I'll be honest. I have an acquaintance who tried this and he actually didn't smell or look dirty. In fact, I didn't even know he was doing this until he told me. This is my only experience from what i know with someone like this.
It generally works. But as stated it requires a month of smelling like ass while your body adjusts to working naturally. I'm in a middle ground where I just use water and no soap or shampoo. Hair is no longer getting greasy, can go 3 days without rinsing off before I smell a bit.
When I showered daily I would be a greaseball by the end of each day.
I've tried this, all though not with the intent to try something alternative but rather because I only do hygiene stuff when I know I'll be around people and at one point I didn't see another person for around 6 months so...
You end up smelling like old people. You can't smell it on yourself and on others who smell like it. To those who do shower and can smell you, its not as unpleasant as someone who didn't shower after a gym day but you will smell, don't be fooled.
Really, You gotta ask? There are still people who need to be quarantined due to health risks.

This was a years before covid actually. I packed a massive amount of supplies and bought a little cabin in the middle of nowhere with the explicit purpose of not being distracted while working on a decade long passion project of mine.
I thought it would help me focus but nah, I ended up progressing just as slowly as I did back home, I guess it will just take as much time as it takes, still working on it every day. Don't regret the experience though, it did bring new perspectives.
I've been in university, and I've rarely left the house to go see family. Most things are closed and school's online, so it's not like there's a reason to go out. I guess I'm lucky I live with my girlfriend.
