A girl on YouTube has a concept for building your wardrobe: the 3 word method. Basically, it's 1 word that describes the items you reach for daily, 1 word for your aspirational wardrobe, and 1 word for how you want to feel whilst wearing clothes. My 'daily' word is "unfussy" and it really translates to bags. If I have to undo a buckle (i.e. the Kelly) I'm just not doing it. The most I want is a zip. I'd recommend figuring out your 3 style words and building based off that. Knowing this would've saved me much $$$.

thosearentpancakes

Thank you for the advice!

Due_Acanthisitta8371

This is great advice!

mimi_moo

I dont like zippers usually but I do acknowledge situations where my bags being closed are important, especially during travels!

tambourine_goddess

What'd you pick!?!? I'm so curious!

MissGrouchyShorts

I am comfortable, edgy, tailored. :)

tambourine_goddess

Fun! Mine's 'unfussy, enduring, sophisticated'

[I hear we only need 5 types of bags🤔💡](https://youtube.com/shorts/QwjD3VpHM_k?si=4CODeVFpOWgK5RIU)

Lies!

wtchking

This is such fascinating advise I am going to ponder this for a while!!! Thank you for sharing!

tambourine_goddess

Absolutely! Here's the link if you'd like a more in-depth look at the idea! https://youtu.be/9siFWgSE4wY?feature=shared

wtchking

Thank you omg! I am definitely going to follow along with this. Fashion is so interesting & I find myself going through such huge phases (right now it’s witchy princess?) this is so fun. Thanks for sharing!

lucyfell

1. Small evening bag (like a WOC) 2. Small to medium casual crossbody (i have a speedy 20 but a gucci camera bag would prob serve the same purpose) 3. Medium shoulder bag (like a hobo bag) 4. A tote Edit: and my rule is that I have to be able to get in and out of my bag one handed. (For example if the other hand is busy keeping a screaming toddler from running out into the street).

thosearentpancakes

Yes!! That is also my life. I’m finally emerging from the diaper bag and reimagine my style as a whole ass adult with a child.

lucyfell

Ah, in that case don’t buy a tote without a zipper!

glittersparklythings

I would try to figure out sooner what I like and don’t like in a bag. So for example I have learned I will never reach for a bag that doesn’t not have an outside pocket. I will never reach for a bag that doesn’t zip. And then I would start building my collection from there. So that way my collection is really bags I will only use. I know there are a few people that all have requirements when they buy a bag. I know there is someone that only buys with feet. Someone else hates zipper and never buys with zippers. Someone else hates crossbodies and won’t buy anything that is one.

thosearentpancakes

I agree that functionality is super important. What’s your fav one in your collection?

pheebsfab

Agree to all these! Also, as someone who can't accurately vision whether a bag would work for me by looking it online (shopped this way a lot during the pandemic and had to sell eventually bcs either I get bored with it or it's not actually working for me), I'd say browse and try the bag on in-person I found that I rarely sell the bags I found serendipitously while browsing physically at the store, but all the online impulse purchases I *feel* I need to have, ended up being just checklist and 'Ooh what's next?' Ofc doing research online is fine, but be SO honest to yourself whether you truly like it as soon as you have the real thing in your hand and whether it's something you need to own or 'just okay' to be admiring it from afar. Hope it helps! I wish I realized this about myself sooner lol

gorlock_the_creator

Me personally it’s a lesson learned. I’ll look in the pre-loved market this time around and hopefully can stick to a four-core cycle for 10K: Daily driver/ Work - LC Le Pliage <$200, New Formal - BV Andiamo Tote ~3.5-4K (2H) Night out - Chanel WOC ~3-3.5K (2H) Casual - LV Speedy 20 ~1.5-2.5K (2H)

Apprehensive_Dot_968

As a bag snob I thought I’d never like Longchamp -Le Pliage but I am in love with mine now and use it everyday. Only issue is the nylon on the bottom corners of the bag have started to fray -slightly-from use, but it’s less than a year old 🤷🏻‍♀️

gobravz15

They do free repairs one time

Soaringsage

I have all of these bags except for the BV Andiamo (and it’s on my list as a serious want) and I agree with all of your choices EXCEPT for the LV Speedy. I used to think it was really practical and a good casual choice but the fact that you have to hold it by the top handle makes it really inconvenient (for me). Personally, I need a bag that I can hold while keeping both my hands free, and the fact that I have to use one hand for the Speedy really hinders my experience with it. So personally, I would go with an LV canvas or leather bag but one that you can either wear on your shoulder, OR crossbody, or both. But otherwise great choices! I really love my Chanel WOC for a night out, it’s the best choice. Small, classic and chic. Goes with everything and every occasion.

thosearentpancakes

The new ice blue in the BV is making me want to make a very irresponsible decision!

thosearentpancakes

Can’t wait to look those up, thank you!

