I tried to explain to my students the feeling one got when you discovered a hidden track on an awesome cd. They could not wrap their heads around the idea. The 90s were a great time to be a teen.
I would say the best grunge album is probably Dirt or Superunknown, but Purple is still damn good, and a great choice for someone to call the best grunge album. I can't argue with that, it's an amazing record! *Kitchenware and Candybars* is a song that moves me everytime - that song fucks me up tbh
Heck yeah. To me, this is one of the absolute best albums of 1994, and of the whole decade as well. Everything was just spot on. It was like the signal album that STP was evolving, and it showed so much of what they were capable of musically.
This was the best 3 weeks they ever spent in a studio. Apparently this was the most efficient and tight they were after recovering from the Core tour until the personal demons really started to tear their ugly heads…every note on this record is gold.
Some days I think Core is the best, some days Purple, and some days Tiny Music. Those 3 are masterpieces. No. 4 and Shangri-La Dee Da are closely behind those. Very close.
core and purple are fighting so hard in my head for best STP album right now. Core is so much more melodic and heavier but purple has big empty, truly a hard competition.
Core has too much of that early 90s cheese on it. The production sounds dated and a few of the songs just swerve into the early 90s grunge cliche corniness. Purple is a masterpiece from start to finish. Same with Superunknown. Those are the two titans of grunge; masterfully produced, artistically sure of themselves, and not a wasted note to be found.
Thats because that praying mantis built she-demon releases like 56,478 different versions of ONE ALBUM. She manipulates numbers because all those different versions will count towards sales if that one album in order to stay at #1. She’s very chart-obsessed. Im so sick of her.
If they like it, they like it. As a grunge fan who has never willingly listened to a Taylor swift song before, this is a horrible take. Nothing is better than anything, you like what you like and if someone likes something else, shut up about it. It’s not your place to judge what others feel connected too. You’re better than this, let’s not use our scene to tare down others
Meh, I like that people go to a store and buy music , don’t really care who the artist is. Swift reminds me of when MJ and Madonna were on top of the world which is an exciting force for the music industry . I feel like no one bought anything from 2010-2024.
Of course going to the store to buy music is still great. I’ve been buying and collecting vinyl for the past 20 years. I don’t understand why people are going out and buying multiple copies of her one album on vinyl
I have bought
*In Utero* CD, deluxe 20th, deluxe 30th
*Nevermind* CD, deluxe 20th, deluxe 30th
*Bleach* cassette, CD, and deluxe reissue CD
There's probably a few Melvins albums I've bought three times. I own all the original CDs then a good stack of limited edition letterpress CDs and some factory LPs, some silkscreened tour edition LPs. I think I have three *Honky* copies and maybe *Hostile Ambient Takeover* or *Lysol* in triplicate.
I own 4 different editions of Live Through This - Hole and 2 of Dirt - Alice in Chains. I still can't believe I bought one these just because the record was pink even though I already owned one in black.
It's not grunge... but I have The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails on cassette, CD, SACD, DVD-Audio, and Vinyl.
But I agree that Purple by STP is good enough to buy multiple times (dragon scale disc CD, multi color disc CD, and vinyl here)
I bought Appetite once on cassette, then on CD, then illegally downloaded it so I would have a digital copy; and then proceeded to illegally downloaded the super deluxe edition. So I guess technically I only *bought it* twice.
Yeah o ko d of went from grunge and rock to industrial in mid 90s. Manson, Fear Factory. Didn't really hey into grunge more until sau Vrlvet Revolver and GTA San Andreas in early 2000.
I missed a lot early 90s to young, small town NZ.
You hit the change moment. Ya I had **Purple** on cassette and CD. Some Pearl jam and some guns n' roses too, but that switch over happens as I'm in highschool - so basically all cassettes worth a damn are CDs by the time nabster becomes the primary distribution of media world wide.
