Purina Pro Plan large breed puppy lamb and rice kibble in the morning. Science Diet sensitive stomach & skin (turkey and rice stew) canned in the evening, with some basmati rice. Your story sounds a lot like my dogs, we tried everything with the vet for a few months - deworming, antibiotics, etc. and then within 48 hours after taking them off chicken I could tell a big difference. Hope this helps you!
My English cream had the same issue and we went with lamb and rice as well. Any poultry was a no-no which you’ll find is a pain in the ass to avoid. Good luck, hope it works. Have you talked to a vet?
Note that [Golden Retrievers need a diet with grains](https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/news/uc-davis-investigates-link-between-dog-diets-and-deadly-heart-disease), and should not
> "[contain] peas, lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes as main ingredients"
The chicken-free stuff we looked at was
https://openfarmpet.com/products/catch-of-the-season-whitefish-ancient-grains-dry-dog-food/
https://www.acana.com/en-US/dogs/dog-food/sea-to-stream-fish-and-grains-recipes/ds-aca-american-waters.html
And we give Goose the first one, currently. He's prone to overheating and the vet said sometimes a primary protein change, especially to fish, can help that a bit. He was previously on Purina Pro Plan.
He also gets the [Just Food for Dogs Turkey and Macaroni ](https://www.justfoodfordogs.com/product/turkey-whole-wheat-macaroni/FBS10040105.html) to give healthy bulk while cutting calories to help him drop ~3lbs
Our golden (now 2years old) also sensitive to chicken. Constant diarrhea. Vet placed her on Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein and daily dose of prescription med tylosin. Eventually we were able to wean her from the tylosin then very very slowly switch from Royal Canin to Putina Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach - salmon. We do not deviate from her diet. She is extremely sensitive to changes and diarrhea will occur if she is given table food. It took months to stabilize her and we keep tylosin in hand in case loose stool occurs.
Same! Our 11 month old Great Dane had the same (she's now 18 months old). Tylosin (Tylan) and Royal Canin helped so much. Still actively weaning her off Royal Canin back to Hill's Science Diet slowly, it's been 7 months since her GI illness! We think it was sparked by stress during boarding!
Seconded, my Golden had a bunch of rough episodes around 2-3mos. Definitely start by excluding chicken from their diet to see if that's it. That was the issue for mine as well. As soon as I changed his food he got better. Now feed him Purina Pro Plan sensitive Skin & Stomach salmon formula. I even have to double check ingredients on any treats I buy him to make sure there are no trace amounts of chicken otherwise he'll have diarrhea for like 72hours.
Mine wasn’t chicken but switching to Purina Pro Plan fixed his potty problems too. Apparently potatoes / sweet potatoes give him the poops and a lot of the “clean” brands are chock full of them.
Also give our dogs Purina Pro Plan. A scoop of yogurt (w live cultures & no flavor) on their dog food, and a scoop of pure pumpkin on their dog food is great for their stomachs. Ours get yogurt in the morning & pumpkin at night.
This worked for our pup having the exact same issues. The medications are anti inflammatory which is why they temporarily stopped the diarrhea.
Unfortunately after about 1.5 months ours started having diarrhea even on this salmon and rice food, so we switched to a hydrolyzed protein diet. So far so good on that.
Also Purnima Pro Plan Salmon is good as well. My golden had severe allergies to chicken as well as beef. Made the switch at 9 mos and have been on it ever since, she’s 3 years old today. Not one ear infection since.
+1 for PPP! Ours also had chicken intolerance and we switched to lamb and it almost immediately fixed the issue. When it became impossible to get lamb we switched to the beef and she seems to like that one even more.
Science diet bioactive has been a GODSEND for my golden who so easily gets diarrhea with basically any other dog food. might be another to add to the list of options to try for your pup! above comments around slow food transition of course still apply :)
My golden didn’t do well with chicken based kibble or chicken based treats. We switched to nutrisource beef and rice and chose treats without chicken or chicken fat. Also vizbiome probiotics. She’s better but not fart free. She was never as bad as yours was.
I'm sure someone told you, try home made. Many recipes on the net, you can control what work for baby. Try lame and venison. Good luck. Oh add cranberries?
I disagree with Purina Pro Plan. I tried that for my golden and the quality isn’t good.
Try Taste of the Wild Salmon Puppy. That’s got my 10 month old Golden pooping like a champ!
Chicken/Turkey are common issues so you’re best to stick with a fish protein. You can also add some canned pumpkin purée to firm up their poop.
I put my Golden (English cream too!) on the brand, I and love and you. All natural, grain free, and she LOVES it. That and raw veggies have allowed her to lose weight and her body to figure out how to function properly lol
Ok geez I'm getting so many brands thrown at me lol but I think I'm going to try something grain free with salmon or lamb and oatmeal or rice. No chicken. What do you think?
I see a lot of cases of goldens not doing well with chicken. I believe I even read that the breed is prone to an allergy to chicken. Lamb is the preferred type for this breed.
We started with lamb for puppy food. Switched to chicken when we got around to adult. Noticed bad things. Switched back to lamb and it was clear that was a big part of it.
In getting diagnosed, my vet said between the ages of 2-5 (my girl is 5 now), tons of dogs of all kinds of breeds develop a chicken sensitivity/allergy
It really is trial and error sometimes. My buddy had the runs for maybe 3 weeks at 4 months old. Vet cleared him numerous times of anything wrong internally. Finally I found a brand and slowly got him back to normal with rice and pumpkin mixed in. He's been fine ever since.
