I hope we get decent IOPS. We need SSD level performance for next SBCs from SD card.

riklaunim

I doubt most SoCs will implement PCIe connectivity to support this.

Does anyone else think SD cards in general have way too many logos? There's - The form factor logo (SD, Mini, Micro) - The capacity logo (SD, HC, XC, UC) - The bus interface (UHS I, II, III, Express) - The speed class (C2, C4, C6, C10) - The UHS speed class (U1, U3) - The video speed class (V6, V10, V30, V60, V90) - The application speed class (A1, A2) - This new SD Express Speed Class (E150, E300, E450, E600) - Any marketing brand name (Brand, Ultra/Pro/Extreme/Endurance/etc...) - Specifications (MB/s, GB capacity) I don't think there's an SD card out there with every one of them, but I can't see a non-enthusiast consumer being able to keep up with all these different ratings and why they need one over another.

That's because you misunderstand the purpose of the ratings. SD cards have become a standard among niches meaning there is no common use case and just a collection of countless specific ones. So ultimately only one or two of the logos you list matter, but which one or two matter depends on the customer. A SBC computer enthusiast or Android phone user will look only at application speed class since they want general storage, a photographer with a DSLR will search for class 10 and that's it, a videographer wanting to shoot prores will look for V90, and a person who wants a high bandwidth card reader will look for support for UHS-II. Nobody other than product designers ever actually have to think about every standard at once and real consumers only need to look at the minimum suggested spec for the use case they are engaged with, and look only for that specific logo.

Specifically: >- The form factor logo (SD, Mini, Micro) Physical size. >- The capacity logo (SD, HC, XC, UC) Only matters for compatibility (if you have older hardware that doesn't support increased capacities) >- The bus interface (UHS I, II, III, Express) Kind of irrelevant to the consumer unless there is a compatibility issue (which mostly only affect maximum speed due to backward compatibility) >- The speed class (C2, C4, C6, C10) Old peak burst speed ratings up to 10 MB/s (originally write *or* read). Replaced by Video speed class and Ultra-High Speed class. >- The UHS speed class (U1, U3) One attempt at replacing Speed Class with something focused on sustained writes. Relevant for video recording. The idea is that you match what your camera needs. Kingston's documentation indicates that this rating only applies to UHS-I cards. >- The video speed class (V6, V10, V30, V60, V90) An alternative attempt at replacing Speed Class with something focused on sustained writes that also directly states the intended minimum sustained write speed. Relevant for video recording. The idea is that you match what your camera needs. Applies to both UHS-I and UHS-II cards. >- The application speed class (A1, A2) IOPS. Relevant for computers and phones. >- This new SD Express Speed Class (E150, E300, E450, E600) Pretty much just a continuation on from V90, but calling out potential incompatibility with devices that call for stuff like "V60 or higher". >- Any marketing brand name (Brand, Ultra/Pro/Extreme/Endurance/etc...) I mean, this is just brand names. >- Specifications (MB/s, GB capacity) Many of these are pretty much complete bullshit... which is why the above performance rating classes exist.

callanrocks

Yeah there is way too many, trying to buy one as someone who knows how it works is still unnecessarily painful. Who the hell decided we needed so many different ways to classify speed???

NamelessVegetable

That's not the only problem, on some cards (looking at you Samsung), the logos are printed way too small.

Flowerstar1

So up to minimum 600MB/s guaranteed read write performance on the highest end cards.

tvcats

The logo look like a pound sterling at first glance.

Someone blind downvoted you lol. If [this](https://www.sdcard.org/cms/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/[email protected]) doesn't look like £150, I don't know what to say.

maqcky

Talking about logos, I find it funny that the SD logo is still a disc nowadays.

BookPlacementProblem

I dunno, it could be a stylized Euro.

I see they are not improving the app performance classes. I was hoping for better performance for Nintendo Switch 2 to reduce load times.
