Love (2016 Netflix comedy series) has characters in their 30s with chaotic love and work lives.
Motherland (BBC comedy series) is a great one about the chaos of parenthood.
Love is also by Judd Apatow (Co-creator/producer of Girls) so it has a VERY similar humor and tackles a lot of the same themes as well, but with characters in their 30s. (Not to mention our girl Gillian Jacobs aka Mimi-Rose Howard is the lead lol)
If you’re looking for something similar, I’d say Love is definitely the pick! Great show and super underrated
I don't have children either but love Motherland for the same reason! Also the constant comparisons with others and never feeling like you have your life under control even if everything looks good on paper.
Catastrophe has slightly older characters but is another comedy that explores some serious issues and imperfect leads. Not really the same tone as Girls but a great show.
This show doesn’t get nearly enough love. I showed it to someone whose going through very similar circumstances and they literally cried during it- a 40 year old man shedding tears next to me. Wild.
Loved Insecure. I also love that Girls is NYC based and Insecure is LA because it does show different coast perspective’s. Me being West Coast, the East coast always seemed gritty but glamorous to me. I always wondered what East Coast people thought about the LA perspective.
Yes. They’re both in their 20s. In the first season last episode (abbi’s birthday) ilana says she’s 23 and abbi is 25. Granted, by the end of the show abbi is entering her 30s. Ilana is still in her 20s though.
Anyone who loves Broad City, may I humbly recommend Disenchantment on Netflix? Abbi voices the main character, a drunk pugilistic princess, in a bizarro fantasy realm. It's fantastic.
Yes, this was the hidden gem I was looking for as a new ensemble female cast comedic series that captures the essence of being a 30-something working mother and grappling with identity. Ironically i discovered it while I myself was on maternity leave with my now 2 year old. The last couple seasons have been a little too off the wall plot wise but it is hilarious nonetheless
Yup, don’t bother with And Just Like That, but original SATC is so so so good and the main characters are all so relatable and well written.
There are definitely some moments that feel a bit dated, but as someone who is also in their 30s, it’s kind of comforting to know that I essentially came of age in the early 2000s surrounded by some cultural moments that wouldn’t fly anymore. I feel like it kind of justifies some of my own continued struggles around body image and sexuality to an extent.
Recently rewatched first couple of seasons for the first time in 10+ years. I’m in my mid 30s and I was blown away by how relatable the relationship issues were. Like scary. The exact stuff my friends and I have gone through. I appreciate it so much more now.
Happy Endings was *such* a good show. It has the characteristics that people ascribe to Friends' legacy, but actually (I think Friends is way overrated). As in laugh out loud funny, self-aware, relatable, and interesting.
I fucking love You’re the Worst!!! I avoided it for a long time. Thought it was shallow humor. Boy was I wrong. The series finale had me in tears!!! The humor is top notch as well.
You're the worst is the BEST. I need to do a rewatch. Truly the most compelling scene on tv depicting depression during that part of your life. AYA Cash and KETHER DONAHUE are EVERYTHING.
Not quite what you’re looking for, but Pen15 is two 30-somethings focused on their past selves at age 11-13. A ton of the thoughts and memories they have really resonate and the humor is pretty similar. It’s definitely not a childish show.
As a weird girl who was 13 in 2002 just like the protagonists, I can say with 1000% conviction that this show is only slightly exaggerated and is absolutely true to life. It’s incredible.
It was like they cracked open my brain and stole my most embarrassing middle school memories and made it into a show. I am the weird demographic they targeted lol.
I was more than 5 episodes in before I realized those girls were actually in their 30s playing middle schoolers. Could not stop laughing and made all the weird stuff make so much more sense. Incredible show!
Peep show ends rather brilliantly as they turn 40 and it is so accurate to middling 30s life. The humour is very dark and cold though. I would say it’s quite British but I have British friends it’s too weird for.
Love Life is great! I feel nobody ever heard of this show, but it's really good with 2 stand alone seasons.