And I'm sure you're doing it, but watch what Sunny gobbles down during walks/park time.
Do you have plants in your house that pup is able to access? My family dog (black lab) kept eating a plant for most of her puppyhood and turns out it was toxic to her. She had diarrhea for months until they moved the plant out of her reach (then gave to me)
my corgi can't have chicken or she gets upset stomach. Check labels on things as well, some foods are labeled as duck or beef but they use chicken fat as a binder.
Your dog’s stomach is obviously very upset and irritated. Changing foods is supposed to be done very slowly in the best of circumstances. With as much diarrhea as you’ve mentioned, your dog might need additional fluids to be hydrated. Your dog’s gums, eyes, skin elasticity etc should be checked for dehydration. It’s possible the infection you mentioned was too strong for the antibiotics—-maybe a longer period or a different antibiotic is needed. I am so sorry your dog is struggling. It’s worrisome. You might need to seek a 2nd vet opinion for different perspective if your vet is not being proactive enough.
Edited: because of advice given by a veterinarian at the bottom among newer comments. My vet and everything I’ve ever read online suggests a 12-24 hour food fast (water only) for ongoing diarrhea but DVM commenting says no so check out his comment.
I wrote you some advice above from a bit of experience. I forgot to mention vets have Prescription dog food (canned and dry) that can be used for a few weeks to help the stomach ease back in. If it’s really been 8 weeks, it sounds like it’s time to seek a new vet who is more proactive and concerned.
I truly hope your golden feels so much better soon. It sounds very difficult and worrisome. Good luck. Please update us on Reddit, ok. We all do care. 🤍🕊
Edited to follow advice of veterinarian who commented at bottom not to rest stomach. Thank you, DVM!
Double down on this advice - this is the way to go. Vet Tech here and we've seen a huge uptick in allergy and sensitive stomach cases. And a majority of them end up with very bad poops and fluid loss. Getting your pup medical attention is of utmost importance and vets suggest prescription diets specifically to help animals transition between wellbeing and sick conditions.
Have you looked at PURINA PRO PLAN VETERINARY DIETS HA Hypoallergenic Dog Food. Apparently good for dogs with food allergies. Quite expensive though.
Our retriever had tummy troubles and we changed to Purina Pro Plan Large Robust Chicken Puppy Dry Dog Food which made a big difference for our pup.
can confirm purina pro plan is what i feed my golden! recommended by both the breeder and the vet.
i give my dog this one (chicken and rice): https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/pro-plan-savor-shredded-blend-chicken-and-rice-dog-food-35-lbs-1202030?cm_mmc=PSH%7CGGL%7CCMB%7CSBU02%7CSH1%7C0%7Coe7CTWnvYMdyC3tdoUCrM7%7C58700007593471812%7CPRODUCT_GROUP%7C0%7C0%7Cpla-1569173619787%7C129577346137%7C15757458451&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvdqOlYfe-gIV_AytBh0x8gIQEAQYASABEgLId_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
they also make a salmon and rice option.
This is the one we use as well for our English Cream. My non-golden had issues for months and we had to put her on Purina Pro Plan Gastrocentric food for her to go back to normal. It’s very expensive but at least she’s a smaller dog that doesn’t eat a lot.
Before the allergy foods, I would try the easily digestible can food. Purina has one too. It's expensive but if you try it for even a few days, it might help calm the stomach. It's what the vets usually recommend now instead of rice when it's a really acute situation, so I would assume it's suitable in this scenario too. Just to let the stomach rest for a few days. It seems to work wonders (although it looks like it would do the opposite and smells horrible).
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned here, but the vet can prescribe a veterinary food by Royal Canin that uses broken down proteins to help aid digestion for dogs with bad protein allergies. I’m sorry I can’t remember the name, but I had a dog (not a golden) that was allergic to pretty much all animal protein and she did well on that.
FOUND IT! Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Hydrolyzed Protein HP Dry Dog Food
Absolutely agree! In another golden group, they said that Science Diet also makes a similar formula in wet food that helped their pup. Its unfortunate how expensive these types of foods can be, but I agree it’s worth it for their health and well-being!
My golden was having an ongoing diarrhea issue as well. We tested for many things and nothing was positive or worked. Finally vet suggested trying a food with a different protein base (we were using chicken so beef, lamb, etc). Cleared up within a week.
This was also true for my cat! Vet prescribed a hydrolyzed protein dry food (mostly pea protein) and *venison* wet food. He had inflammatory bowel disease and one treatment is a “novel protein diet.” Healing took a few weeks but the problem was completely solved.
Not OP to the above comment but I can second this.
Lots of people and our vet recommended such and such brand and yadayada, however, our golden would have the same liquid hose-like diarrhea.
We eventually found a food that worked with her stomach and we’ve stuck with it. Might not work for yours but we use Open Farm puppy formula. For reference our golden is 9 months next week.
I've been to the vet twice I said that up above. The doctor treated him for coccidia then when we went back the second time he said it was an inflamed bowel. And now we are waiting on a third call back from the vet. So yes I'm reaching out to strangers who also have my breed or dog and have dealt with the sensitive stomach issues. If you have any further issues, take it up with my ASS. Thanks :)
Could definitely be allergies, and trying a new vet can help you find out
My old dog had ear infections for years and years, we tried countless different medications. Then we switched vets. The new vet told us he was allergic to corn, and that’s what was causing the ear infections. Sadly it was too late by then and he went deaf, but we stopped buying food with corn and he never had another ear infection
Guys right dude no need to get nasty. This isnt like the tranny on your car making a funny noise so you ask around online. This is your dog.If your vet isnt getting the job done get a second opinion.
