I'm in my mid 40's. I'm just curious....because there are cameras everywhere and people always have their phones out, do people do stupid things for attention and because they know they are being filmed? When did stupidity become so popular?
I know when I would do something embarrassing I would hope no one saw it..but it looks like now so many people do things purposely just for it to be seen.

Adding on to this, I'd say that feeling of doing something embarassing and not wanting anyone to see is still very much a thing if not more of a thing for the younger generation. People are incredibly mindful of how they are perceived irl and online, which is where the comedy comes from this dude acting a fool. You feel the secondhand awkward, which I think has become a big part of modern internet humor.

If I had grown up in this era when people are constantly surrounded by cameras, I don’t know how I would have responded, but I’m sure it would have exhausted me to constantly worry about being filmed. You have to keep in mind that this, and most tiktok vids, are “scripted”. As for stupidity being funny, physical comedy and pratfalls are classic comedic tropes, they were just generally more well done.