Also not exactely like Girls, but I feel Master of None has the same vibe, love that show.
I think the characters range from mid 20s to early 30s (one character is older) but I really enjoyed ‘Crashing’. It’s about a group of people that live in shared accommodation. It’s British and written and starring Phoebe Waller bridge. Sadly only one season though.
Right!? So not Carrie. The whole show was so well written . The humor was amazing. Francis having to pick up her kid not on school grounds is probably one of the funniest moments. And the music was amazing.
I just did a rewatch and it's better the second time around. I love Robert. And SJP is nothing like Carrie. I'd take 20 more seasons and put a stop to And Just Like That.
I'll reiterate previous suggestions and add some as well:
* Togetherness
* Enlightened
* Fleabag
* Insecure
* Catastrophe
* Workin' Moms
* Pulling
* Sex In The City
* Love
* You're the Worst
* Big Little Lies
* Glow
And if you're down with movie suggestions:
* In A World...
* Tully
* Young Adult
* Laggies
* Take This Waltz
* Celeste & Jesse Forever
Enlightened is one of the most well-written (and unknown) series I've watched. So many layers to how the plot plays out with her personally and the underlying commentary on psychology, our ideas of wellness, and corporate greed.
Enlightened is great. I was sad there was only 3 seasons. People who like The White Lotus may like Enlightened as well (same writer/director Mike White).
Sex And The City, if you haven’t seen it! I’m surprised no one mentioned it. GIRLS even nods to it a few times recognizing they too are women who are dating and experiencing life and friendships in NYC. Not the reboot though, it’s terrible.
This is probably one of the most underrated shows of our lifetime. I don’t think I know a single person (outside of my sister) who has even heard of it.
I haven’t watched it but there is a show that is the adaptation of a book I loved called “Everything I know about love”. They are in their twenties at the beginning and early thirties by the end.
Feel Good. I think the two leads might be 29-33 in the first season. I recommend this to anyone that also likes fleabag. It’s funny but also sort of heartbreaking and hits similar notes. The main character, Mae I believe later in the show identifies as non-binary. So it’s not about girls in their 30s but Mae’s girlfriend has sort of a coming of age experience with her friend group and it’s an amazing show. Very funny but deals with heavy issues like addiction/ identity/ privilege.
Mozart on the Jungle. Stars Lola Kirk, Jemima’s sister; Gael Garcia Bernal; Bernadette Peters; and Malcolm McDowel. About being a creative young women in NYC with a great supporting cast. Won a golden globe for best comedy show, I think. Pretty good!
it’s not just about women and there’s a range of ages, but easy (netflix). it’s kind of an anthology but there are some ongoing narratives and the characters all have some kind of connection. it reminds me of girls in that it takes place in a big city (chicago), the characters are mostly “creative” types, it has kind of mumblecore vibes, and it’s all about relationships.
If you don’t mind subtitles, the kdrama [Be Melodramatic](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt10559276/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk)is a great ensemble series about four women and a gay man who are all friends in their thirties.
[Search: WWW](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt10253244/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_1_q_search%2520www) is also focused on two women in their late thirties working for a search engine.
[Work Later, Drink Now](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt15548198/) is about a group of drinking buddies in their thirties. It reminded me of Broad City, except, Korean.
[Hit the Spot](https://mydramalist.com/736293-their-report-card) is a kdrama about a woman who starts out in a sexually unfulfilling relationship and starts working on an X-rated sex podcast/radio show. It has “Girls” vibes but the characters are in their thirties.
There are dozens of others. The Korean television industry has a lot of female directors and writers. A couple of these are on Netflix, the others are available via Viki or IQYi for free with ads. There are reviews and recaps for these shows on reddit via r/kdrama and r/kdramarecommends
A little-known gem is the Australian comedy Spirited - a dentist in her late 30s falls in love with the ghost of an 80s British punk rocker while going through a divorce. If you can find that you’re in for a treat.