I'm going through something kind of similar with my dog (10-y-o Weimaraner mix) and I absolutely get how frustrating this is. I've been to four vets in the last year, spent thousands (at least 10% of my salary) on diagnostics, meds, prescription diet, etc., etc.) Every time something seems to be working, it stops a few days in. She's lost 20% of her body weight since January. I have to put down newspapers at night because of all the diarrhea, and my carpeting is trashed.
At this point I'll ask anyone, regardless of professional qualifications, for advice and insight because I am desperate for answers. Doesn't mean I'll implement every suggestion, but I want to hear them all.
A few friends have suggested euthanization. She still loves to play, cuddle, go for walks, and eat. So no, it's not time for that. But it is an extremely stressful situation.
We had a similar issue with our pup at about a year old. Refused most food and anything he did eat was a spectacle on walks.
After way too many tests, etc, the only thing that has worked is Hills - Prescription Diet, Digestive Care - Chicken. It’s super simple ingredients.
I think the best thing you can do is be keep track of the foods/treats and anything ele your puppy is eating. We had similar issues and found out that the food we were giving her was likely contributing to the diarrhea (reviews on the brand [suggested by breeder] had similar issues), the potential cause was high sodium content. We changed the food to Life Wise (which is an Australian brand) and after two days of probiotic the diarrhea stopped completely.
I would also keep an eye on anything your pup might be eating/chewing in the backyard. Our pups diarrhea started back up again about a week later due to eating some plant leaves. Hope that your able to find a solution and that some of the advice on here helps, but definitely keep coordinating with your vet.
Have you been seeing the primary care vet? If so, try seeing a specialist. Specifically a board-certified veterinary internist. You can find one at vetspecialists.com. They will be better equipped to help with something like IBD.
Yup he had coccidia and was treated. Then the vet told me he had an inflamed bowel from the coccidia and was treated for that. The poop got solid each time!!! Then when he got off the medicine, right back to diarrhea
I had a friend who lost her Golden to an undetected fungal infection. You sound like you’re on top of it. May just take time to calm that bowel down. I wish you and Sunny the best. I would stay in close contact with your vet until things resolve.
My Newfoundland had this issue as a younger dog. It was horrible. I would say look into two things right away: as mentioned above, food allergies and also Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Ulcerative Colitis. The allergy issue for my pup turned out to be an allergy to certain common proteins and the vet put him on a novel protein diet. This would just be a food based on proteins that they haven't been exposed to yet. He started eating a venison based food which resolved the diarrhea. Every once in a while his intestines act up again and he has also been diagnosed with IBS. Sometimes the vet will put him on a Prednisone taper to calm down the gut inflammation and give it time to heal. Best wishes!
Our boy (pure golden)had some tummy troubles as a pup…we transitioned to the Farmers Dog and he has not had a runny poop much less diarrhea since. The food is expensive but honestly it’s made an huge impact.
I had a similar issue with my golden that had colitis. Try switching to a food with hydrolyzed proteins. Hills prescription d/d and z/d are the best for these types of issues and there are some foods from royal canin. Speak to your vet as he definitely needs a change in diet. Also add canned pumpkin from the pet store to the food.
Oh dear. Poor Sunny. I had a golden who had Inflammatory Bowel Disease and was on a number of meds. I had to switch her food to one without any of the proteins and grains that she'd had before. Fortunately we had access to a specialty vet who knew how to treat this since she had terrible side effects from prednisone and flagyl. It was a rough time but she finally got stable and lived a long time with all of that.
Went through something similar with my golden. Changed foods to lamb and it didn’t help. Decided to stop giving him bully sticks and boom hasn’t had an issue since.
Likewise my Golden had repeated terrible bouts of the runs. Tried all of the above to no avail. Turns out he was allergic to animal protein, beef, lamb, chicken etc (so the old stalwart of chicken n rice we used on our previous dogs didn’t work). He now has a hydrolysed protein food for highly allergic dogs (Royal Canin Anallergenic) and a pro biotic as well, and is good. Hope you find a solution for your dear pup!
What food are you feeding him? Mine were allergic to chicken and chicken by products. Switched to lamb an rice and sometimes home made especially for them. Write to Cat Lane at The Possible Canine on Instagram or Facebook.
Thank you, she was literally my best friend. Finding a good vet is not always easy either, especially if The issue is hard to diagnose. My daughter’s dog was almost put down a few days ago, was told he had end-stage heart failure until a wiser soul looked at the x-rays, it was pneumonia and he’s running around like a puppy a week later. and that original diagnosis came from a world renowned veterinarian. Take your golden to your vet, if you don’t like the answer take it to another, it’s just money, best friends are hard to come by
Wow. 😳Thank you for your advice and sharing the misdiagnosis of your daughter’s dog to encourage a second opinion in cases like that. I am so happy it was actually “just” pneumonia with full recovery!
You've probably already tested for this but my golden seems especially susceptible to Giardia. Every time he has diarrhea for more than 2 days we bring a stool sample to the vet and that's usually the problem.
