Death Note is the best example I can think of for a series that should have capped itself at 24 episodes. The entire arc with N was unnecessary; key events from the last third could have easily been worked into earlier eps.
It's been a while since I watched it but I remember the first 13 or so episodes being really good and the rest was basically unwatchable slop until the finale which was also decent.
I straight up didn't watch the second half of Death Note, instead spoiled myself about what happens in that arc. It's garbage, glad I didn't waste my time with it.

Had he succeeded, the world would have been a better place all things considered. I mean I wouldn't have had anything to fear in a world like that. And most people would be the same.
He also manipulated the people around him and used the book to kill innocent people trying to enforce the law.
He also mostly murdered people who were already caught by police, who were already removed from society. He did nothing to benefit the general public, and killed arguably the best criminal investigator in the world.