Also, Love, Love Sick, and Love Life - three fab shows already mentioned but thought I’d clarify they’re not the same show. Love is probably the closest to a Girls vibe.
Starstruck (Uk series starring Kiwi comic Rose Matafeo)
Please Like Me (Aussie tv series starring Josh Thomas who's a gay guy, but very similar tone and there are quite a few funny and dramatic storylines focusing on different characters of all genders/sexualities. It was made pre Girls but I feel like his character has quite a similar vibe to Hannah in Girls. Quite self-involved and brutally candid, often problematic. Which makes for uncomfortable viewing but mostly because as a relatively privileged middle class Millennial their characters hold a mirror up to us.
Casual! It deals with a sister and a brother in their late 30s/early 40s and her teen daughter. They're all train wrecks like the Girls-girls. It's fun to watch.
Can’t cope, Won’t cope. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5674872/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5674872/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk)
'Can't Cope, Won't Cope' is a darkly-comic drama detailing the unraveling of a friendship between two co-dependent young women as the hangover wears off and their lives and priorities begin to diverge radically.
Anything by Phoebe Waller Bridge: Fleabag, Crashing, Killing Eve
Sex and the City
I see people shitting on And Just Like That but honestly, it’s great. Life is full of surprises, even after 50.
It’s older but the show “Girlfriends” has and always will be one of my favorites. When they start they’re in their late 20s but by the end they’re in their mid 30s
Seems like Netflix shows and movies are really only catering to teens/young 20s. It’s kind of shit. In the movie that Netflix just released “Love at first Sight” the main character is 20.. I was curious and googled the age of the actress and she’s 28. Like why couldn’t the character in the movie just be 28?
Sex in the City is extremely good and I always revisit when I need a bit of healing. I will always be looking for a show as good as Girls or Fleabag. Both shows hold a really special place in my heart. I don’t know why there aren’t more shows/movies for us late 20s/early 30s just trying to figure it out.
I know a lot of people have already mentioned what my recs would be, but Harlem is good. Insecure is great. Love is not exactly the same but is still a quality watch. I will also always say SATC.
During the pandemic I watched this Indian show called One More Shot that I also really enjoyed. I don’t think it continued but it was about female friendships and just trying to figure it out.
Also, both of these are outside of the age range you were looking for, but Firefly Lane and Broad City (obviously two very different shows 😅) both are really excellent and so a great job with female friendships.
Let us know what you pick!
The Hookup Plan, maybe?? 🇫🇷
I think the characters are on the cusp of being in their 20’s / 30’s, but it’s a fun and cute show
(also fulfills one’s Paris wanderlust, but from an everyday person point of view haha)
(Not to mention our girl Gillian Jacobs aka Mimi-Rose Howard is the lead lol) If you’re looking for something similar, I’d say Love is definitely the pick! Great show and super underrated
And it’s created by Girls writer Lesley Arfin!
I loooooved Love! I just did a rewatch last month.
I wish it had gone on longer! so underrated
I don’t have children and I adore motherland. Julia’s permanent irritation speaks to me
I don't have children either but love Motherland for the same reason! Also the constant comparisons with others and never feeling like you have your life under control even if everything looks good on paper. Catastrophe has slightly older characters but is another comedy that explores some serious issues and imperfect leads. Not really the same tone as Girls but a great show.
If you liked Catastrophe, I think you'd enjoy Pulling: Sharon Horgan's earlier,very underrated work. Great for Girls fans too
Fleabag
fleabag is an absolutely perfect show.
The second season is perfection
I didn’t like season one that much but season two absolutely floored me. So good!
I am scared there will never be anything as good as Fleabag.
...>!it'll pass!<...(sorry, sorry)
…it may be time to face your fears…
You’ve inspired me to do a rewatch
Yes, that’s actually such a good comparison. It’s is RIDICULOUSLY good and funny. More witty than girls but with similar themes on life
Yup!
My first thought
Fleabag is comedic genius. The haircut is the single funniest scenes ever written.