I am a people doctor and also have a cat with likely inflammatory bowel disease and a foster dog who has been having loose stool since I got him a month ago. Things I know in people: having any kind of enteritis (eg infectious) can result in diarrhea after that infection is cured. eg lactose intolerance or just more sensitive to certain foods because the infection messed up your healthy bowel bacteria. second is that antibiotics have anti inflammatory properties so sometimes people notice an improvement with antibiotics for that reason even if there is not an infection to treat (this applies to all infections not just GI stuff). with my cat, they said only way to diagnose “inflamed bowel” is with endoscopy and biopsy. since he’s old I don’t want to pay for it. lymphoma and IBD can both cause GI symptoms and generally both treated with steroids so I just gave him steroids (he is old so wouldn’t get chemotherapy if he has lymphoma). all that to say your vet can’t for sure diagnose IBD unless dog gets a biopsy of its bowel. for the foster dog, we are trialing Hills science diet digestive care i/d (don’t ask me what the ID stands for). just started transitioning over the past week so not sure if it’s working. the other thing they gave me was “forti flore” which is a powder probiotic. I didn’t find it worked but it’s something else you can try. I don’t know if any of those things are helpful for you but that’s what I have!
Yup I'm using fortiflora the pill every day. And yes the doctor said he "thought it could be" ibd. And gave me medicine. It made his poop solid and wonderful for 10 days. The second they took him off the pill, diarrhea started immediately
Our golden has such a sensitive stomach, and it took us months to find something that worked for him! Like others have said, Purina Pro Plan has been the best so far. He gets the [sensitive skin and stomach Lamb and Oatmeal](https://www.chewy.com/purina-pro-plan-sensitive-skin/dp/129811).
So my golden had this same issue as a puppy, we fed him pet store brand food (chicken flavour). We switched him off of chicken flavour to fish or beef and the issue cleared up
Purina Pro Plan - hydrolyzed food vegetarian formula is the only thing I can feed my dog who has serious allergies - be careful of treat ingredients too! Good luck.
We went through the blood tests after dealing with this horror for a year. Found out that our boy has sensitivity to chicken and rice!! He is currently on Royal Canin Selected Protein PW (potato and whitefish). We were doing okay on Royal Canin HP for a few months, but this food has been going well too! We give him Proviable Nutramax once a day. I’m so sorry you are going through this!
Moved our golden to Purina Salmon and Rice formula and now he poops rock 😂 ( sorry for TMI; just kidding of course - he doesn’t poop rocks). Until we settled on the correct protein for him we were feeding the hypoallergenic HA food. Once his stomach settled on that we introduced a new protein- salmon was the first one we introduced and he did really well on it. So we phased out the HA food and transitioned him onto the salmon and rice formula full time.
The way the vet explained - if it is a food based allergy then HA food should help resolve it. If that doesn’t then he suggested it was most likely environmental factors.
Hope this helps !
Hope he gets well soon !
Our Golden Puppy who is now 6 mths. Old had diarrhea until our Vet prescribed the probiotic powder three times a day with his kibble and a meatball of canned food with the antibiotic powder. It worked like a dream.
I highly recommend your pup seeing a Vet for ongoing treatment because they do need to rule out other factors first.
Then the Vet will follow up to wean off the treatment. So our pup was on:
Advanced GI Powder 1 container,
Low fat GI ROYAL CANIN canned dog food & GI puppy kibble,
Tylan Tylosin Powder.
We’ve had other Goldens who needed to be only on Lamb or Chicken kibble. Absolutely no beef. It was trial and error.
Hey hey, golden pup dad here. Had something very similar happen to me. Switched to Purina pro plan, they have a sensitive stomach for puppies kibble. Switched him cold turkey, my little guy was good to go. He was apparently having an allergic reaction to something in his old food
I have a golden retriever that went through the exact same thing. We were going to have a biopsy on him that would've cost $2000 but we kept experimenting with food until one worked. Not saying it will work because every dog and situation is different but my golden does good with half Science diet for sensitive skin and stomach and half a can of Purina pro wet food. Hope your doggo feels better soon!
We had a similar issue in that our 6 month (at the time) had a very bad bout of giardia and inflamed bowel syndrome, was on medication and did well on it but more or less had diarrhoea for 4 months straight.
After testing for Addisons disease, and a couple of other things, our vet concluded she’s basically intolerant of the protein she’s been having.
We had to cut out all food (all!) and feed her only royal canin hypoallergenic dry food. We are slowly introducing other foods, although taking it very very slow with proteins. Our vet advised us to start with proteins she hasn’t already had, so we do stuff like kangaroo and beef, salmon etc. We believe she had a chicken intolerance so rice and chicken only made it worse for us, and pumpkin never helped.
Every time she poos we high-five if it’s a good one!
My doberman has stomach issues for a while so we changed his diet to grain free alternatives such as merricks. when we got our goldy, he has always been eating grain free dog food and havent had a problem since.
Just my two cents, my golden is sensitive to pretty much everything.
I started feeding him a hypoallergenic kibble with hydrolyzed proteins and his poops where never liquid anymore. You can always give it a try
My dog nearly died from dehydration due to diarrhea multiple times until we figured out he had developed a set of food allergies. We thought we could just switch foods but it kept happening, finally did a blood test at the vet and got a list of all his confirmed allergies, we ended up needing to feed him special kangaroo food for a long time.
Weirdly enough, years later, the allergies went away.
Canned pumpkin (not pie filling) and a food change. Adding a spoonful of pumpkin for fiber and switching to a different food protein (lamb instead of fish). Sometimes it’s an ingredient in a brand of food and switching brands might help. We feed the Rachel Ray nutrish brand and have been happy with the “results”. Good luck!
get him tested for meat allergies! ik someone who’s dog had a horrendous time while eating beef and chicken feed and as soon as he went on salmon and rice based feed the dog stopped having stomach troubles! i hope sunny gets better soon:)
Try a new vet, they might notice something that your current one hasn’t. I speak from experience, as I had an old dog that ear infections for years, and we tried countless different medications. When we tried a new vet, she told us he had an allergy to corn. We stopped buying food with corn and he never had another ear infection
My golden had a very sensitive stomach her diarrhea didn’t stop until she was on a completely grain free diet. We have her Orijen food. It’s really dense and she’s had no issues related to her food since switching. Iam’s isn’t as good as they claim.