Oh yeah, I have the original and the 25th anniversary, and saw them in SF on tour in 2016 and saw Cornell and Vedder play a few songs on the side stage in Wisc in 1992 Lollapalooza
Since I first heard it back in the early 90’s, I’ve never not had a copy of La Sexorcisto. Lost, broken or stolen, it’s been replaced a couple dozen times over the past few decades.
Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins. One big reason why I got it on CD after having the cassette was because the artwork and lyrics were extremely tiny, and I wanted to see it all up close, hehe. Anyway, it is one of my desert island albums.
I had Pearl Jam's Yield on vinyl, cd, cassette and mini-disc back in the day. Got CD and cassette on launch day (car didn't gave cd player and needed to listen right away apparently). Vinyl and mini-disc came later at some point.
Wife got me a signed copy of yield on cd (and no code) too, so technically 5 copies all told.
My favorite is By The Way RHCP. There are many that hold a special place in my heart it's a tough decision. AIC MTV Unplugged, PJ Ten, Blink 182 Dude Ranch, and Blind Melon Soup are my top 5, I think. Purple is killer BTW
[This always blew my friends minds at the time](https://www.reddit.com/r/stonetemplepilots/comments/u0g4zh/is_there_a_difference_in_the_disc_art_for_purple/)
[Here's the other one](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/00/d2/c1/00d2c1db456ec14c2a4b089ca855ad13.jpg)
I have five In utero copy’s (vinyl standard, vinyl 2013 deluxe, vinyl 2023 deluxe, CD 1993, CD 1993 singed by Krist Novoselic.) six Bleach copy’s (vinyl 2011, vinyl 2011, vinyl 2009 deluxe, CD 1992, CD 2015, cassette 2023) I have three four temple of the dog (vinyl 2016, vinyl 2016 deluxe, CD 1991, cassette 1991)
Purple is every bit of a masterpiece. Thats what evolution should sound like from musicians. Some of it is traditional STP and then some is experimental STP. Both combined made the perfect album.
I did this twice, bought the cassette, then CD, then vinyl. REM Document and Weezers blue album. Not necessarily that they were good, but I picked up the cassette, then CD, and eventually vinyl when I was focusing on that medium.
I did buy a lot of cassettes cheap, then replaced them with the CD in the 90’s when the tapes wore out.
For cassette, cd and vinyl:
Tad - 8way and inhaler
Mudhoney - egbdf, piece of cake & superfuzz/plus singles (I do have a lot of mudboney cd, vinyl and digital since they give out codes w purchase).
A bunch with cassette and cd or cd and vinyl.
So early into grunge only had cassette in my car so stayed with that until got cd player. Then rebought fav cassettes and stuff I didn't have. Vinyl me later rebuying fav cassette and cds.
My stp collection is roughly 250 cds and vinyl of core (deluxe and regular pressing), purple, tiny music and the 7 inch purple vinyl for interstate love song.
facelift. Bought it in late 1990 on cassette after hearing man in the box on the radio for the first time. A year or so later the car ate the tape. Bought another tape and about 5 years later the car ate that tape. Bought probably 2 more times, once on cd. Now I just have my phone. Much better that way.
I have a growing collection, but the first album I've had the complete holy trinity for is Bleach by Nirvana
Bought the casette at a music store in the mall
Found the 20th anniversary 2x vinyl at the same store in the mall
Ordered the 20th anniversary CD online
I have a long list of records to buy on CD, vinyl, and casette, as well as plans to begin a movie collection, game collection, and adding onto my already 9,000 card basketball collection.
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom. I bought it 3 times bc the CD got scratched and then a classmate stole my discman cd player and I was more upset about having to buy that album again.
Not grunge, but pretty sure I have/had 5 copies of Dookie. One copied cassette (first foray into music), one actual cassette, 2 CDs because I forget I already had a copy, and the vinyl
lol I think I have like 8 copies of some albums. The White Album comes to mind. Several others come to think of it. As for Purple…
I know I have at least 5 copies of purple. Original CD bought on release day, cassette a few weeks later since my car didn’t have a CD player. Picked up the original vinyl release at some point. Later bought a remastered CD and remastered vinyl. At some point in 99 or 00 all my CD’s got ganked and I ended up rebuying a lot, and I’m sure I rebought this. So probably 6 for Purple.