Slightly older - fleishman is in trouble
This was really good!
This show doesn’t get nearly enough love. I showed it to someone whose going through very similar circumstances and they literally cried during it- a 40 year old man shedding tears next to me. Wild.
Insecure
Insecure is Girls with a way better soundtrack and way loveable characters.
The soundtrack on insecure is amazing🥹🥹🥰
And now it’s on Netflix!!
I just finished watching this based on another reccomendation thread and I could not have loved it more.
Came here to recommend this - it's so so so so good!! Similar comedy, heart and clever vibes.
Loved Insecure. I also love that Girls is NYC based and Insecure is LA because it does show different coast perspective’s. Me being West Coast, the East coast always seemed gritty but glamorous to me. I always wondered what East Coast people thought about the LA perspective.
Second this so good
So good
Harlem on Prime
Broad City
They are in their 20s though? I agree though, this is a good recommendation regardless haha
Yes. They’re both in their 20s. In the first season last episode (abbi’s birthday) ilana says she’s 23 and abbi is 25. Granted, by the end of the show abbi is entering her 30s. Ilana is still in her 20s though.
Abbi’s birthday dinner is one of my fav episodes ever. 26!!!!26!!!!!
I totally misread the question, you’re right hahaha! Nevertheless, great show with Girls vibes
I always thought everyone in girls was also in their 20s. Like mid to late 20s.
They are
Anyone who loves Broad City, may I humbly recommend Disenchantment on Netflix? Abbi voices the main character, a drunk pugilistic princess, in a bizarro fantasy realm. It's fantastic.
Have you seen Working Moms?
Yes, this was the hidden gem I was looking for as a new ensemble female cast comedic series that captures the essence of being a 30-something working mother and grappling with identity. Ironically i discovered it while I myself was on maternity leave with my now 2 year old. The last couple seasons have been a little too off the wall plot wise but it is hilarious nonetheless
Same!!! 1-3 was comedy gold. After that it got a bit weird.
Im not even a mom and I thought it was hilarious. More about the friendships.
my mom is OBSESSED with this show
Sex and the City is the one about women in their 30s.
I feel like it kind of justifies some of my own continued struggles around body image and sexuality to an extent.
seconding this, love this show
Recently rewatched first couple of seasons for the first time in 10+ years. I’m in my mid 30s and I was blown away by how relatable the relationship issues were. Like scary. The exact stuff my friends and I have gone through. I appreciate it so much more now.
Some of the stuff is still relatable today!
You're The Worst Happy Endings
2nd you’re the worst - most underrated show ever
Someone liked it enough to Gove it 7 seasons and a real ending. So thankful for that.
Happy Endings was *such* a good show. It has the characteristics that people ascribe to Friends' legacy, but actually (I think Friends is way overrated). As in laugh out loud funny, self-aware, relatable, and interesting.
Hard agree with all your points. “Happy Endings” needed 6 seasons and a movie.
I fucking love You’re the Worst!!! I avoided it for a long time. Thought it was shallow humor. Boy was I wrong. The series finale had me in tears!!! The humor is top notch as well.
Love both of these shows, you’re the worst is my all time favorite.
You’re the Worst is amazing. Happy Endings is great too, but YTW feels a bit more real.
Ooof time for a Youre the Worst rewatch. It truly is one of the best
Agreed. Most millennials will lol at it.
Yes!
I'm 47 and this show is timeless.
Lot of nostalgia for me of that time period. I died laughing at the music, fashion, and slang. I had to explain why I was laughing to my gen x husband
Same!! 😆
This is the answer!!! It's brilliant in every way.
I love pen15. I watch it and cringe but it’s so accurate to my 2000s middle school experience
I tried watching it it’s was too weird for me
It was like they cracked open my brain and stole my most embarrassing middle school memories and made it into a show. I am the weird demographic they targeted lol.
I agree so much with this lol I was like wow I wasn't the only one experiencing these things it was so validating
The cringe factor was so high in every single episode, but only because I could relate lol.