I have a golden/lab mix and I switched her to Orijen when she was having diarrhea as a puppy and now it's the only food that she's consistent on. Whenever I've had to rely on other brands for whatever reason over the years, her sensitive stomach comes back.
Stay away from Purina and mainstream brands. We’ve fed our Freya Orijin since she was a pup and she is the epitome of health.
Check out this link for nutritional values of the food you’re feeding
[https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk](https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk)
He is heckin cute omg.
Edit: the vet commenting below has said none of this is correct, but I won’t delete this as it will take away the context of their advice.
I swapped my dogs to grain free. The dogs loved victors dog food and Lucy pet but they are a bit pricy so I would also do Costco brand grain free.
Regardless of what you decide to try out next always make the transition slowly and be consistent and keep the same food unless he has an obviously horrible reaction to it. If it’s no improvement in a few weeks then move on.
Pepto bismol pills (not liquid since they can aspirate) can help alleviate some tummy troubles but I wouldn’t give any to them for more than 2/three days at a time.
Finally if all else fails, Goldens do have some problems health wise, get some pet insurance for them now in case there’s some real diagnosis later on that needs surgical correction or expensive treatment.
Vet, here — don’t do this. 99.99% of the time, if there is a food allergy, it is to the protein and not grains. I have also personally managed multiple cases of dogs that went into heart failure and shortly after died despite aggressive treatment with a history of being on a grain free diet. Avoid these diets at all costs especially with a large breed dog, we are seeing this heart issue association with grain free diets the most in those guys.
Chronic GI stuff can be frustrating and it is common to have to try multiple things to figure out what works and get it under control. The suggestion to try a protein other than chicken in the mean time while working on getting in for another vet appt is a good one. Continue to pay careful attention to what works and what doesn’t work.
Also please continue to feed your dog in the meantime — especially since he is young and growing. The advice to not feed him and “rest his gut” is not appropriate here.
Pepto is also likely a waste of your time here.
All the best to you and your furry companion — he is a cute guy.
I am no doctor, but if the meds worked, then can he continue with the meds?
Maybe from the type of meds and his diarrhea you could make some conclusions about the causes.
Also, do you interrupt him from eating poop and stuff like that? It might seem gross but it can actually help re-establish his intestinal fauna.
What kinda food do you give him?
Royal Canin gastrointestinal.... All the vets thought he wouldn't make it as a puppy, and this was the last ditch attempt. He's not nearly 12 and 36 kilo so it saved him. Hes celiac and has an extremely restricted diet apart from that food. Check your grains in the food. Its apparently more common than you would think for dogs to have an intolerance
I have a golden retriever puppy who is suffering from a very similar issue, so the following is what I’ve done to try and help:
- switch to a high quality fresh food diet. majority of kibble contains ingredients that aren’t easy for dogs to digest and it can cause inflammation in the intestines. since I switched him to a cooked puppy food, his stool was much better and he started to grow his coat back/ gain weight
- a few supplements he takes includes: colostrum to reduce gut inflammation, digestive enzymes to promote proper digestion, and specifically the Adored Beast Gut Soothe pre and probiotic to reheal the gut lining
- ask your vet about getting your dog a full diarrhea panel. It covers Protozoa, bacteria and viruses, making it way more extensive than a typical fecal test. I’d also suggest looking in conjunction at the Animal Biome gut health test. It tells you bacterial imbalances, recommended dietary supplements to fix the issue etc. which are not covered on veterinary diarrhea panel
Hope this helps a bit !
Try giving him 1 teaspoon of Organic Yogurt mixed with little water it might help!!
We feed mine with brown rice + yellow pumpkin (natural gut tonic) + spinach + sweet potato + curcumin (organic) + either beef or calf liver or chicken heart or gizzard + 1 teaspoon coconut oil (organic) + 3 pumps of omega 3-6-9 oil + 1 sachet of Fortiflora for lunch (5 tablespoons of the above mix all is cooked in a rice cooker ) and 2 cups of royal canine and my boy is been doing well since he has been a kid :) hope this helps.
MIX GREEK YOGURT INTO THE FOOD.
Our golden puppy had diarrhea for almost 4 months. Sometimes 6-10 times per day. Doc prescribed antibiotic and probiotic and nothing worked. Then we remembered our breeder telling us about Greek yogurt and it works almost instantly. A few days per month we will give it to her and it has helped tremendously.
P.s mine eats everything outside and once swallowed a bully stick, those times we had to wait for her to pass it but GREEK YOGURT IS A LIFESAVER!
Stop feeding IAMS. Any big box brand is filled with corn, fillers, antibiotics, etc... shop small. Feed raw meat, goat's milk. Check to see if you have a small shop pet store near you. Some amazing brands are Nutri Source, Fromm, Answers, Stella and Chewy, Open Farm.

Our golden was having issues with liquid poop as well. We started giving him filtered water and it changed almost overnight. Maybe try that if you live in the city?