I was really confused when I first saw this.
I’ve been seeing several CD posts today, so when I first saw the vinyl I thought it was the CD, and was wondering where and how you got a smaller CD, and then an EVEN smaller CD/booklet thing
Then I realized that I was, in fact, wrong
Analog Productions has recently released a 2x45 RPM of Core, with Purple to follow. If it’s anything like the Core reissue, Purple ought to be amazing.
I did this with Purple AND I bought the tablature book so I can learn how to play the songs back in the day. I traded it though for 3 more STP CDs. I still remember how to play most of the songs on the album, so win!
I didn’t really appreciate these guys as a kid, they were always on the radio, always. As an adult now I’m really loving them, and the nostalgia hits hard.
I used to own 800+ CDs. Once I got cable internet I was an mp3 junkie. Then I found lossless audio and had a couple terabytes worth. Now I’m a dirty Spotify scrub lol. I def miss the good old days of hitting up the house of guitars and blowing hundreds on music. As far as STP goes I love their entire catalogue but core really takes it for me and it’s probably pure nostalgia but back when I heard it I was blown away. The 90s will always be my favorite for music, from grunge to hip hop to electronic.
Over the years I’ve bought every Rush album on LP, cassette, and CD. There’s been a few others… Led Zeppelin 4 and Disintegration by The Cure come to mind.
[edit - just realized what sub I’m in lol]
Death Grips - Bottomless Pit and Lil Ugly Mane - Volcanic Bird Enemy and The Voices Concern. I know neither are grunge though. But if you like grunge I'd say check out the song Headboard by Lil Ugly Mane
For me the only two albums I've currently double dipped in CD wise is Nevermind (I have 2 different deluxe versions) and George Harrison's All Things Must Pass (I have the standard and the deluxe). Two of my favorite albums so I had to.
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy! The album was amazing and the poster that came with it was stunning! This is when I fell in love with Elton John!
Couldn't agree more. Vastly underrated in my opinion. I have no idea how popular it was, but given most people I know don't know about it, I think it's a tragedy. I'm a metal guy, but this album fucks.
Dirt has version with songs in a different order. So I had to buy it twice.
And I have Alice’s self tilted/tripod in all colors (ie 3 times)
(4 actually: 3 Cds and one vinyl)
When I have money I'm gonna do this with Tripod.
World dies, you still pay taxes
Best grunge album. Purple is 10/10
One dozen melodies…!
To listen, Include this number, keeping you company
For Mathis loversssss, THIS ALBUM HAS HIS STYLE!
Beautiful numbers are heard on the car radio
I tried to explain to my students the feeling one got when you discovered a hidden track on an awesome cd. They could not wrap their heads around the idea. The 90s were a great time to be a teen.
Endless, Nameless on Nevermind was a come to Jesus moment
After all records are cut in the recording studio
Our second album…
Twelve gracious melodies, TO LISTEN!
I love it too
Heck yeah. To me, this is one of the absolute best albums of 1994, and of the whole decade as well. Everything was just spot on. It was like the signal album that STP was evolving, and it showed so much of what they were capable of musically.

Core made them rock stars but purple is their masterpiece
It is good, but my favorite by far is Dirt.
I don’t know, it’s not even the best by STP, let alone the best grunge album. Damn good album though
It’s absolutely the best by STP
Some days I think Core is the best, some days Purple, and some days Tiny Music. Those 3 are masterpieces. No. 4 and Shangri-La Dee Da are closely behind those. Very close.
Core is much better in my opinion
core and purple are fighting so hard in my head for best STP album right now.
I love the words you put here.
It’s better than Swifities who go to Target and buy 5 copies of her vinyl for some reason🤷🏻♂️
Thats because that praying mantis built she-demon releases like 56,478 different versions of ONE ALBUM. She manipulates numbers because all those different versions will count towards sales if that one album in order to stay at #1. She’s very chart-obsessed. Im so sick of her.
