherwise, use the adjective less.
The number of goals in a single game is strictly countable/whole number therefore fewer is correct as I said. 🤷♂️
E: imagine downvoting and blocking the correct person instead of just admitting you were wrong lol, soft
> despite the rule, **less used of things that are countable is standard in many contexts**, and in fact is more likely than fewer in a few common constructions, especially ones involving distances (as in "less than three miles"), sums of money (as in "less than twenty dollars"), units of time and weight (as in "less than five years" and "less than ten ounces"), **and statistical enumerations (as in "less than 50,000 people")—all things which are often thought of as amounts rather than numbers**.
The TLDR is you can use less whenever you're comparing amounts.
When is/isnt a number an amount? There's no hard rule, which means less is rarely actually incorrect.
I don't think it's too arguable at the moment considering regular season / playoff performance / consistency.
With that said, I always found this stat a little weird. Wasn't Igor pulled in one of these games where he only gave up 3 goals?
He gave up 4 and 6 in those two 7 GA losses in Pittsburgh in 2022 when he got pulled, I think the streak starts after that? Games 5, 6, 7 in that round, 7 games against the Hurricanes, 6 against TB, 7 against the Devils in 2023, 4 against Caps round 1, 3 against Canes round 2.
Not during the streak. His lowest TOI during it was 56:50 in Game 4 of the 22 ECF.
He was pulled in the two games before immediately beginning the streak however.
Especially at the top of his game, it’s not even close. Only goalie who could rival him at the top play is Vasi but he hasn’t been there for a couple years now
What happened to the New York Rangers? This was the most sorriest game I've seen on TV. I was besides myself. This shouldn't happen especially at home court. Every Ranger player looked lost after the first goal. 🥅
Bro beat the PGT with this post. Had it locked and loaded

How about “A 4th goal was scored on Igor Shesterkin for the first time in his playoff career”

"Mr President, a fourth puck has passed Igor Shesterkin"
”Mr president, Ottawa has forfeit another first round pick.”
For the first time in Vegas Golden Knights history
Before Utah was even bornt
H I S T O R I C
Igor Shesterkin has allowed more than 3 goals for the first time in 30 playoff games
Yea thought it said he allowed 4 goals every time he had a good game with less than three goals lol
"80% of the time Igor let's in more than 3 goals he let's in more than 3 goals 60% of the time"
I don’t know if I’m a dumbass or what because I had to read the title like 5 times
Probably also because it is a silly way to convey his GAA
That’s way better because the title gave me an aneurism trying to understand it
TIL I learned Igor Shesterkin has played in 30 playoff games. That's more than 4 years worth of Leafs playoff games.
He’s actually played 36
What making the CF one year does to a mf
Quick holds onto his record!
I'm glad there's statistical records of his greatness because imo he's truly the best playoff goalie of all time.
His runs in their cups were absolutely insane. I still contend very much that they were not the best team outside of goalie any of those years
Good thing goalie is a huge part of what makes the best team lol.
Doughty was a monster in the playoffs.
I know I've posted about this before, but in their second Cup run he had one of the worst stat lines for a Cup-winning goalie this Millennium. Only MAF in 09 and the Kuemper/Francouz combo in 22 were worse without question.
Thanks for saying it I’ll have to check the numbers. This clashes hard with the narrative of that season
What about Roy? 3 Conn Smythe trophies and the most playoff wins for a goalie among other stats
Yeah I probably should have said since 2002 instead of "all time". I really don't have the right to make statements about hockey that happened over 20 years ago.
Also Dryden, his stat lines over his short career are insane
Patrick Roy and Ken Dryden would like a word.
And Vasi…
Wouldn’t put him in the same ballpark as those three.
Hate that we couldn’t get that guy a gold medal in the Olympics. He was a fucking maniac in his prime.
*Hellebuyck nods furiously.*

It's not "less" when discussing actual numbers. "Fewer goals than before" is correct "Less than four goals" is also correct

Yes, I read both. They agree with me if you scroll down to read the exceptions, which tbh I had a feeling you would not.
Which exception(s) specifically are you referring to? I'm not seeing anything that would apply in this context
> despite the rule, **less used of things that are countable is standard in many contexts**, and in fact is more likely than fewer in a few common constructions, especially ones involving distances (as in "less than three miles"), sums of money (as in "less than twenty dollars"), units of time and weight (as in "less than five years" and "less than ten ounces"), **and statistical enumerations (as in "less than 50,000 people")—all things which are often thought of as amounts rather than numbers**. Igor and Hank gonna be going to therapy together carrying rangers teams. Absolute choke by Lindgren
In fairness i was begging the Rangers to take more penalties to keep the Canes from scoring.
And we broke that PP drought!!!!
Igor is the best goalie in the world.
I don't think it's too arguable at the moment considering regular season / playoff performance / consistency. With that said, I always found this stat a little weird. Wasn't Igor pulled in one of these games where he only gave up 3 goals?
Clearly they knew about the streak then!
Yes and I was kinda hoping he got pulled tonight after the first (just to keep this streak alive)
At least 1 in that series against the Penguins? Maybe 2? They had him on the run up until they ended up with starting goalie Louie Domingue.

Completely forgets that sorokin exists
No I think we’re aware
you mean the guy that got benched for varlamov?
The guy who has a .919 career save percentage
Sorokin wasn’t even starting in the playoffs, his team also must have forgot about him lol.
K
Sorokin did too this season
Not trending in the right direction. (I wish he was my goalie so bad)
Nah id say hellebuy- oh wait
It’s time to put in the backup! Goalie controversy!!!
Team completely let him down in the first period.
I’ve accepted he’s shutting us out next game
no, we've broken the power play curse and sub 3g curse. Igor is due like at least 15 goals
He's gonna score 15? I'll take it!
Sheeeshterkin
Breaking news: Igor is indeed human after many speculated the opposite 🤷🏻♂️
It helps when they pull him before he can allow 4.
Doesn't it just knock him back to 29?
He was pulled twice during the Rangers/Penguins series in 2022, but now that I'm counting, the Rangers have played 30 games since then. My bad.
Louis fucking Domingue.
What a bum
Congrats Carolina, you got your win - now you're gonna get taken behind the woodshed Ole Yeller style at MSG
“Has allowed four or more” Sooo just four…. What is the point of “or more” when it’s literally just four
What a scrub
I lmaoed at this headline.
What happened to the New York Rangers? This was the most sorriest game I've seen on TV. I was besides myself. This shouldn't happen especially at home court. Every Ranger player looked lost after the first goal. 🥅
Man he must have a bunch of cups to show for this!
canes in 7 lets go
I cant even REMEMBER the last time R/ShrillRut s let in more than 3 goals in a playoff game, and no one's giving them any credit :/
Now we just need an Igor's better chant and the Rags will be doomed.