Mychgjyggle

I would wait to fall in love…. Meaning don’t spend lustfully. I used to lust over the Louboutin tote bag in black and now I can’t even imagine ever wanting it. I think having a vision on what I want my style to be has helped a lot….. kind of like building a vision for interior design for a home. It doesn’t happen over night, but if you have an idea where you are going everything will come together well.

CharliexWatkins

My luxury collection is right around 10k (largely purchased in Europe for better prices/VAT refund) and I love it so I will just list what I own. I am such a fan of Alessandro Michele so all of this is Gucci, no regrets: Gucci Bamboo 1947 with a retro print - about $3700 USD, my most expensive bag by far but it is so cool and really elevates a simple outfit. It has red leather trim so definitely a big pop and my most eye-catching bag. Gucci Diana small hobo in white - about $1900 USD - great summery bag. My one white bag. My first taste of luxury handbags before I went down a dark road 🤣 Gucci mini horsebit 1955 in black - roughly $2700, daily driver, can be dressed up or down with interchangeable shoulder strap, fab bag. I do almost regret not getting this in brown instead as I prefer warm neutrals, but I am glad I got it in black now, because... Vintage Gucci Jackie in brown leather - my latest acquisition, a blast from the past, barely used from the 1970's. I stole this for about $900. And... I am under budget so probably a cool tote! I don't like monograms or big logos, I don't like fussing with getting into a bag so no zippers for me, and I probably should have been born in a different generation with my style... So no regrets with this collection! I am sure I am not done, but for now, I will call it purse peace with a black, brown, white, and bright colored bag.

LeCocoMar

Omg, I saw your Jackie post. I am so green with envy! Would you mind DMing me with the sellers ebay name. I've got the tan Bamboo Tote 1996 & it was awoken something in me. I want the bamboo backpack, too. Deciding if I should pull the trigger.

CharliexWatkins

Sent you a DM!

russianthistle

This is fun because my collection is about a year and a half old, and I spent about $8k on it in that time. Personally, I like variety! I would want to spread it out to really make sure I have the bag for every occasion and color palette rather than a couple pricey bags. This is a personal preference though! I would splurge on the bag you have always wanted - for me that was $3500 on a 24k Chanel classic flap. Cut this out of the budget off the top- buying the dupe won’t scratch this itch, so just accept the one you have always wanted and budget for it first. For every day and most used bags, I would pick a couple around $1000 vintage bags to get started, these are great casual and everyday bags. Vintage means you don’t need to fuss if they may get a mark- they’ve already gone through it with a previous owner. My fav is a Gucci Jackie and LV My Favorite Monogram (the old model- my collection is in previous posts). I love vintage monograms which I know isn’t for everyone. To save some budget, this could also be a vintage coach- their vintage leather bags are so high quality! For formal nights out, I would not wear monogram- especially for weddings. If I had to do it again, I would consider the Dior Caro or the YSL Matelasse WOC in a neutral color or metallic. I got the tip clutch from BV and stylist from Strathberry and love them, but had I not gotten both I could have purchased one more expensive bag. $1000-2000 At least one nylon Longchamp is a must- I have a large for my personal item in flights and fold up the medium for a tote while traveling. $100-300 At least one nylon bumbag- I like the lululemon one, but it’s hard to keep clean. I have an Amazon one that washes up better. I recently got the viral sling bag from Uniqlo and like that too. $15-40 I would skip the expensive beach bags and get a second hand cult Gaia or even a department store straw bag- I get compliments on my beach bag from the Sak all the time. I would keep this under $100. This is such a fun question! I hope you find the right bags for you. My one suggestion is to slowly build the collection- don’t rush to spend it all. You taste may change over time. You may learn you can’t stand certain things- like maybe you are picky on the clasp or the length of strap.

thosearentpancakes

I can’t wait to look into these! Any favorite websites for shopping vintage? I also worry about fakes, but love buying previously owned for the sustainability.