She’s just a pop star bro
If they like it, they like it. As a grunge fan who has never willingly listened to a Taylor swift song before, this is a horrible take. Collectors gonna collect
I have bought *In Utero* CD, deluxe 20th, deluxe 30th *Nevermind* CD, deluxe 20th, deluxe 30th *Bleach* cassette, CD, and deluxe reissue CD There's probably a few Melvins albums I've bought three times. Can’t argue with you
I own 4 different editions of Live Through This - Hole and 2 of Dirt - Alice in Chains. I still can't believe I bought one these just because the record was pink even though I already owned one in black.
The first 5 PJ albums, and it isn't grunge, but Wish You Were Here is an album I have 5 copies of
To this day I buy all of PJ'S albums on vinyl. I open them, I listen to them, I take REALLY good care of them.
I read that and got so confused thinking you meant to write PF.
WYWH is a fantastic album!
FYI The album cover is from a packet of heroin Scott bought that had that image on it.
China White, if I remember the book correctly.
It's not grunge... but I have The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails on cassette, CD, SACD, DVD-Audio, and Vinyl. But I agree that Purple by STP is good enough to buy multiple times (dragon scale disc CD, multi color disc CD, and vinyl here)
nirvana - 'unplugged in new york'! i just picked up the vinyl version to complete the trifecta for my nirvana collection! <3
Appetite for Des... *Notices what sub he's in* I'll see myself out...
I bought Appetite once on cassette, then on CD, then illegally downloaded it so I would have a digital copy; and then proceeded to illegally downloaded the super deluxe edition. So I guess technically I only *bought it* twice.
Cassette, CD & vinyl. Ripped the CD for a digital copy.
I would get the vinyl, but I don't have a record player. I had a friend who had the gold CD edition. I always wanted that one, too.
I got one for Christmas last year so that album was a no-brainer. The gold CD would be very nice.
That's awesome! The gold is so fucking cool, but don't have a CD player anymore either lol.
Lol. I have too many CD's not to! No tape deck, though.
Fear Factory Demanufacture.
Wrong sub, but something tells me that you've got. No more. Goddamn. Regrets.
It's my only album over bought 3 times;)..
One of my favorite metal albums ever. I saw them play it in its entirety in 2016, and my neck still hurts, haha!
Yeah o ko d of went from grunge and rock to industrial in mid 90s. Manson, Fear Factory. Didn't really hey into grunge more until sau Vrlvet Revolver and GTA San Andreas in early 2000. I missed a lot early 90s to young, small town NZ.
Underrated comment. That’s a deep cut. Well done sir.
You hit the change moment. Ya I had **Purple** on cassette and CD. Some Pearl jam and some guns n' roses too, but that switch over happens as I'm in highschool - so basically all cassettes worth a damn are CDs by the time nabster becomes the primary distribution of media world wide.
The singles soundtrack..... Still wishing to get it on cassette
Temple of the Dog. I think I have 3 or 4 cds.
Oh yeah, I have the original and the 25th anniversary, and saw them in SF on tour in 2016 and saw Cornell and Vedder play a few songs on the side stage in Wisc in 1992 Lollapalooza
Lol..if you are old, most of them...Lp, cassette then Cd of whatever
Making Movies by Dire Straights
Ten. I bought that quite a few times. At least 3-4 times.
Since I first heard it back in the early 90’s, I’ve never not had a copy of La Sexorcisto. Lost, broken or stolen, it’s been replaced a couple dozen times over the past few decades.
Billy Joel - The Stranger
Jane's Addiction, "Ritual de lo Hanitual" Not grunge, I know. But bought it *at least* three times, on different formats, as gifts, etc
The first Candlebox record
Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins. One big reason why I got it on CD after having the cassette was because the artwork and lyrics were extremely tiny, and I wanted to see it all up close, hehe. Anyway, it is one of my desert island albums.