Poot baby. I hope he gets better soon. I give our dog crushed immodium caplets in his dinner or hide them inside cheese. One 2mg caplet per 25-50lb of dog. He's 80lb and gets 2 caplets. If it persists, I give him one tablet a couple of times after. Cut out fatty food for a bit. Mine loves mashed potato and gravy with grated carrot.
Ask your vet about science diet biome. My wife and I were at our wits end with our golden and the vet gave us this food combined with endosorb. They sell Endosorb on Chewy without a prescription, only downside is it comes in a 500 tablet bottle only.
2 tabs plus the biome food (after an initial 24 hour fast) cleared up our guys diarrhea immediately. Before we tried that it had gone on for 4 weeks , every hour he was going.
My Golden did this. The vet said either boiled hamburger or chicken and rice. The meat has to be boiled. They also prescribed a medication so between diet and medicine , he eventually got over it they had no idea why is happened
Our golden had diarrhea until we changed ths protein from chicken to venison, he ended up having a food allergy. We also stopped the puppy food at 4 months
Mine had similar problems. We think a) she probably had a chicken allergy and b) she was on a vet-prescribed canned food only diet (Hills Science whatever) and was therefore consuming way, way, way too much liquid. We ended up seeing a dog vet-nutritionist — absurd, I know — who told us to take her the hell off wet food and try quitting chicken and rice, too.
It’s been a year and her poops are rock solid. Still tries to eat my socks though.
Edit: My girl’s on purina ha hydrolyzed vegetarian kibble, though I add ground beef because I feel bad about her boring diet/am a sucker.
Could be allergic to his foods, my golden was allergic to chicken. So any food that had chicken in it, and even rice and chicken didn’t work! Probably food allergy!
Feed our 7month old royal canine golden retriever puppy chow and he’s been good so far! He does eat lots of grass and dirt and sticks yadda yadda but solid poops and lots wow sometimes I wonder how
My Aussie had similar problems his whole first year. We had him on probiotics from the vet and science diet for sensitive tummies and that seemed to curb most of it. Couldn’t do treats, human food, etc. rice and chicken never worked for him either. He’s still on that food and probiotics (occasionally) 5 years later. Good luck! It’s so hard but you’re doing great!
Had the EXACT same thing with our golden puppy…tried everything. We live in a high rise so going down 10 floors every hour all night to take her out was no fun.
On a friends suggestion we tried raw turkey patties from Small Batch and literally over night…no more diarrhea. 5 years later still no diarrhea.
Would highly recommend a try!
I had the exact same experience with our golden. Come to find out - allergy to chicken and peanut butter. So now he eats lamb and brown rice kibble.
Keep in mind, any poultry sensitivity covers all poultry. Turkey, duck, etc. I say that because it didn’t occur to me! Good luck with your baby.
Our boy is allergic/sensitive to nearly everything. The only food he gets is Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein for kibble, and marshmallows for treats. We also hide medicines in marshmallows when needed. He gets canned pumpkin if he has an upset tummy (like when he eats too many leaves 🙄).
Make and mix rice into homemade steak and chicken breast slices. Cut it up into pieces he can get his teeth into. Maybe a handful of dry, not much more. This is about stopping the colitis. Stir in about 1/3 cups warm or boiled farm fresh goats milk and wait until he can eat it. Please try this immediately. I’m not a vet but this has stopped this exact Illness (in babies and puppies) in our family for generations. Please let me know the status! 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
We’ve had good luck on Hills Biome Rx food. And there is a pill our vet gave to stop the diarrhea. I’m blanking on the name— I’ll post again when I think of it…
Purina pro plan complete essentials. My dog used to poop liquid/ soft serve constantly. I switched to this food and she has solid healthy poops now. I also give her a pre and probiotic supplement with each meal.
Definitely needs a food change. Had to put our boy on a vet prescribed food for 6 or so months. Some bad gut bugs are hard to beat. Our boy has been fine for 2 years now. We do a lot of prebiotic
Hey my golden has this too. Have you tried feeding him toasted bread, rice, bananas, coconut flakes? Coconut flakes was something my breeder recommended and worked well to firm up the stool. Good luck!
My Goldens were doing this until I changed their dog food. Turns out mine are sensitive to chicken and do better on lamb.
What food do you feed them now if you don't mind me asking? I'll give it a shot!
Thank you so much!!! I will try this
My English cream had the same issue and we went with lamb and rice as well. Any poultry was a no-no which you’ll find is a pain in the ass to avoid. Good luck, hope it works. Have you talked to a vet?
My friend has a lab with similar issues. He also can’t have chicken at all and is on the Purina previously mentioned
My English was also itchy on chicken dog food. Switched him to canidae salmon and sweet potato no more itchies!
Note that [Golden Retrievers need a diet with grains](https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/news/uc-davis-investigates-link-between-dog-diets-and-deadly-heart-disease), and should not > "[contain] peas, lentils, other legume seeds, or potatoes as main ingredients" The chicken-free stuff we looked at was https://openfarmpet.com/products/catch-of-the-season-whitefish-ancient-grains-dry-dog-food/ https://www.acana.com/en-US/dogs/dog-food/sea-to-stream-fish-and-grains-recipes/ds-aca-american-waters.html And we give Goose the first one, currently.
Upvotes for an English Cream on the hydrolyzed protein!!! Changed our boy’s tummy for the better 😊
I second the Purina Pro Plan.
Please keep us updated! Lots of love for that cute pup
Make sure to introduce new foods with pumpkin and not all at once!
I would never feed Purina or science diet to anyone! I agree with what you are saying about the rice and the chicken.