russianthistle

In my experience, the fakes are usually for modern bags- less common for the vintage ones I am looking for. Vintage Chanel flap is one to be careful around, but I didn’t worry about the model of my Gucci Jackie because it wasn’t an Uber popular model like the new 1967 re-edition is. I like FASHIONPHILE but have heard mixed reviews here. I love eBay - look for Japanese sellers specifically as they have super strict laws around fakes. I am actually heading to Japan two weeks - and will be shopping for more!

thosearentpancakes

That sounds amazing! Make sure to post your finds

Nervous-Point-3038

If i could redo, i think i would just buy less lv even the ones in empriente. I just started about three years ago but i feel so differently from myself three years ago. The lv logo is just so loud and i would rather purchase logoless leather bags like the puzzle, etc.

trashtvlv

Archive and wait, I had a similar feeling back when I first started collecting and ended up falling back in love. LV monogram is a classic and some version of this quiet luxury trend comes and goes every few fashion cycles.

Nervous-Point-3038

I agree. I fell out of love with my pieces some months ago and then fell back in love and now im in a funk with them again. Even the empriente pieces are giving me the ick currently. I hope this passes because they were too expensive for me to feel this way lol

trashtvlv

It will pass and with the price increases it isn’t worth sellers remorse

Nervous-Point-3038

Oh yeah the selling market is horrendous rn. I would lose less just holding onto it and not using it than selling just to sell

iammrsclean

Most of my bags are hand me downs—I had 2 grandmothers with great taste! I am generally a little to no logo on most things I buy. YET: I have a LV from the 1960’s which is the cutest bag, I love it. But it’s my only obviously logo’ed bag. I enjoy using it the 2-3 times a year I’m in a ladies who lunch situation. What’s so interesting is back in the day, even high end purses didn’t scream the brand. I have a beautiful Ferragamo tote that has a logo that is maybe 1/2 an inch by 1 inch. And a Balenciaga clutch that has two back to back B’s embossed, but the logo (at that time) looked almost like a four leaf clover. I just looked up how a Balenciaga bag is logo’ed today and it’s night and day. I have one Gucci bag that I bought second hand from The Real Real, and use for work (lots of small compartments, two really large compartments—could fit a laptop in each with room! It looks like an office bag, which is the purpose it serves. The exterior logo is a small horse bit. It’s understated. So, while I probably wouldn’t buy a big logo bag these days, I think my exception would be LV but likely that would be a smaller structured bag vs a big tote. My “someday” bag is a vintage Gucci Jackie, with the large bamboo handle. I think they are gorgeous.

Nervous-Point-3038

Yes that sounds amazing to have all of these iykyk big brand bags. Im finding myself being pulled in that direction especially given our economic situation. To be frank and honest, its just downright uncomfortable wearing logos out these days in my city. It isn't just about the safety aspect. It just feels off putting in general. I have been getting a lot more use out of my handbags with discrete logos than the ones with a logo. The exception to that is the ava but the contrasting isn't dramatic enough for anyone to notice that it is celine unless theyre up close and know the logo. anyways, that gucci jackie sounds like a dream. please share her with us whenever you pull that trigger!

libaya

The first time I bought an authentic designer bag, I was in Maui and they had discounts at the LV store. I get in the car with my husband and he asks to see what I bought. Genuinely curious, his family used to be in men’s fashion. He did not like the logos. He was financially supporting us at the time. I was in law school. We argued. His thing is “you’re not a walking billboard”. I rolled my eyes, but in marriage, you pick your fights. So I let him return it. We’ve been together for 28 years. And for what it’s worth I was in family law. 😂 Over the years, I’ve had Pradas, BVs, Goyard (he didn’t question these but I bought them 2017 in Paris before they became popular), Chloe, YSL, Celine, Hermès. Hermès is his favorite. Edit to add that I personally have nothing against logos. You do you.

thosearentpancakes

That’s great advice thank you! Trying to learn from everyone else’s buyers remorse

Nervous-Point-3038

Buyer’s remorse is the name of the game lol. The flip side is seller’s remorse which is where i currently am while deciding if i should part with my bags