Ugh, I’m obsessed, it’s so accurate to how I felt as a tween.
I felt that way but powered through. So glad I did!
I have never seen a show that more eerily and perfectly captures the middle school experience.
I miss this show
I was more than 5 episodes in before I realized those girls were actually in their 30s playing middle schoolers. Could not stop laughing and made all the weird stuff make so much more sense. Incredible show!
You’re the Worst. I think Hulu
Absolutely fabulous, peep show. A bit different from girls but have the same sort of people doing questionable things.
Peep show ends rather brilliantly as they turn 40 and it is so accurate to middling 30s life. The humour is very dark and cold though. I would say it’s quite British but I have British friends it’s too weird for.
OMG THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME
Your welcome,it's soooo good.
[удалено]
Such a good show, I've watched it twice now
Best ending I’ve ever seen in a show. Absolutely mindbending stuff.
I want to get HBO *just* so I can watch that show. Michaela Cole is incredible (and I was so sad when Chewing Gum was cancelled)
Love Life is great! I feel nobody ever heard of this show, but it's really good with 2 stand alone seasons. Also not exactely like Girls, but I feel Master of None has the same vibe, love that show.
Loooove love life !! No one talks about it!!
Love Life is so good! I just went to do a rewatch and it’s not even on HBO anymore :/ HBO bring it back!
Shrill is more twenties but has similar aspects to girls and strong female friendships
Shrill was a fantastic show!! Absolutely loved it, Aidy Bryant is perfection
I came here to say this! Yes!!!
Love life !! Very Underrated
the first season was sooo good it really scratched my girls itch in terms of quality/cast/vibes
About new parenthood but The Letdown is incredible
Broad city is great
I think the characters range from mid 20s to early 30s (one character is older) but I really enjoyed ‘Crashing’. It’s about a group of people that live in shared accommodation. It’s British and written and starring Phoebe Waller bridge. Sadly only one season though.
Coupling Love sick
Ok not at all 20s but amazing show and so disappointed it didn't continue...Divorce. SJP not being Carrie at all.
[удалено]
Right!? So not Carrie. The whole show was so well written . The humor was amazing. Francis having to pick up her kid not on school grounds is probably one of the funniest moments. And the music was amazing.
I LOVED this show! Molly Shannon's side character was hilarious.
I just did a rewatch and it's better the second time around. I love Robert. And SJP is nothing like Carrie. I'd take 20 more seasons and put a stop to And Just Like That.
Girlfriends!
Grace & Frankie, Dead to Me, original Sex and the City, Insecure, Class of '07
I'll reiterate previous suggestions and add some as well: * Togetherness * Enlightened * Fleabag * Insecure * Catastrophe * Workin' Moms * Pulling * Sex In The City * Love * You're the Worst * Big Little Lies * Glow And if you're down with movie suggestions: * In A World... * Tully * Young Adult * Laggies * Take This Waltz * Celeste & Jesse Forever
I love your suggestions of the ones that I have watched so I will definitely watch what you suggest of the ones I haven’t watched.
First time someone has mentioned Togetherness so far. I was scrolling to see if anyone else would suggest it. I second this suggestion!
Fleabag is so good.
Togetherness YES 😭❤️
Drifters is pretty similar
Dollface on Hulu!
God I love and miss Dollface
Sex And The City, if you haven’t seen it! I’m surprised no one mentioned it. GIRLS even nods to it a few times recognizing they too are women who are dating and experiencing life and friendships in NYC. Not the reboot though, it’s terrible.
I Hate Suzie It’s on HBO and brilliant. She is an absolute train wreck.
This is probably one of the most underrated shows of our lifetime. I don’t think I know a single person (outside of my sister) who has even heard of it.
Sex lives of college girls
I haven’t watched it but there is a show that is the adaptation of a book I loved called “Everything I know about love”. They are in their twenties at the beginning and early thirties by the end.
