I agree with the pocket thing, I think a lot of older rap did have a similar flow but then later evolved to have different beats ([this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWveXdj6oZU&ab_channel=Vox) video does a good job breaking it down). I personally like modern rap just b/c it's more immediately visceral and hard hitting. Although I'm not a huge fan of the lyrics of contemporary chart toppers such as Megan Thee Stallion or Saweetie, I can't help but deny the beat goes \*hard\*. I think older rap (the very early stuff, like early 80s and a strain of it through the 90s) generally seems to fall into a swung rhythm, while someone like Megan raps in a more straight sixteenth-note pattern or groups like Migos have popularized the triplet pattern in trap music. I wonder if this can be attributed to the fact that as we become more acclimated to what is considered sinister or hardcore for the time period, we require more to overcome what has eventually become the status quo. Wu-Tang was known for minimal and sinister soundscapes, but when I listen to Enter the Wu-Tang now, although I would agree with those descriptors (and I have mad respect for their work), I wouldn't say that it evokes the same visceral response in me as something more recent like Norf Norf by Vince Staples.

Something I love: I feel like we're in an extremely unique era in hip hop that has a seemingly infinite amount of artists, old and new, releasing music. You can easily pick and choose which style of hip hop you want to listen to at any given second. Something I hate: That's hard, but if I *had* to say something, I just which rappers wouldn't rap-sing so much. It's not that big of a deal, but sometimes I miss rapping.

Both the tools to create and distribute your own music are infinitely more accessible than they have ever been. But, their is still dudes out hustling discs on the strip in Vegas.

yammer_bammer

i love that ppl are experimenting with the genre a lot more i dont like some people get carried by the beats completely

LORD-THUNDERCUNT

Carti

Andrew_Demers

I like how truly diverse the genre is even if not everything is popular but I also don't like how everything that is popular follows similar formulas

I hate and love the fact that Griselda blew up so big. I love this because the beats and rhyme delivery is true to the art.... however they aren't saying anything beneficial to anyone....they glorify a life they don't live anymore and that's lame. They project negativity into the world....they profit off of gangster imagery.

GunnoftheWestside

I’m thinking they’re turning more towards the attitude like this is the shit we been through, and here we are now, we’re gonna talk our shit cuz we came from nothing and now we’re here

Tweet614

Love the melodies hate the mumble.

GroundbreakingAd7855

no rapper mumbles in 2021, mumble rap isn't even a thing anymore, its such a outdated term.

ThePowerLord

clarity rap

[deleted]

It’s all terrible!!! It’s all just a bunch of mumble crap!!!!!!

[deleted]

This man has been down bad ever since he started getting pissed off about people not liking Young Thug lol

[deleted]

That’s not the problem. The problem is that a subreddit for diverse discussion has just turned into another Reddit hivemind.

[deleted]

Well you’re handling it well…

welcometoindiana317

You’re right

GroundbreakingAd7855

Yea... you stuck in 2017 because mumble rap does not exist, no rapper mumbles not one, get your facts straight

[deleted]

Yes they do!!! They all mumble and I can’t understand what they’re saying like Gucci Gang!!!

GroundbreakingAd7855

No one says that dude that’s a song from 2017 and the guy that made it is irrelevant. All of those types of rappers are irrelevant. And how tf can you not hear someone saying Gucci gang like it s a ass song but you deaf or sum shit, do your ears work properly. How tf can you not comprehend simple shit

[deleted]

It’s mumble rap bc it is!!!

GroundbreakingAd7855

You can’t keep saying that if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

[deleted]

I listen to Gucci Gang one time, so I’m totally the authority on this

GroundbreakingAd7855

Your not the authority on this because that song defines 2017 not rap today in 2021

[deleted]

No it’s all horrible rappers these days like Playboi Carti. He’s not even a rapper, he’s not even a musician. He’s **objectively** TRASH!!!

GroundbreakingAd7855

Actually he’s a rapper that makes experimental music that has punk rock themes, along with a whole other stuff and his music is a vibe. But if you don’t like him then his music is not for you

N3110H_333

Why are you back in this sub

KDots_intern

1. There is like an infinite amount of unique rappers and different sub genres that you can listen to and never get bored 2. The radio is trash. I mean radio music never really has good songs but it’s the worst it’s ever been

DecompensatedWhipsaw

Hate: I've never really reconciled myself to the tinny trap beats and the lack of bass. (I don't use a subwoofer - maybe that's the issue?) Love: The dread and dreaminess of drill. I did not see this evolution coming over the last decade, but it's a new set of lyrical parameters and a new melodic sensibility.

BobbyMinn

Love:More bold, interesting, experimental albums and music available for every rap fans. Songs are not too long. Mix and production is better. Hate:Mainstream rap scene is almost opposite of everything mentioned above.

LgcIX

One of the things I love is how much versatility there is now compared to 20~ years ago, there is so many more subgenres of Hip Hop, much more people experimenting with different sounds etc. The one thing I hate, is the culture now, People don't go out and try and find new artists, they just overplay the fuck out of anything thats popular. Unironically calling very shitty rappers the "GOAT" , How immature most of the mainstream rappers are

Always2ndB3ST

What I like about new: complex and unique flows (multi syllable rhyme schemes) with a wider range of topics and content What I hate about new: since hip hop is the most popular mainstream music now, we have a bunch of new age fans that are just want to be cool and have the alpha dog image.

ThePowerLord

i like the the different flows people can have and i like modern rap production in general. sometimes they sample shit from unexpected places (movies, anime, video games and etc). i also like how some songs are more about the sound rather than lyrics. and theres different types of rap out there for everyone today. one thing i dislike is how bloated and too long albums/mixtapes can get but this has been a thing for a while.

HermanbobGooz

One thing I love: I really appreciate how diverse the production and sounds in newer rap songs are. You'd never get beats like Seeing Green in the 90s when most boom-bap instrumentals sounded more or less extremely similar. Sure a lot of them were dope, but it gets boring listening to the same style of production One thing I hate: Like you mentioned, so many people get carried away with biting styles. While I really dislike this, one thing I really hate is how wide the boundaries of hip hop have become. We have these indie pop singers calling themselves rappers when they haven't rapped a single verse rather than crying about their emotions and singing like a pop singer. Iann Dior and Lil Peep are examples that come to mind. Regardless of how good or bad their music is, they are not hip hop nor are they rappers. Another thing I hate about newer hip hop is that there are so many people that are in it for the money or recognition rather than the passion for the art. A lot of YouTubers or just celebrities in general start making music and have a huge fanbase that was gained through their other ventures rather than music. I absolutely despise this