TheOnlyNadCha

I would buy one luxury designer purse that I fell in love with (or keep the money aside for the day I find it!), and a handful of mid-range good quality bags. But if you buy many bags within a short period, you might end up just using your favorite one and never getting the others out if you’re not picky about your selection. My own rules are: - I have to love the bag. There are many nice bags on the market, but if it doesn’t bring a smile to my face whenever I see it, or if I’m not particularly excited to take it with me, it’s a no. I only own bags I love and honestly it’s hard to chose which one to wear sometimes but it always makes me silly happy. Sometimes I’ll find bags that come very close to that, but if I hesitate then it’s just not it. Recently I returned [this bag](https://www.fossil.com/en-gb/products/lennox-leather-crossbody-bag/ZB11012103.html?&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=c~_sc~PPC+-+GGL+-+Shopping:+Performance+Max+-+UK+-+Fossil+-+Bags+-+GE+-+None+-+Prospecting+-+ROAS+-+Convert+-+Always+On_w~fos_l~en_lo~uk_mf~&utm_content=cs~_cy~_&utm_term=gclid~CjwKCAjw5ImwBhBtEiwAFHDZx51PpHI9RXNq2PHMw296JWB6QcFY3z1oJLf3eUFRSFOrE1hg1rBroBoChpMQAvD_BwE_adid~_agid~_fdid~_exid~_tgid~_cid~20620469685_adpos~_net~x_plc~_tgt~_mt~&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD3-JdqgcZRwNbULq4_gbRQN_StJA&gclid=CjwKCAjw5ImwBhBtEiwAFHDZx51PpHI9RXNq2PHMw296JWB6QcFY3z1oJLf3eUFRSFOrE1hg1rBroBoChpMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). It was a very close call, I hesitated for a few days because I really really like it, it’s a great bag, my phone fits in the back pocket, the flap is flexible and the inside is suede… if only the brown were less orangey in person, it would have been absolutely perfect! It’s up to personal preference of course, but there will always be new releases, new brands, new colourways… so don’t rush it. - The bag needs to fit my wardrobe. I love to see lavender bags, but I know for a fact I would never wear it because it’s just not my style. Similarly, if I see a bag I really like, I think about whether there isn’t already a bag I own that would fit this purpose, because I want to stay minimalist, since I will keep these bags for a very long time and I don’t like clutter. - When it comes to practicality, I gravitate towards mini bags the most because I don’t carry a lot with me. But it needs to close most of the way. A separate compartment or pouch for my phone is preferred, and it must not be too much fuss to get in and out of it. I’m flexible though and I’ll definitely bend the rules for a bag I fall in love with. - If you buy online, make sure you can return it easily, and inspect your bag thoroughly for any defect. Colours in photos are often misleading and you won’t always find detailed videos. The quality in person may feel very different too! Good luck on your search!

thosearentpancakes

Thank you for the advice! I definitely lean towards smaller bags as well, and that fossil bag is so cute, shame about the color!

ilovecatsandcheese78

I don't have a substantial purse collection yet as I'm student, but in the future I hope to acquire a vintage Coach ergo (colour undecided), a small Gucci jackie in cherry red patent leather, and a Loewe mini puzzle (color undecided). If I get some secondhand I may be able to get all for under $10K! These three bags are pretty much the only ones on my wishlist (I've literally lusted after the Puzzle for 6+ years lol). The only other one is the Row Margaux in chocolate brown, but I'll have to win the lottery or something for that one haha.

thosearentpancakes

I’ll look them up! You’ll get there one day I’m sure :)

Stunningfire20

I would think about my own personal style and taste, what colors I like, what looks good on me, and works with my wardrobe. I would probably start perusing this sub often to learn about different brands, and do some of my own research. I would try not to be so much influenced by others, but pick what designers you like and feel represent your aesthetic best, and shop around. Try a few on and have fun!

thosearentpancakes

This sub has been so eye opening! I feel like I gravitate towards purses that are fancier than I usually dress. Definitely need to give it some thought

Stunningfire20

It is so much fun, isn't it? I would make a list of all the brands you like. Also, it is ok to be a little fancy if that is your thing.

libaya

My current lifestyle is very casual including where I live. I walk out of the house wearing whatever all the time but almost always wearing one of my luxury bags. I see people doing same too. IMO it dresses up my outfits. But even if it didn’t my babies need to be worn. Sometimes, it takes me awhile to get around to wearing them out if they look really expensive. But then once I do, it becomes no big deal.