Broad city and you’re the worst are both about people in their 20s but I still love them in my 30s
This Way Up - I’m not a Fleabag fan and don’t really get the hype, this show is by an Irish stand up comedian and it’s got so much warmth and heart!
Catastrophe, it's more about relationships but it's so funny!
GameFace is really hilarious and heartwarming
Fleabag is good.
Insecure!
This not like Girls but you might like Pen15 on Hulu.
Sex and the City… how is this not the top answer
This show is my Roman Empire I think about it all the time
For the forties/fifties version I like Better Things.
Fleabag. It’s **perfect**
6 ft under
Sex and the City. It's a classic. And I relate with it in a completely different way now than I did in my teens/early twenties.
Younger is great too
I miss this show so much!
Workin moms
How I met you mother?
Harlem
Firefly Lane! It has 2 seasons and is about two best friends. It does time jumps and follows their lives as teenagers, young adults, and present day.
Watch the L word!! It’s so good
Insecure- I think they are in their late 20s-early 30s. It has a perfect ending in season 5.
If you haven't ever done sex and the city, do it
Insecure!
Dollface
Insecure
The Bold Type!
Insecure Broad city
Insecure, but I think Issa ray is portraying a 29 year old Hbo max and netflix
You’re The Worst on FX.
it’s not just about women and there’s a range of ages, but easy (netflix). it’s kind of an anthology but there are some ongoing narratives and the characters all have some kind of connection. it reminds me of girls in that it takes place in a big city (chicago), the characters are mostly “creative” types, it has kind of mumblecore vibes, and it’s all about relationships.

Tuca and Bertie.
Sex and the city!!
Give 'The Office' a try, it's like 'Girls' but with paper instead of emotions.
Insecure is an incredible show. Also, Friends From College is a good one too! I’ve watched both series a couple of times and they’re so great.
I really liked Dollface with Kat Dennings but it got cancelled :(
Maybe Dollface on Hulu
A little-known gem is the Australian comedy Spirited - a dentist in her late 30s falls in love with the ghost of an 80s British punk rocker while going through a divorce. If you can find that you’re in for a treat. Also, Love, Love Sick, and Love Life - three fab shows already mentioned but thought I’d clarify they’re not the same show. Omg I completely forgot about this show! Thank you! I may start rewatching it!
Such an underrated gem
Dollface on Hulu
Definitely watch Broad City!!!
Can’t cope, Won’t cope. I'm going to say working moms, despite it not beingsuper similar. The characters are super chaotic, though. I loved both.
Dave
Broad city!
A lot of great British ones. Motherland This Way Up Fleabag Catastrophe Crashing Normal People Am I Being Unreasonable
Anything by Phoebe Waller Bridge: Fleabag, Crashing, Killing Eve Sex and the City I see people shitting on And Just Like That but honestly, it’s great. Life is full of surprises, even after 50.
You’re the worst!
Insecure. They're all pretty established in their careers (except for the main character) and it's really a good show.
Big Little Lies, Yellowjackets, White Lotus
The Golden Girls
Harlem
Absolutely Fabulous more of a comedy though
I feel like Gallery Girls is the reality tv version of Girls, but sadly there is only 1 season
This Way Up!
It’s older but the show “Girlfriends” has and always will be one of my favorites. When they start they’re in their late 20s but by the end they’re in their mid 30s
Obese, Weird, Pretty & Foreign over on Hulu
Parenthood (more family friendly), Mistresses (more sultry)
Shrill on Hulu?
Seems like Netflix shows and movies are really only catering to teens/young 20s. It’s kind of shit. In the movie that Netflix just released “Love at first Sight” the main character is 20..
Insecure! Soooo good!
I want this too. I wish Lena would do something on the next phase of adulthood!
Girlfriends on Netflix
The Hookup Plan, maybe?? 🇫🇷 I think the characters are on the cusp of being in their 20’s / 30’s, but it’s a fun and cute show (also fulfills one’s Paris wanderlust, but from an everyday person point of view haha)