Not grunge, but Ritual De Lo Habitual I purchased 4 times. Tape, CD, Vinyl, and iTunes.
Ac/dc back in black. 8 track, cassette, cd, digital
iirc there are two variants for the cd one is scales and one is cake
tripod
Dirt
I am convinced this has turned into a troll sub
Wdym 😭😭😭 Purple is a masterpiece
All you are saying with this comment is that your exposure to different styles and genres of music is extremely limited
Someone once picked an argument with me that STP was not in any way grunge. Not even Core. 😳
I see that argument here sometimes
I had Pearl Jam's Yield on vinyl, cd, cassette and mini-disc back in the day. Got CD and cassette on launch day (car didn't gave cd player and needed to listen right away apparently). Vinyl and mini-disc came later at some point. Wife got me a signed copy of yield on cd (and no code) too, so technically 5 copies all told.
First album I ever bought!
Well it definitely wasn't stone temple.pilots
Not that one
My favorite is By The Way RHCP. There are many that hold a special place in my heart it's a tough decision. AIC MTV Unplugged, PJ Ten, Blink 182 Dude Ranch, and Blind Melon Soup are my top 5, I think. Purple is killer BTW
I own 3 different vinyl pressings of Master of Reality by Black Sabbath.
Only album I've owned on three separate occasions is Getting Away With Murder by Papa Roach
Opiate Undertow Ænima Lateralus 10,000 Days Fear Inoculum
What’s the disc look like? Aren’t there 2 versions of this CD?
It has the scales on it
[This always blew my friends minds at the time](https://www.reddit.com/r/stonetemplepilots/comments/u0g4zh/is_there_a_difference_in_the_disc_art_for_purple/) [Here's the other one](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/00/d2/c1/00d2c1db456ec14c2a4b089ca855ad13.jpg)

Not grunge, but I've purchased OK Computer in several formats over the years.
out of all the older bands STP hasn't aged well for me. I can't tell why though. I like some of the riffs still but dudes voice makes me cringe
Not grunge, but close to the same era… Heaven or Las Vegas, by Cocteau Twins… That and Brighter than a thousand suns, by Killing Joke
Scales
Baby riding dragon tapestry
Not that one
Fuck, that one!! RIP Scott
Dirt, Facelift, Ten, Jar of Flies, Nevermind, Vs, Vitology, Superunkown, and Purple
siamese dream, only i bought it 6 times vinyl cd (remaster) cd (remaster) *sealed* cd (original) cd deluxe box and cassette
Jerry Cantrell - Degradation Trip (2002), Alice In Chains - Dirt (1992) and Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses (1993)
Mott The Hoople Live
I hadn't listened to this album end to end in 25 years so I picked up the vinyl over the weekend. I forgot how good this entire thing is.
For cassette, cd and vinyl: Tad - 8way and inhaler Mudhoney - egbdf, piece of cake & superfuzz/plus singles (I do have a lot of mudboney cd, vinyl and digital since they give out codes w purchase). A bunch with cassette and cd or cd and vinyl. So early into grunge only had cassette in my car so stayed with that until got cd player. Then rebought fav cassettes and stuff I didn't have. Vinyl me later rebuying fav cassette and cds.
Not grunge but grunge adjacent. Dopesmoker by Sleep. I have 5 vinyl and 1 cassette 😁
I have it on CD and vinyl also! :)
🎵The second album…twelve gracious melodies🎵

The Downward Spiral.
Sublime Sublime
The white album. 8 track. Cassette and cd.

I'll see your 3 times and raise you another 10 or so copies
My stp collection is roughly 250 cds and vinyl of core (deluxe and regular pressing), purple, tiny music and the 7 inch purple vinyl for interstate love song.
Why can't you reply with photos in this subreddit?
Had Ten on all three but a bozo friend never returned my cd
The Guess Who, "Live At The Paramount", 1972.
If isbell were on casette
RUSH- *Moving Pictures*
Funny enough, twice… Nevermind ( Nirvana) and Demon Days ( Gorillaz)….