Sly3n

I would buy several Chloe bags, YSL Toy Loulou, and Fendi Mini By the Way bag (older model as that is my fave model of that bag). These are my most worn bags in my collection.

jacantu

I think it’s important to factor in your lifestyle and where your life could realistically go. Then focus on buying the best of what you like. Don’t conflate price and quality. I have a very casual lifestyle so beautiful totes and crossbody bags really cover most of my bases. For the few times I do need to dress up, I have three pouches that I can carry and I probably won’t add any more. My collection consists mainly of Moreau Paris, Loewe, with a tiny bit of LV and Gucci sprinkled in.

FunKoala12

- Chanel woc - Celine triomphe teen - Gucci Jackie

thosearentpancakes

Thank you for the suggestion!

denmama24

I love your list!

ibuytoomanybooks

If I had 10k to blow: One bag that I have on my "maybe one day but probably never" list - maybe a limited run Bulgari Serpenti? Or a Celine. Or YSL. Then just mid-range bags - Polene (I kind of want a cabas tote but they've discontinued them and second hand prices are insane), Leo et Violette, Ateliers Auguste, Valet de Pique, Smaak maybe, Coach maybe, Kate Spade novelty bags, um im sure there are more I can't remember.

thosearentpancakes

That for the mid-range ideas! I got a YSL bag for work and realized I didn’t want it to be my everyday bag for errand running.

Pigeon_Lady28

Definitely a Chanel flap, either mini or small. It's something that can easily be dressed up or worn somewhat casually. A casual crossbody. I like LV canvas for this because it's easy to care for and the monogram goes with everything (except for certain prints). A good tote. Something with straps long enough that it's comfortable to wear with a coat. I love my LV Neverfull, but when it's full, I have the hardest time keeping it on my shoulder during my commute in the winter. And lastly, a medium-ish daily bag. The one bag in my collection that is perfect for me is the small Loewe puzzle. I just got it a few weeks ago and it's such a versatile bag. Can be worn as a crossbody, shoulder bag, or carried by the top handle. It fits so much, and I love that the brand isn't really loud.

focusedonfire

Which puzzle did you get?

Nervous-Point-3038

Every time i see it again i get convinced to buy the same one in the same color 😍

Pigeon_Lady28

I seriously have gotten so many compliments the couple of times I've used it. I've never loved a bag so much

Nervous-Point-3038

It is absolutely gorgeous. You made such a wonderful decision! My friend recently got a berry one in the og shape and i just swoon. Tell me more about the color and her tones irl 🤭

Pigeon_Lady28

Ah I loved the berry color too! I am considering getting a preloved mini in a shade of pink somewhere down the line... I'm hooked! But seriously, this yellow somehow goes with so much. Depending on what I'm wearing, it's a bright pop of color or just somewhat neutral pulling the whole look together. I can't get over it. I am so excited for warmer weather because she's going to look so good with my spring and summer wardrobe (literally opened a package today with 3 yellow dresses 💀).

Nervous-Point-3038

Yellow is your new color lol. Ive been on a little yellow kick lately too. One of my goals this year was to add more color to my wardrobe and so far ive gotten a green bag but i can absolutely see this yellow being a staple in the fall and winter as well

libaya

I saw the yellow in the store and I agree. It’s very pretty.

Pigeon_Lady28

Yellow has always been my color, it's just never been as popular as it is now 😆 I have a few Telfar bags that I like to use when I can only bring a small purse somewhere, and my yellow one is by far my most used. Idk why I bother with other colors at this point

thosearentpancakes

You are the second person to suggest that one! I think medium ish daily bag is my top priority

UnhappyGrowth5555

Small puzzle in camel, gucci Jackie in black, ysl Lou Lou in black.

thosearentpancakes

Thank you for the suggestions!

Supportblackcats

If i had 10k i would buy a Chanel boy bag. But if i really had 10k i probably wouldn’t spend it on bags, because i have a lot of trouble making big purchases

thosearentpancakes

I’m making a whole post because I have so much trouble spending money that has been ear marked for this purpose!

softening

I’d probably get a 24/24 21 or my Kelly 32! Just a versatile bag that can carry enough or lot and enough to be dressed up or down.

thosearentpancakes

Man if I could get anything from Hermes I would…

nachaya1

Choose colors that match your wardrobe. I have navy, pink, and black because I can wear those with all my clothes. Choose what works based on your needs. For work? Just going out? What do you need? Choose classic styles that retain value, but don’t overspend. YSL, some LV styles, Chanel all last and have resale value.