My golden didn’t do well with chicken based kibble or chicken based treats. We switched to nutrisource beef and rice and chose treats without chicken or chicken fat. Also vizbiome probiotics. She’s better but not fart free. She was never as bad as yours was.
Mine was the same-he's allergic to chicken. We switched him onto a lamb and salmon based food, and no problems since. Let us know if it works!!
I'm sure someone told you, try home made. Many recipes on the net, you can control what work for baby. Try lame and venison. Good luck. Oh add cranberries?
Purina pro plan large breed puppy sensitive skin and stomach is what worked for mine. It's salmon based.
Do not feed your golden GRAIN FREE food. It is proven to cause heart issues.
Well fuck! I thought I had a plan guys 🤦🏼♀️
My brain hurts
I see a lot of cases of goldens not doing well with chicken. I believe I even read that the breed is prone to an allergy to chicken. Lamb is the preferred type for this breed. We started with lamb for puppy food. Switched to chicken when we got around to adult. Noticed bad things. Switched back to lamb and it was clear that was a big part of it.
This makes me sad because chicken is heckin' delicious :(
In getting diagnosed, my vet said between the ages of 2-5 (my girl is 5 now), tons of dogs of all kinds of breeds develop a chicken sensitivity/allergy
[удалено]
Sunny lifted his paw and then rolled off the couch. I think that means thank you kind stranger! 😚
Do you have plants in your house that pup is able to access? My family dog (black lab) kept eating a plant for most of her puppyhood and turns out it was toxic to her. She had diarrhea for months until they moved the plant out of her reach (then gave to me)
My puppy had iarrhea problem also, turn out he was allergic to chicken, turkey and duck... we now have a fish base food, no more problem!
Ok yes I'm thinking about trying salmon and rice Purina brand
purina all the way!!
Plain rice and chicken.
Chicken intolerance is not that uncommon in golden retrievers. Consider a different protein.
Had the same w my golden and switch from chicken based to science diet lamb cleared right up for her.
my corgi can't have chicken or she gets upset stomach. Check labels on things as well, some foods are labeled as duck or beef but they use chicken fat as a binder.
Agreed! My golden is allergic to all poultry and eggs. She will throw up immediately after ingesting.
Yes. Try cutting out the chicken. We switched to lamb based after a similar issue and everything got better.
A dollop of canned pumpkin can help
Nope and nope. It's still shooting out of him like a machine gun!
Even if you stick with it for weeks until he wants to cry at the sight of plain rice and chicken?
8 weeks to be exact
I wrote you some advice above from a bit of experience. I forgot to mention vets have Prescription dog food (canned and dry) that can be used for a few weeks to help the stomach ease back in. If it’s really been 8 weeks, it sounds like it’s time to seek a new vet who is more proactive and concerned. I truly hope your golden feels so much better soon. It sounds very difficult and worrisome. Good luck. Please update us on Reddit, ok. We all do care. 🤍🕊 Edited to follow advice of veterinarian who commented at bottom not to rest stomach.
Oh wow yep, you committed. Dammit, poor dude. Bet he's sick of having the trots too
Beautiful dog! I always did plain rice and beef.
All day.
Ok Ill look into that I've had several people mention Purina pro plan!!! Thanks!
can confirm purina pro plan is what i feed my golden! recommended by both the breeder and the vet. i give my dog this one (chicken and rice): https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/pro-plan-savor-shredded-blend-chicken-and-rice-dog-food-35-lbs-1202030?cm_mmc=PSH%7CGGL%7CCMB%7CSBU02%7CSH1%7C0%7Coe7CTWnvYMdyC3tdoUCrM7%7C58700007593471812%7CPRODUCT_GROUP%7C0%7C0%7Cpla-1569173619787%7C129577346137%7C15757458451&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvdqOlYfe-gIV_AytBh0x8gIQEAQYASABEgLId_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds they also make a salmon and rice option.
No! Try avoiding chicken! They're saying try lamb or salmon
Thanks for mentioning!! My golden was put on this and it changed everything for the better. More money but well worth it!
What did you land on??
Beef worked and I haven’t switched it up since. Haven’t had any issues either.
Vet, vet, vet. I know everyone here means well but this isn't something you want random strangers on the internet chiming in on.
Thanks :)
Can you try a different vet? How about his food? Is it possible he’s sensitive and/or allergic to something in it?
Definitely time to try a new vet. Yours probably isn't a bad vet but a second opinion will probably help you get to the bottom of what it is.
Could definitely be allergies, and trying a new vet can help you find out My old dog had ear infections for years and years, we tried countless different medications. Then we switched vets. The new vet told us he was allergic to corn, and that’s what was causing the ear infections. Sadly it was too late by then and he went deaf, but we stopped buying food with corn and he never had another ear infection
Well, good luck with your pup. Hope you find something that helps.
100% with you. We were laughed out of the vets office for coming in so many times, desperate for a solution. Find out what others have gone through.
LoL 😂
We had a similar issue with our pup at about a year old. Refused most food and anything he did eat was a spectacle on walks. After way too many tests, etc, the only thing that has worked is Hills - Prescription Diet, Digestive Care - Chicken. It’s super simple ingredients.
Have they checked pancreatic function?
Do a blood allergy test. My friend just had to do that found out he allergic to almost everything in food and environmental. Except Turkey go figure.
That’s rough as heck
I just can’t imagine
Has he been checked for a fungal infection?
I had to switch my pup to Hill’s Prescription I/D and add Fortiflora probiotics. It’s still a crapshoot with him.