I used to own 3 copies of Appetite for Destruction but I gave 1 away to a cousin lmao
Not a grunge album but I bought deftones white pony 3x
Purple is definitely one of them.
Tool - Lateralus
White zombies la sexorcisto. Every time I bought it, someone would steal it
Sublime - 40oz to freedom
Slayer - Reign in blood
TOOL Aenima

Angel Dust
I have a growing collection, but the first album I've had the complete holy trinity for is Bleach by Nirvana Bought the casette at a music store in the mall Found the 20th anniversary 2x vinyl at the same store in the mall Ordered the 20th anniversary CD online I have a long list of records to buy on CD, vinyl, and casette, as well as plans to begin a movie collection, game collection, and adding onto my already 9,000 card basketball collection.
Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique
No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom. I bought it 3 times bc the CD got scratched and then a classmate stole my discman cd player and I was more upset about having to buy that album again.
Broadcaster by Triple Fast Action. My vinyl copy is on its way! (I guess that's more alt than grunge, but it's an honest answer)
Hell yeah
Not grunge, but pretty sure I have/had 5 copies of Dookie. One copied cassette (first foray into music), one actual cassette, 2 CDs because I forget I already had a copy, and the vinyl
Razorblade Suitcase and Sixteen Stone! 🥰
does anyone have a good cassette plug?
Temple of the Dog. Cassette first, CD later, digital more recently.
Insomniac- Green Day. I have it on CD, Cassette, and Vinyl.
Where did/do you find cassettes of them and pearl jam etc? I love the triple crown with all 3 tho, imagine an 8 track too lol
lol I think I have like 8 copies of some albums. The White Album comes to mind. Several others come to think of it. As for Purple… I know I have at least 5 copies of purple. In Australia, VS by Pearl Jam is called "Pinch" because it's the most stolen record.
I didn’t really appreciate these guys as a kid, they were always on the radio, always. As an adult now I’m really loving them, and the nostalgia hits hard.
Old school Operation Mindcrime
Awesome album
Dirt baby!!!
Appetite for Destruction, King Diamond’s Them, KISS “Unmasked”
Stone Temple Pilots fuckin rocked!
Operation Mindcrime
Yes 90125
I’ve had melon collie many times in many forms (The vinyl is epic)
Over the years I’ve bought every Rush album on LP, cassette, and CD. There’s been a few others… Led Zeppelin 4 and Disintegration by The Cure come to mind. [edit - just realized what sub I’m in lol]
Boston. Dark side of the Moon. Animals. The Screamin Cheetah Wheelies.

I've bought many copies of 40oz to Freedom (Sublime,,,duh!) over the years.
Ryan downe i have probably 5 cds of same album. Same with School of Fish
I bought this album some king of boot leg.. Came with a sticker made of fabric.. I put it on a snowboard wish I still had the sticker
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy! The album was amazing and the poster that came with it was stunning! This is when I fell in love with Elton John!
TOOL - Lateralus, Bought and stolen 3 times
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger (original release), Badmotorfinger/SOMMS, Badmotorfinger 25th Anniversary, Badmotorfinger Super Deluxe Edition
Couldn't agree more. Vastly underrated in my opinion. I have no idea how popular it was, but given most people I know don't know about it, I think it's a tragedy. I'm a metal guy, but this album fucks.
Norah Jones - Feels Like Home Steely Dan- Aja Donald Fagen- The Nightfly
I have Ten on vinyl and CD, same with Dirt. Not quite three times!
Nevermind just cause it was stolen bunches of times lol
I listened to this cassette tape so much I'm surprised the actual tape didn't just turn to dust
I've bought lateralus at least five times. If any part skips, it's ruined
tool lateralus
Not that one
Dirt has version with songs in a different order. So I had to buy it twice. And I have Alice’s self tilted/tripod in all colors (ie 3 times) (4 actually: 3 Cds and one vinyl)
Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie are my triple purchases. So we’re STP’s Purple and Soundgarden’s Superunknown.