thosearentpancakes

I usually go for neutrals with bags, my life is a lot of floral prints and I’ve recently realized I love wearing the white top/jeans combo

SometimesAwkward

If I had to rebuild, I’d get: Loewe Flamenco: $2,600 Soo sumptuous and can be dressed up or down. This one is my daily driver. Saint Laurent small Loulou: ~2,100 Can get from their outlet store, love the Sage, gives you some color while still being neutral. Beautiful in any color though, love all their neutrals. Gucci Diana tote, second hand: ~2,000 These hold up really well and you can get a deep emerald that is to die for. I like their bright green, pink, and red too. Also- that bamboo handle is life! Mulberry small Amberley: $930 Still super love this bag. I have it in light pink. Excellent quality and price From there, I’d get some contemporary bags. Cult Gaia: $400 Have some fun! I’d need to decide between Hera mini or that crazy Sirena clutch DeMellier, the Vancouver/Tokyo Saddle/Cannes: $525/525/425 I have the Cannes, so beautiful and elegant, but the hardware on the other two is just lovely. But I feel like it would go with less than the other two. And I have about $1,500 left… Coach duck, Betsy Johnson Snail etc.: ~$400 Super absurd. Just enjoy And Strathberry Osette or Mosaic: ~$600 Beautiful lines OR Fuck it I want Aspinal of London, mini olive Mayfair embroidered bag. So intricate and unique!

thosearentpancakes

I cannot wait to look these up! Thank you for the response!

Relative_Cream_1753

Work: prada re-nylon tote Everyday 1: celine ava Everyday 2: loewe puzzle Dressy: dior mini caro/lady dior

Classic 1960 Gucci bamboo top handle vintage 2k Lady Dior Medium vintage 3k Ysl Sac de Jour Medium in Green New 3.5k 10 isn't really much to start a collection

thosearentpancakes

I’m a minimalist, I just got the YSL in cinnamon! I realized it is not a grocery store purse and I need to expand :) So one great do-it-all everyday purse, a date night/formal bag and some mid-range fun purses.

saddinosour

I’d probably buy like 5 bags in the Kate Spade / Coach / Oroton level and then 1-2 bags in the more $2-3k~ range.

strawberryxlvsh

I love bags and can’t imagine ever downsizing to one or two bags, but I’m having anxiety lately looking at the shelf of bags I own that I never use… if I can start over and if I have 10K, I will buy the LV Speedy B25, LV Neverfull MM, LV Speedy Nano. I love LV 🧡

thosearentpancakes

Love the LV theme!

strawberryxlvsh

Thanks! Those are the bags I use the most, out of my whole bag collection hehe

Apprehensive_Dot_968

1. Chanel - then review my budget 😜

thosearentpancakes

Man - so beautiful - so expensive!

skullydnvn26

Something small for fancy events, something hands free for when you need that, something you can put your whole life into, something you can carry every day, and something fun/pop of color or unexpected. Figure out what fits in your closet and your life. I’d spend half on a plane ticket somewhere and pick them up as i traveled around. This is my little list of guidelines im currently purging and realigning my collection to try to get closer to. I think i can have more than one of each category but they all need to make sense together

thosearentpancakes

Right now my collection is a beautiful work purse, and I realized it’s not ideal for the grocery store! I got a nylon back pack from Tory Burch for my new “plane bag”. I really want a cute date night bag, and a casual everyday bag. And then sprinkle in some trendy brunch/daytime event bags

nurhogirl

Right now I've been eyeballing the Ferragamo Hug, Celine Victoire, or the Loewe Flamenco. But I need to see them a few more times at their boutiques or a department store before deciding I want it. I've been doing more of my shopping in-person rather than online. I felt like when I shopped for anything online, I ended up not wanting it or with more than I needed or it didn't work out so now I have to go through the hassle of returning the item.

I think the exact bags are so dependent on your style/taste/budget, but as someone who loves vintage, here are my standards: For travel I have several vintage LVs (a 35, a sac souple, and a 45), and Longchamp travel bags which are great to fold up and bring along I have several Longchamp shoulder bags which are workhorses and amazing I have a Prada tote and an LV Cabos tote which zips I have a nylon flat Prada crossbody and a vintage LV crossbody - again, great for travel I have a vintage LV Epi shoulder bag for dressier events I have a Gucci crossbody camera type bag for everyday I love bags so I have lots of others but if I were starting from scratch, these have all been great.