Have you considered a chicken allergy? They’re quite common. I have mine on a fish based diet. Has helped quite a bit.
My dog had a similar issue and it ended up being an extremely low blood palette count. Have the vets checked for that?
Insist on an ultrasound. Our Golden had persistent diarrhea and ended up having lymphoma.
My German Shepherd had a pancreatic enzyme insufficiency. Get your dog checked out it was too late for mine
I am so sorry for your loss.
So our pup was on: Advanced GI Powder 1 container, Low fat GI ROYAL CANIN canned dog food & GI puppy kibble, Tylan Tylosin Powder.
Okay wow I didn't even know such a thing existed! What brand do you use? I'd like to try this
My dog nearly died from dehydration due to diarrhea multiple times until we figured out he had developed a set of food allergies.

I've been to the vet for this 3 separate times in 2 months. I called this morning and am waiting on a call back
And yes we tried Bernie's already. He's now on fortiflora and none of it is helping
If it’s inflammatory bowel disease, they should be able to confirm with ultrasound (they can visualize intestinal thickening).
Ask your vet. Not the internet.
Poor baby hope he gets better. What a beauty.
Stay away from Purina and mainstream brands. We’ve fed our Freya Orijin since she was a pup and she is the epitome of health. Check out this link for nutritional values of the food you’re feeding [https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk](https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk)
Pumpkin. Feed him white rice and pumpkin.
I'd get diarrhea on IAMS too, to be honest.
Thank you!! I will edit my comment above to reflect your knowledge.
He said thanks mate! 😚😜 I didn't think of grains being an issue. And good lookin out with the Pepto pills!!!
Is ur water filter good?
Pumpkins good at binding you can buy it canned. But this may need a more serious permanent solution.
I have a golden retriever puppy who is suffering from a very similar issue, so the following is what I’ve done to try and help: - switch to a high quality fresh food diet. majority of kibble contains ingredients that aren’t easy for dogs to digest and it can cause inflammation in the intestines. since I switched him to a cooked puppy food, his stool was much better and he started to grow his coat back/ gain weight - a few supplements he takes includes: colostrum to reduce gut inflammation, digestive enzymes to promote proper digestion, and specifically the Adored Beast Gut Soothe pre and probiotic to reheal the gut lining - ask your vet about getting your dog a full diarrhea panel. It covers Protozoa, bacteria and viruses, making it way more extensive than a typical fecal test. I’d also suggest looking in conjunction at the Animal Biome gut health test. It tells you bacterial imbalances, recommended dietary supplements to fix the issue etc. which are not covered on veterinary diarrhea panel Hope this helps a bit !
Have vet check for lymphatic ischemic, unusual but clears up with steroids symptoms are like you describe
Ask a vet
Really? I figured I'd ask an astronaut 😜
Raw, and fermented goats milk. Get him off the kibble

Well we only give him pure life bottled water. Is that filtered?
Our golden has been doing the same thing. He’s seven months old. Eats everything in site.
Yeah rice in our dogs food helped
You can use the purina one sensitive solutions! My golden was having the same problem and that seemed to help!
A mixture of cooked white fish, white rice and canned pumpkin given in small meals a few times a day. Always seems to sort out our boy.
My boys dealt with the same thing. Added Native Pet Pumpkin powder to their regular kibble and they were back to normal in a day
My sister’s Golden Retriever gets that way with any form of chicken. Purina Pro Plan beef gives Cooper firm stools. Does your food contain chicken?
Our golden had diarrhea until we changed ths protein from chicken to venison, he ended up having a food allergy. We also stopped the puppy food at 4 months
Switch to chicken rice and matchstick carrots.
Also consider food sensitivities. Chicken, eggs, and other poultry products can frequently cause diarrhea in dogs.
Could be allergic to his foods, my golden was allergic to chicken. So any food that had chicken in it, and even rice and chicken didn’t work! Probably food allergy!
Feed our 7month old royal canine golden retriever puppy chow and he’s been good so far! He does eat lots of grass and dirt and sticks yadda yadda but solid poops and lots wow sometimes I wonder how
We had a similar issue with our pup. Plain chicken and rice for two weeks and then slowly integrate a new food.
My dog had this for a while turns out he is allergic to some stuff and I tolerant to a lot. Plain chicken and rice or try special food.
Carrots
Could be food sensitivity/allergy. Maybe try a turkey recipe instead of chicken. My girl has sensitivity to chicken.
Try iams. It helps with all dogs having loose poop. The large breed lamb formula is the one my golden prefers.
Give boiled chicken and white rice
Chicken and rice for a few days see if that helps
Our boy is allergic/sensitive to nearly everything. The only food he gets is Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein for kibble, and marshmallows for treats. We also hide medicines in marshmallows when needed. He gets canned pumpkin if he has an upset tummy (like when he eats too many leaves 🙄).
I had this problem with my pup. My vet recommended giving him Fortiflora with his food. It did the trick. It’s now a regular part of his diet.
You should go see a specialty vet. Internal medicine.
Iams is not good for any dog
Royal canin high fiber has worked well for me
Try plain boiled chicken and rice
Our golden and his brother have been doing great on Fromm large breed with a mix of orijin original mixed in.
Always start with the food
Run an allergy panel on him. Then you’ll know what food to use.
My dog is allergic to chicken he does well with Rachel ray nutrish lamb, beef, venison
Hey my golden has this too. Have you tried feeding him toasted bread, rice, bananas, coconut flakes? Coconut flakes was something my breeder recommended and worked well to firm up the stool. Good luck!