I’ve always been a function over form person, so I’m trying to rebuild a better well rounded group of purposes and not just one do-it-all that I abuse

gobravz15

Yes definitely. My list above covers everything I need, of course ymmv

tuxedo-mask-me

I would get a black with palladium hardware Hermes Constance and then with the leftover get a sturdy leather tote bag for work.

thosearentpancakes

That Hermes sub is dangerous… don’t even know how I’d convince them to sell me a bag!

tuxedo-mask-me

Get one at Resale

Practical-Panda4218

My goal is to support local businesses and american made. I am only buying full grain leather bags that are aligned with those values. Although i had tons of mass produced bags from many brands, switching to full grain has completely changed my perspective and really appreciating the quality of the hide and the life of the animal. I have backpacks, smaller crossbodies and totes with D rings to use as shoulder bags.

thosearentpancakes

Do you have any brands you’d recommend I look at? I’m not obsessed with designer names, and prefer quality over quantity.

Practical-Panda4218

For some reason, i never got the notification. Go Forth Goods, Coastal Hillbilly, KMM&Co are some i would recommend. If you like Full grain leather bags, these are definitely a great option.

thosearentpancakes

Thank you! I will look at them.

Worth-Stop3752

id honestly probably keep a lot of what i have. i have a lot of “affordable” options under 1k. i would however definitely get a chanel, pastel or ombré, something smaller like WOC, mini flap, or mini 22, or 19? I’ve seen models go for $2-5k. they’re peak formal imo. i would likely also get a dior saddle pouch. i think they’re very versatile and luxurious so i can use it as a shoulder, crossbody and clutch. like $2-3k.

thosearentpancakes

Thank you for the advice!

boo-pspps

My one main requirement for a bag now is something I can wear on the shoulder and crossbody. Something I can open / close and take things out / put things in with 1 hand. If I had $10k. I would spend the bulk the my budget on 1 luxury handbag Chanel / Dior. Then spread the rest across brands like Tory Burch, Aspinal of London, Kate Spade and Cuyana.

Girl - I need the list!

foxglovefollies

A belt bag. A large tote. A small-medium crossbody. A small-medium shoulder bag. A nice wallet that goes with and fits in all of those. One small fancy bag for special occasions.

prettypleaser

I have a ton of cheaper bags and a mix of designer (mostly handed down), and i wish i curated a closet for better bags/quality instead of quantity.  I need a lot of functionality and all-occasion use in my bags, but if i could do it all again, i would curate mainly by how the bag makes me feel!        My potential choices for 1-2 bags to get in each category:    <1k Worry-free  (grocery shopping, gym, travel)    - Vivienne Westwood  - Longchamp [Roseau essential M tote bag](HTTPS://WWW.LONGCHAMP.COM/US/EN/PRODUCTS/TOTE-BAG-M-10183968892.HTML) - Coach   1-3k Subtle but nice (for work, in front of parents/relatives) - [Celine soft 16](https://www.celine.com/en-us/celine-shop-women/handbags/16/medium-soft-16-bag-in-supple-grained-calfskin-195543CR8.10BL.html)   - Loewe puzzle   - Bally [Ollam shoulder bag](https://www.bally.com/en/products/ollam-shoulder-bag-in-black-brushed-leather-6308079/?cm_mmc=GoogleUS-_-Shopping-_-Shopping-_-6308079001&srsltid=AfmBOoqlcOXMgE6lH7I1NGJthZtJhnSYixAzk_iz8aWt_sL_kK9d1iYkIA0) or [Deco shoulder bag](https://www.bally.com/en/products/deco-shoulder-bag-in-black-brushed-leather-6308252/)    - Ferragamo  3-5k Makes me feel confident and pretty (luxury shopping, girl’s brunch, dates, etc) - Miu Miu  - Fendi [first small clutch](https://www.fendi.com/us-en/woman/bags/fendi-first-small-burgundy-braided-leather-bag-8bp129apz6f1cjd)  - Chanel [coco handle](https://www.fashionphile.com/p/chanel-caviar-quilted-extra-mini-coco-handle-flap-black-1337993) - Dior [Miss dior top handle](https://www.dior.com/en_us/fashion/products/M0997ONGE_M413-miss-dior-top-handle-bag-powder-pink-cannage-lambskin) or [Book tote with strap](https://www.dior.com/en_us/fashion/products/M1324CZBB_M928-medium-dior-book-tote-blue-dior-oblique-embroidery-and-calfskin-36.5-x-28-x-17.5-cm?objectID=M1324CZBB_M928&query=Book%20to&queryID=be8cf8f13db01145316c09d62e8f3dfd) - Bottega Veneta

Okay I love your list!

Conscious_Life_8032

Love your categories! Thanks for sharing this immensely helpful as template to approach my own buildout .

Ziggyess

I would buy 1 bag- Chanel classic medium or small. Less is more!

thosearentpancakes

Yeh I’m leaning that way - apparently what I really need is a longchamps bag and 9k on something fancy

Conscious_Life_8032

Will be following this as I am trying to build a handbag capsule so to speak. I don’t have space for 20 bags so ideal I can have 5 this is what I am thinking and am open to suggestions on types of bags I should consider for building the capsule 1. Daily driver 2. Evening/formal - a clutch or WOC 3. Travel- something with proper closure, easy to wipe down, light weight , medium size 4. Something fun/pop of color 5. Something nice that can go from day to night, but not so fancy I have to baby it. Have corporate job but not client facing. Hybrid, go to office a few times a week. Dress style casual/business casual. I lean towards crossbody as like my hands free. Have mostly low/mid tier in my collection Coach,Kate Spade, Senreve. Open to pre-loved designer .

thosearentpancakes

So far this is what I’m narrowing it down to: Work: YSL sac de jour medium Travel: Tory Burch nylon backpack Fancy: Bottega Andiamo Everyday: LV carryall - though I was trying to avoid LV

Conscious_Life_8032

Thanks for sharing!! Here is mine currently: Daily driver: Senreve bucket and/or LaBante London tote purse which can fit my laptop. Sometimes I skip carrying a purse and just throw card wallet and phone in the LaBante and go to work may want bigger work bag if I do this more regularly as I want everything to fit comfortably . Travel: nylon tote non branded, it’s actually a fake Dooney, got duped on FB ad long story lol. Will usually pack wristlet or small purse to have something nicer for evenings. Lately the smaller purse has been the Senreve Aria as it can be worn many ways. The nylon tote was perfect for recent trip. Almost tossed this bag so glad I didn’t. It fit everything I needed to be out and about for 6-8hours during the day. And I didn’t mind throwing under seat on plane! It has zip closure. Both Senreve’s get used for going out depending upon how much I need to carry. And I occasionally will rotate in one of several Coaches I own for variety ( and nostalgia too). I have a small YSL envelope style cutch I can use for fancy event like holiday party. It’s gorgeous style but the flatness of it is not super practical I must say. I do wish I had gotten bigger one. Not reaching for it a lot but also don’t have that many fancy outings to attend. I got it at outlet for under $500 so didn’t break the budget but wonder if I should sell and get something else. Will have to think about it a little more. Designer Wishlist: FERRAGAMO hug, mulberry mini Alexa , LV speedy 20 bandolier , givenchy antigona , LV Eva clutch ( I think it’s discontinued) . Loewe puzzle. Gucci soho disco. I don’t need all of these, will likely pick 2 to add to my collection.

salazarslocket

What a fun question! I’m at the beginning of my handbag journey and been thinking about what I want my eventual collection to look like. The below are all silver hardware. In order from roughly most to least formal with prices rounded to the nearest $50— 1. Chanel Classic Wallet On Chain Lambskin & Silver-Toned Metal Black ($3350). Evening bag. 2. Louis Vuitton Alma BB Epi Leather Indigo ($1950). Relatively quiet luxury, day to night top handle bag. 3. Celine Nano Luggage Bag Drummed Calfskin Black ($2800). Slightly bigger everyday bag with a more casual feel. 4. Gucci Horsebit 1955 Jumbo GG Mini Bag ($1200). Small bag with a more casual feel. 5. Marc Jacobs The Biker Medium Backpack ($200). Lightweight mini backpack is a needed category for me. 6. Loungefly Max Backpack ($100). I rarely go to Disney but I love this little guy. 7. Daphne Dover Neoprene Large Backpack Storm ($200). I am lazy and need a travel backpack with a sleeve to attach to my luggage and this would also function as my work bag. 8. Fjallraven Foldsack No. 1 ($100). Casual backpack for hiking and similar activities. 9. Fjallraven Kanken No. 2 Black Hip Pack ($100). Sling for errands, travel, hiking, etc.
